@Aaron They did a bang-up job on the pole's shadow when they photoshopped it in (the pole, not the shadow)!

1:34 AM
@NiallC. The shadow of the pole will be much thinner than that of a tree. Here's the story: news.nationalpost.com/2012/11/19/…

1:49 AM
@BMitch It shouldn't be thinner than the pole itself, though.

@NiallC. The road may be slopping down from the camera. I'm not going to say it isn't a photoshop, but it's not immediately obvious to me and there appears to be an entire news article around it.

I'm finding that pole-in-the-road seems to be a Quebeçois meme

2:09 AM
I'm going to place my bet on legit. There's a second pole in the background with similar markings, and the tire paths on the right lane show an unusual veering away from the inside of the turn. Typically, you'd see the wear marks going right up to the double yellow line on that turn.

2:30 AM
That's a good point; I guess it could be a dip in the road

@Tester101 I had to go to Montreal for a few days. I've been looking in but not posting

Did bookcases not exist before power tools?

Q: What should I consider when designing a simple bookcase that will be built without power tools?

pufferfishI'd like to build a bookcase using pine (or meranti) planks of dimension 22mm/220mm/3m that my local hardware store stocks. They offer the service of cutting to length, but I have no power tools (well, maybe a drill and countersink bit), so will have to have it all cut beforehand. What should I ...

maybe hes trying to do it medieval style

A perfect situation to ask "What would Jesus do?".

an aspiration of mine is to build my own custom kitchen cabinets out of solid wood
i'm short a good table saw and a planner - have everything else.

@lsiunsuex You'll need quite a bit of cash. solid wood is expensive.

i know

12:14 PM
Even Jesus would use manufactured wood nowadays.

we have manufactured wood right now - we got the unfinished ones at lowes and stained them ourselves - not the same. we're always paranoid about water when we put away dishes ruining the interior surfaces
the faces are real solid wood, but the insides - the actual cabinet - is mdf

12:28 PM
Peel and stick tiles, or some type of laminate applied to the tops of the shelves will help protect them.

12:40 PM
so i sanded and primed last night
first time i use behr primer - garbage - to thin - splattered to easily... kilz 2 is better
gallon and 1/4 - ceiling needed 2 coats - walls i put it on heavy cause it was getting late for a 12x11 room

Q: How do I fix a refridgerator that stopped working after being unplugged?

MalfistI unplugged my refrigerator to clean it (new house), and it was working at the time of cleaning. We left it with it's doors open and unplugged for two days, after that it will not cool and stays room temperature inside the fridge and freezer sections. How can I restore my fridge to normal operat...

You could start by plugging it back in.

2:54 PM
Thank you, @BMitch. For getting me to learn more than I've ever wanted to know about pipe thread.
@ChrisCudmore Good call.

@Tester101 Oh good, now at least one of us knows something about it. :)

mcdonalds scrambled eggs are disgusting. fyi.

@lsiunsuex I thought that was common knowledge?

usually have burger king for breakfast (if i have breakfast) - i didn't know :(

Go for the McMuffin. Even McDonalds can't screw up a fried egg sammich.

3:06 PM
Hmm. A 3-way switch controlling an exhaust fan light combo... "Yes, I'd like either the fan to be on or the light."

It's the only McDonalds I'll eat, and only on Road trips.

because i know my boss gets easily frustrated - this is what you do. when he says hes going to buy food, who wants in - you simply tell him what you want, give him a $20 - when he gets there, he gets frustrated (easily) placing multiple orders and says f' it, puts it all on his card and gives you the $20 back

@ChrisCudmore That sounds like a bad idea. I wouldn't want to be too far from a bathroom after eating McDonald's.
You might start regretting that MCmuffin, when you see "Next Rest Area 50 Miles".

I was thinking of an app to make all this easier. "CoffeeRun" - Collect the orders on a phone, wave the bar code at the cash, and the order is entered into the cash register. Needs some work, particularly on the cash handling side. You could probably get a buy-in from a few big chains.

3:12 PM
was working on an app like that with my brother for coffee
another project came up and i never finished it - been meaning to
someone presents a "million dollar app idea" to me almost every month - amazing how little insight into app development / running an entire f'ing server of that magnitude people have

@ChrisCudmore Browse popular restaurant menus, select items, send order to nearby restaurant, go pick up/pay for order.

I'd also like to have it track internal accounts. So when you give me $2 for a $1.65 order, the app will track that I owe you 35 cents. But that money just goes in as a credit to you and a debit to me, and we settle on payday.

I think you're on to something.

It's only good for fast food. I can easily download a tim hortons or McDonalds menu.

the problem with those ideas is the technologies that make them easy to develop - are hit and miss with people that use them - for that app - you could use paypal pay a friend - gather everyones money and pay out of the pool - BUT - how many people use paypal on their phone

3:16 PM
@lsiunsuex I think it's a million dollar Idea. That is, it would take about a million dollars to get it to market.

so to not use paypal and do it on your own would require some serious buildout
@ChrisCudmore you would be surprised how much you can do with little resources and shit tons of motivation when you need to - exotic solutions always present themselves

Microtransactions are really the biggest problem facing technology today. We've figured out how to by a car over the internet, but I still can't buy a coffee.

Start simple, test market, add features.

^ - this
to many people think they can corner a market first time around. it takes lots of time (if thats the goal)

Three major components - Order Taking, Order->Restaurant, Cash handling/accounting.
It would have to be a free app, so you'd need the restaurants to pay you for it.

3:19 PM
your biggest problem is #2

Yeah, which means partnering with the chain.

@ChrisCudmore Start out locally, simply organizing orders and handling cash.

Although, starbucks has some way of scanning a phone for payment now.
It's either QR or Bar Code. I haven't looked at it.

"Rick wants x and gave $2.00, Wendy wants y and gave $150". You manually place the order, and enter the cost of each order, then the app calculates change due to each order.

order -> restaurant == having something in place at the restaurant that can receive the order - you need a: internet access, b: premise equipment c: training d: DR plan (what happens when it goes down) e: support for the premise equipment (what happens when the host spills coffee on it)

3:22 PM
You can add features later, if you actually find yourself using the app.

@lsiunsuex order -> restaurant can be done two ways. 1) Cloud storage of order, and a PK via QR. This could also facilitate an online prepayment option.
2) Bluetooth Transfer of entire order. But pairing would then be an issue.

god cloud is such a shitty buzz word

What is a "god cloud"?

2 - bluetooth transfer of entire order or the cloud storage - you still need a means of the restaurant to get the order

3:26 PM
you can't rely on employees to use their iphone to receive an order - they can quit at a moments notice or steel from you or sabotage

Yeah. From a user perspective, "The Cloud" means nothing. It's all on the internet.

the owner of the restaurant cant be guaranteed to be there all the time and use his iphone / ipad

Nah, it would have to be a BT device hooked up to the cash.

WiFi direct to transfer the order. No pairing required.

Or SMS?

3:26 PM
right, but a BT device to transfer the order to what?
they need premise equipment then

To the cash.

cash register? you'd be surprised how many small restaurants DONT use Micros systems or the equivalent of a smart terminal

Most cash registers are basically computers now anyway. All you'd need is a dongle, and some software.

There's no way of getting my order to the cash without some sort of device.

@ChrisCudmore thats what i'm trying to say - putting a device at the restaurant requires more work than actually developing the system and getting someone to buy it

3:28 PM
The restaurant can't start prepping an order until I'm physically there.

You'd need some type of protection from "order and dash", if you're taking orders remotely.

@Tester101 you'd have to accept the CC on the phone at the time of the order

@Tester101 YEah. That's why I've got to be in the restaurant.

use a gateway - paypal / stripe - hold the money for the restaurant and batch process end of night / week
most restaurants batch process CC's anyways - more efficient

Too complex. I'm probably still paying with cash.

3:30 PM
people that carry cash are dwindling

I could go without the electronic transfer to start. Just use it as a stand alone order/cash tracking tool. I can still hand my phone to the clerk while they punch it in.

@ChrisCudmore Places like starbucks and similar (or anywhere "techie" people spend time) would be interested.

dont get me wrong - the idea is solid - its a version 2 feature i have on the map for my restaurant startup - but its a very complex process to do it right

Cash is still the fastest way to process small transactions.
@lsiunsuex Absolutely. It's still just a concept. There needs to be some extensive requirements gathering and prioritizing.

cash requires making change - with the proper gateway - CC transactions under $20 don't require a receipt - CC's are faster - go order a coffee from SB - give her your card - 2 seconds later she gives it back

3:33 PM
We're all Chip cards here.

Imagine sitting in starbucks, reading the paper, and you notice your coffee is almost gone. Like most people, you're too lazy to get and wait in line for more. So you pull out your smartphone, and place the order. 2 minutes later the clerk calls out that your order is ready.

Gotta punch in a number.
And they still haven't integrated cash and credit card readers adequately.
In reality, I don't understand why I have to type in Cash/Credit/ Lowe's card/ gift card etc at Lowes.

@Tester101 already doing it to an extent - news.starbucks.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=490

I should be able to stick something in the machine, and let it figure it out.

thats because theres letters aren't allowed in account numbers and the first digit over laps across multiple vendors
when there weren't store cards - it was visa starts with 4, MC starts with 5 and AMEX was 6 i think
(or whatever that order is now)
now with so many store cards - its almost impossible to know what kind of card it is by looking at the number - we've tried
we even bought a database that associated the first 4 digits with their banks - and its wrong sometimes
i've done a lot of research in this type of stuff

3:38 PM
Here's a good question: Why is my telephone account a 20 digit number that includes my 10 digit phone? Isn't the phone number enough to identify me?

the account # probably contains other information - at my office, the account # contains the year the account was opened
because phone #'s can change hands, the rest of the acct number is probably a mix of date opened / maybe some personal information to verify validity
think of a VIN # - the vin # says the year / month the car was built, color, class, etc...

@lsiunsuex That's because that needs to be interpreted by cops in the field. Nothing gets done on my phone acct. without there being a computer terminal involved.

right, but if you train a human to look at an account number and say the first 10 are the phone #, the next 4 are month and year, the next 5 ... it can make things easier
we know our acct numbers start with the year - so do our customers, we tell them right on the website

@lsiunsuex Bull. every time I call, they ask for a whole bunch of personal info. They're working off the computer, not the account number.

knowing the year tells us a lot about the acct

3:45 PM
What kind of service are you providing? In most cases, it's irrelevant.

we work with CCs
(without saying to much)
remember a few weeks ago i asked how to move away from MD5 to SHA1 encryption for passwords (or whatever)

and i think @TheEvilGreebo or @BMitch suggested making the first few characters of the password parsable so i could tell which one it was
same shit - some developer decided that acct # needed more info in it so they could parse whatever

Right.
BACK to WORK!
Later.

ITS FRIDAY! NO WORK TODAY!

3:49 PM
It's get sh|t done that I haven't done all week day.

did that yesterday :)
smoke time anyways

coffee run, and then three hours of uninterupted code.

@lsiunsuex You don't want to smoke.

i was doing good, then i went to dinner with some dental students, had some wine and fell off the wagon :(
try again tomorrow after i paint tonight

4:15 PM
@lsiunsuex Do. Or do not. There is no try.

that was the best photo they had of ballmer ? begging to be made an internet meme

A: Has India invaded any country in the last 10,000 years?

RedGrittyBrick1971 I have the Impression India did a little bit of invading in 1971 From Wikipedia After building tensions during the Bangladesh Liberation war, Pakistan launched a pre-emptive attack against India, which responded with air-strikes. This marked the official start of the Indo-Pakistani...
