@HotRPGQuestions I guess we haven't got a (clean) way to say duplicate of a question addressed in Sage Advice...

I initially agreed with the call to put the question on hold, but with the edits, I think the question qualifies for Good Subjective. Needs to be closely monitored though.

At the very least, I think the new question is a vast imrpovement on the old one.
Man, the stack is hopping today.

6:21 PM
Inspired by that Pact of the Blade question (not directly related): The game does not blink if you give a maul the finesse property.

What do you mean?

Combining heavy, two-handed and finesse on a single weapon gives no inconsistencies or contradictions in the rules

The Maul's damage dice should be 3d4, CMV.

@Someone_Evil but mauls aren't finesse in 5e?

Also the Greatclub should be 2d4. You can try to disprove me, but you can't, because deep down, you know I'm right.

6:25 PM
@Xirema That would make the GWF Fighting style a spot to good with mauls...

@Someone_Evil ....... Spins up Probability Calculator....

@Xirema gains .5 per die
@Rubiksmoose Neither do longswords until a moonblade gains/adds it
3d4 with GWF would have a mean of 9 dmg

@Someone_Evil I guess I'm just confused then what you were trying to say lol. I thought you were saying "the game already allows mauls to be versatile so the battleaxe thing would probably be cool too."

@NautArch fyi, done

@Someone_Evil Okay, yeah, you're correct. Worth noting though that GWF on 2d6 adds .66666 per die. It's a larger bonus overall on 3d4 (7.5→9.0) compared to 2d6 (7.0→8.333). 1d12 for reference (6.5→7.333 for .8333 per die)
I dunno, the difference between the 3d4 maul and the 2d6 greatsword is less than the difference between the 2d6 greatsword and the 1d12 greataxe.
So maybe it's not gamebreaking?
Although it makes optimizing Barbarian DPR harder. ;)

6:35 PM
It makes greatsword slightly pointless; mauls have better avg damage unless you have features that uses the weapon die type (Savage Critical etc.) in which case greataxe better

@Someone_Evil Almost. It creates extra breakpoints in a Barbarian's progression. They'd start out with Maul being the best, then Greatsword would become the best, then Greataxe would become the best.

How does greatsword end up as the best?

@Someone_Evil When you're a mid-level Barbarian and have one or two stacks of Savage Critical but not all 3. (About to run the exact numbers on it...)

It's premier week for #AvengersEndgame, and the only other time I've felt this way is at the end of an epic @Wizards_DnD campaign. Q: Does using the inspiration rules for character defects tend to encourage players to display MGS?

WyrmwoodThe rules on Inspiration, from the Basic Rules state Typically, DMs award it when you play out your personality traits, give in to the drawbacks presented by a flaw or bond, and otherwise portray your character in a compelling way. If you choose unwisely, giving into drawbacks this could p...

^there you go @goodguy5 :)

7:13 PM
:thumbs_up:

7:23 PM
@Someone_Evil Okay, it turns out I was mistaken: the Greataxe surpasses the (3d4) Maul at brutal dice 3+, but the Greatsword never surpasses the Maul, even if you're a Half-Orc gaining effective Brutal 4. It gets really close, but doesn't ever quite get there.

@Xirema I think a 3d4-big hammer thing is a sweet idea as an 'exotic weapon' or some similar though

@Someone_Evil Yeah, that's where I'm leaning now.

The only downside is having more 'carpet caltrops'...

Q: How much damage does a creature take for spending its entire turn inside a Wall of Fire?

Ryan ThompsonThe conditions for when wall of fire deals damage, after the initial casting, are as follows (emphasis mine): One side of the wall, selected by you when you cast this spell, deals 5d8 fire damage to each creature that ends its turn within 10 feet of that side or inside the wall. A creature ta...

Ok this is ridiculous, how did I not realize this spell was written so confusingly?
Out of curiosity, how do people here run/interpret it?

@Rubiksmoose We play on a grid; Wall of Fire crates an obscuration along gridlines (the wall itself) and damages a 10ft area on a designated side of it. This leaves the spell plenty powerful for a 4th level

7:40 PM
@Someone_Evil what about inside the wall?

@Rubiksmoose Creatures snap to squares on the grid; the wall snaps to the grid lines. The thickness of the wall is not enough to affect any squares (less than half)

@Someone_Evil oh so you would ignore the part of the spell talking about being inside of it then?

It falls away in the abstraction/gameification. The walls volume is not anywhere where you could occupy beyond passing through

this invisilines are making my teeth hurt :(

@Someone_Evil well that is one way to get rid of the issue in the question lol
@goodguy5 :'(

7:52 PM
@Rubiksmoose I can't tell if it's the aligners themselves, or if it's the fact that I'm pretty sure I'm clenching my teeth. from having something in my mouth

*invisalign?
but yeah, that sounds annoying

@goodguy5 oof. And it could be both. And mouth pain really sucks
Invisalignment: lawful painful.

@V2Blast I have a different brand anyway, technically Clear Correct

ah

I feel like "invisalign" is going to be a generalized brand name, like BandAid
(moose, your joke was good, don't worry.)

7:58 PM
I'm happy you appreciated it lol :) I had to think way too long about what alignment to make it though...

I got up close to a guy who had just been reloading his gun hand cannon, and he missed me. Of course I narrated bashing his firing arm away with my shield.

Q: Does the Pact of the Blade warlock feature allow me to customize the properties of the pact weapon I create?

Timothy AloiI am making a Pact of the Blade warlock/Assassin rogue. I have the Improved Pact Weapon eldritch invocation, so I can make a longbow pact weapon while at range and a melee pact weapon when not. When I create a pact weapon, can I give it different weapon properties? Or do they stay the same as th...

"Inside the box you’ll find five pre-generated characters, one each for the five members of the party as described in Stranger Things Season 2. Fans can step into the shoes of Mike’s paladin, Will’s cleric, Lucas’ ranger, Dustin’s bard, and Eleven’s wizard. Best of all, these are all level-three characters, with plenty of bells and whistles from the 5th edition of D&D.

The real treasure here is the adventure itself, based on the one the gang played briefly during Season 1, called Hunt for the

@V2Blast Encountering the Demogorgon at 3rd level? Yeesh.

What is the most interesting or strangest thing you have researched and learned about for a D&D game?
