00:00 - 18:0018:00 - 00:00

6:00 PM
Yeah, that's why it looks like I'm either going to start a new character or find a mod that lets me reroll an existing character.

@Helwar Happily, I hadn't played a tabletop game when I played the Infinity games, so I didn't know about the dissonance ;)

@ACuriousMind I played Icewind Dale 2, Baldurs gate I could never get into. But seriously I kept just pausing all the time
and spellcasting was complicated. In ttrpg people don't move while you cast :P

BG II is still one of my favourite games of all time
ID were just dungeon crawlers - fine, but not memorable

true, but those were 2e and I was just learning 3e and it drove me nuts
the only 2 D&D games i finished is Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2
2 with all the expansions, 1 only the base game though

I played BGEE and stopped partway. Didnt get around to BG2. Is the story... present?

6:07 PM
oh wait, i have a wand of mage armor

@Helwar The expansions were much better than the base game in both NWN parts, imo, but I have fond memories of all of them

@ACuriousMind I disagree a lot with NWN2s expansion.... It suddenly becomes all edgy and you have a group of weirdos... I liked the spirit bear, and that's it

@MikeQ Yes, BG2 is a much tighter design than the meandering first part, though it still has plenty of side content completely unrelated to the main plot

story was too over the top for me

(At least each map has content, side or not, instead of a map full of just a few Xvarts :P)
@Helwar I will admit it was extremely over the top and I was there for it ;)

6:13 PM
@ACuriousMind THe thing that gets me is the narrator though... I dislike narrators :/

@ACuriousMind Story aside, what bugged me about BGEE is that everything is opaque, and you basically need a guide open constantly to explain the mechanics, choices, and where to go. Which kinda spoiled the gameplay.
The game presents choices, but one is always the dominantly best choice.

@Powerdork I have two Pathfinder games going right now. In one, the Mystic has high AC, saves and touch attacks and I can't really threaten him or the alchemist and it's a bit sad but I guess that's "high level play with official NPCs for you". In the other game one PC is throwing their characters at danger not really caring if they survive.

That's...most older CRPGs for you, unfortunately.
I love some of them to bits, but 'opacity' is a good word to describe their mechanically frustrating aspects

@MikeQ I have beaten the game with no previous D&D experience except for one arcade game that I didn't recognize as D&D until later, giving the higher strength to everyone I could and making them attack with melee or returning weapons while casting a few spells - and a lot of running from swarms, in circles, so that the swarm spell didn't start to spread shutting off my party.

a quick logic gate question.

the opposite of A AND B AND C
is !A OR !B OR !C
right?

6:21 PM
@goodguy5 yes

ty

@goodguy5 De morgan's Laws

that's the one. I can never remember the name to look it up.

@AncientSwordRage De Moivre's Law: negating expressions is... <dons shades> complex.

Hum guys... in 5e... Minotaurs and Centaurs can have boots... there is nothing ruling them out, is it?

GcL
6:27 PM
@Helwar The ones from Ravinica? or normal ones?

ehh... I dunno? there are several kinds of minotaurs and centaurs?

GcL
@Helwar The traditional ones aren't playable character races, and don't wear boots.

Oh well, I'm concerned about playable races
I mean, If I drop a pair of slippers of spider climb
will they be able to use them?

GcL
@Helwar I'd say no, but they can wear the hoof specific attire usually reserved for mounts.

Check the DMG section on wearing and wielding items (p. 140)

6:30 PM
@Helwar Sure? It would be just as powerful as if a human or elf wore the magic boots.

GcL
@MikeQ Except it would mitigate entirely one of the disadvantages of the race... so it's more beneficial to a centaur

It fairly explicilty calls out to use your (ie. DMs) discresion

@nitsua60 thats a different tangent

yeah a centaur would be able to wear 2 pairs?
@GcL is having hooves a disadvantadge? I guess if it rules out magic footwear, then yes...

GcL
@Helwar Climbing and stairs I think are specifically called out as problematic for them.

6:32 PM
Related:

GcL
I think it's double penalty.

@AncientSwordRage Option E, they wouldn't

You're asking how but you never stopped to ask why

@ACuriousMind I'm an Izzet mage at heart, not asking why comes naturally

Dovin disapproves.

GcL
6:36 PM
@Helwar Slippers and boots are footwear. Centaurs and minotaurs don't have feet.
I wouldn't expect humans to be able to wear magical accoutrements that are made to be worn on horns.

@ACuriousMind I don't think he's in a position to disapprove currently

@GcL Yeah, but isn't magical gear automatically fit to the wearer?

@AncientSwordRage I really appreciate the fact that they tried to give the centaur back pockets for a couple of those.

also now I'm thinking, a friend of mine describes his tiefling with goat legs... I'm gonna demand the boots of speed back :P

Maybe the boots are specially tailored for hoofed feet

GcL
6:39 PM
@Helwar That would be an exceptionally liberal interpretation of "fit". Pants fit legs. Shoes fit feet. Shoes don't fit hands, and pants don't fit your torso and arms.

@Helwar If the DM would like them to

@GcL true true

By this logic, can tieflings and elves wear helmets?

ok my hooved players will need to find a magical blacksmith for their magic footwear :P

6:40 PM
the point of pants is to cover genitals and keep legs warm, right?

So, I think either 2 (top right) or 4 (bottom right)

@AncientSwordRage Thanks, I just realized I have no idea who leads Azorius now...down the lore rabbit hole I go...

@Rubiksmoose it's really good, but how to they reach them?

@MikeQ also true

@MikeQ Well obviously tieflings would wear hellmets right?

@ACuriousMind Bolas leads them all, last time I checked :P

6:41 PM
@AncientSwordRage Buck real hard and hope what is needed falls out?

@goodguy5 depends on anatomy I don't want to discuss here
@Rubiksmoose that's where the buck stops

pants wore by a tiefling make room for the tail? XD

@AncientSwordRage XD

@MikeQ check again, the war is over!

GcL
@MikeQ tieflings would be a more interesting case, but their horns don't have a mechanical combat ability, so probably not worry too much about the helm designs that they can accommodate. I think the more interesting question is minotaurs. They don't even have humanoid heads.

6:43 PM
@ACuriousMind I think it defaults to lavinia

@GcL Dragonborn and lizardmen don't have that either
and aaracokra

@AncientSwordRage wait a minute, it's a horse, not a deer. No bucks involved!

GcL
@Helwar Ooo good point.

@goodguy5 You've noticed my filly.. I mean folly

@AncientSwordRage You really moosed that one up.

6:45 PM
@Rubiksmoose I'm on the hoof, no time to think of good puns

@AncientSwordRage Now these puns are getting really shoe-horned in ;-)

oh hey @Rubiksmoose now that I remember... I did half the tattoo ^^ The part with the letters is a little bit more expensive than I can afford now... but I'll definitely complete it at a later point. Thanks for the help in translating :)

@Helwar oh nice! You're very welcome!

@Rubiksmoose Neigh!

7:07 PM
Do people think a Coconut Crab is a well represented by the Crab Familiar?

yea
why not?
I mean, I'd also throw in "and you can crack open coconuts as a bonus action, provided that your familiar is less than 5 feet from you"

@goodguy5 Coconut Crabs can't open coconuts by themselves
they drag them up trees, drop them, then drop from the tree thmselves

@Helwar option F, outrageous outfit with half pants, fake sleeves and lots of belts.

@goodguy5 they're borderline small creatures and wouldn't have a swim speed
@Zachiel Belts? This isn't Innistrad

a friend has an owl familiar, but they have chosen a potoo owl that's like... palmsized. But hte stats are for biiiiiiiiiig owls. So we call it the swowl!

7:11 PM
@AncientSwordRage oh yea, I forgot about them not being able to swim.

Q: Dispel Magic VS a spell which has been Twinned Spell

Jason SiaI'm curious about what would happen, in combat, if a sorcerer twin spells a haste on the fighters of the party and an enemy then casts a 4th level dispel magic. Would dispelling the Magical Effect of Haste, end its effect on one or both of the targets? This would be slightly different from a s...

Q: Would an intimidated NPC be pugnacious?

ValamordeMy Human Shadow Magic Sorcerer attempted to intimidate a captive NPC cultist in order to extract information from him. After the intimidation succeeded, as announced by the DM, the NPC was extremely cocky and pugnacious towards my character in a way that seemed to me like he was provoking my ch...

@Helwar epic <3

Are you a player or the DM (ancient)

who me?

and why does the player want specifically a coconut crab?

7:11 PM
@goodguy5 player

oh not me

@AncientSwordRage In a mockery of saddles

@goodguy5 Aren't they the largest land-based crustacean?
And they're called so because they can crack open coconut shells with their claws?
Sounds pretty cool, if you ask me.

@Yuuki Those things are terrifying

Unfortunately, "coconut shrimp" is just regular shrimp deep fried in a coconut-and-panko batter.

7:23 PM
yea, just scrap the swim speed and let them crack open coconuts. seems like it should be fine.

They're cool/would be found near the PC I'm planning*

(*I don't have a group, but I'm planning ahead to stave off the D&D itch)

There's no size smaller than "tiny" in 5e, so there's no different between "tiny like a cat" and "tiny like a shrimp"

@Yuuki the coconut cracking is myth
but they will eat them

that's not what Octonauts told me!
@AncientSwordRage ah, the 'ol "make characters until I feel better"

@goodguy5 yup
@goodguy5 Is a leg span of almsot 3 foot tiny like a cat?

7:26 PM
sure. a cat can stand on its hind legs and reach about 3 feet

@goodguy5 true
long cat is long
I could swap the swim speed for a climb speed
I fancied they could also collect material components, because they're also known as robber crabs

that's actually a misunderstanding stemmed from the discoverer of the Coconut Crab, Robert Krabbs

@goodguy5 Me money!

> When I played Pathfinder, I asked my DM this when he wanted to do a monster campaign and I wanted to play a Cavalier.
Him: "Those things suck, you need a horse and they can fail their saves and be spooked. You need really good animal handling...etc"
Me: "What if I'm the horse?"

Counterpoint - Be a centaur. now you're permanently mounted on your horse.

7:38 PM
@RevenantBacon In before your lower half gets spooked and runs away

My legs!

@Yuuki coolio

So here's a new question, do centaurs need ride-by attack, or spring-attack?

Does 5e have Spring Attack?
Or what system are we using?

7:42 PM
Not by name, what is it?

I'd say you'd want to increase mobility and charging.
That way you can trample casters right off the bat before they can get a Heat Metal off on you.

@Yuuki ouch, heat metal on your hooves. Ouch ouch ouch

No, probably wouldn't have any effect actually. Hooves are like super duper long fingernails
@Yuuki I always go with Pathfinder by default. If you're doing 5e you'd probably want Mobility

I know next to nothing about horses. Would a centaur/minotaur need horseshoes? xD

Depends? Horseshoes exist because domesticated horses behave very differently from wild/feral horses.

7:53 PM
also define "need".

Non-domesticated horses tend to range farther but at a slower pace.

btw, don't look up baby horse feet/hooves.

Also, depends on the climate. Arid locations keep horse hooves dry and hard whereas wetter weather can soften them.

I'm not sure whether wetter weather worsens the wear

Do humans need shoes?

7:56 PM
@Someone_Evil Given how much glass litter exists, probably yeah.

huh
sorry for the burst of hooves questions... I'm about to DM on my original setting and one of my players wants to play a satyr (i made up the race), and he's asking all these questions to me :P I'm kinda extrapolating from the ofical hooved races

just cast mage armor on your feet

I think the real answer is "how much does your DM/Character care about hoof maintenance.?"
because boots and shoes have never once come up in my games (other than magical ones)

@goodguy5 Are you asking if the DM gives a hoof?

he's a lot into worldbuilding so all these kinds of questions while not relevant mechanically, are relevant to him :/

8:00 PM
also, no one has mentioned the centaurtaur

oh my..
that's worse than reverse catdog

Oct 18 '19 at 16:30, by Yuuki
If a centaur is a half-man, half-horse and a minotaur is a half-bull, half-man; would a taurtaur be a half-man, half-man?

what's a minocent, then?

where does the -cent come from?

@goodguy5 A Cretan who has committed no crime.

8:04 PM
And if this person really cares about world building in that particular way, then they need to decide what kind of region these satyrs are native to and what kind of life styles they lead - not only currently, but historically.

Have they faced any ecological pressures in the past couple millennia?

what are their buildings (and floors) like? How far do they travel and how do they do it? etc
And those things will all, eventually, get you to "do they wear horseshoes - and if so is it form or function?"

true enough
gonna crunch it
thanks @goodguy5

like, a person from Crete?

IS THAT WHERE CRETIN COMES FROM?!

@goodguy5 And what, if any, relation do they have with the Faerun god of law?
@goodguy5 Actually, no.
> From French crétin (“cretin, idiot”), from crestin, an Alpine dialectal form of chrétien, from Vulgar Latin christiānus in the lost sense of “anyone in Christendom”, often with a sense of “poor fellow”. Doublet of Christian.

cretin (n.)
1779, from French crétin (18c.), from Alpine dialect crestin, "a dwarfed and deformed idiot" of a type formerly found in families in the Alpine lands, a condition caused by a congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones. The word is of uncertain origin. By many it has been identified with Vulgar Latin *christianus "a Christian," a generic term for "anyone," but often with a sense of "poor fellow." Related: Cretinism (1796).
wild

tl;dr refers to Christianity /s

8:07 PM
and people who are deformed

1) a taur-taur would be half bull half bull. 2) Centaurs would probably want horseshoes because they would be behaving more similarly to a domesticated horse in regards to when/where/why they are moving. 3) In tangential relation to the line of questioning about cretins, the word villain is rooted in the Latin word villanus, meaning farmer or peasant.

@RevenantBacon but would Satyrs want horseshoes?

A tartare is, in fact, raw meat.

@goodguy5 probably. Would have the same reasons as a centaur for wanting horseshoes.
ie. Where they are, and how often they are there etc.

@goodguy5 I've been googling, Satyrs wouldn't want horseshoes, their hooves function different from horses'
I mean, goat's hooves

8:14 PM
Yeah, satyrs would probably want goatshoes.

@Helwar That depends on the version of satyr. some fantasy art depicts them as having the same kind of hooves as horses

true enough

Actually, that's insulting. Satyrs, if anything, would want satyrshoes.

I was thinking of satyrs as goat people, so was comparing their hooves to goats'
@Yuuki badum tsss

@Helwar Satyrshoes are the house slippers that you wear during Passover.

8:18 PM
get out

@goodguy5 Satyrshoes are what a Southerner does when asked what's the name for clothing you wear on your feet.

now that one, I like

I don't get it. My accent is too thick and I don't know enough accents to get the joke :P

Pregnant horses run faster than others.....
They have 2 horse power.

@Helwar "say 'derr (they're) shoes'"
I think Grave Cleric would be a great class option for a centaur. They have a lot of natural hearse power.

8:22 PM
X*D

Goats have cloven hooves and so the nail is too thin to shod

That sentence, while I'm sure is accurate, seems like you just started making up words.

@Yuuki I know where this is going now, still don't totally get it :P

@Yuuki taurtaur is IIRC the original spelling for a beef dish ... ;-)

@KorvinStarmast that's bull
;-), too, in case the pun is not obvious enough :P

8:36 PM
@ACuriousMind hehe, yeah, and I just realized that a few posts later yuuki dropped in tartare ..oops, missed that.

@Yuuki

Ben
8:58 PM
Morning all
@Someone_Evil Dogs can look up however.

@Ben What?

Ben
@goodguy5 I started doing this way back... made some power rangers, some decepticons, etc. The problem was that they always ended up humans. I wasn't using the system properly. I have changed that since, and now I have a Green Dragonborn (Green Power Ranger), A Tiefling Sorcerer; disguised as an elf (Haggar from Voltron), and a couple others
@Someone_Evil In response to your "Unblinking dogs". It's a quote from Shaun of the Dead lol

Do you hear about the wild West town that got sick if politicians and elected to have two horses as the sheriff and deputy? One of the horses is flightier than the other, so they make that one second in command. Years pass by and they're happy as can be with their choice if electing the equines.
But as time goes by they noticed wear and tear on the sheriff's hooves, as well as the deputies. "Who can fix our problem!" Cried the townsfolk. Finally a farrier stepped up to offer his services, but they are not impressed with his work and refuse his services.
Again they cry out, and again the farrier responds. Three times this happens until one dark night when the sheriff and deputy go missing. Finally, after searching they find the deputy, as well as the sheriff with new horseshoes.
As they approach the deputy bolts off. Furious they confront the farrier who merely says...

I'm just going to facepalm now

I shod the sherrif, but I did not shoo the deputy
@MarkWells wise

Ben
9:10 PM
I laughed at the joke, but I laughed harder at the preemptive facepalm
Which then devolved into a coughing fit, followed by a rather pressured sneeze.

@Ben happy to help....?

Ben
[Thinks for a moment] I do feel clearer, so yes; thankyou kindly
2 dogs are sitting in the loungeroom. One says "I'm sad, tell me a joke"
The other says "Ok, knock knock"
[Both dogs start barking]

@AncientSwordRage And the groans from my seat were heard across a pretty large room. Nice shaggy dog there ...

9:29 PM
@KorvinStarmast thanks, this is my first time writing it down

9:56 PM
What did Eorlund name his horse?
Braymane
I appreciate everyones unbridled enthusiasm for horse puns.
But it's a bit much.
My wife wanted a horse and I didn't oppose her because I didn't want to stirrup trouble. She said it would be a cinch to keep but I thought she'd be saddled with too much work. To help keep our marriage stable, I was spurred to get involved.
Bridled with responsibility, I said,"what the hay,it's got to be done. The mane thing is not to get upset when shod with extra work and stall around.

@AncientSwordRage You ever hear the one about the Franciscans?

Ben
A priest, a pastor, and a rabbi all go fishing. As they're sitting in the boat out on the water, the priest realizes he's forgotten the bait. He excuses himself, steps out of the boat and walks across the water to the car, and promptly returns, walking back across the water to the boat, then continues setting up the fishing rods.
The priest and the pastor don't react, but the rabbi is amazed! A miracle performed in front of him! Since the other two don't react, he keeps his thoughts to himself.
After a while, the pastor excuses himself, needing to visit the bathroom. Like the priest, he steps out of the boat, walks across the water to land, then after a few moments, walks back across the water and gets back into the boat. Again, the priest and pastor don;t make much of a deal out of it, but again, the rabbi is flabbergastered.
He thinks to himself, since he's never tried it before, maybe he simply does not believe enough? Should he simply put faith in God? He ponders this for a few moments, then finally decides. "I'm going to get us some drinks, I'll be right back!"
He steps out of the boat, and promptly sinks.

10:13 PM
wet rabbi
was he in the water long enough to get rabbarnacles?

Ben
As he's splashing about in the water, the priest and the pastor help him back in the boat, they say "Sorry, we should have told you the sandbar was on the other side of the boat!"
@nitsua60 I don't believe I have

'cause this is where lolfigsling comes from, yanno =)
@Ben Start here:
Aug 7 '16 at 20:50, by BESW
@nitsua60 I'm also very fond of the kind of shaggy dog story which ends in an extended... I'm not sure what it's called, where you take a well-known line and say words which sound similar but have a totally different meaning.

@nitsua60 Those would be feghoots.

Ben
@nitsua60 there are no results in google for "lolfigsling" :P

> Upon discovering that Miles Black, the famous phrenologist from Yorkshire, was going to take up yodeling to lonely goats in Bali, James White decided to balance four planks of wood on a beer keg and call it an abstract work of art in the style of a famous fourteenth-century architect, just going to prove that people will read any old garbage if they think there will be a good pun at the end of it.

10:17 PM
@Ben Ahh, but try "lolfigsl".

Ben
@nitsua60 [hearty chuckle]

user15026
@nitsua60 okay the Fransiscans one and the frog one made me laugh really hard

user15026
I needed that today.

user15026
Thank you for sharing.

Ben
@nitsua60 Ahh yes haha

10:18 PM
@Ash Did you... <dons shades, again> lolfigsl?

Ben
@nitsua60 Oooooowwwww!!!

I'd forgotten about this:
Aug 7 '16 at 21:07, by nitsua60
Speaking of laughs, I almost died laughing last week on the Cross-Bronx Expressway. Literally. I'd just taken a bite of a sandwich when Bobcat Goldthwait started telling a story about performing at a Juggalos festival; all while Robin Williams was providing color-commentary.
I've got my jaws uber-clenched to keep from choking, hyperventilating/laughing through my nose-which-doesn't-provide-enough-airflow, tears streaming down my face as I try to keep the car in its lane.
All I could think was "my wife's going to kill me if I die here, like this."

user15026
@nitsua60 not technically, I'm alone in the office :P

If I'm remembering correctly, that's an episode of Maron's WTF podcast where both Bobcat and Robin Williams were appearing.

Ben
I made myself laugh too hard at something way too dumb the other day.

user15026
10:21 PM
Laughter is good for people!

Ben
I intentionally messed up the phrase "don't spend it all in one place" in a message. I said "don't spend one place at too much money".
I followed it up with this gif:

So I have an idea for a feghoot but by the time I'm done, I'm fairly certain this topic will have been long gone.

Ben
I couldn't control my laughter for 5 minutes afterwards, and even now it's making me chuckle again

One thing that made me chuckle today was noticing that /r/SelfAwarewolves not capitalizing the 'w' in 'wolves' is likely on purpose.

1 hour later…
11:38 PM
@Ben this is a great gif i gotta say

Ben
I love it haha
