Q: What is the scope of the Charlatan background?

TreeSpawnedI am currently in talks with a player, who wants his character to have the Charlatan Background, while I as the DM am not sure that's, what the character actually is. The player describes his character as someone who is not a noble, but works for nobles, doing their "dirty work" and is being expl...

How are people here? I’ve been sporadically online for a week cause vacation, and my drivers license is no longer provisional as of today/tomorrow (also oh yeah, birthday, finally not child, all that stuff too but MORE IMPORTANTLY I can drive friends now and I’m camping and happy)

Q: Can the Echo of the Echo Knight fighter be used to teleport across planes?

AzaleaHow would we do this if we're to believe this is possible anyways? The relevant rules say Manifest Echo you can use a bonus action to magically manifest an echo of yourself in an unoccupied space you can see within 15 feet of you So if planes of existence are separated physically by an infinite...

I still have no drivers' license as I'm rather afraid to be the cause of an accident, so congrats!

I would like some general brainstorming for a "D&D" session of unusual design, & am unsure what's a good venue for such discussion. Shall we talk about it here? Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Some friends have expressed interest in a "level zero" session I've been pondering, wherein they'd play as "NPC types" who wake up with a headache in an Owlbear cave, after a party of adventurers swept through Thi Town.

Together, they encounter a wilderness teeming with creatures (_most_ of which they wouldn't necessarily fight), & discover they are bound together by powerful magics which compel them to (among other things) undo the ill-wrought works of those reckless adventurers who left the NPCs of Thi Town in an untenable predicament.
...
Essentially, these (N)PCs should be almost enslaved to deities they once worshipped, & used as pawns or Proxies by these deities (\dragons), to foil a twisted plot hatched by nefarious 'adventurers' & ideally, these "level zero" characters should gain items & boons which become "key" to defeating the adventurers (& choosing whether to release the echo of a long forgotten Great Wyrm from its torment).
...
Main questions:
1) What spells\items\effects can I use to maximize the strength of the magical bond between a party which may include a construct, a plant, an undead, a monster which can occupy or mimic humanoids, & a Valenar Steed that wasn't successfully transformed?
2) What effect+effect or creature+creature or effect+creature combos, can I use to challenge a "level zero" party, without boring grinds or constant TPK?
3) If one PC fully dies, the whole party should die & return to the starting cave, with their items dropped along the way. Some consequence besides "permadeath" should p
...
Bonus question: What plane should the primary portion of this session take place in?
(A Domain of Dread a'la Ravenloft? A cavern system in the Outlands? A "god-isle" in the Astral?)

^
Note that aside from some Backgrounds (or possible Boons or Dark Gifts) which grant a Lvl 1 spell use, the player characters will *not* have class features including spell slots or a Fighting Style, & won't have proficiencies except those listed in their Background. Their "former selves" (pre-ModifyMemory) will have required a Spell Scroll or other item, to cast Contingency as commanded.

So, giving them ways to cleverly defeat/avoid threats which may greatly exceed their "level zero" Challenge Rating, will probably be crucial?!?

7:08 AM
just to make sure, but this is based on 5E, correct?
Just asking to make sure the basis for the spells and other things like that is the same, since those can vary quite a lot between editions while carrying the same name.
For the idea itself, sounds like a really interesting concept, but wheeeew is it going to be a pain to balance everything. At this point you're basically making a whole system from scratch, using bits and pieces from D&D.
At this point I'd rather make my own system and simply use D&D as a source of inspiration, without binding myself with its rules. Trying to work around those rules to make what is basically a whole new game sounds like more trouble than it's worth, and might make it more confusing in the end.

7:37 AM
@Matthieu Yes, 5e!

8:10 AM
Indeed! Creating challenges that don't just kill them outright, is proving really tough to do, within the bounds of what a vanilla <1 CR NPC is capable of!

I have determined that some types of non-human "Commoner", & some humanoid constructs, are marginally more useful than unflavored human commoners. So, putting a character with weaker Background choice in this superior "body" goes some way toward balancing the team. Likewise, some Backgrounds effectively raise the CR at such a low level.

Even so, I'm thinking at least one decently strong Boon & one Dark Gift & one cursed Magic Tattoo, m

@BardicWizard congrats!
@bobble I can understand, any decent buses around?

9:52 AM
So, TLDR: I want to use 5e rules, to showcase all the details it has BESIDES class progression.

There's just tons of possibility. Very true that it's HARD to balance, though that goes for any encounter I come up with. ;D

(Incidentally, what *is* the effective CR of a fully refreshed Edwin Odesseiron clone with a Mirror of Life Trapping, accompanied by a Simulacrum of Edwin Odesseiron with a Tinderstrike dagger, & 2 castings of Mirror Image already in effect upon each creature, if one of your party is possessed by a Creepy Doll that's playing along for now? Not an immediate concern, just

@ProphetZarquon Not sure of the CR but one of my favourite NPCs for sure

10:14 AM
Joking aside (not that I'm ruling Edwin out), the core of my concept is to guide players through D&D 5e's climbing, crafting, schmoozing, trading, & beast handling dynamics, while their combat power is still at the level of Cantrips & trait-buffed whacks with a weapon from their Background...

So, yeah lots of "balancing" to do, in that one character needed conceptually will be a tank in terms of raw CR, & each player character will need specifically targeted buffs consistent with their chosen Background or assigned stat-block...

@AncientSwordRage at school, but not home

See, this sounds like it's a classic funnel setup. Dungeon Crawl Classics has popularized the idea, but it's basically running "level 0" characters through a deathtrap dungeon and just drawing a new sheet from the master stack as a replacement when somebody dies. So don't worry about making survivable challenges - the "magic binding them together" is all the excuse you need to bring in somebody new when an existing character bites it.

Q: How can I ask a good homebrew review question?

doppelgreenerI'd like to post some homebrew material I've made, and I want people to review it so I can ensure it will work well. How can I ask a good question like this? Q: How do I evaluate whether my homebrew race is balanced?

Purple MonkeyI've just created a couple of homebrew races for my players to potentially choose from for an upcoming campaign. The problem is, I have no idea how well they stack up against the official races when it comes to actual game play and I'm worried some of the bonuses or features are either going to ...

Would it be useful to have a question for "how do I evaluate whether my homebrew equipment is balanced" and another for spells?
(I don't know if this is something that's too broad to ask about like that in D&D 5e's scope, unlike a race design.)

Spells specifically has a lot of guidance in the DMG (more than for races IIRC)
Equipment is a fascinating topic. It's not something that comes up very often (ignoring magic items, which has it's own set of oddities), and I'm not sure how much (5e wide) community theory/tools there is for it
For equipment, I'm not sure how much wouldn't just be "be very aware of what kind of option-space it goes into" which I'm not sure how easy is to generalize usefully

Oblivious SageFor the past seven years, homebrew review questions (that is, questions of the form, "Is this homebrew balanced?") have been on-topic and thus allowed. As brought up in the latest "How is the community doing?" meta, however, they're becoming more common and arguably more problematic. Are we happ...

@bobble heh

I moved to Texas about a year ago. I am only now learning how hard it is to get a Buffalo Chicken Sub. I want to riot.

Is the difficulty finding one, or finding a good one?

Also, I live excruciatingly prohibitively far from the nearest Bonchon.
I don't think anywhere near me makes Buffalo Chicken subs specifically. I can get one of those build-a-bear sandwich shops to give me grilled chicken with buffalo sauce on sandwich bread, but an actual sub eludes me to the maximal degree.
It's so bizarre.
This was such a common thing on the east coast, I readily found it at spontaneously-visited sandwich shops in like 5 different states.

When I was much younger my immediate family and grandparents vacationed around Europe for a week-and-a-half, it was extremely difficult to find anywhere which sold food compatible with my grandpa's stomach. We ended up eating Subway every day, except the start and end when we found a good Korean place.
I refused to eat any Subway for a couple years after that

Subway isn't terrible, I'd eaten it for like 2 months in a row back when I was a poor college student taking part in a research internship out of state. But there's something magnificently distinct about a buffalo chicken sub that cannot be recreated within Subway.

4:23 PM
If you were to riot, what would your target be?

AoE centered on myself.
There's an intentionality behind all of those ingredients being destined to be a buffchick sub, rather than left to be adhoc assembled into any number of other sandwiches. When a sandwich shop offers one, it's one of the items they've trained their entire tenure to construct. By its very nature, it outclasses a subway sandwich.
It's like a Level 20 Fighter out-performing a multiclassed character in what it does best: Attacking four times.

Would you attack four times to acquire such a sub?

I'd attack a 5th time with my off-hand.
I'd save up for a Potion of Haste and attack a 6th time.
I'd keep swinging until someone brave enough to approach me in my flurry provides me with such a sub.
But realistically, I'm probably just gonna make them at home from now on.
Also, I think most barbecue places in Texas get away with having lackluster barbecue because they get to claim the name. Whereas places in other states offering Texas-style barbecue have to fight for it. I've been served worse brisket here than I think should exist.
On a note more related to RPG, I've run into the opposite of the usual problem: Not enough players floating around. We always had the opposite problem in my groups, where we had too many players and not enough DMs. Now, I'm struggling to keep a party on the campaign-train.

My group is on summer hiatus as my work schedule conflicts with Mith's to a degree that coordination is impossible
(well, my sub-group; some other players in the same world are going)

4:42 PM
I'm just one player short of being able to balance things easily. Four players don't have enough action economy for some of the encounters that I expect to happen, and it's gonna be difficult to scale down.

Q: Why does the style guide prefer to avoid the wording “points of damage”?

user39796English language is not my native one, and I am translating DnD adventures for my players. The D&D House Style Guide says: Avoid referring to points of damage. Would HQIYA be Hot Questions In Your Area?

Unless you live in D&D 5e world, there are rarely HQIYA from RPG.

Maybe I should actually DO the "Why is there a flag+ that's thought to be offensive in Japan in a game made in japan?" designer reasons question... the answer is "Because in the Japanese version it was an iron cross and nazis."

Masters degree in Infosec.

Ah, yeah, I recall you mentioning that. That's quite the achievement.

Just glad to be getting done. It's been a grind.

9:32 PM
@bobble oooh, as vaguely as you need to stay comfortable answering, where in Europe?
@Axoren I'm a player in bobbles sub group and we found more than 3 in a play by chat session hard to manage
@Mithical out of context this could be something else

@Mithical This job ends next week, I'll be free-er then
@AncientSwordRage Around the UK. This was approximately 2016. How do I know that? The Brexit ads were everywhere

@bobble UK? That's where I live!
Specifically I'm in the south west. oooh arrr

9:48 PM
We had the pleasure (?) of being deliciously lost in the British countryside due to the bus driver getting turned around
Was very pretty
That was around London? But we went to Scotland and Ireland as well; I remember being out of the UK (Paris, Rome) but that may have been a different trip when I was much smaller

beams with happiness
@bobble 'tis indeed pretty

@AncientSwordRage We use Voice Chat and FoundryVTT (better than Roll20, imo)
The problem isn't giving everyone proper shine-time or inter-communication, usually, as we're used to that from just being in voice lobbies hanging out. It's getting them to be able to tackle at-CR encounters.

@Axoren yup, definitely a different problem to us
We've gone several sessions without rolling dice IIRC, and did a combat entirely without attacks or initiative

(I used Gust to blow some water from a park-fountain onto a fire-creature!)

Things got pretty dicey once the party decided, multiple individuals individually, to melee attack a Fire Elemental, and then provoke attacks of opportunity from it while running away without withdrawing.
They saw it happen to the Barbarian, then the Fighter, then the Cleric, and then the Wizard still thought "I want in on that action."

9:56 PM
@bobble that was awesome, NGL

After a few rounds, they asked me "How did we all take so much damage?" I wonder.

@Axoren hah

My solution is to ensure there's more party meat so that the harm can be distributed over more players.

My character is a Rogue who is pretty good at not being hit

That was also the same combat where the Bard used Healing Word on the Wizard to bring them up, the Wizard stood up from the Fire Elemental, and then tried to run and was taken right back down again.

9:59 PM
Though that was helped by an invisibility umbrella in one combat

My character is a Warlock who is pretty good at being hit and not dying
@Axoren maybe you need an in-character 'Combat 101' lesson?
@bobble you also got that nat 20 to heal up Fin

Probably one of my most durable characters ever was my Rogue/Fighter/Barbarian. Uncanny Dodge, Bear Totem Resistance, and Heavy Armor Master.
@AncientSwordRage We had a couple of those. It's hard to train people how not to panic.
And these are by no means TTRPG novices, I'm just running a wide-variety of encounters they haven't necessarily seen before and this stuff is scary. When people think Fire Elementals, they think little balls of hot and happiness spitting embers like little Pokemon. But then they're faced with them in an actual encounter and realize they're 10 ft. tall, ready to fold your dad on the playground when you run to tattle to him.
I'm also a dice in the open kind of guy, so when things happen to them, they at least get a good sense of why. Abilities get mentioned and explained once they're relevant and it contributes to their personal monster knowledge for the next time they run into one of these.

@Axoren the fire elemental we met was a little ball of hot and happiness!
Once I got it into a grill and to stop attacking us

@bobble And the Fire Elemental they met was ready to fold their fathers.
It was unfortunately rampaging because it was the combination of multiple dead Genasi spawned from a failed ritual.
At some point, I should write up the way my setting handles Genies, Genasi, and Wish, and how they're all interconnected. I worked with another DM on the idea, and we really liked what we came up with. Unifies a lot of concepts and explains the power balance of beings that can literally warp reality with their abilities, but only if someone else asks nicely.

@Axoren oh, ours started off huge but my character baited it near a fountain

10:11 PM
You're a monster, that's like bringing a Fire Extinguisher to a Charmander fight.

bobble's character sprayed it with water from gust like they said

I misread what that as about before

And mine and Mith's used minor illusion to keep it from attacking

Now that I understand things properly, you're villainous firefighters.
From the elemental's perspective, of course.
You should have been more humane: outnumber it unfairly and beat it senseless with magic metal mallets until it went out.

@Axoren yeah it was summoned and not happy about it... Kept saying it was hungry or something 🤷🏻‍♂️

10:15 PM
"Sorry, I thought you meant thirsty." :devilish:

@Axoren hehehe

I might actually need to start looking for another player outside of the usual circles, but I don't know if I want to deal with the growing pains of getting someone new into the group.
We're 1/4th the way through the campaign, at level 5, and we're losing one of our more active roleplayers. The others feel more comfortable taking a back seat, but the player we're losing takes initiative to drive the plot so I don't have to do awkward railroad-y things.
I can't really let the party steer if the primary person who did is gone, but I don't really like the idea of introducing someone new to the group entirely and putting them in a position to steer, either.

@Axoren some people would be happy to do that
If I had any free time I'd be up for that exact thing

I'm just worried about the social dynamic that would result from it.

@Axoren I have that affect on people

10:28 PM
Well, not you specifically, but like anyone

That's understandable
I do often get worried about taking over chats/games

10:43 PM
I run into the issue that I'm the most face-y person in my circles, but I'm not always the face character. I have a lot of not-the-face guilt.
I generally want to be able to sit back and ride with the party, just to avoid that tendency.
Being the DM, I've been enjoying the opportunity to never really be in that role
The party can't ever just be like "What do you think we should do?" to the villain, or the merchant they're negotiating with, etc.
Villain: "Give me the orb."
Merchant: "Buy at sticker price."
