Got my caliper, and its disappointing
the jaws are not parallel so it has a close point but that's at the tip. Can close it 0.2mm more than that with some pressure.
I might write up a question on rescuing calipers.
If I'd bought that mill, I might have been able to skim the jaws flat :-\
