I assume goodbabies 1-4 are assigned to goodguys1-4

as to the whereabouts of goodguys1-4, you'll have to take that up with the GoodBI

@williamporter This sounds like an Exalted scenario

@NautArch related to the Wild shape question
@NautArch though the title is confusing, that question appears to be about what happens when the druid goes out of wild shape, not what happens when they are in it. The question assumes that DB will work on a druid in WS. So I personally don't see the question being relevant answer-wise to this case at all. Am I missing something?
Less about trust and more that they've backed down from how 'official' or Rules-related it is. Out of curiosity, how does your reference not answer the question for you? Or does it, but you're just confirming :) — NautArch 22 mins ago

@Rubiksmoose Only that we've already established that a druid is a beast, and dominate beast works. In this case, the horncaller requires a beast, and the druid is a beast.
Perfectly fine to ask question with the same answer, but thought I'd ask them.

@NautArch Oh yeah, but that's not what the question you linked to actually asks (surprisingly)
Take a look at that answer, either I'm missing something huge or there's no possible way it could apply here.

@Rubiksmoose oh, snap. Yeah, it's making the (correct) assumption. This question is confiming that assumption.
i'll delete the comment.

6:24 PM
Yeah that title is definitely more than a little misleading.
And as a sidenote, dang this enemy would make a great counter to a WS druid. No save or anything.

@Rubiksmoose Either way, more DMs should definitely do more beast control with wild shaping druids :P muahahahahaah
@Rubiksmoose I'm not sure they really though Ravnica through.

I must say I haven't really read through it that much.
But this ability definitely seems out of the norm. No save effects are very rare. This would also cause a lot of problems for a BM ranger.

@Rubiksmoose I haven't either. I think someone who has it just joined the Chatizen dndbeyond so I've got access now. But between eberron and ravnica, both seem like UA.

For a heartless DM willing to do that to them lol

I think the feature assumes that the beast belongs to the Horncaller, and they're just essentially giving their beast companion an extra attack, a'la the Beast Conclave Ranger.

6:30 PM
@Xirema The not-fluff "Specialized shamans called horncallers use their magic to call wild beasts to fight alongside Selesnya troops. In quieter times, they tend the animals associated with Selesnya enclaves and parks."
Woe to wild shaped druid whom the shaman only sees as a wild beast.

Finally Moon Druids have a counter.

@Xirema What beats a 20th level moon druid? A dude with a horn.
I wonder if "a target the horncaller can see" can be the beast itself.
"stop hitting yourself, druid"

GcL
How many HP do the wild shapes in your games have? max? median? rolled?

@GcL I always use the average. Never rolled that is for sure.

6:45 PM
@GcL Depends on the wildshape. For anything equine, probably 1 HP.
3

@Yuuki XD

@Yuuki This is painfully accurate to the games I've played in.

Today has been quite busy.
Talk to Dr. about my MRI results.
- Degenerative Disc Disease, apparently.
Wife's eye protection thing falls out
- Rush her over to the eye doctor
Goodbaby5's grandparents call for me to come pick him up because Nonna has been retching.

:( Sounds like a rough Friday.

@Rubiksmoose Do you think the player rp help question can be system-agnostic?

6:51 PM
It's been a rough spring.
Though.... is today the first day of Summer?
Oh, so it is.

@NautArch Could it be? Maybe. Is it? It seems not given that discussion.

@Rubiksmoose I just odn't know enough about other systems to know if it generally applies or if the issue is 5e related

@NautArch Here's my thinking: OP is playing 5e. They have shown no inclination that they are dealing with or considering systems outside of that one. Thus, it makes the most sense to tag it with the system they are playing and asking about.
You can always answer in a SA way if you feel the system is irrelevant.

@Rubiksmoose what about in addition to? You may want to hop into that chat...but i also don't want to raise a ruckus. Maybe a meta? I dunno.

@NautArch I'd have to look at the metas again (we do have at least one on this subject), but IIRC generally we don't put SA and system tags together.

7:04 PM
@Rubiksmoose Thank you! I also didn't realize that the tag settings were to hide all questions of that tag. Which I guess makes sense now that I type that out.

Greetings fellow marshmallow truffles

@MikeQ hey! I am a truffled marshmallow, tyvm

@goodguy5 Great start to your summer :-/

7:26 PM
@Rubiksmoose - If you get a chance, you can tag the food/drink meta with [status completed]

::thumbs up::

@NautArch I'm here!

@V2Blast woohoo
one sec

whoops, took me too long to check what your message was (and my internet too long to work)

@V2Blast or someone else clicked on it

7:33 PM
it's possible it's full, too

> The maximum number of characters has been reached in this campaign. You cannot add a new character at this time.
the limit is 12, I think

one sec, mayb e i can move mine out
try again

I can only join by claiming Bludfont :P

hs@
ha!
hold on...
and go

Wait how do we have 12? Shouldn't the count be at 6 or so?

7:37 PM
@MikeQ I sent more invites out :D The campaign isn't 12 people, but access to dndbeyond does.
It's morel ike I created a camaign for it when I joined it and joined ToA. But then I realized that the campaign gives access to up to 12 people to dndbeyond. And figured I should share that access.
@V2Blast Need a new link?

refreshing works

i deactivated bludfont

joined :)

@V2Blast i think nearly all sourcebooks are active
no Acquisitions...yet

if anyone in the group has a Master Tier subscription, then my owned content (everything up to but not including Ghosts of Saltmarsh, I think) should be shared with everyone now :)

7:45 PM
@V2Blast I was thinking of getting it, but since I have absolutely no content on DnDB, I figured it was a bit of a waste.

I won the Legendary Bundle in a raffle during one of their dev streams
(before GoS came out, of course)

@V2Blast Doesn't look like the modules are avialable.

@V2Blast nice!

@V2Blast wait...they're starting to! ToYP works.

@Yuuki It took me the full hour to get this joke.

7:50 PM
@goodguy5 vroom vroom

@NautArch I get "Pay $25 now"

@JohnP really? it gave me access. No others did.
and nevermind
i've got access to teh table of contents
but got a 403 if i click on anything.

@NautArch SomeI get 403, some take me to the buy it page.

@NautArch Heh, I figured it'd take a little bit
logging out and logging back in might help

@V2Blast Newp.

7:56 PM
@V2Blast nope, no adventure access.

So is Blood Hunter the WotC attempt at a blood mage?

@JohnP It's one of homebrews from Critical Role. They have some other content on D&DB, like the Gunslinger fighter. None of it is WOTC official.

ah, that explains why I didn't see it at char creation. I did not have CR enabled.

Blood Hunter class and the Gunslinger fighter subclass are Matt Mercer homebrews, yes

@JohnP That's (arguably) for the best

7:59 PM
DDB has an advertising partnership with him/Critical Role

@MikeQ Was playing briefly at a table that had one. Was kind of underwhelming.

Hrm. Ya know, when a published author gives you license to reproduce elements of his books for a setting (non commercial), you really should finish it.

@JohnP Hmm?

@NautArch CR is entertaining, but I don't think their homebrew mechanics are well-designed. Too pathfindery. Blood hunter has the same weakness as PF's kineticist, where it has to expend HP to use its class features.
And IIRC, the blood hunter on their show got killed by that class feature

@JohnP So what's the concept of a blood mage?
Summoning blood orphans?
(what are blood orphans?)

8:08 PM
@V2Blast Michael Stackpole gave me permission (Played indoor soccer for a season with him as a sub on his team) to use one of his books as a setting - Hence this question. Note the date :(
As evidenced by the warbow question, I have a lot of good ideas with no idea how to implement them correctly.

@JohnP If only I knew who that was.
And now I need to fix my answer for the warbow question

@JohnP I've been getting deep into the Riftwars series and was doing some reading on the author. Apparently a good chunk of lore came from an old RPG campaign module that he'd played a lot of but then he expanded it.

@Yuuki It's blood that doesn't have a corresponding pointer in your filesystem, so it can't be accessed by the OS

@NautArch Yep. There was also a computer based rpg that got novelized later.
@NautArch I got into the riftwar series until late in the game when

@JohnP I only got into it this year. I'm almost done with the 2nd book of Serpent Wars.

8:13 PM
I never remember how do to that in chat...

So many other later books seem to pull from his.

@NautArch Yeah, it's still good there. Have you read all the side books as well?

At first I thought he was taking stuff from others, but then I saw his publish dates :)

@NautArch I also really really like his standalone novel Faerie Tale, one of his very first books. I reread that about every 3-4 years.

ohno, I may have missed a series. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Riftwar_Cycle
I didn't read The Empire Trilogy yet
Did Riftwar saga and then Krondor's sons

8:16 PM
Empire trilogy isn't really part of the series, even though it's set in the same universe.
I lost interest somewhere in the Demonwar I think. I don't remember reading the 2nd one.

@JohnP Ooh, it's a kelewan-based series. Maybe i'll read that one after serpent saga

Serpent, That the one with the blacksmith and the rat faced merchant?

@JohnP yeah, but not a merchant (yet)

Been awhile since I've read that series.

roo and Erik

8:20 PM
oops.

no, it's clearly going there
no oops needed

@JohnP Re: the warbow, how can a 1st level character meet its prerequisites?
4 skill ranks in 2 skills, multiple feats, etc

@MikeQ Dangit. I need to revise that, that's left over from the first iteration where the ability would be available, but not unlock until you had X feat. I need to add that into the description.

What happens if a character wields it without meeting the feats? Is there some penalty, or do they treat it as just a normal bow?

The far shot was the prereq for the distance. And yes, so if you don't have the prereqs for the planar shift, then that element doesn't function.l

8:27 PM
Having it automatically scale with the wielder's level, and have an order of packaged benefits, is what's really making it difficult to implement
As the designer, you're basically forcing yourself to balance a progression of class features, without knowing necessarily what existing features and powers the PC would have
I'd suggest scrapping the sequential progression, and instead giving it independent conditional benefits

Hot take: Progression is for your characters not their items.

Yep. I wouldn't recommend "locking in" a player character to a specific item

That reminds me of Magic Swords.

8:43 PM
TBF, I'm fine with the enchantments and enhancement bonus of the item scaling. It's the abilities I take qualms with.

@MikeQ There are definitely players who want that sort of thing and that's fine.
But those kind of players also tend to prefer having personalized progression for their weapons.

Just because you'd either switch to a better bow every couple levels, or pay to get it enchanted more

I can see the appeal of sticking with the same weapon for an entire campaign. There's flavor there and narrative potential there.
But if I want progression with that weapon so I can keep using it rather having it as a vanity piece, I want something that makes sense with my character's narrative arc and something that ties into the campaign.

Right. And having a predetermined "schedule" of upgrades is... unusual, at least. Would definitely be campaign-specific.

I'm reminded of 4e's artifacts.

8:47 PM
Points out that abilities gained at higher character levels from class levels for a build is just scheduled abilities

@williamporter Yes, and for most classes, they're generic enough that they're not campaign specific

And so is the enhancement bonus of the weapon and it's enchantments

Well, isn't homebrewing abilities tied to narrative progression basically how FATE works?
Or was that a different system?
Roll For Shoes?

Both qualify, in a very general sense.

8:50 PM
Roll for shoes isn't really abilities tied to narrative progression per se
Though they are abilities that are a result of the narrative for sure

I'd be inclined to take a cue from Fate and detatch weapon features from gold costs, instead treating them as feature slots that unlock as you level up.

Personally I like being able to wield the same weapon for a whole campaign because if I start the game wielding my grandfather's greatsword, it's kind of annoying how the game otherwise assumes you've traded it out for a better weapon by x level if you haven't upgraded it.

Then each weapon gives access to unique features, but picking up a different weapon doesn't result in having fewer features--just different ones?

@williamporter That's fair, and I can get on board with the scaling enhancement bonuses; the weapon gets better at being a weapon. But it's the other features that just seem out of place.

(In 4e, upgrading a weapon to a new numerical bonus cost the difference between the weapon's current bonus and the target bonus, and required somebody with the generic ritual. It was quite simple to keep your weapon, but was still tied to the gold progression. You only had to get a new weapon if you wanted a new ability, and even then you could swap an enchantment from a new weapon to an old one.)

8:55 PM
@MikeQ Yup, I agree on that

3.5e had something that you could attach to weapons to give them abilities.

@BESW It's like that in PF too somewhat, you find a crafter and pay the difference in price for them to upgrade it.

Go the Monster Hunter route and get a blacksmith to improve your weapons with monster parts.

@williamporter If the GM and in-game pacing allows it, yes

How does giant pufferfish spit make a weapon do more damage and crit more often? I don't know but it works!

8:57 PM
Then there's artifacts, which have attunement tracks that increase or decrease depending on if you're doing stuff they like or hate. And the more they like you, the more features you unlock.

@Yuuki This is something I want to implement in my future games. Make the weapon upgrades more interesting and thoughtful than just "pay gold, get bigger number"

It's why I like SkeleABP in PF
Because I can actually get items that aren't the big 6
and be relevant

I wouldn't mind some MH-esque mechanics. You want to upgrade your weapon? You gotta research a monster with qualities that you want and then figure out how to track one down.

@williamporter @MikeQ - This was definitely character/campaign specific as an original concept.

@Yuuki TBF, that sounds more like a way for a GM to screw a player over.

9:00 PM
Alternately, you can remove weapon numerical scaling entirely and have it be a function of the character level, like in some Dark Sun variants.

@williamporter How so? It seems memorable and not just a matter of math

"You wanted to get a poisonous weapon, oh you have to go over to this new continent that you won't be able to handle for a few more levels"

You pick a weapon for the unique features it grants, or its synergy with your feats and class features, because your numerical modifiers are your own.

@williamporter Well yeah, but that's just bad GMing

@williamporter To be fair, any mechanic is a way for a GM to screw a player over.

9:01 PM
@BESW "Add your proficiency bonus to damage"
is the short version of that

"You want to hit this enemy, oh you have to roll this high to do it and you can't roll that high yet."

I can see it working with the right group, but I would only join if I knew the people. If it was in an advertisement or in the houserules of a game I was looking to join, I'd just pass on by.

Well yeah if the DM's gonna be a jerk about it, sure
Offering a house rule that provides a new option, and then saying "Oh you actually want to do that? Too bad, it's impossible." That's a fault of the DM, not the rule.

Maybe I'm just jaded from all the games I joined because it sounded interesting, but then went bad real fast.

I'd probably do it how Monster Hunter does. There's a few basic weapons available from the shop, even elemental ones are available once you get further enough in the progression, but the best weapons are all the ones you craft from monster parts.

9:04 PM
I could dig that

But then again, the entire game runs off of this system.
It's the core gameplay, whereas that wouldn't be the case for D&D.

Why not?

Because that would be a massive overhaul of the magic item system for D&D/PF

You could definitely make that the setting if you want.

Ah, I should've clarified - Why woudn't that be feasible in 5E?

9:07 PM
It's possible (I know a guy who converted Ars Magica into PF), it's just a massive undertaking

"The GM requires onerous narrative tasks before allowing you to use your levelled-up features" has been an official variant since at least the 3.0 DMG.
Like, straight up, the 3.0 DMG says that the GM can choose to require you to pay an NPC and spend weeks of downtime before you get the benefits of a new level.
At least going to a new continent and fighting a monster is interesting.

@BESW Yep, this is one of my gripes with 3.X/PF. Most discussions of acquiring better gear is just a matter of calculating the time and gp required. Tedious.

I mean... that's the core D&D model. Grind to be better at grinding, and hope a story happens along the way.

I remember the awe and joy in a friend when he realized that with Fate you don't have to pad out six months of leveling-up story before your party has enough XP to start the story you want to tell, you can just start them there.

9:16 PM
Kill the monsters, steal the treasure, stab your buddies.
I need to find a group to play a game of fate with one of these days
I'm just too used to playing PF at this point, I just mindlessly keep moving forward.

Same here. I have a few Fate modules but no players. And since I haven't actually run Fate before, I'd like to have at least one person with prior experience.

I guess my real issue is my lack of time during which I can play it
Between full time work and 16 units at Uni, I'm pretty burnt out

I will probably actually have time/energy to run a short Fate game or two for people next month.

Definitely nothing to do with the 3 games of PF and the 4 PBP I have going at all
Sigh, I guess I should get back to work

@BESW That's good to hear. I've been trying to coordinate a Fate one-shot in the back room, for weekends when we don't have D&D scheduled

9:22 PM
Libre Baskerville Jam, a game jam about designing a game from the Outside rather than the Inside.
@MikeQ I'm gonna be alone in my own home for three weeks for the first time in nearly ten years, so I'm either going to have a lot of energy and flexible social time, or a lot of emotions and no social capacity.
Right now I've got a semi-weekly cozy game that's very rejuvenating.

@BESW heh, those are certainly some extremes :)

@BESW Is this based on that (supposed?) Cherokee parable

Yeah.
(The Christian preacher Billy Graham claims to have invented it, and also the attribution to any number of different Native peoples--he changed it up over many decades. It's based on Biblical concepts of internal struggle, not Native ones.)

> Inside of me are two wolves. One is an idiot. The other one is an idiot. I am an idiot.

9:35 PM
I'm rather fond of this one.

I'm on my way out and can't help (or even really see if help is needed) but if people think they can contribute:

D&D Beyond has an "Essentials" page, ostensibly tying in with the impending release of the D&D Essentials Kit - which comes with a free code for the DDB version of the adventure, a 50% off code for the PHB, and supplementary content on DDB. The Continue the Adventure page has summaries of what those supplementary adventures are about.

@BESW Check the details of that policy, in case it forbids specific pets. It seems mammals, birds, reptiles, and other large critters are strictly regulated in your area, but google says there are places that sell fish and inverts
