@AncientSwordRage didn't V:tR solve these issues?

12:26 AM
@AncientSwordRage I dunno about what V:tR did, but more recently the White Wolf license got subcontracted from Paradox to a different dev team that did a lot of harm.
Oct 13 '19 at 0:46, by BESW
They outsourced their Vampire RPG to a group with known and clear ties to white supremacists, which then began dog-whistling white supremacist rhetoric in their publicity material about the new version of the RPG.

Ben
[wave] @all

(On reflection, "dog whistle" is a generously soft sell for what WWP was doing with V5.)

12:45 AM
How is that day going
Or this day. Depends on your perspective

@BESW ooof I knew it was bad, but not THAT bad

Ben
I've been admiring some of the Diablo answers over on SFF.se by @AncientSwordRage
Amongst the chaos

@Ben Brain little worky

@Ben good title for a book

Ben
@AncientSwordRage You know, that is a great title for a book
Maybe my book... 🤔
@BESW as a wise person once told me...

12:55 AM
@BESW They distilled the clans to vampire tropes

@AncientSwordRage While I admire what the Dicebreaker article is going for, it seems a bit odd that they're gushing about all the advances made by V5... without a single mention that V5 is also the edition with the WWP texts equating pro-bono lawyers and neo-Nazis, and trivializing real-life human rights atrocities.

@BESW yeah seems odd

It wouldn't even undermine the article's point, but reinforce it with an example of the publisher taking action to curb harm. (though naturally, if it DID undermine the article's point I'd find its absence even MORE suspect)

@BESW should provide all the facts regardless
I need to go an salvage a worldbuilding question....again

Ben
All this vampire talk reminds me of a funny meme my gf sent me recently
- Dracula darling, you have something stuck in your teeth
- Vhere? Here?
- No...
- Here?
- No, just go look in-
- GO LOOK IN VHAT, SARAH?

1:08 AM
The British TV serial Ultraviolet (1998) had a vampire-hunting gun fitted with a small video camera display next to the sight, so you could check if your target was a vampire or not.

Ben
@BESW I never understood the reasoning for that - why can't vampires be seen on camera?

Because most camera lenses contain mirrors.

Ben
Ahhh yeah that's right.

And/or the interpretation of "can't be seen in a mirror" extends to other methods of "capturing" the vampire's image.

Ben
So what's you're saying is...

1:12 AM
Amusing side note: if it's strictly "can't be seen in a mirror," then many cameras could capture the vampire on film, but the vampire couldn't be seen through the viewfinder, because the light has a direct path to the film but bounces off a mirror to get to the viewfinder.

Oh, and if it's that mirrors use silver backing and the silver is the problem for the vampire's image: there would've been a period in the 20th century when a vampire was more likely to be reflected in an aluminum-backed mirror than captured on silver-oxide film.

Ben
@BESW That one always reminds me of the gif of the person walking past the mirror in one of those "revitalise" masks and does a double take and screams at their reflection

Personally I really respected Ultraviolet's approach to explaining this stuff, which was "We've been trying to figure out how vampires work for years and we know this stuff is true but we can't figure out why and we're kinda mad about it, honestly."

Ben
Vampire seeing themselves for the first time in x-hundred years
@BESW Lolol

1:23 AM
> Michael: Where's all the crosses?
Angie: And holy water? Jury's out on that. It's a bit like homeopathy. It's a question of faith, on both sides. They can be superstitious, too. In my opinion, religion is a placebo, which isn't to say placebos can't work.

@BESW Which raises questions about mirrorless electronic cameras... would they be able to capture a vampire's image? Or would any silver in the electronics interfere? In which case, could you even record a vampire's voice? Can they make phone calls?

Ultraviolet vampires also can't use telephones; their voice doesn't carry on the line. When they want to make a call they either use a proxy or a text-to-voice machine.

Ben
@Adeptus If that's the case, no wonder they get so grouchy - being entirely cut off like that would make anyone feel like they got the sharp end of the stick

But since it's set in 1998, some modern digital tech applications don't get addressed.

Ben
@BESW I think I did see something about a jewish vampire once, the hunter came in with a cross, the vampire got quite upset, and they ended up having an in-depth discussion about faith and religion and such.
Then the vampire killed the hunter. Lol

1:27 AM
@Ben That's an interesting idea... does any religious symbol work, or only ones that the vampire recognises? Ones that they (used to) put faith in?
we have the Ultraviolet series on DVD, I should get around to watching it sometime.

Ben
Well, as @BESW has linked, it's questionable... it depends
What happens to a scientologist vampire, or a muslim vampire?

Some depictions of vampires tie their reactions to objects of faith, to their origins.

Ben
They don't have any "symbols" per se, or symbols that carry the same meaning

A popular one is that the first vampire was Judas Iscariot, hence the cross and the silver are direct references to his sin.

Ben
@BESW I haven't heard that one before... I like that

1:31 AM
The (almost hilariously pretentious) 2020 Dracula BBC miniseries suggests that Dracula is vulnerable to the faith of those whose blood he drinks... and then dismisses that and says it's all purely psychosomatic.

1:46 AM
@BESW XD
@BESW ehehe. good mirrors anymore are basically polished aluminum blocks

Ben
Could probably be moved over to Dragons, actually

@BESW I love it
@Ben happy either way

2:08 AM
@BESW that is unfortunately very consistent with how much they ignore internal continuity in other properties XD

Ben

Slifer DragonI've been creating a character and thought that it was cool for her to have brass knuckles to fight, but then I've seen that in the Core book (pg. 180) says that brass knuckles deal 0 damage (appart from the damage that you deal with raw brawl. Q: What is the origin of "Improved", "Lesser", and "Greater" in spell names?

Petr HudečekIn D&D 3rd and 5th edition, many spells have variants that begin with the words "Lesser", "Greater", or "Improved" attached to the name of the basic variant of the spell. Q: Is this houserule for upcasting Haste balanced?

Thomas MarkovHaste is a great spell. I want to make it better at the cost of higher spell slots. Additions to the spell description will be added in italics. HASTE 3rd-level transmutation Casting time: 1 Action Range: 30 ft Components: V, S, M (a twizzler) Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute Choose a wil...

@ThomasMarkov Doesn't look like it (AFAIK experimental reasons have a weight/score of 1)

Weird. Mind if I ask in charcoal hq?

Go ahead

@ThomasMarkov I definitely have opinions on it... may just link a bunch of related questions and try to formulate an answer

For those who have played with haste more than me, how often does the spell ending come into relevant effect?

3:26 PM
@ThomasMarkov I might consider increasing the duration of the penalty upon losing concentration as well.

@Someone_Evil Approximately never XD (I wrote about that somewhere...)

@NautArch why do you mean?

Isn't that already in?
> For each additional effect chosen, the target cannot move or take actions for an additional turn after the spell ends.

@ThomasMarkov Oh! Missed that.

:56902696 waiting :P

3:29 PM
(removed)

@Medix2 I added a phrase per your comment: "each option can be chosen only once"

I wonder if this just hyper incentivized the monsters attacking the caster of haste since removing an opponent for three turns is... quite strong
@ThomasMarkov As if it wasn't covered by the stacking rules XD
Oh... I think I broke it

@Medix2 what did you broke

Gotta check something first...

If its just an unintended wording thing you broke tell me now instead of basing an answer on it :P

3:32 PM

Sorcerer upcast and twincasting...ohyeah baby

@NautArch mmmmm

Oh you could ring of spell storing haste... I've never really thought about that before

@NautArch you gonna let me use this in our game? :P

@ThomasMarkov I'll consider it
need to spend more time analyzing.

3:34 PM
need two more levels before its even an option. We got time.

but we've got some time to figure it out
yep

I will be taking haste at 6th level though.
cuz its awesome.

I'm all for adding upcasting to spells to keep them relevant, but I'm not sure haste is where I'd start

I think ive got the wording of the 3rd bullet in a good place.

I now want a 17th level Thief Rogue with this spell...

3:41 PM
Is it that much of an improvement for rogues?

In my first draft I had it allow you to take your full attack action. An I thought “why shouldn’t I let the fighter have 12 attacks in one turn?” But I thought better of it.

@Someone_Evil They get two turns, so they'd get six actions

Ah, so the intent is for it not to give more than 2 attacks with that action. Isn't there a ranger (subclass) feature that gives add attacks on top of that, how would that limited

Does this question have only idea-generation answers so far?
So far no answer has actually backed up why their ideas would work.

@Someone_Evil This one?

3:49 PM
@Medix2 But still only 2 sneak attacks, no?

@NautArch I felt it was a duplicate
@Someone_Evil That's true, but they do get use magic device oh wait... that's not Use an Object :(
@NautArch Much like this one

@Medix2 I wouldn't unhammer it if you did so
But all of those answers should probably get flagged asking for support?

@Medix2 Use magic item as their normal main and then attack with haste actions seems like a fair line, but not sure how much you're using the upcast at this point

@Medix2 I reworded the third bullet, does it make sense?

@NautArch *open drawer of post notices*

3:53 PM
@Someone_Evil hehe

post-it-notices

@ThomasMarkov Invalidated current answer

@Medix2 I dont think it did?

You went from 3 attacks to 2?

I didnt change the meaning, I just made it more clear that it isnt an additional additional action

3:55 PM
Oh it wasn't?
OH

Q: Grey Ooze armor destruction

Nooby DMWhen a Grey Ooze hits metal armor, it reduces the AC by -1. When AC hits 10 then the armor is destroyed. My question is this. Does this destruction ignore any dex bonus that might be there, or include it? I assume the former but I want to make sure I'm handling it right.

You get two attacks instead of the one with the haste action.

@HotRPGQuestions I really wish we could bounty questions.

@ThomasMarkov Yeah I got it now, interesting

@TheDragonOfFlame's suggestion at the end of their answer is an interesting one though. Going from it, if you do need to slow down the upscaling, adding one effect per two levels higher seem like a good thing to look at

4:20 PM
seems to me like the only one that would be worth is the extra attack
2 attacks doubles how powerful it is, and the extra attack was the best to begin with
the +3 AC isnt twice as good as +2 AC, and the AC boost is a side effect in the first place, and the tripled speed compared to doubled speed, while good, isnt as good as two extra attacks
Basically, its a spell that doubles how good a 7th level fighter is for 1 combat, which is sort of broken
if you use on a barbarian or a monk its even better
imagine a monk making 6 attacks per turn at 7th level
or a berserker barbarian raging for 5 attacks with a greatsword

@TheDragonOfFlame It seems to me you should compare it to haste without upcast, rather than comparing it to a character with no buffs.

I am in my answer

4:39 PM
Wow, lot of folks don't like haste.

I love it. I love slow more though.

Same and same.
But these answers feel like frame challenges

So I understand where Bri is coming from, I just am not as harsh on haste.

Yep same
It's a spell you have to be careful with

I love haste

5:31 PM
My Sorcerer [who was pretending to be a Fighter] ended up using haste for most of her early combats since it allowed her to convincingly pretend to be a fighter, especially in combats that don't last longer than 10 rounds.
I do agree it can be a bit niche depending on context, but the fact that there's people who view it as being underpowered is kind of blowing my mind.

@Xirema When you do this kind of pretending, how many other people at the table are in on it?
Do the other players know, just their characters not? Or only the GM?

@Anaphory It was only the GM and me, although I did have to reveal her sorcerer powers a few months in because we were nearing a TPK situation and her unburned spell slots were the only thing standing between us and death.

How did the other players and their characters react?

One of the players spammed me afterwards like "I KNEW there was something going on with her!"
Apparently, if you spend months complaining about how boring the Champion subclass it, it's a little unconvincing when you show up with a fake character sheet for a Champion Fighter. 😛

Nice :)

We're happy to change the configuration for TRPG General Chat so experimental-reason-only reports are posted there. If that's something that's desired, then please have a room owner and/or site moderator indicate to us that's what the room wants. For context, the last time I'm aware of where the configuration for TRPG General Chat was discussed is here.
