@Rubiksmoose ugh.... lemme see if I can dig one up.
And I recall a string of comments on a different answer by the same user, but can't find them... the comment thread must have been deleted. The only thing that stood out in my mind was something along the lines of "This makes me want to delete my account"

@GcL which led to the meta discussion on subjective answer support
after the brief chat room discussion

GcL
I like this example. Someone was frustrated and they were engaged in chat. That had a nice ending.
Way better than someone was frustrated and closed the browser tab.
Or someone was frustrated and went an a downvoting spree to vent/retaliate

@GcL Yeah, I also felt that this was an issue that progressed well.

GcL
It did start with user was frustrated.

@GcL I'm not sure there's a way to avoid that

GcL
6:16 PM
I disagree about that.

If someone is certain that they're doing something the right way about a sensitive subject and someone else suggests they aren't, frustration is likely to ensue.

Hello. Are there any D&D 3.5e, PF, or 5e experts in here?

I rarely like to use the word expert about myself... but I'd say I know 5e alright
As do many others here, probably to a greater degree than myself

PF here

I have a general question on whether there's explicit rules precedent, for any of those editions, for how to handle the mixing of player knowledge vs character knowledge. Specifically, as to when the player can see their figurine and the enemy's figurine on the battle map, but line-of-sight is broken between them (such as by a wall of gloom effect), is the player allowed to have their character make decisions based on the unavoidable knowledge of where the enemy is on the battle map?
For example, firing a ranged weapon into that square.

6:23 PM
I mean
I wouldn't have a figurine there

@williamporter well think one player knows and one doesnt type situation

Fair enough

Exactly

I'd let them make a perception roll to see if they can tell where the enemy is
If so they can shoot, but have a 50% miss chance

I think the 5e precedent is that it's frowned upon, and should be disallowed at DM discretion but no I don't think there are any specific "This counts as metagaming" lines

6:24 PM
Is there explicit rules precedent though?

due to total concealment
For PF yes

At least for 5e, a creature being out of LOS doesn't mean the character doesn't know where it is. Creatures still make noise and if they are fighting, running, etc. even more so. See also invisibility not making you autohidden.

Similarly, for pathfinder the player should get a perception check to see if they know where the enemy is

And if the figure being attacked has made no noise?

6:30 PM
Are they ethereal?

GcL
@EmrysTernal They have to be actively hiding.

@EmrysTernal I'm not sure about precedent, but it's about metagaming, table rules, and DM fiat.

No, but there are more situations than being ethereal where a creature could have not made significant noise and still have line of sight be broken.

If there is no way the character would know the enemy is there, the DM can do a few things. Ask how their character knows. If it's reasonable, give it to them. If it's questionnable, but possible, let them roll something for it. If there is no good reason and you're confident i that, then just tell the player that they can't shoot there.

They'll still make noise from their breathing, etc
Unless they're actively making stealth checks, you should use the base perception rules.
If their stealthing, it's an opposed roll.

6:33 PM

5E, irrelevant, I'm discussing PF

@EmrysTernal which game are you actually playing?

@william Not necessarily. If it's a magical trap that itself is stationary but has a physical presence (such as an orb on a pillar casting a spell that does not require line-of-effect), it would reasonably make no noise.

Traps and creatures are 2 different ball games

@williamporter sorry! Emrys was asking cross-edition.

6:35 PM
Traps have a predetermined perception check to notice them, which is what should be used. Creatures do not, though there are rules for noticing them

If line of sight is broken though, what perception check?

Scent, sounds, sense of heat, etc

@EmrysTernal Same check, using a different sense (hearing, smell?, etc.)

For context, I'm addressing this from a 3.5e perspective.

Then take my comments with a pinch of salt as they are from a 5e perspective

6:37 PM
but I want to know if there's explicit precedent when there's no way for the character know the enemy is there aside from metagaming.
Including no senses like hearing, smell, heat-sense, etc
but the player can clearly see the figure or source on the battle map

So the creature is ethereal? Otherwise those apply.

@EmrysTernal If you don't want them to metagame, either agree with them not to metagame or don't give them the information at all

It took me two hours to go to the dr's office and back that's 10 minutes away.

@Someone_Evil Goldstar on that one. I've often had DMs remove minis from the board that we don't know the location of.

Creatures breathe, hearts pump, slightly shift positions.
If your going to say their holding perfectly still, they better have and be using the Freeze Monster Ability, which would be a stealth check.

6:40 PM
The temptation to metagame is strong.

In terms of 5e, the explicit rule precedent is Rule 0: What the DM says goes. If they are doing something that is impossible for their character to do it is your responsibility to just say no

Alright

if the perception check would require a 50 to succeed (they are behind a flaming castle wall, 60 feet away) then you say "you dont know where they are, you cant aim at them"

Different question, for 3.5e specifically: Does the "darkness" spell brighten a completely sealed naturally-dark room to the level of "concealment"?

"Your appointment is at 1 o clock; you should show up a few minutes early to fill out paperwork"

Well, they didn't tell me that the office has lunch from 12-1 and that no one would even talk to me before 1.

Then I did all the things and they called me in at like 1:20 and took my vitals.

Then I had to wait for the doctor. Why even have 1:00 appointments?!
</rant>

6:42 PM
thats interesting - my experience with doctors has been they rarely eat a lunch and typically sneak a couple bites between each appt

I once scheduled an appointment for 4:30 at a dentist. I got an email and a text confirmation, to which I responded. I show up: oh we don't take appointments after 4.
YOUR SYSTEM LET ME SCHEDULE THIS

Do you want a brick through your window? Because that's how you get a brick through your window.

@goodguy5 'murrica!

To be clear, I mean the 2nd-level spell, not the spell descriptor in-general.

6:46 PM
Another time, same dentist: I was scheduled for the first appointment. Early, like 7. I have confirmations. I get a text 3 days before, says "your appointment today has been cancelled. We will contact you to reschedule." I figure it's a glitch or they will contact me. I get to the office day of, and here's a sign on the door that says they're closed all day.
I don't try to go there anymore

I've had relative success with my current Dentist.

@G.Moylan A dentist with a fist appointment sounds...painful ;)

oof
ha! I still had time
stupid keyboard. I can't tell if it's some kind of signal loss (wireless) or if it's my computer having a stroke. It skips letters ALL THE TIME
@ACuriousMind better than a dentist with a brick appointment

What's red and bad for your teeth?

Bigby's hand

6:52 PM
A brick

GcL
@G.Moylan Could be rollover. There is a maximum limit for the rate of individual keystrokes most keyboards can handle.

I should hope I'm not outpacing an $80 keyboard but I suppose it's possible

@G.Moylan I'm having big signal loss issues with mine. It got better after I covered the receiver with a piece of paper. Read somewhere that light can cause loss.

GcL
@G.Moylan Is it a mechanical keyboard? How quickly do you type?

@G.Moylan It's not unexpected. After all, keyboards don't have legs, although some have that weird hinge you can use to prop one up at an angle.

Q: What lighting condition does the spell Darkness create?

JonathonMany people hold to the interpretation of the spell Darkness that it is an area of total darkness. But this is not how I would interpret it, to me it appears as if the spell creates an area of dim lighting. Darkness This spell causes an object to radiate shadowy illumination out to a 20-...

@GcL it's a Microsoft Sculpt ergo-keyboard and it's definitely not mechanical.
it's comfy, though.
if I try to use a flat keyboard for too long I get severe wrist pain

@G.Moylan What's your keystrokes per minute?

@william porter Ye gods RAW is moronic.

@DavidCoffron idk. Probably better than I think but probably not terrific

@G.Moylan Oh my. I could not use that keyboard. My fingers cross over to often

7:02 PM
/shrug it be what happens

@DavidCoffron it forced me to type better, and as a result my speed has increased. I've been using this model for years though, so I'm quite used to it. I just order a new one every few years

@G.Moylan I do not like the home row system. I just can't get used to it

I like that it's pretty minimal and relatively small
IF they had a DVORAK version of this I'd buy one but I haven't seen one

I'm in the 75th percentile for speed and have no need to improve in my job, so Im good as I am xD

@G.Moylan I also really like the floating numpad

7:05 PM
@G.Moylan Same!! I think there's a problem with it now that you're having hte same issue.

@NautArch the last two I've used were fine, as I recall. I wonder if it's just a firmware thing for the latest round. Though I've had this one for almost 2 years now

@G.Moylan That is a nice touch, although as a high-portability consumer, it would be more of a hassle for me to have multiple pieces

@DavidCoffron yeah if I had to move my setup a lot I'd hate it
@NautArch Is yours paired with the mouse or is it separate?
@G.Moylan I have the mouse but it was purchased separately, so it's got its own receiver

That mouse loooks... interesting...

it's actually pretty comfy. I don't lay my thumb in the groove, I hold it more like a baseball

7:12 PM
@G.Moylan I can't imagin using something like that, but I said that about my current mouse too, so.... shrug

@DavidCoffron it took me a while to get used to. I tried it in an attempt to relieve some really bad wrist pain at the time and I've stuck with it since then. I use a Roccat Nyth at home, so not quite as ergo, but it's still a chunky mouse.

I need sleep... I've almost dozed off like 4 times. That's what happens when you try to keep up with SGDQ by watching the vods all night

GcL
@G.Moylan I have a wired one of those. Don't notice rollover issues with it though. Probably just the wireless being flakey? It's bluetooth, correct?

@G.Moylan sparate. have a logitech mouse.

@GcL no it has a dedicated USB receiver
@NautArch same for the keyboard. Interesting that we're both seeing the same issue

7:22 PM
@V2Blast I think my PHB is from before 2018 but I'll have to remember to doublecheck.

@G.Moylan I tried googling it, but nothing had come up
we're all suffering in silence
but i love the keyboard

same. I use the little bumper thing to lift it up and it's SO comfy
now I just need a proper chair. This one is starting to mess up my back
but I know I can't justify a real-deal-big-boy $800 office chair to my boss. I'm at a small company these days, no more Fortune 500

@G.Moylan comfortable seating is well worth it. I spent the money for Aerons for everyone at a desk.

@NautArch yeah I had versions of those at both of my previous job. Now I use one of those walmart office chairs
it's terrible. I have an Ikea Markus at home. It's not the best but it's better than this thing
my boss is cheap though. He won't splurge for monitors with adjustable height. Have to use books. Or an old Dell switch :P
so I imagine it will be tough to convince him I need an expensive chair

7:51 PM
@G.Moylan amazon sells some pretty cheap adjustable monitor stands. I generally get those because adjustable height monitors are $$$$
and an adjustable stand works just as well

8:02 PM
true

There are people who "will die on the hill of" the 3.5e "Rules Compendium" book not being an authoritative rules source.
It makes me sad, but then again we're in the stupid timeline anyway.

@DavidCoffron Same, the series bothers me too

8:20 PM
Somewhat tangent to an answer I just posted: has anyone ever interpreted the Long Casting Time rules "you must spend your action each turn casting the spell" to mean that the spellcaster is literally unable to do anything other than use their action, even if they decide they'd rather do something else?
Because while there's a few good rules reasons why that's probably not the correct interpretation, I can't find compelling evidence that it's a strictly invalid literal interpretation [of several valid interpretations].

I think i'd interpret that as if they want to continue casting, then they must use their action. Otherwise they lose the cast

@G.Moylan I mean, that's definitely where I'm at. But I've played (non-D&D) games before where casting a spell with a long cast time means being literally unable to stop, even if you realize half-way through that it's a bad idea.

@Xirema I don't think there's precedent for that in 5E, is there?

@G.Moylan Not that I'm aware of, but that goes both ways.

@G.Moylan Yeah... This annoyed me too.

8:23 PM
hmm. I guess I can't prove that that isn't a correct interpretation without spending more time than I have looking up spell phrasing

@G.Moylan The easy way to prove it is incorrect is to observe that the rules for Concentration allow a caster to end their Concentration at any time, no action required (PHB, pg. 203). So even if a spellcaster were compelled to continue casting, they could just end their Concentration at-will and no longer be compelled.

@Xirema oh there you go. nice!

So it doesn't make sense to have a rule that says "you are compelled to keep doing this" if there's such an easy loophole to get out of it.

indeed. Seems sound to me

But not making sense is not the same thing as not what the rules say. =P

Related to my question earlier about metagaming. Say one party member triggers a trap that teleports them into a dark room full of ghouls that paralyze on touch. They're utterly boned if they don't get out of there or get help. The rest of the party in-character has no way to know that's what happened, all they in-character know is that the ally disappeared in a flash of light. Is this an example of why metagaming can be very good for the table?

@EmrysTernal you've created a situation where metagaming is almost required in order to ensure that player's survival, though. If the rest of the party has no idea, you've written a death sentence for the trapped character

8:39 PM
I'm trying to assert that anyone that says that all metagaming is bad has flawed logic.

thanks

I think you'll find that anyone willing to make blanket statements that something is either all wrong or all right doesn't use much logic in the first place. Few things excepted.

@EmrysTernal Sounds to me like that wouldn't be a good table.

@EmrysTernal I"m not sure it totally matters. Party member disappeared -> go find him.
the actual threat isn't important. THey're already on the move to find them.

we meta-game all the time at our table. But mainly for fun, rather than teh-WIN!

Q: Are Valenar elves and Aereni elves different races of elves?

RorpI have been a GM of D&D eberron for around 2 years, and there is something that I always ask myself: Are Valenar elves and Aereni elves different races of elves in terms of gameplay? Q: Can I use Alchemist's fire to turn my sword into a virtual Flame Blade?

@HotRPGQuestions This would be considered an improvised weapon and deal 1d4+STR bludgeoning damage.

@Yuuki I envision it like a large butter knife with which to slather alchemists fire onto your opponent like hot pepper jelly on a cracker

10:15 PM
I find it interesting that you lose access to these two review queues when you cap your daily votes:

Ben
@Miniman Well, you've seen the Emperor haven't you? He is literally half machine at this point
@Yuuki I think that was probably half the reason why it was so funny :P

I get that the intent seems to be "hey go vote accordingly" but disabling the queue visibility is odd. They remove themselves from the dropdown, too:

Ben
I guess it's not that you lose access to these things... it just doesn't count towards your quota (i.e. badges). Cos you can still vote accordingly on these things, just not throught the shortcuts.
I wonder if it works the opposite way too.

@Ben you lose access to the queues. They're grayed-out and I can't click them

Ben
@G.Moylan Yeah, I mean that you can still go to individual posts and do the same things - vote, comment, VTC, etc.
I don't know whether or not they count toward your "review" counters though.
It would likely seem not.
Because I do VTC and edit and all that sort of stuff, but my counter is still only at 8. Lol
So my point is that this functionality is purely a management tool to ("restrict" is probably a bad word) your ability to contribute towards that badges associated with these review functions

10:27 PM
weird

Ben
It'd be interesting to know when that functionality became a thing. I could understand it if it was restricted because it was associated with badges.
Like, I used to play games on xbox for the cheev's. Didn't really matter whether or not I liked the game. I just wanted to get the 5-digit gamerscore

hang on what exactly is going on there
you do your daily 40 votes and it then for some reason disables the review queues?

Ben
Apparently
But only if you do this voting through the review queue tool, I think

Ben
10:48 PM
Yup. So I just looked at a Low Quality post. I had a counter of "2" that I have reviewed in the past. I opened the link to the question, and answer, flagged, and voted on it.
I then went back to the review queue, and I could not do anything with the post, as I had already voted/flagged etc. However, I still only have a counter of 2 Low Quality Posts reviewed.

11:33 PM
@EmrysTernal This is an example of why the GM should think through the consequences of traps, or else metagaming becomes necessary to salvage the situation.

@MarkWells yeah, I'd call that "really crappy dungeon design" myself
especially if due to party composition or whatnot, the party really would have had no countermeasure against such things (not all parties have a trapper in their ranks, after all)

Even if they have a trapper, they're not guaranteed to avoid every trap, else why put them in the dungeon at all? The only thing a trap like that can possibly do, if it goes off, is create a mess at the metagame level

@MarkWells that is true, I'm just mentioning an aggravating factor :)

Ben
Trapper: "I check for traps" [roll d20 - crits]
DM: "You find no traps"
Trapper: [Distrust intensifies]

It's not a good trap, but it can show that a level of metagaming can be ok, can keep the game moving:
**poof** the PC disapears.
1) He's probably just in a cell somewhere. We'll find him along the way (Dead PC)
2) He may be in danger (as we all know, OOC), lets try to find him quickly! Search everywhere! (Possibly-saved PC).
3) Draw my Sword of Undead Slaying, and open the 3rd door on the left! (Taking metagaming a bit too far)

Ben
11:49 PM
I had a polar opposite situation once. DH game, a warp event triggered and my PC just vanished. No one reacted.

Yeah, in Exalted we got so used to our Night-Caste not being detectable that when he got kidnapped, we all just went "Oh, he'll be around somewhere. He's always hiding, ready to pop out and save the day!"

Ben
"So, I'm not with the others anymore"
"Yup."
"Do *I* know where I am?"
"Nope"
"Do I even know what happened?"
"Not really. You're not even sure of what is happening around you... but this is clearly not a good place to be"
[Rest of the party continues with rounds of healing from the Psyker that just made me vanish]
Also, Heya @BlackSpike @Shavlenay

hiya :)

Ben
What's new?

the thing is, if you're thinking adversarially about what some veteran lich would do (vs. what's reasonable for PCs to go up against), you wind up in the land of "oh, every time the trap triggers, it creates a brand-new pocket-plane with a brand-new set of ghouls on it"

11:57 PM
Killing PCs is easy. -Nearly- killing PCs, and having them just survive, in an exciting touch-n-go situation is the tricky bit!

@BlackSpike yes!

Ben
My Gm did that consistently. It got old really fast :/
