4:00 PM
Shennanigans abound, once you get 9th level spells ...

I feel like true polymorph is the best way to hide something. You have a creature gear up with whatever you are hiding and then true polymorph it into an object. Then you do the same thing over and over again and it would require multiple high level magic users with dispel magic to get to the center of the tootsy-roll pop.
(or one antimagic field)

For CR 9, if you concentrate for an hour you can have available ... a .. Glabrezu, Bone Devil, Young Blue Dragon, Young Silver Dragon, Cloud Giant, Fire Giant, Clay Golem, Treant,
> And of course, the ever popular T Rex at CR 8 and Giant Ape at CR 7. .
@DavidCoffron Or one beholder

Or one beerholder

4:21 PM
hi

@Gwideon \o

<ITAG>!

@KorvinStarmast big yikes

Apparently we left our last 5e session with us (5 PCs and 2 NPCs) coming across a caravan being attacked by 15-20 bugbears.

4:40 PM
how is everyone

fluish

excited to have a session tonight (see above)

Oof, that's a lotta bugbears

yeah, i'd actually like to bypass. I don't know that caravan. I'm not sure why i feel a need to 'save' them over my own hide.
but my hunch is also that's not an option.
So...'ere we go!

4:43 PM
Not playing a defiant hero then?

This will also be the first session with my new character.
@kviiri A very uncharismatic fighter.

What avg level is the party?

@Akira_Kurusu 5
except for the 2 NPCs. I have no idea what they are.

Eh, you'll be fine.

It's a no from me chief

4:45 PM
I think our smartest character has a 10 int.

When in doubt, dimension door out

Leeroy Jenkins that business

@Akira_Kurusu Not yet available.

Actually, it probably wouldn't be that bad if you had a bard with Hypnotic Pattern though

I assume this game doesn't have a clear-set convention about encounter difficulty?

4:47 PM
@kviiri not really. generaly they're hard/deadly.
@Akira_Kurusu don't think the bard has it.
We are currently mounted (not on each other.) And not on warhorses. Just regular draft horses. But..mounted.

Side note, in a campaign I just reached level 5 with my Sorcerer, and I'm really lost on which 3rd level spell to take. I'm Silver Draconic Bloodline, so my cold spells will be stronger when I reach 6th level. Also, I'm a blaster and focus on combat spells mostly, while our Wizard focuses utility and battlefield control. My metamagics are Empowered Spell and Quickened Spell. Any suggestions?
Oh by the way, I want to avoid taking fireball if at all possible.
My sorcerer does not use any fire spells, due to a strong dislike of heat.

Fireball is a bit of a cliché anyway :)

@Akira_Kurusu Do you have any caster in the group that can Dispel or counterspell?
@kviiri It is. BUt it's also the only spell that does what it does.

We just need a cold fireball
call it snowball

@Akira_Kurusu I am a HUGE fan of slow

4:58 PM
@NautArch Yeah. I think it's a bit of a problem tbh, there's hundreds of spells and they couldn't put in a competing explosive damage spell?

And there's always sleet storm
@kviiri Definitely. You want a non-concentration area effect damage spell. Well, there's fireball. and...yeah. that's it.

@Akira_Kurusu It's worth asking your DM if you can work on an "iceball" or some such spell, like Himi mentioned

If you can do it please call it snowball for me lol

@Akira_Kurusu and haste is also a great one if you've got a melee rogue or a paladin for extra smitey goodness.

Ah, these are all good ideas! No dispel or counterspell, but we just got to level 5 and I think the wizard might be taking one or both of those.

5:06 PM
@Himitsu_no_Yami lol

@Akira_Kurusu what spells doyou currently have?

Think of it, you conjure just a giant snowball and hurl it at a point in range. DEX save or XdY cold damage and maybe slightly reduced movement (less overall damage to balance if so) on a failed save or half damage and no other penalty on a successful save

@NautArch Let me check real quick, one sec
My spells as of now are: Cantrips- Mending, Message, Frostbite, Ray of Frost, Shocking Grasp. 1st- Chaos Bolt, Disguise Self, Ice Knife, Feather Fall. 2nd- Snilloc's Snowball Swarm.
I realize snowball swarm is kind of a bad spell, but I took it for thematic purposes.

@NautArch I'm partial to Gust myself.
You could say I'm a huge fan of being a huge fan.

@Akira_Kurusu chaos bolt ain't great either

5:15 PM
I just like chaos bolt, it feels sorcerer-y. It's only 1 average damage weaker than chromatic orb, and has a chance to leap as well (the chance increases if I use empowered metamagic)
Not saying it's great, but it's a fun spell in my opinion.

@Akira_Kurusu You definitely could use a more powerful concentration spell. I'd really take a close look at either sleet storm (thematic) or slow.

Slow is a high contender for the spot, I'll definitely consider that one. Thanks!

5:35 PM
@Akira_Kurusu Silver dragon screams sleet storm for me. Too bad you don't have sculpting or careful or whatever the one is that can carve out allies, though.

GcL
@Yuuki I'm frequently blown away by it's utility.

@GcL Most people like bursty damage spells so something like Gust is a breath of fresh air.

GcL
A gust a day keeps the flurry of blows away.

I really want to take sleet storm, but I feel it would be a big detriment to our melee fighters. Since I took the blasty metamagics, it would severely weaken the battlefield control element.
@GcL Are you talking about the gust cantrip, or the gust of wind 2nd level spell?

GcL
@Akira_Kurusu My gust services department always operates at the highest level.

5:48 PM
do you have any plans for which metamagics you'll take at 10th/17th?

Hmm, is permanent actually a duration?

@NautArch damn 5e and its making of this determination nontrivial
but yes probably.

GcL
@NautArch "permanent until dispelled" shows up in descriptions, but in 5e, it's not a category of spell duration.

decided to ask it on mainsite

I look sadly upon the daily reputation cap

5:58 PM
@GcL I don't think it does
"until dispelled" does, but does "permanent"?

GcL
@DavidCoffron Maybe I have an old copy or am mis-remembering true polymorph.

@GcL The old printings did say permanent like wall of stone and the Xanathar's building summons do, but TP doesn't anymore

GcL
@DavidCoffron I blame the cats. They're very errata-ic.

@NautArch When I reach 10th level, I will probably take Careful Spell (For cone of cold) or Heightened Spell for the save-or-suck spells.

cone of cold is the bees knees

6:05 PM
I'm so excited for that! But it's a long ways off haha

So my wife's company is doing their holiday party at a bowling alley and apparently we're getting team shirts with names on them. I'm going to go with Munson.

@GcL And stealthy (since that change doesn't show up in the errata document)
@NautArch Like from the Kingpin movie or is there another reference I don't get?

@DavidCoffron kingpin ;)

6:21 PM
How much should an animated skeleton weigh? Playing a necromancer and trying to determine how hard it would be to carry one via flight.

I don't mean the actual skeleton lol, I'm talking about the armor scraps specifically
The shortsword and bow are easy to determine

@Akira_Kurusu 5e? what armor is it wearing?

It doesn't specify, it just says "Armor scraps"
@NautArch And yes, 5e

@Akira_Kurusu what says that?

6:24 PM
I always felt like the skeleton drawing in the book looked like studded leather.
So, less than 13 lbs

oh, i see. the skeleton block says that.

Look at the stat block in the MM, and the AC says "13(armor scraps)"

They give AC 13 and its probably considered Medium Armor placing it as two less AC than a Chain Shirt. Chain Mail to Splint Mail is 1 AC and 5 lbs.

So, 10 lbs less than a Chain Shirt is 10 lbs.

Studded leather makes sense, considering it has 14 DEX for +2 AC, meaning the armor should have 11. Studded leather is 12+DEX normally, so scrapped version would have 1 less AC

And you could always just keep them naked. It's only +1 AC anyway

6:29 PM
The 1 AC is worth it, since it's so low. Then again, if they're naked I could just Mage Armor them and give them 15 AC
Huh.. Now that I think about it. Can animated skeletons use shields?

Q: Can animated undead wear armor and use weapons?

BobbitoA wizard has just killed a group of heavily armored fighters with great weapons. He uses Animate Dead on the bodies. The spell reads as: This spell creates an undead servant. Choose a pile of bones or a corpse of a Medium or Small humanoid within range. Your spell imbues the target with a fou...

I'm keep trying to upvote and keep being told that I'm out of votes.
Just take em off tomorrow's quota!

Great article, thanks @Sdjz

@Akira_Kurusu mage armor is on self. you can't cast it on someone else.

@NautArch Actually Mage armor has a range: Touch
In 5e, at least.

6:40 PM
oh dang

"You touch a willing creature who isn't wearing armor, and a protective magical force surrounds it until the spell ends. The target's base AC becomes 13 + its Dexterity modifier. The spell ends if the target dons armor or if you dismiss the spell as an action."

i could have sworn it was self. nevermind then!

You're good!
I cast it on my familiar all the time xD

Q: Can a creature with only a swim speed even move while on land?

Medix2There are creatures, such as the hunter shark, which has a 40-foot swim speed and a 0-foot "normal/walking" speed; it's longest range attack is 5 feet. Does this mean you could (by some means) drag this creature onto land, and then stab it with a reach weapon? To me this is just somewhat of a di...

@NautArch I think the corresponding Warlock invocation is self-only
> Armor of Shadows

You can cast mage armor on yourself at will, without expending a spell slot or material components.

6:46 PM
@V2Blast ah! that's where I was coming from. My Bardlock had that invocation.

7:03 PM
Yeah, I too keep forgetting that Mage Armor can be cast on allies.
It's such a niche spell for anyone that's not a spellcaster, though.
Or at least not a Wizard/Sorcerer/Rogue/Warlock, since pretty much everyone else has better methods to gain armor, and of that group, the only one that can't get it without a specific subclass (Rogue) can still halve the damage they take anyways.

@Xirema Tonight is the first full session with my battlemaster :)
thanks again for the build help

Oooh, have fun.

@NautArch to break up that bug bear group you need a fear spell/cause fear to many so that some of them run off. Then defeat them in detail. or fog cloud: obscure half of the battle field for a few rounds, and defeat two smaller groups of bug bears. Or hypnotic pattern or color spray. (IIRC, there is an Ancients Paladin abilth that does something like that, but it may only be against fey)

It turns out that, for the new campaign I joined over the weekend, all of us (myself included) are a bunch of edgelords. First thing we did when the session started was each go to the tavern and find a dark corner to brood in.
Which is kind of difficult in a party of 7 PCs.
The tavern is gonna have to start renting out its dark corners.

@KorvinStarmast I'll take we have none of the above for TPK, alex.

7:09 PM
Do you have slow?
Sprit Guardian?

@NautArch My professional advice is to hit the bugbears real hard

@KorvinStarmast Not sure if the cleric has spirit guardians. I sure hope so.
My wizard was supposed to have slow :(

@Xirema Now That's Funny 8^D

@KorvinStarmast We also made the mistake of allowing our Tortle Fighter to lead the way out of Saltmarsh. We went in the complete opposite direction of where we were supposed to go. I feel so bad for the DM. 7 players and none of us are competent enough to actually get the plot rolling.

@Xirema As DM, I find that plot isn't important. ;) if the players wander off, work with them or drop a few clues for a potential change in direction .... but, if they fiddle for too long, Rome may eventually burn around them.
@NautArch how many in your party have long bows?

7:15 PM
DX

My kid grabbed my junk just now. It was very alarming.

I'm standing there, talking to goodwife5 and all of a sudden.....

@KorvinStarmast um....none?I think.

@NautArch Not even your battlemaster?

@goodguy5 How old is he? Just mistake, or is he being malicious?

@DavidCoffron 100% happenstance. he's 9 months lol. He was just looking for something to hold onto.... and well, he found something.

babies, man

7:25 PM
They're ridiculous.
Just last night, he slipped trying to grab onto something and hit his chin..... which then chomped down on his tongue. He's only had top teeth for like a month
It must be hard to be a baby.

@KorvinStarmast Definitely not. I've got a 9 dex.

@NautArch I mean... you're allowed to use it.

@goodguy5 Us big humans spit them out too soon. Those dang narrow pelvises and big brains

@goodguy5 i know, i'm just not good at it. I guess I could have one /shrug.

@NautArch Or Javelins.

7:28 PM
@goodguy5 I have a feeling @KorvinStarmast was going for longer range.

@DavidCoffron I've often pondered about what it would be like if we were marsupials.

@goodguy5 do you have one of those baby bjorns?

@NautArch yea, but it's not the same.
Though, he's too big now for most proper "baby bjorn" models
@NautArch I mean, max range on Javelin is 120

ah. NOt sure if you're a hiker at all, but getting one of the hiking backpacks is pretty awesome.

@NautArch We have the non-frame kind, but we like it a lot.

7:31 PM
@goodguy5 the frame kind makes a BIG difference when they start weighing more.

It's a little tricky to keep him warm enough in the winter to comfortably have him back there though

yeah, winter hikes are tough.

@goodguy5 Another benefit to the homo marsupial species ;)

ALthough I guess the difference between javelin at disadvantage and longbow with lower stat is about equal.
didn't really think about that.

likely better than equal, depending on your strength score and the target AC

7:35 PM
@NautArch You can also always throw things. An improvised ranged weapon can still do decent damage with your battlemaster techniques

@DavidCoffron True, although I don't yet have tavern brawler.

Where's that table..... I have an answer on it.
I'm sure Xirema has a better answer or table somewhere, but...

A: Mathematically, is a +2 bonus to AC better than attackers having disadvantage?

goodguy5I think this question is technically a dupe of this question about average outcome, but it's hard to read, so I'll answer again here. Disadvantage is worth more than a bonus of 2 (usually) On average, disadvantage (or advantage) is worth about a five-point difference on the die roll. Five is mo...

@goodguy5 bit trickier with our variable proficiency die

Q: Are these homebrew attempts at recreating the Isaac's Missile Storm spells from NWN2 balanced for 5e?

NathanSIn the Neverwinter Nights video game series (I'm more familiar with NWN2 specifically, which was based on D&D 3.5e), there were two spells, "Isaac's Lesser Missile Storm" and "Isaac's Greater Missile Storm". They were both (as I understand it) basically bigger, better magic missile, but with rand...

@NautArch and a +3 proficiency. You can launch two arrows from 150' per round. +2 total to die roll. Bugbears do not have a super high AC.

7:43 PM
@NautArch only very mildly. Makes your average value proficiency +.5

You can start picking a few off from range and get their attention off of the caravan, perhaps?

@KorvinStarmast unfortunately, we need to be careful about our intelligent plans. 'cause we're not smart men.
but that makes general sense.
most of us aren't that stupid :P

@NautArch Well, I am just spitballing here. I'd need to look at the party in detail, and the situation, to suggest an effective strat.
METT-T.

@KorvinStarmast ?

the only other thing is if you guys use critical fails
If you do, then go for the bow over disadvantage

7:48 PM
@goodguy5 we do :/
yeah, i'm gonna grab a bow.

oh yea... bow it up

@Yuuki I think I love it...

Even though it's a magpie photoshopped with a killer whale, I'm gonna call it an "orcanary".

Better than Killer Whagpie.

7:54 PM
It has echolocation!

oh yea, I guess it would

8:28 PM
terrifying

@Yuuki And it's prey

8:45 PM
@NautArch Paraseal?

@Yuuki Not to be confused with an orthoseal or a metaseal

9:35 PM

oh god

9:55 PM
Eh? Says Image not found.

10:16 PM
@Akira_Kurusu It might be your network blocks imgur.

Oh yeah that's definitely possible

user15026
@Yuuki yes but super no thanks

11:20 PM
@NautArch METT-T = Mission, Equipment, Terrain, Troops and Time. Military term used when doing an assessment of what you can do tactically, etc. If you have seen A Princess Bride, before they stormed the castle, you can say that Westley went through that process very quickly, which is when the Holocaust cloak was produced. :-)
@goodguy5 It's heckel and Jeckel's cousin, Orckel
