5:43 PM
Welcome! In this room, the cafe is open 24-7, and the tavern, for whoever, whenever. I hope to plan events where anyone can interact in real time.
Right now, we're open for service! Help wanted: Baristas and Bartenders!! ;D

Oh hi!
Am I the first customer? =)

@user21820 Indeed!! What can I serve you? ;D

I just need plain water, since I don't drink.
=D
If water is not good for the internet, then maybe just a shot of fun.

@user21820 Would you like that water heated, room temperature, or on ice! (With a shot of fun!)

Room temperature and pressure!

5:49 PM
@user21820 All time Customer number 1: @user21820!!

Haha..

@user21820 Given you're the first customer ever, you get free drinks, forever, any beverage of your choice. (But for rare requests, like "mango juice", or "cactus juice", please notify the CTM 24 hours in advance!) ;D

Who else is coming?

(Disclaimer: water from Niagara Falls, or genuine Japanese Saki, require 72 hours notice!)
@user21820 I'll send out more invites. Feel free to invite anyone you'd like. (Any friend of yours, is a friend of mine ;D)

6:00 PM
Hello @Safdar! Welcome!

lol I just noticed your mask

@SimplyBeautifulArt o/ ;D.

@SimplyBeautifulArt I know, it's teeny, but compliments of @AlexanderGruber!!

I've recently been researching bracketing methods which I talked with @user21820 a bit about yesterday
D: also this sound is nostalgically annoying as always

6:02 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt Which sound?

@amWhy こんにちは (hello)

@SimplyBeautifulArt Is it the ping ping sound?

>:[

6:03 PM
As usual, I have my computer on mute, so I don't here anything. =P

idk why but the face looks silly to me lol

@SimplyBeautifulArt (Ô-Ô)/

Ping!

d:

@SimplyBeautifulArt: Have you ever considered using something to change or disable the chat sounds?

6:06 PM
@user21820 PING!!

>:O
shhh that sounds like a reasonable idea

Curious: Does each site have it's own "ping" sound? I know that meta.se has a very different ping sound. That's why I'm wondering?

@amWhy Oh it does?! What have I been missing out in Silent SE?

@user21820 An entire world of sound, awaits you!! =P

6:09 PM
$$\left(\underset{\smile}{\overset{\large{\overset{\frown}\cdot \,\overset{\frown}\cdot}}{}}\right)$$

Hmm then maybe I should petition for a change of chat sound

@amWhy Sounds... scary...

Oof I've changed some things since the last time lol
now mathjax doesn't automatically render

@SimplyBeautifulArt damn.. :D

@SimplyBeautifulArt Mine never auto-rendered. I have to refresh it usually ever day.

re-ping!

@Safdar Nice!! But it looks too much like a guy. Can you construct a gal?

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/se-chat-mathjax/jkohnpfocfllikbgkfdcghgjgejcfhjb

Have any of you tried this?

@Safdar Not yet!

@amWhy eyelashes and hair are still under development.. I'll come up with one oneday..

@SimplyBeautifulArt You want me to re-ping?

6:14 PM
>:(
@Safdar not I
@Safdar lol
Think I also managed to find something fairly interesting yesterday for fixed-point iteration (most recent question)
After playing around with it a bunch, it seems to be significantly faster when fixed-point iteration is diverging

6:33 PM
Welcome, @Xander! What can I serve you?? ;D

Something with a lot of alcohol?

D:< wait I never got anything

@XanderHenderson How about straight whiskey?
@SimplyBeautifulArt What can I serve you??

D:<
I want hot chocolate
with marshmallows

@amWhy American, Canadian, Scotch, Irish, or Japanese?

6:35 PM
@amWhy Is it just drinks?

I've got the milk heating, and little itty bitty marshmellows...

I think I am going to go make more coffee...

@Safdar Well, I'll need to recruit baristas and bartenders, (else this cafe and tavern will become a BYOB!!) and if you want food, I'll recruit you as the chef!!

@amWhy Store bought noodles for a steal of 2*store price.. :D

@XanderHenderson Kahlua might be nice in that!

6:37 PM
@amWhy It turns out that steaming the milk is almost the hardest part of making a latte or cappuccino. But I'm getting better at it!
@amWhy My mother stole all the Kahlua :\

@XanderHenderson Try a shot of of Kahlua in that, as well!!
@XanderHenderson Oh, no!! How could she!!??

I did make my own coffee liqueur once, though. It was good.
@amWhy She likes it on ice cream.

@XanderHenderson huh interesting, I've never tried myself tbh

@SimplyBeautifulArt It's pretty simple. Steep coffee grounds in vodka (or similar relatively neutral liquor) for a couple of days, then strain out the grounds and add simple syrup at a 1:1 ratio (where the simple syrup itself is a 1:1 mix of sugar and water, which you heat to dissolve).

@XanderHenderson Wow! That's one I haven't heard ;D. My sister, before she died far too young last year, created it. I'll have to cojole my neices' memories (both at age 25 mind you), because they would have Kahlua making get togethers!

6:40 PM
>.>
Hm speaking of which we need more ice cream here
ate it all last night I think

@XanderHenderson Thou Shalt Not Ping @SimplyBeautifulArt !

Oops!!! :(

@amWhy Oh, really?
What about superping?
@SimplyBeautifulArt SUPERPING!

6:43 PM
How shall we contact you when you are not present? Would you like half a dozen jello shots so you not longer care about whether or not you're pinged, SBA?? ;D

>.> jello is good too
fridged jello, milk, and chopped fruits is a pretty good mix

Have you ever tried a jello shot? SBA
@SimplyBeautifulArt I never tried milk. Hmmm. Never occurred to me to do so.

nah I don't do alcohol :-/
At least that's what I'm assuming you mean by jello shot

@SimplyBeautifulArt That's great! I think sometimes young folks do everything they can to disguise the taste of alcohol (punches, jello shots, etc.) (Just for the high). The placebo effect of serving "spiked" punch, made strictly of fruit juice makes them just as "high" as a punch that's literally spiked.!!

lmao
reminds me of a college anime where everyone said to always carry a lighter to check if your water was flammable lol

6:52 PM
@amWhy Well the placebo effect is pretty well studied.. Isn't it a "real" thing?

@Safdar Indeed it is a real phenomenon. Hence most studies on any treatment require a double blind studies, using at a minimum, have test subjects given treatment, half given placebo (with no subject knowing whether they were given the treatment or a placebo treatment) and examiners unaware of who is who among the test subjects, to be valid.

Oh hello
When was this a thing :P

@TheSimpliFire o/ @TheSimpliFire !

I see, I didn't recall seeing that chatroom title before here

7:07 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt Indeed, today. I'm hoping to have a weekly event, or two (due to different timezones) for Happy hour events. I'll probably pose puzzles and word games, apart from that. It serves coffee, soft beverages, and for those of legal age, (?), you can BYOB!. @Safdar is trying to talk me into offering edibles as well ;D. Primarily a site for unwinding, mingling, having fun, and such!

:O
puzzles sounds interesting

@SimplyBeautifulArt You're welcome to introduce some!!

I made blueberry muffins.
And then I ate them.

Sorry, I'm relearning, SBA.

7:09 PM
All of them. :\
I probably shouldn't have done that.
I think I am going to go for a walk.

Restart the previous area 51 proposal for math challenges? (Atleast just as an event)

@Safdar Yeeehaaa
That's something I won't forget :P
@XanderHenderson No, though I would have done the same

@XanderHenderson Oops. How many did you make?? And then eat??
@TheSimpliFire That was, indeed, handled poorly by SE.

@amWhy At one point I did have an evil thought of reproposing after Area 51 went a bit undermoderated (and still is)

I love baking cookies, but I've learned how to mix batter, freeze it in "meatball scoops", and pull only three frozen "balls" of dough at a time, to thaw, and bake on demand, for that very same reason, @XanderHenderson @

7:13 PM
@amWhy 1 cup flour, 1/3 cup sugar, 1/2 cup buckwheat flour, a bit of salt and backing powder, stick o' butter, 1 cup of milk, and two eggs.
Plus blueberries.
It made 8 muffins.

@XanderHenderson Well, nothing that a few days of dedicated walking can't undo!

Indeed.
Maybe I'll head out to the painted desert tomorrow. The weather has been quite nice.

@XanderHenderson :P We've had cool temps and rain, and grey skies for six days straight!!

@amWhy Sounds wonderful!
I like that kind of weather.

@XanderHenderson I was feeling ill a few days ago, which was perfect timing, because it was easy to nap as needed, and lay low. But I'm getting cabin fever by now!!!!!

7:17 PM
oof
my parents are definitely feeling the annoyances of coronavirus going crazy recently
:-/

Are math questions allowed here?

@Safdar Of course not. Only chemistry questions.

@SimplyBeautifulArt Indeed! You weren't on in the chat where I mentioned to others that my brother, his girlfriend, his daughter, and her boyfriend all tested positive for Covid over the course of four days. I'm wondering, given all the reports from my bro (who is 250 miles away, and I haven't visited since Christmas, nor he visiting me, if I suffered a "placebo effect" of sorts, paying extra attention to everything that felt "off". Fortunately, none of them felt anything more severe than a cold. I

D:<
oof that's a RIP
good to hear nothing serious though

Sorry, SBA... Yeah, they're all post STRICT quarantine.
@Safdar "A place to socialize, have fun, share humor and war stories, ... drink coffee or whatever..., share puzzles, word games, RELAX... There are many many chats on math.se that deal strictly with math, or specific topics in math.

7:26 PM
@amWhy :(. Move to trash if you will.. I am fine though :D

By "chemistry questions" I specifically mean questions about how to mix various adult beverages. That's chemistry, right?

@Safdar Don't worry! This chat was born today... we're all in a learning curve :D!

@Safdar My room is like 95% maths so I guess you can post there. Or there's the main Mathematics chatroom

@XanderHenderson you might not wanna ask that on the main site.. but I guess so..
@TheSimpliFire which one?

7:28 PM
can anyone help me in here? math.stackexchange.com/questions/3823701/… I'm kinda stuck

@amWhy could you move it there?

@XanderHenderson Flashback to a great novel: google.com/…
@Safdar Done!

@amWhy Thanks..
I'll have some tea with honey.. If beverages are still allowed :D

If anyone here, or soon to come, in the near future, appears to be around a lot, I'd like to recruit other room owners, (barista or bartending or good social skills, OR a great sense of humor, or incredibly inspiring, or dedicated, is a must ;D). Note that the list of requirements is a
@Safdar Absolutely!

@Safdar Incidentally I had that this afternoon. It was great

7:35 PM
.... disjunction, meaning that any of those qualities, even if only one, qualifies potential support here!!

8:11 PM
hello @amWhy

@quid Hello. Are you thirsty?

@amWhy yes

Let's toast, @quid! But if I guessed your beverage of preference wrongly, just say the word!
I found a word, not too intractable, but still, with a surprising number of words one can create from the letters in it. So I am going to forbid any/all words of length less than or equal to three letters: PRIMATE (Obviously, e.g., PRIME)

8:32 PM
@amWhy cheers

@quid Cheers!

@amWhy MATE, TEAM, TAME, MEAT,

MARE TEAR TEAM RATE
I never get IRATE, now do I, @quid ;D
^^Theme song for this chatroom!!
Thanks for stopping in, @quid ;D !

@amWhy maybe you never get irate, because you always are? ;D

@quid :P ;D
META (sounds so familiar???). PRIM TRIM TIER TIRE RITE

8:50 PM
mart?

SBA: yes, indeed! But the rules of the game is you must capitalize all letters, in boldface. (Did I sound stern enough?) ;D
PART
TARP
PEAR PAIR REAP PARE, and a word that reverses P and R in the last word, which I'm not in the mood to write.

@amWhy One of the best television themes of all time.

@XanderHenderson It was indeed. And it had a pretty successful off-spin, in Frasier! (in terms of tv shows, but I never cared much for the theme song to Frasier!)

@amWhy Yeah, I don't care about tossed salads and scrambled eggs.

@XanderHenderson Indeed!!
Welcome, @KReiser!!

9:05 PM
I read this as "Cavern and Tafe" the first time I saw it in the chat menu and was very confused.

Cavern and Taffy?

@KReiser Have you had a few? ;D (Just kidding!)

Not yet, at least. Spoonerisms can be fun, though!

@XanderHenderson Some of the best Taffy in the world is manufactured in caverns. Didn't you know that???!!! ;D

@amWhy I knew that the best cheeses came from caverns, but did not know anything about taffy.

9:22 PM
@XanderHenderson Re: cheese: Only if those caverns are located in Wisconsin!! :P Taffy can be high quality if cultivate in any cavern, even those cavers that might exist in Arizona!

@amWhy Psh. California cheese comes from happy cows. I don't know where Wisconsin cheese comes from.

@XanderHenderson Nostalgic are we, for CA??

@amWhy No, not really. California cheese sucks as much as Wisconsin cheese. The best cheeses come from France.
And, to a lesser extent, Italy.

@XanderHenderson Indeed! Though it varies, as to which is best, according to location. But I completely agree. We were just having some geographic bantering among those uncouth Americans! ;D By the way, cheeseheads unite the packers are playing their first game (without fans) in minnesota, against the Vikings, tomorrow. I'm really not entirely sure why the NFL disn't just nix the season. :(
I've already heard folks predicting the historical references to 2010: The Lost Year. I hope that applies also to one DT!!

9:38 PM
@amWhy Ugh... concussion ball.

@XanderHenderson Indeed!
@XanderHenderson Am I remembering correctly, @XanderHenderson, that you fenced in your earlier years?
I am going to force myself to reserve downvotes and close votes for the last couple hours of the MSE day, which seems to chronically be deluged with very low quality questions and a good share of PSQ's!

@amWhy I did.
I fenced as a mid-level competitive foilist in my 20s.
And totally wrecked my knees. :\

@XanderHenderson Awesome. I did track and field, and was a pentathelete/hepthathelete. Completed until 22.

@amWhy Nice!

@XanderHenderson Sort of the same outcome for me. Knees and my right elbow and shoulder, from repeatedly throwing the discuss.

9:50 PM
I trained some pentathlon competitors back in the day.

@XanderHenderson Wow! I started in highschool, where the highschool athltetic association in wisconsin didn't sponsor a pentathelon, (or decathalon) for girls or guys, but I trained and performed in all the events. In summers, due to my awesome highschool coach, willing to traverse the US to enable two of us to compete in the Junior Olympics, that was my start.
I was never a "natural" athlete. I was very successful in my youth, but primarily out of sheer determination. My biggest asset was my strength. I still, after decades, hold the female record in the bench press, ever achieved at my highschool.
@XanderHenderson thanks for the fifth close vote in CURED, on my request!!

@amWhy Nice.
I, too, am not a natural athlete. I trained hard (at my peak, I was at the fencing academy for five or six hours almost every day after classes).

@XanderHenderson Nice... sounds a lot like me. For a couple years, I invested more in other endeavors than I did in pursuing math... I did quite well in school, but I very much wanted to not just be "the smart frosh/soph" or the "whiz girl"... I didn't mind that, and was proud of academic accomplishments, but I didn't want to be known as only that.

10:37 PM
sorry, @XanderHenderson, I can't handle the inequity in which overwhelmingly helpful users are treated, compared to the kid gloves applied to the overwhelmingly destructive users. Day after day, posts like Tim's on meta are a slap in the face to those who invest more time and energy into this site than to self-serving users with a chip on their shoulders.

@amWhy I understand your frustration with a certain user on meta. I, too, am very frustrated with that user.
However, I do not think that being confrontational is helping. I am not deleting your comments because I think that you are saying anything which is incorrect. However, I do not think that the back-and-forth is serving a productive purpose.
It is not personal---mostly, I just don't want that other user to have an excuse to keep responding with escalating comments.

@XanderHenderson Why aren't mods deleting this meta user's confrontational post and comments, then?? If something is confrontational, I'm fine with you all deleting it. BUT PLEASE BE CONSISTENT across the board. I do get your point, but every comment deleted by any/all challengers also serves to bolster on unbalanced and agitated user's delusion that they must be right. I don't get how in some cases, peer pressure is seen as a good thing, and in other cases, we're all supposed to pretend ...

10:52 PM
@amWhy I have deleted a number of their comments. I have left the ones which attack me, personally, as I don't want to be accused of censoring a user to preserve my own status. I have asked other moderators to have a look.

... a destructive user didn't say anything, just ignore it, yet it lives on, and it keeps their deulusions alive. As I said I DO NOT LIKE INCONSISTENCY in how users are treated. If you fear that such users (the delusionary, destructive ones) are seen as unstable, and need to be protected from themselves and what other users might trigger, due to their instability, then they should have their accounts suspended until they indicate/document they've received help.
@XanderHenderson I understand that, but mods seem to have no problem censoring not irate, dilusional, unbalance users. And there are plenty of other unstable users that take cues from what remains is such posts, and even support them.

@amWhy Indeed, the +1/-2 vote total on my answer seems to indicate that.

But I do appreciate your comments, @Xander. I just think that there is a need to work on a "How to ask a good question on meta.math.se" meta question. I think doing so would help rein in provoacative/agitated posts. I know you all do the best you can at any given time. I'm just observing from a stance where I've seen this time and again from a dozen users... over time.

@amWhy I really like the idea of a "How to ask a good meta question" question. If I get some time, I might devote some attention to that.

@XanderHenderson If you ever want to run a draft by me, I'll be all "ears" (or, rather, all "eyes")!

11:06 PM
@amWhy Indeed; thank you.

11:24 PM
One thing that bother's me, though, @Xander, is that mods seem to be more concerned, sometimes, about not wanting to appear "censoring" when there is deviant support for destructive user, but are very willing to "censor" anything flagged by a destructive user, or their deviant supporters. I'm not too fond of actions taken (or more relevant, not taken), when mods fear pushback from vocal deviant/destructive users). This is not me blaming mods, because the phenomenon happens amidst police ....
...forces in communities where, when trying to intervene, dozens of cell-phones start recording, and statistically, this has proven intimidating to police foreces acting above board in ways they were trained to. I would simply ask the mods to consider if their fear of escalating volatile users, and shutting down valid feedback from other users, particularly on meta, doesn't in fact enable them to continue their delusions, and believes they are being persecuted???
I can't know the answer to that, But longstanding practices in handling (or not) problematic meta users really haven't worked. So I though it is worth asking.
