@NautArch - Omg this is just a disaster.

Yep, it's the new background from the adventure. The adventure also has BG-specific versions of a bunch of the PHB backgrounds:
"Some backgrounds have at least one new variant feature that ties the background to a group in Baldur’s Gate, provided to give characters an additional connection to the city. Characters may choose to replace the standard feature of their background with one of these variant features. Each background also includes a bonus feature that marks a character as a native of Baldur’s Gate who’s familiar with the city — both its streets and its scars. These additional featu
@PeterCooperJr. The SRD and basic rules PDF don't include the same contents. there's some stuff in one but not the other

@V2Blast Korvin already set me aright, that the SRD is available on the Wizards site… somewhere. But it's not linked to on the page that has the Basic Rules PDF. And I already knew that D&D Beyond included both Basic Rules and SRD under their "Basic Rules" source that you can filter by.

8:28 PM
@KorvinStarmast I mean, DDB is free, to the extent that the same material is freely available elsewhere. Material that costs money elsewhere costs money on DDB too. It's more just a thing of what you prefer to use and whether you want to have something downloadable/permanent/etc.
@PeterCooperJr. Ah ok. I'm catching up on chat in order :P
and yeah, as mentioned, they're different documents with different purposes. DDB just makes it convenient to access all the freely available official material in one place. The inaccurate labeling does lead to some confusion
@PeterCooperJr. and advantage/disadvantage add a +5 or -5 respectively to your passive Perception.

Y'all, I'm a bit of an idiot lol. My job has security badges which you need to get in any door and I, in my infinite wisdom, left my badge on my desk before I walked out for lunch without thinking about it.
I didn't even realize until I got to the front door of the building and reached for my badge only to discover that it wasn't there
Had to follow a coworker in and then get someone else to let me into the part of the building I work in

@Himitsu_no_Yami So, a successful day in pen-testing?

@nitsua60 I don't quite understand what you mean by that?

Penetration testing--a friendly actor (you, in this case) attempting to circumvent security safeguards in order to expose weaknesses in policies/practices.

@Rubiksmoose I already left a comment reply there before seeing this, but as the others have said, I'd avoid using superscripted text for whole lines.

8:36 PM
Oh lol. Never heard of that before

(I've decided that I never forget my RFID for work, I just conduct occasional, randomized physical and social penetration tests.)

That's going to be my excuse from now on lol

@Rubiksmoose I agree! Classic persuasive essay-writing technique: Bring up supporting points, but also bring up anticipated counterarguments and address them. It's good to point out the designer statements (official or otherwise) and then address whether they're supported by the rules.

@Himitsu_no_Yami "Thank you for holding the door for me. I'll now be reporting you to your supervisor for breach of security protocols. Have a nice day." <-- do not say this!

@Medix2 I seem to recall a similar question as well

8:40 PM
@nitsua60 I would never say that lol

@NautArch DDB technically came out a few months before Xanathar's, but I doubt WotC made any design decision based on that, especially given that they hadn't really planned to make a digital toolset for 5e at all to begin with - I don't think they really plan around DDB functionality. The reason for the decision is probably unrelated to DDB.
@nitsua60 lol

9:02 PM
Wow. Just VtC'ed for the first time since the new reason-wordings went into production. Those are really hard to use!

9:24 PM
@nitsua60 That doesn't sound good.

@V2Blast Agreed, it's an unlikely scenario, just spitballing.
'm
@JohnP ruhroh

@NautArch Tried to install pivpn and ipvanish, that went sideways. Just tried to install emby and it can't see the USB drive.
I've got a training meeting, I'll blow it up try again later

@JohnP hmm check their forums. Good support there.
I think I tried and failed with ipvanish.

I'm almost ready to try a different program

There is something liberating in rolling all the dice in DND combat

9:38 PM
@Maurycy Nothing like the sound of a fistful of dice :)

@Maurycy I do think more games need a mechanic where you pick up all the dice on the table and roll them.

@JohnP it's not worth the pain

i suspect that "totally lethal encounter" querent hasn't yet heard of tucker's kobolds. or the tomb of horrors.

If you combine lethal encounters, you can kill the party 5 times, and they will be 5 times as dead

10:03 PM
@doppelgreener or the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs
the DM got sick of their complaints that the encounter difficulty was too low, and did the traditional thing

Q: Can True Polymorph grant Legendary Resistance?

IsaacCan True Polymorph grant Legendary Resistance? From the Monster Manual: "If a creature assumes the form of a legendary creature, such as through a spell, it doesn’t gain that form’s legendary actions, lair actions, or regional effects." Which doesn't seem to state anything clearly and...

@MarkWells lol, true

10:22 PM
@nitsua60 I got to do that years ago in the Navy: try to sneak on board the ship when I wasn't supposed to be there. If I got my shoebox (with a memo from the local flotilla commander) into the engine room, my job was to call up the Captain and let him know that I had won the game. Only got to make that call once.
@doppelgreener Nope, and they need to learn. :-) From a fun DM ...
heh, it appears that my stalker's back

@KorvinStarmast "why don't you roll up a few character sheets and i'll show you some things." "how many people do i need to make sheets for?" "oh, no, just you."

@doppelgreener Snort And yes, I met a DM or two back in the Auld Dayz who might do that

@KorvinStarmast Nice work! That's really impressive.

@doppelgreener The "nice work" was the various folks in the ship's crews who caught me before I got to the Engine Room. :-) The one ship where I "won" - uh, let's say that I was not on the Captain's Christmas Card list after that? :-p

Ha!
On the other hand, you might well have saved quite a few lives.

10:28 PM
@doppelgreener I hope so. We had a lot of worries about "infiltrators" going back to 1979 when I was on the USS America in Alexandria Egypt. I guess I 'grew up paranoid' in those days

I'm impressed they were looking out for that, and impressed by you managing to get through once.

@doppelgreener Yeah, it helped that I'd been caught a few times, so I got a little sneaky. (and playing rogue/thief in D&D had nothing to do with that learning, right? ;-) )

I bet!

But I also got a kick out of surrendering the shoe box to whomever caught me, and saying "I think the Captain will like you more today. You stopped me!"
It was fun to see their relief.

Haha!
That's fantastic
