12:03 AM

yeah i haven't had a drink in almost 2 years. and i plan to keep it that way, until a certain date
@amWhy this pleases me

There you go, @Integrand

wyd this fine fall evening?

@amWhy Well, we are beginning to articulate the qualities that we want such an individual to have.

@XanderHenderson That's a great start.

12:15 AM
Indeed. Hopefully, "Has a PhD" will rise to the top of the list.
@amWhy Drinking wine tonight.
But not kosher wine. Kosher wine is terrible.

@XanderHenderson Indeed! You'd make a great candidate, yourself!
@XanderHenderson I didn't even know that there was "Kosher" wine.

@amWhy Not for another 7-10 years. Gotta get that administrative experience, first.

@XanderHenderson Sure, but you'd be great after that!

My ideal candidate is a PhD in anything, 5+ years of teaching/research experience, and anther 5+ years administrative experience (either a dean or vp-style position at a four year college, or president of a CC).
@amWhy Indeed. What else is one supposed to drink on the sabbath? or at passover?
But kosher wine is generally pretty bad.

@XanderHenderson Excellent criteria.
@XanderHenderson I just googled "kosher wine" .... google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=kosher+wine+brands

12:22 AM
Also: willingness to live in the middle of BF Nowhere is a major requirement.
Heh.
Most folk just drink Manischewitz.

@XanderHenderson But, I guess, if all one knows is kosher wine, that person wouldn't know what they're missing!

There are, in all likelihood, kosher wines which are not bad. That just isn't what you'll find in most Jewish kitchens.

@XanderHenderson Hah! ;D

I mean... the nearest wedge of Parmesan cheese is 90 miles away.

@XanderHenderson Everyone needs an occasional road-trip!

12:26 AM
:)
I'm thinking of heading out the Petrified Forest again this weekend.
Go take a hike, and all that.
Hrm... this is not the Cafe. We are off-topic...
...I am going to continue here.
@amWhy

@XanderHenderson Nice! We're supposed to reach the 50's tomorrow, and early next week, the sixties!!!

18 messages moved from CURED

Ahh, you beat me to it, @XanderHenderson ;D

@amWhy I was moving as you posted. :)

@XanderHenderson Great minds think alike!

12:30 AM
So... I had TWO STUDENTS show up for office hours today.
That's infinitely more students than have shown up at any other time this semester.
Today was infinitely better than any other day thus far. :)

@XanderHenderson Yay!!

@XanderHenderson when it rains, it pours

inorite?!

@Integrand When it sprinkles, it rains, and then it pours!

well, back to the salt mines

12:46 AM
This is great: the seasonally appropriate robjohn!

1 hour later…
1:51 AM
@amWhy I hate to disagree with you, and this may be a generational thing, but "guy" it almost entirely gender neutral to most people...
I mean, I'm not going to call you "guy", because I know it annoys you, but "guy" has been gender neutral for as long as I've been aware (for reference, I'm nearly 40).

2 hours later…
3:49 AM
@amWhy I might get dizzy from that. Maybe I rather get some hot milk
so that I'll go to bed ;D

11 hours later…
3:04 PM
@XanderHenderson I didn't know they made numbers that large

3:38 PM
@Integrand They make even bigger numbers.

4:10 PM
@XanderHenderson As I posted, "guys", like "Hey you guys" is gender neutral. But not "a guy" as in "A guy walks into a bar ..." which most take to mean "a male or a man." And I'm not a dinosaur; I'm within $\pm 5$ years of you.

4:30 PM
@quid Did you assume the hot cider I was serving was alcoholic? Any way, here's your hot milk:

4:58 PM
@amWhy I'm not trying to pick a fight, but I don't think that correcting people's use of "guy" is a fight worth having.
For most people, it is gender neutral (never in my life have I understood "guy" to mean a man or male).

@XanderHenderson Thanks for your input.

1 hour later…
6:03 PM
@XanderHenderson Let's agree to disagree? Perhaps you understand guy to be gender neutral, but you have no basis to claim that your view is what "most people" understand.
What are discussion reveals is that there still exists ambiguity with respect the the gender implied by "a guy".

3 hours later…
8:50 PM
Hey, @quid, aka "quiddles" ;D.

@amWhy yes. To me cider is alcoholic. But maybe that's not universal.
Also hello!

@quid Happy Halloween! You don't have much of it left! ;D OMG, I have to remember to set my clocks back before I go to bed. Alas, we will re-enter the usual separation of seven hours!

@amWhy to you as well. It almost escaped me. It's known but not a big thing here.

Well tomorrow, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated in Mexico (not surprisingly it coincides with All Saints Day.)

@amWhy really? I think that's the second actually and coincides with "all souls' day"
But maybe there are diverging traditions

@quid Given that article, perhaps it should be called "Dos Dias de los Muertos"

@amWhy interesting

@Xander Please read: hotjar.com/blog/gender-inclusive-language-workplace. Just probably expresses my perspective better than I have. But I'm not out to convert you, although I'm thinking of creating a "guy jar"
Where users caught using the word "that guy, or some guy, or there was a guy" on this site will need to deduct 10 points from their reputation, to put in the "guy jar". Personally, my biggest issue is with the singular use of guy; less so with the plural "guys", but the blog post offers an important perspective, as well.
@quid Can I ask the developers to implement my feature request? Auto deduct, unless edited in time, of 10 rep from any user network wide, who uses "guy" in a question, answer, comment, or in chat??
Alternatively, the Smoke Detector can alert us when "guy" appears anywhere, so the occurrence can be swiftly edited (in answers or questions), or culprit comments be deleted.
@quid I.e., I'd like to see "guy" become a black listed word.

9:23 PM
@amWhy I don't especially like the word but if I said "Xander is a nice guy" is this a problem?

@quid Any chance @Catija can read the blog I linked to, and my ideas? I would like to see this happen, but I'm reasonable.

I did not yet read the blog
I would agree that "Hello guys" is not a good way to greet everyone.
My point is that to simply ban all uses of "guy" might result in false positives.

@quid No, you're right. That when one knows the gender of a user, who is male, using "guy" is perfectly appropriate. There goes my blacklist suggestion! But for ambiguous usernames and/or for women users, I'd like the CMs to elaborate a bit more in the Code of Conduct in identifying problematatic attributions of gender, and encourage gender neutral language.
One of my favorites, when speaking to more than one or two users is to greet with: "hello folks!" or "How are you all doing? (or username, username, username, ... et al.
E.g., @quid: Someone downvoted me! Some user downvoted me! Do something about the poor quality of questions from [this asker], or [This answerer] is making a habit of answering too many PSQs.... etc.
@quid, and there's always the default singular "they, or their (behavior or action...)
Anyway, @quid, I won't go on. How's your weekend going?

9:50 PM
@amWhy could be better could be worse.

@quid, @Xander, @AlexanderGruber Please note chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/56005838#56005838, and the totality of comments in succession, which is close to a diatribe, from the commenter. They seem to be rather fixated on an incident most folks would have moved on from.
@quid :P I don't think I've ever heard you say something like "it's a great day", nor something like "everything sucks". I'm kind of like that, not in a superstitious way, but always aware things good be better, and they could be worse.

@amWhy I think it is best ignored. If it continues we'll stop it by force.

@quid Sounds about right!

@amWhy not true!
Recently I said "I am over the moon"

@quid That's right! I stand corrected! Well I'll join you: I'm in a better place than I've been in for more than a year!

9:55 PM
@amWhy that's good

@quid If you think it best to delete my comment with the link to the mods' office chat, feel free to do so.

It's alright

10:14 PM
Halloween treats for all ^^^ @quid, @Xander, @AlexanderGruber, @JyrkiLahtonen, @an4s, and anyone else with a sweet tooth, take what you'd like; I have another basket a'waiting! $\Large\color{orange}{\text{ Happy Halloween }}$

@amWhy thanks

10:30 PM
@Integrand Some some candy!
