12:05 AM
took me a second to realize there were 2 different conversations happening here

Ben
Or is there....

I'm kinda sick right now... throat is all mucusy.
lol

Ben
OoooOOOoOoOOOOOOoooOOO…..
@V2Blast Blegh. No good :(

12:25 AM

Ben
[Guy draws a line in the sand] "You take a step over this line and I will punch you."
That's the punch line.

@Ben Delet this.

12:46 AM
Lol

Ben
@Xirema This is my incentive. Lol
The hatred fuels my passion for puns
Haha

1:01 AM
I think you mean hatreed
Sorry

1:12 AM
hey there @KorvinStarmast and @Viishnahn

@Shalvenay Oh hi there Shal

how're things going?

relaxing for the next 18 minutes, then scrambling out the door

Listenin' to Jimi Hendrix, Hey Joe, and chillin'
A few years back I was at a ZZ Top concert where they played a Hendrix tribute; they opened with Hey Joe. Come to find out, Billy Gibbons was in a band early in life who opened for a few Hendrix concerts.

1:17 AM
@KorvinStarmast ah. doing alright here.

I've got an interesting situation with my 5E group that I'm trying to work out.

@Viishnahn oh?

They're going down into a labyrinth of tunnels (think like termite tunnels but larger) underground that's been enchanted by a magic dagger so that they can't navigate well through the tunnels.
Some of this might sound familiar from a couple weeks ago
They're looking for a young girl from a cultist family that ran into the tunnels to escape from the cultist priests looking to make her into a sacrifice. The priests and entourage are also looking for her.
(Obviously I'm leaving out a lot of detail here, so bear with me here)
I want my party to face a patrol that's way, way above what they can handle at one time. I want them to be able to detect the patrol first so that they can scout and plan, but I also want them to have the clock against them while trying to find this girl in the tunnels before they do.
Some hunters in the patrol have been marked by this dagger and can navigate it without issue. I had an NPC drop it casually in a conversation with them, but I'll bring it up again if they seem to forget.
I want them to be able to have the choice of taking the patrol head-on or trying to use guerilla tactics against them, but their navigation is significantly hindered by this magic item that's giving them disorientation.
@Shalvenay What do you think?

@Viishnahn would they be able to pick up track or sign of the patrol? large group, more likely to leave clues behind

@Shalvenay Absolutely. I want them to see/hear the patrol way before the patrol could detect them. Tracking it would be effortless for the party ranger (plus two casts of Guidance for good measure)

1:29 AM
@Viishnahn yeah, they'd pick up on sign of the patrol roaming around no problem

@Shalvenay I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't want to take on 12+ armed/robed individuals at once (it would be a slaughterfest, most of those are CR 4+), but I don't want to say "You'll get lost if you retreat"
I suppose I could have them find the dagger before they go much further in the tunnels - that would increase their chances at everything

Q: When should I vote to undelete an answer?

BloodcinderI recently crossed the rep threshold to gain the trusted user privilege. The FAQ is very clear about the deleting and editing privileges... but not the undeleting privilege. When should I vote to undelete an answer? What is the guidance on this? For example, I just saw what I believe to be a co...

@Shalvenay Thanks for letting me think out loud, Shal. Gotta go, catch you later!

Ben
@Viishnahn ohhh thinking out loud?! It's a good thing I didn't pull you up! [Shakes my fist at young whipper snappers]
@Miniman so, if I swap out Dual Wielder for GWM, what would I swap Mobile for?

1:47 AM
@Ben Probably a stat upgrade, if you've got the option. Tye barbarian has a lot to gain from stats.

Ben
:49109582... or savage attacker? Just had a peek at the list

Savage Attacker unfortunately sucks.
It's one of many feats that sounds thematic, but the implementation makes it not worth taking.

Ben
@Miniman My Str is boosted by a magical belt, my Con is decent and my dex is ok. The only other one maybe is wisdom because of the Storm Herald path

@Ben Given that you don't use a shield, I'm guessing "my Con is decent and my Dex is ok" means you decided not to care about AC?

Ben
Not particularly. It's 20 atm. 21 if dual wielding. Mostly boosted by magical items
Ring & bracers of protection

1:50 AM
We got ourselves a new debate. Should teleport in 5e be range restricted or not? Our 3.5 ruling that banned it from reaching more than about 2 million miles is based on text that was removed on purpose in 5e and teleport can go to any teleportation circle which we've already established can be used as stargates.

@Ben So Con of...18, I'm guessing?

Ben
@Miniman …Yyyyyyes
Just checked lol
25/16/18/8/14/8

Looks like gauntlets of power

Ben
@Joshua Belt of Giant Strength

I mean, it's up to you. But an ASI in Con would give you +1 AC, 20 more hp, and +1 to Con saving throws. I can't think of any feats that are going to be better than that for you.

Ben
1:56 AM
@Miniman That's fair. I could take "tough"?

You can't have too much AC.

Ben
Or... not. Not much of a trade off there

@Ben Yeah, that's always good. Maybe Alert, Lucky, Resilient(Wis or Dex) - stuff that's nice for everyone.
Martial Adept could be interesting.

Ben
40hp in place of 1 ac doesn't seem all that great

@Ben 20 hp, since the Con boost would get you 20 as well.

Ben
1:58 AM
@Miniman I was thinking that... But I have about 5 different things is can do in my bonus actions etc.
@Miniman Yeah true haha
I think alert would be good, potentially

@Ben The nice thing about the Battle Master stuff is that a lot of it just triggers on attacking, no action required.

Ben
@Miniman Yeah that's true

@Miniman Yep, most of it is on a hit with any weapon attack (some are melee weapon attack specifically)

Ben
Sentinel is the only other one I can think of that could be useful

@Ben Sentinel is definitely nice, dunno why I didn't think of it.

Ben
2:03 AM
Disarming Attack and Goading Attack could be good :D
DC 21 str saving throw
IS the DC still 21 for the goading attack? It's a Wis saving throw, but there's nothing to say the DC goes off wisdom in that situation

If it's an oxgoad than no.
Loot I set up for somebody: potion of Polymorph labelled cerebrate

@Ben DC for battle master maneuvers is 8 + Prof. Bonus + Str or Dex mod (your choice)

Ben
@Joshua oxgoad?
@V2Blast Yeah. Just doesn't make sense that something strength relate would cause a wisdom save

Yeah: a pointed stick for convincing oxen to move. Best def
Best definition I could come up with. Anyway somebody killed a lot of people with one back in the day

Ben
Oh dang. My one weakness
@Joshua Oh dang :/
Ah well. I won't argue :)
Now I just gotta convince the GM to allow me to swap my feats out haha

2:21 AM
An amulet of lifesaving is appropriate for killing vampires.

Ben
@Joshua This is true.

Ben
5:23 AM
@BESW going to give the "descriptive" attack/defense thing a go this week. got a family dinner on :)

Cool!

Ben
Do you think the defense should go the same way?

I'd probably say that every ability gets a "when you describe" provisional clause.

Ben
"I lunge at you with my bitey teeth, gnashing wildly" (gets +1d6 to roll)
"I see you coming and I use my superfast speed to try and dodge the bite!" (+1d6 to defense)

Right.

Ben
5:28 AM
Ah so for like Regen as well - "I slump down, but the amorphous blob of my body glows and shifts, and turns into [draws card - Superfast] 6 legs!"

Yup!

Ben
Cool :D
Just had a quick squiz at the original game, for the variants (Can't wait to incorporate those too).
Do you remember the average of how many times players had more than 3 features?
I suppose that's a pretty straightforward answer actually. 1 in 6 haha
Not sure if I've said it before when we originally talked about the descriptive aspect - I really think it should also be played with the Collateral variant for a properly decent game. Just a normal round of "last monster standing" is a quick round of fun.

Yes, I've come to the conclusion that Collateral Damage should be part of the core design.

5:45 AM
Yeah I concur
The only problem is it usually seems to end with no winner
But everyone wins when the parts of the island they thought of get destroyed
XD

Ben
6:10 AM
Yes and no. There can be situations with no winner, there can be situations where the only person with 3 cards ends up on top.
I've seen both happen
Though I feel like there should be a default "Power Station" on the Col. Dmg sheet haha
@BESW "Paint the Target"... can you describe how that would work?

6:38 AM
@Ben so have I,... but it seems like 9 out of 10 times the island just sinks

Ben
7:37 AM
@miniman so the GM is allowing me to swap out Mobile feat only.

7:53 AM
@kviiri so,.. it wasn't actually a big deal and I did relatively well on the mission despite it, but I just got a game where the first room only had one exit and a guard was stationary right outside it staring at the door
It was a little annoying to have to keep that guy down the whole mission

8:18 AM
@trogdor aww nuts
Although well, a single guard on the hunt for your guys is seldom that bad

@kviiri I kept him down the whole time
Partly because the paralysis injection thing is great
4 or so extra ko time is great and once I dosed him twice I didn't need to sit someone on him for the rest of the mission

Yeah
Funny how the paralyzing injection recharges

8:44 AM
I need to vent just a bit, I was this close to ranting at a player in my usual group
/me holds fingers really close
This player had a doodle for a session of Microscope. Everyone filled it. Nothing happened. I asked him, much later, if the game was still going to happen at some point
He noted that the doodled dates had passed so it wouldn't happen anytime soon. This wasn't a big issue for me
But I pointed out that our scheduling has always been a pain, and that I really detested being the only one to take charge of it, esp. when the others wouldn't basically do their most basic responsibility of responding to my communications in a timely fashion
Y'know, the "talk about the issues you're having" thing that's practically essential for any social activity
He got so blatantly dismissive of the problem
"Well some of us have other life than RPGs"

He's the guy who has a basement full of DnD swag, he's the guy whose own campaigns keep failing because apparently he can't arrange the scheduling without me being there. I would've blown in his face if it wasn't for another player who articulated his appreciation for the work I had done in a much more civil manner than I could've in my worn-out state
Even then, the non-scheduler guy was like "well what can you do. That's just how it is"

At a certain point I'd just stop including Mr Not My Problem in the plans.

Yeah, I think that point is now. He's not invited to any future games by me for the time being

I'm all for being patient and charitable, but as some point the Little Red Hen comes a-cluckin'.

8:53 AM
...although he is scheduled to join my Lady Blackbird next Sunday. You know, a time that was scheduled in the kviiri fashion --- in a timely, efficient manner
I mean... I know scheduling games is hard work. Because I'm the one in our group that does it. It's easy if everyone co-operates, but circumstances in life and all make it harder
And one's patience grows thin after so many times of "oh shoot I double-booked Wednesday evening", unfilled doodles and such.

This is why I ultimately went with "Hey, I'll be home Saturday evenings. If enough of you show up we'll play a game."
And very quickly it became BESW and Trogdor Watch Netflix.
Well, no, that's unfair. It worked well for a year or two.

:D
brb, lunchies

#DnD and other games have little things that only make sense to Europeans. "Travel rations aren't known for their flavor." They are when you know how to properly dry meat and roots or pitcook hopôp.

@kviiri yeah it's extra weird because nothing else does
Except like the default melee stuff and one specific dart gun

9:10 AM
@BESW I arrived in a timely manner. So Geek Night Witches have a low probability of being a thing after all?

Sorry about that. We can try again some time, maybe? Lately I've been mentally and emotionally exhausted by the end of the week and very... not present.

I'm not too heartbroken, I haven't been visiting myself either, did I?
and NW isn't exactly a cozy game
We can try again when schedules and lives free up and become a bit more permissive
but I didn't come here to complain about Geek Night but rather to shill this:

I definitely bit off more than I can chew right now, emotionally, with Night Witches, but right now I'm also barely able to run an hour of silly dinosaur violence.

@BESW just tell me if it's too much for me to show up any given day too, don't invite me if you would be better off with a day off
I know that doesn't always work for everyone or every situation
But if it will for you I can definitely understand

Oh gosh no, it's the narrative stuff that I don't have much beans for lately.

9:24 AM
Mk

The only concern with having you over is that sometimes my dad needs a lot, but I know you get that.

Yep
I just know very well what it's like to need decompression time alone
And I also know from experience that sometimes people who need it feel like they can't take it or they will disappoint someone

Thank you.

9:46 AM
@trogdor I think stims (extra AP) also do?

@kviiri oh yeah, strangely I forgot to mention those even though I started with stim lady and KO injection lady
@BESW no problem

@trogdor Also most EMPs recharge despite being... left on the ground
EMPs can be used to rob safes without hacking them, btw

Huh
I haven't seen those yet
Maybe exactly one in an in mission shop when I couldn't afford it

Tony Xu is one of the better characters for that reason... he has an unlimited "melee EMP" implant that allows him to use his attack to disable one electronic device adjacent to him. He also has a shock trap that can be used to arm a door so it stuns any guard opening it, regardless of armor, for 2 turns.

10:17 AM
@trogdor One thing I like is how different pairs of characters often have special dialogue at starts of missions
It can get a bit repetitive eventually but they put a lot of work into it

I've noticed that
Like Decker and Internacionale have dialogue that implies they are both sick of each other's (Honk Honk)
so far I don't think I have run into any other combos that have specific dialogue though
every mission without those two has been just one person saying a one liner

Huh, I think I've got specific dialogue quite often

10:43 AM
I've gotten dialogue that a specific agent says, but not to another specific other agent or a response since then
It may be that I've picked agents the other two times that don't have a lot of dialogue with each other

@ColinGross me too.

3:38 PM
Hello folks
Exciting day for me! I'm taking the train in the opposite direction from usual!
Too bad it's too dark to see any scenery :(

4:02 PM
@kviiri Trains are fun. You're going home from Hogwarts?

Wait, you were riding the train across the whole planet in one direction all these years?

@vicky_molokh Nay, it's a circular track
Or well, not circular, but a loop anyway.

Well yes, a track across the whole planet is circular.
Or at least a loop.

4:22 PM
@kviiri Are you traveling clockwise or anti-clockwise?

4:36 PM
@ColinGross Widdershins

@ColinGross one mile south, turn est, go for another mile. Then turn north, go straight for two mile more, turn est again and walk another mile. Finally go north for a mile more and find yourself back where you started.

@ColinGross I'm very conflicted about your glyph answer

5:38 PM
@Rubiksmoose IMO, I think the trick is that Glyph of Warding doesn't have language like "must be incapable of targeting more than one creature, or must target an area". Instead, it just says "the spell must target one creature, or target an area".
That frees a lot of spells that might otherwise be denied use.

@Xirema Indeed. I've always read it the stricter way without even considering this reading though. I always considered it more along the lines of twinned
@Xirema Yeah I do think colin's reading is reasonable and honestly the way I would rule for no other reason than it does allow more options and I don't see it being any more powerful than it already is.
However I do wonder about intent.

The open question on my mind is whether or not the fact that the Slow spell specifies a 40' cube satisfies the "target one creature OR target an area" logic. Because if it does, then you'd be able to slow up to 6 creatures. BUT, because the spell says you "choose" those creatures, maybe it prevents that interpretation?
Would Slow be able to hit 6 creatures if they were chosen randomly by the spell in the 40' cube, instead of being chosen by the caster?

@Xirema Is there any spell that does that? AFAIK it is either "all creatures in X area" or it gives you a choice right?

@Rubiksmoose Technically spells like Sleep or Color Spray might have that property, but their targets are neither A) arbitrarily limited to a specific number nor B) picked strictly randomly.

@Xirema Yeah sleep leapt to my mind as well
But to answer the thoguht experiment I would still say that slow would not be able to hit 6 creatures in that way.
They are still targeting more than one creature.
(I fear we are digging dangerously close to the ambiguity of whether AOEs target the creatures in their area)

5:55 PM
lol, yeah, best not to rehash all of that. XD

So for this theoretical randomly picked creatures within an area spell the glyph would simply limit it to one creature being the target and that target being the creature that triggered the glyph.
@Xirema I'm still upset that we can't answer that seemingly very basic question with a solid answer though

@Rubiksmoose I was looking for a counter example that had obligate multiple targets. Then I remembered i had real work to do ;(

I guess I'll accept that excuse ;P

@ColinGross Usually clockwise, this time not

6:21 PM
I need a quick bit of help: I need to clear the cookie from one particular website from my computer. And I know almost nothing about computers.
Tips?
(Win10, chrome)

@nitsua60 Open console with F12, go to Application, then cookies on the left under "Storage" and there is a button to clear them
"clear all" button on the top after selecting cookies

Okay, I'm at cookies. (And thank you, btw.) But I probably don't want to clear all of them, right? Because I like lots of places I go remembering me. It's just this one particular website that I want to clear.
Oh, is it only showing me cookies from the active tab?

from this interface on the console you are only seeing the ones from the tab from which you opened the console

Yes--excellent. Thanks!

no problem :)

6:27 PM
I went to a site to write a kid's recommendation. Overlay says they use cookies, do I want to accept or decline? (If you decline, one cookie will be set to remember that preference.) I decline, because I'll never be back here. Then I get to the site and it tells me that you can only submit while using cookies. So I need to change my preference!

@nitsua60 Sounds shady.

I mean, it's at upenn.edu so I'm not too worried...?

@nitsua60 I update my previous statement to "sounds shoddy"

Nice update =)

Choosing to accept or decline cookies in a site only does whatever the creator of the site wants. It is for legal purposes that they ask the question. There's little stopping them from setting whatever cookies they want regardless of your answer.

6:39 PM
@nitsua60 I believe the traditional payment for this kind of service is one circular sweet baked good.

So the fact that they asked and that the site is behaving differently according to your answer is probably a good sign

@Rubiksmoose Sounds right. @Sdjz okay if I use the address on file to e-mail you a cookie my kids baked?
@Sdjz Interesting. So are you saying that legally they have to ask, but that they don't actually have to respect the preference you express?

@nitsua60 I am having trouble parsing this sentence

@nitsua60 :)

@nitsua60 No I mean legally they have to respect your answer but if they are malicious they might not care about legal stuff in the first place

6:43 PM
@Sdjz Oh, I think I follow. You're saying a malicious actor can easily put up an overlay that says the right things but still do whatever in code.

@nitsua60 Ooh you want to e-mail me a cookie that your kids have baked and you want to use my "e-mail on file" to do it? I don't know what my e-mail on file is but sure :)
@nitsua60 Yes exactly

@Sdjz What temperature is your router set at? Mine must break the cookie into crumbs ("packets" is the compsci term, no?) for transmission through the tubes, and then yours reconstitutes it?

@nitsua60 Send them in dough form, then mass them together and bake on the other end

Perfect.
(Updates shopping list for mini-morsels, not regular ones.)

@nitsua60 A school website storing cookies probably isn't an issue. Just remember to clear them when you're done with the site.

6:53 PM
@nitsua60 I think they only have to ask if you're in the EU too.

7:46 PM
You know, I rag on 5e's rules a lot, but the rule on Simultaneous Effects really is a very clever and good ruling IMO. It is really simple and has broad applicability and patches a lot of otherwise-uncertain scenarios.

7:59 PM
@Rubiksmoose I concur. That's a good way of resolving it. Increases player agency.

@ColinGross That as well. Most of the time it results in the players having the choice in my experience which is a nice player-forward rule.
hmmm that max spell question definitely needs some work. I can see how someone may have thought it was enough to ask on, but it is one of those surprisingly nuanced things I guess lol

Pretty sure the answer is just "Be a 17th level wizard, multiclass in whatever 3 other classes gives you the most possible spells". Depends on whether they mean prepared or learned spells though.

If it is just spells known (regardless of what you can actually cast) and discoutned the prepared spellcaster wouldn't it be straight wizard?
Maybe bard as a MC?
and of course take magic initiate at some point I would assume
But a wizard can "know" every wizard spell right? they just have to find it and copy it into their spellbook?

@Xirema I thought the sorcerer with all those neato sorcery points can cast the most spells in a day.

@ColinGross Well, that's a third type of question they might be asking. ;)

8:11 PM
@Rubiksmoose Yeah I wonder how much that would cost. Isn't there a json resource for all the basic rules?

@ColinGross It would cost a lot lol
And I have no idea about a json version of the rules.
So there are three valid versions I can think of right now:
1) maximum spells able to be cast in a day
2) maximum spells on a character spell list
3) max spells able to be prepared

I think 2 might be better stated as "maximum spells a character can learn", since otherwise the answer is "take one level each of Bard, Cleric, Druid, Paladin, Ranger, Warlock, Wizard, and noT SORCERER BECAUSE YOU ONLY NEED IZZET MEMBERSHIP TO GET CHAOS BOLT SO SUCK IT SORCERERS!!!11!one!!"
Because the one level is enough to "put the spell on your spell list", qualifying the use of a Spell Scroll.

8:27 PM
@Xirema Yeah it would have to be "able to cast" so that the whole cleric list wouldn't count with just 1 level
It is tricky to phrase succinctly though

8:42 PM
@Rubiksmoose I don't think the wizard's sexuality impacts their spells known.

@goodguy5 oh dear lol
can we flag this answer comment down?

idk, it's also asking if they mean spell slots
@Rubiksmoose I decided that another comment was achieving the same thing, flagged

@goodguy5 indeed, but the problem is the answer content is more harmful than the slight question it contains IMO. Mods often delete the answer part out of a comment if they feel it is worth keeping around.
Still I'm always a lot more worried that answer comments will simply satisfy a brand new querent and encourage them not to fix up their question

9:11 PM
@Rubiksmoose So you're saying we need to build a wall to keep the querrents in until they fix communism their question ?

@ColinGross hahaha I am not.

@Rubiksmoose And you solemnly swear you are not a jelly doughnut ?

@ColinGross Though that does remind me that I get to continue listening to a Paranoia real-play on the podcast on the way home. So that is exciting.
@ColinGross I make no such promises.
I may goofily swear. Never solemnly though. ;)

@Rubiksmoose Pursuant to not being a berliner, cold war averted. Let the querents be free and exercise their democratic rights to not give a crap.
And damn them for it! Dun dun dunnnnn

OK, I guess I am glad that I missed all of the drama with Zak S that showed up in our feed. That was disturbing to read.

Ben
I think I now have... 8 sets of dice?
@KorvinStarmast My imeidtate reaction is to find out what you're on about
Which is interesting. It's often how people react to unsavoury stuff
1: "Oh, that's disgusting!"
2: "Show me!"

The only thing I know about Zak S is that he's a Piece of Stuff† and that he's somehow connected to the D&D team.

@Ben eh, I am content not knowing what it's about as long as I don't need to

11:10 PM
@Xirema Look at the credits in your PHB if you have the first printing. The feed link advises the general public that future printings will no longer acknowledge that consultant during the play test. But of course, I had to try and find out 'wtf happened in 2014' and yuk. blah. echoes of gamergate.
I am not sure why that was in our feed, but it was, and now I learn a bit more about the history of our hobby, and this one's not one of the better parts. Onward into the better future, one hopes.
@trogdor You were smarter than I, in not clicking on the link. Good move.
@Ben Only 8?

@KorvinStarmast Frankly it sounds like more of the kind of news I already hear too much of
I'm already worried humanity is going to cook the planet beyond our tolerance

@Ben It's pretty easy to google if you are interested. What Xirema summarized is accurate.

Among other things I won't bring up

@trogdor In the meantime, I'll try to bring in more good news next time I enter chat. I saw the feed, and went "what" and clicked ... some days I don't make the best call.
@trogdor But wait, there is good news. Daughter called last night. I'll be a grandad in September. My wife is over the moon pleased. So that's more positive, I think.

@KorvinStarmast it's not your fault, I'm just explaining that more bad news isn't what I need right now so I ain't looked for it
@KorvinStarmast oooh grats
Must be a special feeling

11:23 PM
@trogdor wise plan, and thanks for the grats. Yeah, it's kinda cool, (She lives 9 hours away, though ... life will get more interesting, I guess)

Lol

@KorvinStarmast Huzzah!

On that happy note, I bid you farewell. See you all soon. :)

It's certainly a lot closer than some kids are to thier parents

@KorvinStarmast Congrats!

@KorvinStarmast Congrats! Stupid question: is this the first grandchild?

@nitsua60 I think by "I'll be a grandad in September" he is alluding to that

I also think so, but couldn't remember if there were already a grandchild in play. (I've heard people use the construction "I'll be a grandfather again in ___," so there's that?)

That's fair
I don't know for sure either but I'm leaning towards this being the first time

Yeah--I'd probably put 40-to-1 odds on you're right.

hey there @nitsua60
