First livestreamed video episode of our actual-play podcast that I'm a player in (previously in audio form only on Soundcloud/iTunes/Google Play) is on YouTube now. It's mostly a story recap of everything that happened in the story up to this point, and some setup for the next arc. Come check us out!

Also on Soundcloud here, if you prefer audio-only:

1 hour later…
Ben
1:40 AM
Went back and played Chrono Trigger again recently :D
Always a great game

2:03 AM
Never played it

Ben
It is well worth it.

hey there @nitsua60

Ben
It's available on Steam, so go download it! Haha

@Ben it's on my list of games to look at for sure

Ben
I bought a snes mini when they came out (and I was lucky to even get one!) But I was devastated to find out that it didn't have chrono trigger on there. so I had to mod the console to allow for rom ports

2:19 AM
I've just got such a long list of games, and I have less free time for JRPGs than I used to, even classics I hear are great from practically everyone who ever talks about them
I get interrupted at pretty random times and not being able to either immediately save or quickly make back major progress is pretty good reason for me to put certain games at the bottom of the list
But maybe next time I'm specifically looking for something like that Chrono trigger will be it

Ben
@trogdor Fortunately Chrono Trigger is one of those games that allows for open world saves, and pausing at any given time :)

Well I assumed the pausing thing
But I don't like leaving something paused for say, a whole hour on my laptop

Ben
Haha yeah that's fair

And open world saving doesn't help in the middle of a dungeon
I've had that issue before in Breath of Fire 3
It's not usually an issue but I have lost a lot of time on occasion

Ben
Does BoF have save points in the dungeons?

2:34 AM
Yeah
But you gotta get to them

Ben
Yeah fair enough

If I gotta walk away from the computer right now it doesn't help even if I know there is a save point two minutes away
And I mean, it's really not apocalyptic or anything, I just get annoyed when circumstances cause me to leave a game open when I'm not actually on the computer
It's not like I'm swearing off games that don't let you save all progress at any time but it's a consideration whenever I pick which game I'm getting next
Though I do question why there are still any games out there with a save feature that doesn't work at all times

@trogdor For older games like Chrono Trigger, it wasn't possible. And even for some newer games, it's more difficult to allow saving everywhere.

Not that Chrono Trigger is at fault for that, it's not like it was made this year XD
@Miniman yeah older games get a pass
I understand that

Then there's games like Mass Effect Andromeda, where they built a save function that can work at any time, but disabled it at certain times because they were determined to make a terrible game.

2:47 AM
@Miniman as for newer games, if it's difficult ok, but sometimes I feel like it's specifically because they are going for an old school feel when that's actually a detriment
@Miniman lol

It's especially ironic when most of their terrible design decisions stemmed from a desire to "be open world", but saving anywhere is the norm in open world games.

I'm not entirely sure where the line Is drawn, but for every game where they had to build the save system so you could only save in some places, there must be another one that you could have just opened a menu screen and saved if they decided to let you
But maybe that's just me
Anyway I don't wanna blow it out of proportion, it's just the main concern I have for picking up the game like right now
I fully expect to get it at some point and have a blast with it
I've heard almost exclusively good things about it

3:31 AM
hey there @user10882308, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

3 hours later…
6:12 AM
There are a few game design justifications for designated save points
In open world games I mean...
My little brother was once REALLY irate about losing his Morrowind character after unwittingly saving after being lethally poisoned.
Save points are a good way to prevent that, although not the only one. You could also have an autosave whenever you enter a new area
But there's also appeal in preventing save scumming as a strategy

6:30 AM
And then there's game design to mitigate the problems with different kinds of saves, rather than being trapped in just choosing between save options.

Yeah, saving doesn't exist in a vacuum
So few things do :)

@kviiri fair, I once got stuck on a halo autosave where the plasma bullets that were going to kill me had already been fired
I actually got out of it eventually but I probably should have just redone the stage
I think I died like 50 times in rapid succession before I figured out exactly how to dodge just enough to live and run away from that

Doom is an interesting early-ish example of free saving anywhere, in that it also has a rather punishing death condition that only exists as something like a challenge mode (you lose all your guns and ammo save for the pistol you started with)

I can definitely see the argument for needing to restrict saving
even if it still annoys me a bit

I think the general harshness of Doom maps as the game progressed reflects the assumption that the player is loaded with good gear, which suggests that the choice of saving system influenced their map design

6:38 AM
mm
that is interesting

And then there's games like SotC, where exploration is a major form of progress and so saving is a location-binding feature.

that's honestly more acceptable
but also that game is a bit old now anyway and already has a pass

6:58 AM
In theory, save state systems are implemented in a way that contributes to the desired gameplay experience
e.g. If you want your game to feel punishing by making the player redo areas when they fail, then you design a save state system that (mostly) doesn't let the player save and reload

In practice, games are designed and released on such a tight schedule, with such profit-maximizing priorities, that ground-level states like save mechanics tend to be copy-pasted from previous properties in favor of flashy effects that will look good in the marketing material.

Or the save system is buggy and can be exploited for shenanigans

@MikeQ In older games in particular, I think the technical challenge of candidate systems played a big part too
This isn't just a pedantic point: it means the save system is often in place before the bulk of the map design is finalized

> Save scum. When you compel nameless antagonists to re-think their life choices, it costs them two fate points to resist.

So there is ample room for the save system to influence the challenge of the level design, not just the other way around.

7:14 AM
@BESW who you calling scum? :P

@BESW I see what you did there

Yeah, you always start your design with your constraints.

But yeah, games that allow for rapid-fire quickloading can generally get away with rather punishing challenges because the player can quickly abandon bad attempts and get straight back to action

True. On the other hand, making it too punishing just gets annoying/boring/repetitive, because then you're stuck at the same challenge for ages
I don't know what the context of this conversation is
scrolling up says Chrono Trigger/JRPGs/saving practices

Yeah, it started with talking about how save-game features influence which games we play based on how our real-life circumstances make them easier or harder.

7:46 AM
yeah
that is definitely how it started

I can confirm save point starvation made CT at least tricky for me once

yeah I compared it loosely to BoF3
I haven't played CF but I assume I am at least correct in assuming it's save practice is similar
IE you have to get to a spot that allows you to save
and also you can do so on the world map (but that doesn't help in the middle of dungeons)

Yeah, and it's a bigger problem than it might seem like at first
On the surface, it's just "you might have to play longer than you wanted so you don't lose progress"
But another effect is "you never know how long you need to play to not lose progress" which can be really frustrating and make one averse to playing when they're not very sure they have enough time.
Stuff like that ripples

8:08 AM
yeah
I've been playing more games lately that have really short levels and such
things that mitigate the need to save
and just as an example of a typical day for me, it's been two hours away from work and I have been interrupted 4 times
I realize for some people that isn't a big deal but for me it definitely is
and no none of them were just "oh someone wants to talk to me for a couple minutes or less"
which for me would still be a little annoying but wtv
so anyway, I speak from a place of repeated personal frustration on the subject

8:26 AM
yuh

so when I said earlier that I don't know why more games aren't letting you save whenever, it was definitely largely influenced by that
not by an actual understanding of just how creating a game (fitting the process of making a save system of some kind in as a major factor) works

Mine is largely guesstimates too :P
I have no formal education in gamics, but... well, tons of experience playing and discussing them. I might be overlooking a lot of subtleties

well I think we still get to complain about it
if it causes problems for us XD

@trogdor Of course!

lol

8:40 AM
And I think the complaints we have are fair :)

yeah

I think a smoother gameplay where after clearly making a mistake you can still go on and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and it's still fun to start over if you fail in the end (like an Assault mission in Unreal Tournament!) is better than a gameplay which is so unforgiving that it requires saving and loading within a given section.

I mean, I definitely don't like the idea of a game that is designed assuming you will save scum
that definitely takes some of the fun out of it

My personal favorite scheme is fair challenge with permadeath, when it fits the game well. I requires rather particular style of gameplay to work well though.

I don't like permadeath anything all that much
except for like, roguelites

8:54 AM
Hmm. Ziggurat.

because in those at least you probably still unlocked something
and the whole point is to either get through in one go or unlock something for future runs
or both
but right now that takes too much time

9:07 AM
> Shave scum. You get +2 when plying your trade as a barber in Mos Eisley.

9:27 AM
Why so narrow?

9:47 AM
eh because they can't all be winners

I think permadeath works in Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, for instance. One feels at risk for death but the game doesn't take forever to get back to speed if you die.
In Angband, it's worse because the game is intensely grindy so you wind up investing lots of time in your character

10:05 AM
I also play some Don't Starve sometimes,.. in that you can save any time but once you die you die
so a little of everything there I guess

Yeah, it's fairly typical
Hitman series is unusual: you can save any time during a mission, but only a limited number of times depending on your difficulty settings. That actually works reasonably well given the nature of the levels
Quite often a mission in the Hitman games I've played are 95% observation of the surroundings for openings, and 5% of actual action. So you can complete most questions fairly quickly if you apply stuff you learned on the previous attempts.

10:33 AM
I have actually watched a bit of Hitman
I would have picked it up too but it's a little expensive and the demo for it did nooooot run well on my laptop

I haven't played the newer ones

oh it's an older one?
are there 3 or 4 different Hitman games?

Blood Money was quite excellent, although I concede those save slots were largely important because it wasn't always obvious what would cause the guards to go full aggro.
@trogdor I think the main series is something like six games

wow
more than I expected at all

I've played Hitman 2 (Silent Assassin), Contracts and Blood Money. Absolution and the one I think is just "Hitman" are the "newer ones" I meant x)

10:37 AM
I have only seen anything from the latest two
ugh those names

I love the pun potential though

why can't they just put actual numbers for which one in order it is?
do the older games generally work the same way?

47 is Silent as a sin, if he's too large to fit into a secret opening he contracts, and if his other muscles fail him, he comes up with an ab solution.
@trogdor Haha, I honestly don't know because I haven't really even looked into the newer ones... the basic idea is that you just need to kill a target and leave alive, although Blood Money gives you a varying paycheck for upgrades between levels. More money for cleaner hits :)

"hello pun police? please get him"
@kviiri ah ok,... that is a little different then

Blood Money greatly expanded the possibility to kill people in unorthodox ways though. You can make deaths seem like accidents, eg. pushing someone down a staircase or rigging their barbecue to explode.

10:41 AM
ah ok
it seems like it works mostly the same but they have added more stuff in the newer games

Seems like a natural course of evolution

the gameplay itself is probably a little more polished too

Blood Money had some other objectives too, but they tended to be minor
Yeah. The earlier Hitman games are very... annoying to get started with.

@kviiri in the newer games they have like, extra sort of side quests which are special ways to kill each target
probably the evolution of that

@trogdor Blood Money has them too, but they're strictly optional

10:43 AM
same then

And there's no real bonus in using them, apart from the fact that collateral damage is not penalized if it's from an "accident"
My pet peeve in earlier Hitman games: a common obstacle in the game is guards that frisk 47 for guns. Until Blood Money, they actually attacked 47 straight away if they found anything. And there's no way to know for sure which guards are going to frisk you. And they also attack you if you decline frisking by turning away.

ah well the newer games give you more points for killing targets in new ways
including the sidequest-ey ways

It took them three whole games to figure out that that kind of trial and error is frustrating

but it seems like most of the unlocks are cosmetic

In Blood Money, there's some little sidequests like "leave mission with this guy's briefcase for extra money"

10:45 AM
@kviiri oh wow yeah that is kinda dumb

@trogdor Yep! But Blood Money fixed that :)
That's the upside... they learned from their mistakes

the newer games show an icon on items that are illegal when you look at them, and frisking is only necessary if you actually walk into the place the guards are,... guarding
and also if you have a briefcase you could just throw it over a wall with all your items and get them back anyway
as long as no one sees it, or if you get it back really fast even if someone does
it seems like 80% of the frisking areas are kinda useless if you know you can do that
anyway, I like stealth action games so it seemed like it would be right up my alley, but I don't really want to play the older games
so maybe at some indeterminate point in the future I will have a better computer for playing high performance games like that
and it will probably be cheaper by then too
XD

Blood Money also has a weird thing with remote controlled mines

remote detonated or remote moveable?
because there are definitely remote detonated mines in the newer ones
but they seem,.... not that great
you sort of have to set them up really well or they just get everyone to see that you just blew someone up

@trogdor The remote detonated... the weirdness is, if a NPC sees one in 47's hand, they panic instantly. Despite it looking like a gray smoke detector :P

10:53 AM
maybe it's just the people I watched play it but they seem to get you caught or at least lose you full stealth when you use em

When it's dropped no one cares though

@kviiri ah ok, so in the newer games you get a bit of a warning for all the items that make people panic

@trogdor If you like stealth games, I think Blood Money is passable once you get a hang of it but I have one really big recommendation: Invisible Inc. It's from Klei (the authors of Don't Starve)

that includes the mines and all the guns, unless you are disguised as a guard or someone allowed to carry weapons
@kviiri I have had my eye on that too actually

It's a well-designed turn-based sneaky fest. Actually rewards bypassing guards without incapacitating or killing everyone :)

10:56 AM
that warning gives you around 2 or 3 seconds, possibly longer, before they actually notice you are carrying something you shouldn't be

@trogdor That sounds nice

@kviiri it looks pretty cool yeah
@kviiri yeah, so basically you can duck around a corner or run past and behind people
it seems like the newer games are a little more forgiving overall
probably

When I was in my early teens I liked this game series called Commandos where you command a group of WWII Allied commandos against the Nazi Reich. It's a stealth action game, but from a RTS-like perspective. Your guys have different specializations and you'd usually need them all to beat the missions.
But it had problems... the missions were usually VERY tailored to exactly fit the resources at hand. Not enough room for creativity.
And it required lots of mouse acrobatics, doing actions quick
Invisible Inc feels a bit like taking what I loved from Commandos and turning that into a roguelike-ish turn-based game

I do like turn based stuff
it's just that I don't think I will get the same thrill from stealth as,... a turn based game
it's got two elements I like but I don't know if I like them together like that
most if not all the stealth based games or games with stealth elements I have played have been real time
usually first person
or third person
maybe even more third person than first
like Halo during the parts where you can sneak, or Deus Ex Human Revolution
or the Sly Cooper games that were out when I was a kid

12:01 PM
Sly Cooper games looked real nice
I never had any of them though

the ones I played were fun
I have seen some of the newer ones and I feel like they went too far with some of the story at the least
no idea if the gameplay also suffers or if it holds up well

1 hour later…
1:15 PM
Does anyone know how what the Harry Potter spell ‘diffindo’ would Be in ASR’s Magica?

1:51 PM
That's a fine question, but as I am not ASR literate, I am of no use to you. Hopefully someone literate in that game will arrive soon.

2:29 PM
/me googles what diffindo does

it slices, it dices, it severs, it chops!

Oh
Oh yeah
@G.Moylan What's up?

2:44 PM
o/ how goes it?

Pretty good here, I think I'm going to run Lady Blackbird to my friends at some point

@Piomicron If you mean Ars Magica, you're welcome to ask that as a mainsite question. Best to show your work and show where you're stuck figuring it out.

Since we've been on a bit of a dry spell and I don't really want to spend time working on a DnD game...

Note we have , , and , and if you're playing with 4th or 5th edition you'll want to tag the main tag plus the edition tag.
(which is different to how we handle D&D question tagging, but that handling is specific to D&D)

@kviiri I had never heard of it until just now but reading about it it sounds cool

2:52 PM
@G.Moylan Yeah! I've never played it either but it seems right up my alley :)

Reminds me a bit of Firefly
at least I get that vibe from it

I'm still confused by the tagging rules. E.g. some games forcibly synonymise to the short form, others enforce the long form, and that doesn't seem to line up to the game's official name (e.g. GURPS is not spelled out in formal naming, but many short-tag games are).

@vicky_molokh I think the guiding directive as far as creating new tags is clarity. We want what the tag represents to be clear.

We have a tag length limit which is at 35 characters. "generic-universal-roleplaying-system" is 41 characters long, 44 when we add "-4e" on the end.

However brevity is another thing we try to achieve. Spelling out Gurps would be incredibly long and nobody is going to be confused about what GURPS refers to assuming they know the system.

3:04 PM
We also pick what people would be looking for. Nobody types "generic universal roleplaying system" into google or search, they type GURPS, so we use GURPS.
Same is why we use [dnd-#e] even though we could fit the spelled-out name.

But IIRC there's some game that people tend to type in full but has a short tag . . . Warhammer Fantasy probably?
I don't remember which ones, but I think it was one of those like that.
Conversely, people talk about DSA but it's spelled out.

Warhammer Fantasy could also refer to a number of games. WHFB is usually used to refer to the tabletop wargame with minis, but Warhammer Fantasy is the TTRPG.

@doppelgreener In this case, there's always tag synonyms.

also WH40k or just 40k, and WHAoS are other Warhammer tabletop war games

@G.Moylan Yeah, it's got some similarities for sure
I've actually been meaning to hack some Firefly stuff onto Apocalypse World...

3:10 PM
Whoops, didn't scroll up.
Hmm... not sure if tag synonyms work with SEO.
I think they do.

@vicky_molokh Heh, this is something I've never thought about but yeah, kinda funny! I guess the people who set the precedent have the most weight here...

@vicky_molokh WFRP got its short name kept for the same reasons as D&D: rpg.meta.stackexchange.com/a/7394/1204
@vicky_molokh Right, because it's known by both its English and Foreign name. We've also got as a tag synonym pointed to it.
@G.Moylan And yeah Warhammer Fantasy is a lot of things, though the tag [warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-#e] could still fit.

@vicky_molokh can you help me understand your question. I don't understand how it isn't just asking for opinions.

3:26 PM
@Rubiksmoose I could think of a way to make it a question with a better qualifier.

@Rubiksmoose
Asking about opinions: "Do you think we should pass a law that forbids eating pancakes with a shovel?"
Asking about facts: "Is banning eating of pancakes with a shovel a common enough sentiment that a politician could win an election by promising it, and what goals do those pro-ban people pursue with such a law?"

@Rubiksmoose Most of the questions here are asking for opinions, this one is doing so without criteria for good opinions.

In my case it's a bit more complicated than the above reductionist example.

@vicky_molokh You have multiple questions there. It's unclear what you're asking.

In the chat example or in the actual Q&A thread on the main site?

3:28 PM
@vicky_molokh The chat thread

I'm afraid that if I condense the two sections of the fact-example in the chat, I'll need to provide more goals in the example, making it harder to parse as an example.
But I'll try to rephrase it.

@vicky_molokh This question rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/140494/…, doesn't seem to fit the stack very well. It's "let's discuss why players are pro-chance of death in games"

@vicky_molokh Sure, but I don't think you are asking what you want to be asking if that example is right

@vicky_molokh the wall of text, albeit well organized, is pretty dense to parse before you get to a succinct question.

And I'm not even sure what you want to be asking is stackable

3:32 PM
Opinion question: "Why do you think we should ban shovelling pancakes?"
Facts questions: "I've seen these arguments for banning pancake-shovelling, but they seem like just a front for some other, less obvious arguments. What are the deeper arguments for banning pancake-shovelling that are quite common in the relevant population?"

A (more) factual question would be "what proportion of players think like option 2". You are asking "What reasons do players who like option 2, like option 2?"

I'd want to ask for proportions, but I think that's an unachievably high level of precision.
> "What reasons do players who like option 2, like option 2?"
Well, in a way yes.

The question you are asking is just asking us to restate and clump other opinions, which seems even harder to translate to a good question here.

@vicky_molokh That's close to your facts example, but you need some qualifiers to avoid being closed as a list question that's entirely opinion based.

'I like WoD' is an opinion. 'People tend to like WoD for its X, Y and Z, while its U, V and W tend to have little effect on its likeability, and its M, N and O tend to result in people disliking it' is a description of facts, even if in low precision.

3:36 PM
@vicky_molokh In following with your previous example, "What are the three most common reasons for pro-death-risk players to insist that there must be a real chance of character death in the rpgs they play?"
@vicky_molokh You're going to need to have some citations to back something like that up in an answer.... and if you're asking about prevalence of opinions about rpgs, the polling data is scarce.

Hmm, that's an odd change. Would it actually make things better in terms of acceptability of the question?

@vicky_molokh Asking for the most common would make it technically answerable, but unlikely to have a verifiable answer. So yes, better question, but also unlikely to be answered or answerable.

how can I directly message someone

@G.Moylan Start a chat and invite them.

I feel like I'm being called out by a mod for something I didn't do and I want to discuss it. How do I do that?

3:40 PM
@G.Moylan There is no DM system here.
@G.Moylan Unless the mod is in chat, the best way is to start a meta to go over it.

@G.Moylan Is this about the thing where your posited monopoly as an ttrpg?

LOL no

lol

@Rubiksmoose Oh yeah, meta. I keep forgetting about meta. Post in meta.

For formal discussions, Meta is the best, but those discussions are public

3:41 PM
Yeah, so no weird stuff about monopoly. People might think less of you.

I'm more bothered bu the comment that' up on the post. My comments were deleted, and I feel like one of them contributed to the potential thought process but whatever they were deleted. But the comment calls me out as "trying to get someone to change an answer" and I certainly wasn't doing that, and I don't wnat a comment out there accusing me of that

@G.Moylan I don't know what comments these are, but feel free to flag it as no longer needed
If it's addressing you and you've read it, it doesn't need to stick around any longer.

done

ok, that's removed now

ty. idk why that bothered me so much but it did

3:47 PM
@G.Moylan Generally the important thing to know about conversations here is that there are all public (besides a system that the mods can use for special cases)
Feel free to bring issues (no matter how small) to meta and they should get addressed.

@Rubiksmoose ok I'll keep that in mind going forward. I just felt like ti was a bit petty andnot worth Meta's time

in context it matched a comment pattern we see sometimes: "you didn't give the kind of answer i want the question to get" or similar
i recognise you didn't mean it that way, but that would've been what got picked up on there

I'm not familiar enough with comment patterns to really know, so if I somehow imitated that that's my bad. I thought my comment about harvesting poisons was still relevant though but if we're not discussing then ok

@G.Moylan I mean, petty or not, meta is the tool we have to resolve issues. And, I imagine that it is probably one of the only ways that mods receive feedback on their actions (which I imagine is helpful for them to hear at least )

> There is no DM system here.
I'm pretty sure this means a totally different thing here. ^_^

3:50 PM
@vicky_molokh hah!

BUT WHO WILL KEEP THE DM's IN CHEcK?!?!?! Won't SOMEBODY think of the Players!?!?

ANARCHY!

No DM system intensifies

Yeah I was a bit confused by the "No DM system" too :D

fyi, certain versions of the linux zip function won't archive files over ~2gb

3:58 PM
@goodguy5 32-bit zip on bsd?

hrm.... good question. not sure.
The only difference I can tell is that they were compiled on different red hat versions.
and, obviously, at different times.

4:10 PM
@G.Moylan Would you like a chat accusing you of that. I can do that for you if you need it.

>.>
I'll dig my own Monopoly hole, thank you

I hate when I get the tumbleweed badge. I think the views on my question actually went down at one point.

Wind's howling...

@ColinGross Colin, why are you trying to get people to change their answer?

lmao

4:14 PM
@goodguy5 So they can have The right one, of course. I think the real question is why aren't you on the side of the one true answer ?!

> why aren't you on the side of the one true answer
Farming the Populist achievement.

the populist badge feelsgoodman

@goodguy5 That is one that I don't think I have even gotten close to getting.

would the populist badge be gold, silver, bronze, or red?

gold, right?

4:28 PM
It is gold here, but I feel like that was a joke/reference

I mean, it's pretty good.

"We just wanna remind you that you didn't get what you wanted (:"

@Rubiksmoose curse you I was too slow

@Carcer bwahahaha! So close though.
On the other hand I like the way you phrased yours better.

in my defence I am quite tired
I was driving for eight hours yesterday and I'm not fully recovered

@Carcer oof that is a heck of a drive

@Rubiksmoose stop editing your answer. You're making the downvote button jump around for me.

This stack seems particularly quick to respond vs SO, but I guess my posts there havea ll been under a bit of an esoteric tag

it was a long day, yes
from london to plymouth and back
for a sodding 15 minute appointment

sounds like THAT could have been a video conference

4:45 PM
@G.Moylan Its easier to respond when you don't have to hack together code or look up the relevant RFC and section.

the NHS doesn't have such modern technology, mate

@G.Moylan Likely another meeting that should have been an email.
@Carcer It's all leeches and bile, yes?

^ my whole existence

Which is an upgrade from those noxious humours

@Carcer wwwwwwoooow
@Carcer gotta do what you gotta do I guess.

if it was in the sates those 15 minutes would cost $200 in copay too

@Carcer In that case, short appointment seems good? Here's your prescription. Have a nice evening or tea or whatever it is the archaic English speakers do these days.

see
it's a followup appointment for previous surgery, to which the conclusion was "yes you'll need a bit more surgery there, we'll be in touch to schedule that"

@Rubiksmoose I'm going to start referring to the hands as the "action hand" and "bonus hand" from now on because that makes me giggle.
@Carcer One of these days surgery won't require touching. Just an email. Bam! e-surgery.

4:51 PM
@ColinGross And we'll get spam e-surgeries?

@GreySage Yeah, but that still won't be as bad as all these cigarettes my computer has smoked for me.

click heer 4 noes jawb

"apply this firmware update"
if the patient fails to boot after surgery, try unseating and reseating the brain

@Carcer I think you just have to dump ice on a person then rub them the right way. Just turn them off and on again.

A: Does a failed Locate Creature foil Nystul's Magic Aura?

lightcatThe wording of the spell matters If the characters are aware that there might be an impostor and they word the spell carefully, then the spell will fail. For example "Show me Sir Galahad the Great, rightful King of Brittax, Friend of Elves." The polymorphed minion is not this specific person a...

I used to be really good at putting my partner to sleep, whether that be by gentle petting of the head or a rambling story
Bardic arts yo

Now I'm picturing some bizarre kingdom where they choose the new monarch by casting Locate Creature and crowning whoever it points to.

Not as weird as the historical Venetian elections

@MarkWells hahahaha

5:05 PM
@kviiri I'll grant you that.
Until 2016, the only system of government that required an illiterate child to make the decisions.

@MarkWells What about Donald Trump?

Of course the Locatocracy is open to corruption since only the mage knows what the spell is really saying. I assume they use several mages and have to be unanimous.

@MarkWells To be fair, the American government does not require an illiterate child to make decisions, it simply has an illiterate child making decisions. ;)

oops I missed the joke when Mark made it lol

The more interesting way to rig that election would be to find Mystara or whoever is in charge of magic and convince them that you're the rightful King.

5:11 PM
@MarkWells That sounds way harder than plastering the city with mean things about your opponent.

Although in your defense, I have not read the US Constitution in many years, so it's possible I missed that amendment.

And I guess there are historical cases of using divination to choose a successor. Tibet.

reincarnation as well
in a way
Tibetan priests have to divine who in the world is the reincarnation of the DL
