5:00 PM
@KorvinStarmast I'd bet there is a lore mechanic for it involving deals with devils.

For some beings, yes. As I understand it, the general rule is "you go to the afterlife location that matches your alignment" and I am pretty sure that the 5e DMG has that text somewhere.

@KorvinStarmast Ohar is the DM from our previous convo.

5:16 PM
@NautArch OK, thanks.

Interesting question about whether or not a creature who has no memory will receive a sending
My hunch is that yes they will, and wil be quite confused by it.
"Who are you? Who am I?"

@NautArch Yeah, sort of like (I was about 22) when that gal came up to me and started talking to me about that date a few years prior, and I was like "uh, who are you again?" and weirdly, the conversation didn't end awkardly but ended up being full of laughs and we went on another date!

GcL
@NautArch Oooo that's a good start of a story. Creature got mind wiped. Receives frantic sendings pleading for help. "Who the heck is Obi Wan Kenobi? and why am I holding a glowing sword?"

@GcL ... that glowing sword is also why this person is in the doctor's office when the sending is received ....

GcL
@KorvinStarmast which is oddly bigger on the inside, but at least not knowing the name actually works in that case.

5:22 PM
@NautArch WHAT YEAR IS IT?

@GcL And then the music from The Twilight Zone begins ...

@KorvinStarmast hmm, good call in asking what problem they're trying to solve in all of this. it does seem super specific-but-also-arbitrary questions that are gravitating around something else.

@doppelgreener Honestly, I think the situation is as follows: they created a certain series of events in their game (character makes deal with devil, character dies and the deal is completed, turning them into a chain devil.) They don't know how to manage that and whether they will receive a sending message.
THey are looking for what happens in the normal circumstance of lemure creation to help guide them.

i see, ok

@doppelgreener original question

5:33 PM
that kind of thing would've been good for you to link in your original comment ;)
so that other viewers can understand what's going on

@doppelgreener yeah, I had thought about that...after my 5 minutes.
If you'd like to add the link, i'm all for it.

@NautArch done :D

@doppelgreener you're the greenest, thank you!
@GcL Sadly, I think the complicated bit about sending actually is the core of their question.

@doppelgreener Something about the recent RPGSE_meta "actual question" discussion over the past few days burbled up as I was looking at Naut's attempts to help.

GcL
@NautArch Which is a different question. Can I use sending to get a message to Bob, who is now a lemure? Subsequently, can Bob the lemure remember anything of his past existence as a human?

5:48 PM
@GcL Right, I think they are assuming that lack of memory is identical.

@NautArch d'awwww, shucks

GcL
They're related are separable. You don't have to remember anything to get sending to work.

But they think you do.

GcL
@NautArch That was also my impression from their comment thread.

@GcL Is Bob the lemure related to Bob the builder?

5:49 PM
@GcL Which is also a good question, but I think more easily answered.

@GcL Weirdly, I think this whole question is like the old True Polymorph question about "is that a warrior's soul in a toad's body" except that with PC death, the issue has some subtle differences.

GcL
@kviiri Bob the builder made some shady deals, and they did catch up to him. Guess he wasn't the ultimate contract -or
@KorvinStarmast I've never considered that sending would not work with TP.

Btw, related: as with many DnD things, my first contact with Lemures was in *NetHack*. (Yes I'm aware lemures originate from Roman mythology or somesuch)

I was quite weirded out why those cat-monkey-things are represented by the letter "i", normally used for minor demons like imps and the like.

GcL
TP already has a lot of taxonomy breaking issues.

this lemure discussion is reminding me of an early magic card, Hyalopterous Lemure. The artist misunderstood what a lemure was, so instead of a restless undead spirit, we got a cute little faerie lemur.
2

GcL
5:50 PM
@kviiri That's what kept you from visiting Madagascar?!?! I'm so sorry.

@GcL And because True Ressurection can bring Bob back, the "is that really Bob in the lemure's body" is most likely answered as 'yes' but maybe it takes 9th level magic to get there?

@doppelgreener Yeah, this thing exactly :D

(they later made bronze calendar which was an in-joke about this kind of thing)

Seems like lemurs were indeed named after the mythological lemures, but I reckon they're better known than the original term is.

I also just generally believe that Ohar should just do what works for the story and this deep dive really isn't necessary except for general knowledge (which is always good.)

5:54 PM
Having hyaline or transparent wings, as an insect OK, that's a heck of a word hyalopterous
TIL today

GcL
@NautArch This is stack exchange. You will never find a more wretched hive of arcane rules and pedantry. What works may or may not have a place here. We must be cautious.

@GcL or should we be hyalopterous?

@GcL Damn telling a story, there are rules!

@GcL Uh, if you TP someone into an object, I don't think sending works ... but I am happy to be shown that it does.

@KorvinStarmast nah, you're not a creature

GcL
5:57 PM
@KorvinStarmast I'm entertained by the concept of telepathically conversing with a tea cup.

@NautArch OK, my soul is in an object, so until TP is dispelled my condition is object not creature?
@GcL I have said words to various small engines over the years as I worked on them, but I never expected a response

GcL
@KorvinStarmast Yes. Interestingly, the creature into object appears to protect you from instant death levels of damage as it doesn't state that damage carries over.

@NautArch Huh, was the One Ring Sauron's familiar?

@KorvinStarmast As a silly tangent, in the old text-based adventure game "Spellcasting 101", there's a puzzle called "The Island of the Lost Soles" where the puzzle is solely (!!!) to find all the lost soles... people who have been transformed into objects, occasionally ludicrous, according to their name.

@kviiri sounds like fun, did Sierra make that game?
(huh, where is my old copy of kings quest, anyway?)

5:59 PM
@KorvinStarmast No, it's by Legend. I recommend checking out their other games too. Gateway is particularly good!

@kviiri thank you for the tip! :)

@GcL Sorta maybe somewhat possibly related: "How much damage can a druid Wild Shaped into a spider take without dying instantly?" (it's not really, just kinda reminded me of this)

GcL
@Medix2 That spell, like creature into creature, explicitly states damage carries over.

It's not asking about carry-over damage

@KorvinStarmast I've only played the first game of the Spellcasting series. It's about a mistreated boy who finds refuge in a wizard school (should be noted it predates Harry Potter, though!) and it's got a fair amount of sex comedy and toilet humor, and also a few jabs at genre conventions in general. The Gateway games are, conversely, almost completely serious or at most having a bit of dry humor: there is sadly one section of Gateway 2 where it's obvious they had a different writer.

6:02 PM
@KorvinStarmast well, your soul may be that of a creature, but your actual type is that of an object and you are an invalid target for the spell.

Gateway is based, loosely, on the Frederic Pohl novel, btw. Very loosely. It's not quite as grim as the novel is, which probably makes for a better game.
Then there's Eric the Unready, which is like Spellcasting a parody of fantasy tropes, but unlike Spellcasting its humor is mostly clean.
Gateway's probably my favorite of the bunch.

GcL
@Medix2 It's not asking about carry over damage, because it seems like the OP assumed you had to hit 0 hp on the nose... which is not the case. The question is about carry over damage and the relationship with instant death levels of damage for the polymorphed form.

That's fair. I guess with true polymorph (creature --> object) there's no carry-over damage because there's no hit points

GcL
@Medix2 Objects can have hit points and take damage. Shatter comes to mind as it's impressive in it's damage output to both foes and the things near them.

But why would that end the spell? It doesn't say your revert if the object breaks or even stops existing

6:06 PM
@KorvinStarmast Have you read Pohl's Heechee novels?

Nevermind, the 0 hit point part is in the general description at the top, mb. Yeah I guess the object can take infinite damage and be a-okay

GcL
@Medix2 "The transformation lasts for the duration, or until the target drops to 0 hit points or dies." I guess a broken teacup has 0 hp. I think disintegrate might still skip it.

And maybe instant-death, maybe(?)

GcL
@Medix2 Probably not, since it just kills the teacup. Damage doesn't carry over.

And? I still think the Wild Shape question discusses exactly this scenario and does not involve carry-over damage, but oh well
Though disintegrate wouldn't work

GcL
6:13 PM
Wild shape, polymorph, and TP creature-to-creature all have explicit statements about carry over damage.
TP creature-to-object doesn't include the carry over damage.

Why does instant-death have anything to do with carry-over damage?

GcL
@Medix2 Instant death only applies if the result of the damage is greater than 2x the character's hit points. So dropping the teacup off the cliff does 200 damage. Tea cup goes to 0. Turns back into Bob. Bob takes no damage and isn't dead because the spell doesn't state damage carries over in the creature-to-object use.

Agreed, my point is the teacup took enough to damage to instantly die and so Bob is dead

GcL
@Medix2 If the teacup ends up with -1 hp, then it doesn't revert because it never hit 0 hp?

You don't have negative hp in 5e

GcL
6:17 PM
Does taking damage hit 0 hp, before going negative?

And that's why I linked the Wild Shape question
It depends on how you interpret the timing of when you should check for instant death

GcL
"When damage reduces you to 0 hit points and there is damage remaining, you die if the remaining damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum." You're applying this before the spell effect of when you hit 0 hp, you revert.
The player would have a choice of which of those two things happen first per Xanathar's

I'm saying you can apply it either way as gone over in the already linked Q/A
Most things don't die on their own turn, so it's likely the GM would have that choice
It's just that one thing lasts "until the target drops to 0 hit points" and the other happens "When damage reduces you to 0 hit points" it's not exactly clear if one is strictly before the other.
Sorry I just... think this is exactly like the Wild Shape case, and don't think I want to keep talking/arguing, apologies

6:37 PM
@kviiri Fred Pohl? Um, maybe? I read some of his stuff in the 80's while at sea, but not recalling titles.

@KorvinStarmast Mm, okay. It's not like reading his work is the pre-requisite to enjoy the game, I was just curious. The setting is conceptually the same, although the plot diverges.

@kviiri OK, I'll need to check on what of his I have read. Are the Heechee ones good?

@KorvinStarmast I've only read Gateway, which I picked up after the game. I don't remember much of it, though, apart from the conclusion and the setting which is shared with the game.

@kviiri If I get a chance, I'll have a look at the games. I have a trip coming up in April where I'll have some free time.

Humanity has found, in our solar system, a hollowed-out asteroid containing some high-tech stuff including a large number of FTL-capable ships with easy but inscrutable controls. Just punch in some glyphs and press go --- and hope the co-ordinates you entered get you in a safe place with good loot. (In the game, you don't have to worry about the co-ordinates given being safe, though)
The player character is, like the protagonist of the novels, a "prospector" who's job is essentially to test-fly those ships in hopes of finding a huge stash of Heechee tech somewhere.
The game is more "Star Trekky" in certain aspects. Having the co-ordinates be a Russian roulette wouldn't make for a good adventure game, so instead you have adventures in the different distant worlds you visit, as well as on the space station of Gateway itself.

GcL
6:52 PM
@NautArch is the logic of this answer presented clearly?

@GcL reading now...that's an old question! That SSD never liked an answer from (yet)

GcL
You can drop the other two items from a list of clauses OR'd together, right?
Those should each stand on their own.
"You automatically revert if you fall unconscious."
"You automatically revert if you die"
@NautArch We'll see what he thinks of the logic put forth there.

7:12 PM
@GcL That logic works for me.
especially with the "if you die"

GcL
And it's easy enough to follow?

@GcL for me, yes

Q: What is a "quality check"?

NathanSIn the Appendix A of Ghosts of Saltmarsh, there is a section about Magical Storms on page 205, relating to each of the different schools of magic. The one about divination magic says: What is a "quality check"? Is this a mistake? I assume it means ability check, but maybe it refers to somethin...

GcL
I was reading some other answers about related topics. In a comment it was asserted that changing shape doesn't alleviate conditions like prone or poisoned, so it doesn't alleviate being dead.
However, that didn't ring true for me as "dead" isn't a condition like prone or poisoned.

And there is a specific gate regarding death for wildshape and what happens when you cross it
also...how does an awakened cat get wizard levels...

GcL
7:17 PM
I'm entertained by the statement, and wat is an awakened cat?

@NautArch what stops it?
@GcL A cat on whom the spell awaken has been cast.

@Carcer I guess nothing but a DM?

GcL
@Carcer That's entertaining.

An awakened cat won't be a very good wizard, since it only has an Int of 10... but as an intelligent creature there's no inherent reason it can't gain some levels.

Yeah, I guess it's just a creature at that point.

GcL
7:20 PM
Regardless of how it got fire shield, this is the interaction of two "you get hit" effects where one of the effects prevents getting hit in the first place.

i'm also having a really hard time not seeing that's a duplicate, but maybe the fire shield is enough of a difference?

GcL
@NautArch It's essentially the same thing. Does using shield to give bonus to AC prevent other "when you get hit" effects from triggering?

@GcL yeah, but is the fireshield different enough as a question from armor of agathys?

GcL
@NautArch cold vs fire damage?

I guess I can go ahead and close and if a gold badge or enough others disagree they can reopen it.

7:25 PM
too late!
now I am the golden one

@Carcer I shall undupe it!
:P

how dare you
it took me by surprise actually
I got the gold badge earlier today and yet had forgotten I had it by this evening

@Carcer mazel tov!

@Carcer woohoo! Kiss those dupe-voting days goodbye lol

I'll try not to go mad with power.

7:36 PM
I also really wish Orcsplunder would explain what they're look for in their bountied question
Also, if the awakened cat was created by a player, would that then become a NPC and get a share of XP?

GcL
@NautArch I like to think the cat went off and had it's own adventures... like most cats do anyway.

@GcL Ha!

GcL
Maybe it could come back with some heads of wererats or something to leave on the back doorstep of the wizard.

awakened cat says: screw you guys, i'm outta here

Calm down, Cartman

GcL
7:41 PM
"I cast animal friendship on the cat!" "Fine. It turns around to show you it's butt hole while demanding petting and fresh wet food."

yep, sounds like cats

I remember one time, in a Pathfinder game I was in, I was playing an Alchemist.

hmm

But not just any old Alchemist
for you see, there is an archetype called the Vivisectionist that has the trait of dropping your bombs, and instead granting you Sneak Attack, along with adding a few extra spells to your spell list for free
Namely: Anthropomorphic Animal and Awaken

And top that off with some mutagens.

7:49 PM
paging doctor Moreau, huh

I was slowly building myself an army of small cat-alchemists with opposable thumbs
and bombs
lots and lots of bombs
It was very slow going though, as it was roughly 9K gold/cat

Sounds like cat-astrophic meow-hem to me.

plus about 2 days of work
And yes, I did have mutagens
I tacked on the Beastmorph archetype in addition so I could get some of the sweet, sweet pounce action going on.

hmm, can a cat perform somatic components?

It can if it's been hit with Anthropomorphic Animal
The spell turns the target animal into a biped with thumbs

7:53 PM
@Carcer where's the fun in that?

I have painful memories of the day when I saw a "let's post anthropomorphic versions of video game characters!" thread on an image board and the opening image was Mario as a cat girl. That's just wrong. "Anthropomorphic" means that it's made more human-like, not less!

also, alchemists in pathfinder don't need to perform somatic components(or verbal) for spells. They instead drink them from a bottle

Are you saying that it's possible to have message in a bottle?

I mean, just teach the cats to make money, then it's like any of those idle farming games.

9k for one cat. Cat helps you get back to 9k.

Eventually, the cats pay for themselves.

@Yuuki nice try, but no. not on the Alchemists spell list.

7:55 PM
@RevenantBacon sorry, meant 5e. Don't htink that spell is available?

@NautArch Nope, definitely not in 5e :p

Aw, I sure would like to be SENDING OUT AN SOS. SENDING OUT AN SOS. SENDING OUT AN SOS.

@Yuuki listen here you

@goodguy5 Yea hey. I actually visited the customs museum last fall and thought of this

huh?

7:57 PM
I mean, they have a dog that can smell money. What's there to prevent it from sniffing itself a stable income outside the office and going self-sufficient and rogue?

GcL
@RevenantBacon How is holding a finger up and glug glug glug noises not somatic and vocal?

@GcL not VOCal, VERBal. Has to be actual words (arcane words, usually)
@GcL Also, flipping off you opponents while you chug down an invisibility brew is rude.

8:14 PM
@kviiri ah ha

8:40 PM
@goodguy5 A dog's sense of smell is a miracle really
They can smell money, they can smell food, they can smell drugs. You pretty much can't hide anything from them. But it's getting more and more useful, with medical dogs being able to detect a variety of conditions by smell, even stuff like cancer.
I wonder why they aren't used to detect neutrinos or large primes.

9:00 PM
@kviiri The Primes wouldn't stand for such insolence, likely.

Every so often my wife and I talk about dogs vs cats and I always bring that up.

She generally responds with something along the lines of "Cats can probably smell cancer, but choose not to tell us"

@goodguy5 Lack of willingness to form cooperative bonds, rather than selfish bonds, is what makes cats inferior. #BorkClan4Lyfe

Wanna hear a pointless story?
I like pointless stories

cats form social bonds and cat colonies exhibit cooperative behaviour
heck, the stereotypical cat behaviour of bringing dead things as presents as a cooperative behaviour; it's providing food for the other cats that aren't or can't hunt

This is generally my response.
"they could probably sniff out cancer if they wanted to"
me: That's worse!

9:13 PM
When I was a kid, I think on the third grade, some musician from a different culture visited our school. I honestly had zero touch for geography back then so if I was ever told where he was from it went in one ear and out of the other. I remember he sang a few songs while playing a drum. I remember one of the songs was Guantanamera so I later inferred he was probably Cuban.
So last Sunday we were playing Cuba Libre, and I noted to my friend who was hosting us that there is a Spotify playlist available for it. He put it on and we played. At one point I was like "holy moley, this sounds like one of the other songs the drum guy played at out school back then"
Turned out to be Chan Chan.
Interesting that some stubborn neurons had decided that "yes, you might hear this song again in twenty years or so, so try to remember it!"

@kviiri My wife and I mumble/sing/hum Guantanamera a lot around the house, actually. Partially, because we refer to one of the baby zones (gated off, some toys, etc) as "Baby Guantanamo".

@goodguy5 I think "Guantanamo Bay-by" would work the pun better?

too dark

Guantanamo Bay is an endless source of plight in the board game, too. Basically under normal circumstances the M26 rebels of Castro can only leech government resources by kidnapping in cities or economic zones --- both of which the government can defend with relative ease. But there is an event card that allows M26 to also kidnap freely in Sierra Maestra due to the naval base serving as a source of hostages... and Sierra Maestra is an easily defensible rebel stronghold.

Listen, there's a reason dogs are "mans best freend" and it's not just because of how cute they are. It's also because they are highly trainable and form much stronger pack bonds than most other animals (besides humans, man, we'll pack bond with just about anything)

9:22 PM
thank you kevin

"You are feeling sorry for this lamp. That's because you are crazy; it has no feelings and the new one is much better!"

isnt that ikea?

unsure.

I think it is

Kiv, is your name Kevin?

9:23 PM
the older guy, great inflections

@goodguy5 Nay, but I wouldn't mind being Kevin

thats my jam right there

My name is from the proud Charles/Karl/Carl/etc family which basically means "[free] man"

@JeffreyWitty do note that while Al is similar to 5e due to its rule appropriation that it might as well be a different system.

9:26 PM
@Akixkisu I'm not sure that's strictly accurate.
Though, I am interested if @JeffreyWitty has had a chance to play outside of AL.

Q: Would the following Shadowblade and Greenflame Blade combination be legal?

Borislav SevcikLet's say I am a level 5 sorcerer and I have already cast Shadowblade. And I want to do the following on my next turn: Quicken Greenflame Blade for 2d8 (from shadowblade) + 1d8 (GFB dmg) on the main target and 1d8 + spell mod on the creature next to it. Then as my action I Twin the GFB again an...

I'd say DnD 5e feels like a different system from DnD 5e x) depending on who you play with

omg thats a me question

@goodguy5 sure, strictly it is organised, heavily modiefied play.

AL left a BAD taste
i would have prefered a 2e TPK

9:28 PM
AL is a bad taste.

in the tomb
evryone was a snowflake actor

@JeffreyWitty Based on your question I think we might have pretty similar tastes (as far as DnD is concerned, at least) :>

I haven't played AL in years, but the last time I did it was still very much 5e

build choices seemed to be more about "the character" than the "numbers"

I don't really play DnD anymore though, except my SO occasionally bugs me about running 4e for her and I think I will once I find the time.

9:29 PM
@JeffreyWitty I mean, that's a choice you can make.

My tastes are what i assume to be classic/,.... I did something unforgivable.... i got old

Or you just joined a group that plays differently.
And doesn't suit what you want.

i'm unsure if my assumption is valid, but it seems rp really was bolded in rpg's
of late

it's almost as if it's two of the three letters ;)
But you're never going to get the crunch of AD&D from 5e.

5e doesn't support it, imo.

Roleplay was always bolded.

9:31 PM
i thought it was really playable game
;)

You might want to check out something like the 40k universe of games.

oh i do 40k

^

@JeffreyWitty the rpgs?

and fantast when it existed
i cant find players here
in canada

9:32 PM
Deathwatch is an amazing game, if you can get people

Or no roleplay alltogether.

those Canadians.

Play something table top if you want to do the numbers and not the rp.

im sorry :)

@JeffreyWitty Just wait until you join a non-DnD group that plays some post-forgeist narrative-oriented game :P

9:33 PM
@kviiri i would be asked to go
lol
I can rp, and do
but i wouldnt call it my strong suit
well not 15 years ago....

@JeffreyWitty What kind of rp do you want to do?

I remember my 3.5 group. detailed hex maps, highly honed builds, tatical nightmares

Ugh, I signed up for this game at a con. Bottom five games I've played in my life.

It was a Pathfinder (1e) game with a Pathfinder Society knockoff, called "Requiem for a Wedding".

And the session was literally running errands for a wedding between two high ranking military officials the next day.

Like, get best man trinkets, get a cake, get food.

One optional bandit encounter.

It was awful and the writing felt like the Comic Book Nerd from The Simpsons wrote it.

And rp?
@JeffreyWitty and what rp did you like?

mostly direct statements to npc's, when required

9:35 PM
So no rp?

"very light" on it
I like to have a slight persona in game
not like the mordern "edgelord" i read about though

@JeffreyWitty Like I said, you might as well play a table top game to get that number crunch. Highly recommend you to try it.

@JeffreyWitty But yes, I sympathize, that's one of the reasons why I play more board games than RPGs nowadays. My group's way of playing DnD tries to de-emphasize combat, so it doesn't really work for me as a strategy exercise, and the rest doesn't really live up to what I'm used to in systems like Apocalypse World. I feel like I'm happier playing more straightforward board games for strategy kicks and AW or such when I want to RP. (sadly my group retains a skepticism towards non-DnD systems)

@Akixkisu I do love war gaming, was hoping for a more "co-op" feel

9:38 PM
I have done lots of systems, old "classic" WoD, rifts, heros unlimited

of course one can role-play in even very crunchy games, but I hope you still catch my intent.

but I always come back for a guygaxian death headache
and never get it lol
DM: "you.. just... walked past an open door in a dungeon with little care?"

@JeffreyWitty If you're fine it not being a clear-cut wargame, we've had great fun playing Pandemic, a co-op strategy game about global disease control. But later on, I found Spirit Island to be even more appealing.

I have seen that
its similar to the PC title of many releases?

@JeffreyWitty Hm, not really. The only PC incarnations I can think of are those browser games where you try to engineer a deadly disease and then Madagascar doesn't let boats in anymore, is that what you mean?

9:41 PM
yes
plague inc? or some such
I remember they kickstarted a board game

Oh yeah, that one also exists! But Pandemic the board game is different, you try to prevent diseases there, not help them.

yes, I say sweet little wil wheaton all grown up playing it
saw*

Or rather, you try to prevent diseases from spreading too much while trying to discover cures. Sadly these aspects of the game are somewhat orthogonal, resulting in many-a-loss when new players are in. It's hard to grasp at first that there are more important objectives than just clearing bugs off the board.

So this "pathfinder"
is it truly 3.75e?
or well srd/open 3.5?

both

9:45 PM
@kviiri But man does it feel good to eradicate them.

Pandemic is good.

@JeffreyWitty I haven't heard of it being described as such before. I think the original gist was "alternative take on what DnD 4e should be like, plus by different people"

Though we are still on the Terraforming Mars train.
We played more than 60 session now.

@Rubiksmoose Yep. I kinda feel like Spirit Island is better executed, though, in that "winning the game" and "not losing the game" are more tightly coupled.

What's the current most popular old school D&D clone?

9:46 PM
humm I better google that
this it what happens, one day you walk out the door at 25, the next day your googling 2 editions into the now 15 years later

I think it's Dungeon Crawl Classics?

I was going to suggest "Mazes and Minotaurs" but I have no idea about the respective popularity of these systems.

I guess i really should background my playstyle
i am not the face
but if you need a build and have 24 hours I will grind a book into gold dust

@kviiri I saw my friends play that game, and was not super stoked at how long it took them to get going and how long it took them to play. At least, not for that evening. IIRC they learned and played it for 4? hours.

well...I could, in the day

9:50 PM
@JeffreyWitty That's a useful money-making strategy depending on how much gold dust ;-)

@Rubiksmoose Four hours is quite a lot, my games are usually closer to two. But yes, it is a relatively long game. I feel it has pacing issues with four players, and generally try to avoid playing it then. I'm a bit horrified that the next expansion is bringing putative support for fifth and sixth players.

I truly liked the look, on the face on the DM that had know me for over 5 years, of sheer terror when a handful of dice rolls stopped his heart
But that was the group, most were the "80/90's stereotypical" dnd types. We knew you stuff

@Rubiksmoose To add, I think there is a real UX problem in the first expansion that the game frequently grants the players event cards where the whole group often has to make some decision where the different options have several bullet points' worth of effects, while possibly also considering other effects on the same event card resolved after the main effect. Not too bad in an experienced crowd, but feels really clunky trying to read out those different options while hoping the others get it.

@kviiri Yeah they were playing with 4. And they consisted of a couple of very plan everything out my way types.
@kviiri oh yeah I can see how that would be clunky.

9:54 PM
@Rubiksmoose Heh. Yeah, I guess if one is very stubborn about planning things out the game can be a pain. For me, the sheer difficulty of planning too much in advance deterred my worst analysis paralysis. I just look for good combos without worrying if they're the best.

@kviiri It seems conceptually like a game I would like though.

@Rubiksmoose It's one of the very few board games I've liked a lot even solo :)
I think it's definitely the best with three players though.

I'll have to give it a look. Maybe I can borrow it off my friend one night

If a system has numbers, and there is the possibility of min-max, my mind will not settle until the numbers are their "best"

@JeffreyWitty This is also somewhat true to me, which is why I like it when systems do not give that possibilty without a good reason

9:59 PM
for me it almost becomes the game
or the part i truly enjoy, it is an oddity
