@Shalvenay Haven't seen it done in a gravatar before, but have seen it in usernames previously. The conclusion there was that usernames and user profiles are fine for self promotion as long as the answers focus on answering the question and not promoting anything. A quick glance at the profile looks like they are following the policy.
