12:00 AM
@Ash I don't think I ever read as fast as I think you do but I used to read pretty fast
Either that or I lost major track of time while reading
Not really sure honestly

user15026
Maybe both :)

It's entirely possible
I wish reading grabbed me the same way now as it used to
I think among other things I've become a little More picky about the material

Read Murderbot! And for something every different I could loan you Neither Wolf Nor Dog.
And, you know. Try Broken Earth and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and Trail of Lightning and Clockwork Boys and Binti and...

Lol
I really want to try an unkindness of ghosts

Oh, yes. I keep having to take breaks because it's kind of intense.

12:09 AM
I might just end up tearing through that
Just because of the promise of something I didn't even know I was missing
The topic is pretty heavy though to be fair
Slavery is bad enough, but adding in,... Discrimination based off of not only race but sex, neuroatypicality, and whatever I've missed,....
Or just don't Know yet because it's not in the premise

I haven't gotten to anything "more" than that yet, but the depiction is brutally unflinching, in large part because it's so sympathetic.

But for me, those things might draw me in as much as they repel, and the promise of the protagonist in it is a big thing for me
@BESW sympathetic to whom?
Or is that sort of spoiler territory?

The targets. In part because a sympathetic portrayal of people who are marginalized and violently discriminated against, must also include helping us understand why marginalized people so often also discriminate against each other.

@BESW ok
I asked because I didn't know if you meant it was sympathetic to,.. the oppressors
Like not in a necessarily justification way but in a,... I don't know like understanding that they don't Know better or something
I know that's a strange angle to take from the limited information but I just wanted to double check

Not yet? But I kind of suspect that it's going to come down with a moral along the lines of "if we write off monstrous actions as simply the actions of monsters, we'll never fix anything."

12:23 AM
Yeah I mean

But maybe I've just been reading too much Jemisin lately.

I don't mean to imply they deserve no sympathy but
I think they deserve it second at best

One of her constant themes is that ANYONE can turn to monstrous actions, and pretending only monstrous people can do monstrous things is the first step toward becoming monstrous ourselves because we won't be watching our own behavior.
Oh, for non-fiction I'd recommend, in addition to Neither Wolf Nor Dog, try Hidden Figures. It was a great read.
So much more complex than the film.

I don't feel entirely generous towards people who would treat me badly due to my differences, and it doesn't really make it better just because there are other things they discriminate based on than the one that hits me in particular
@BESW ooh the NASA ladies who did most of the math and didn't get credit for it right?

Yup.
@trogdor Some things are unforgivable, yeah. Just, we need to still see them as human or we'll be in danger of doing unforgiveable things too.

12:28 AM
@BESW I wasn't coming from that angle in particular but yes
I think there is definitely a limit to what I could forgive Even assuming I could still buy into that moral concept if I was the victim of something that bad

@trogdor The book covers more people than the movie did, in more detail and with a lot more nuance. The film does a bunch of typical Hollywood stuff like "squash decades into months" and "replace systemic racism with a few nasty individuals," and its scope is just too small to talk meaningfully about how massively influential the space race was on the black community's upward mobility.

Currently I have the luxury of not being the victim of literally unforgivable stuff
Though that doesn't mean it's easy to forgive everything
I definitely struggle with that a lot

I think that's something everybody works on their entire lives.

Seems like a fair assumption
I do think I take offense at,... Different things than most people though
And then when people are oblivious to that it stresses me out

12:43 AM
I'm trying to learn to express my frustrations early and clearly, which helps a lot in keeping them from becoming Actual Problems.

The thing is, for some people I know, I learned early that they take even a diplomatic approach very personally

Yuuup.

I don't feel like I can even attempt to talk to them about it

I'm also practicing letting other peoples' problems be their problems, and focus on doing my best to behave like the person I want to be.

@BESW that's very hard to do for me
Also, sometimes they make it my problem

12:48 AM
[nods like a bobblehead]

Or at least try very hard to
X(
Family is especially bad for that
People who you care about and are stuck with are not the best combo for these problems

I know someone who says "Family knows where all your sore spots are."

Mm
I'm not sure they conciously Know
But they definitely Know how to step all over them

user15026
1:06 AM
@BESW hidden figures was so good. The movie was decent but the book does them so much more justice.

user15026
I want to read an unkindness of ghosts but I think it will destroy me

On the other hand, the film had Janelle Monáe.

user15026
Which I will never say no to.

user15026
Janelle is awesome

1:26 AM
@Ash tis fair, no need to subject yourself to something that seems like too much for you

user15026
Sometimes I like teh challenge of reading a hard thing but right now, I think it is mostly romance novels and fluff that I need more. Perhaps someday, tohugh

I just reslish a book attempt with a sci fi story trying to tackle what it tries to tackle
Most especially an autistic point of view protagonist
There are other books I can look at for that but an unkindness of ghosts is the one that I am most interested in checking out right now

1:48 AM
@Shalvenay whoops, looks like I was afk and missed you. sorry.

3:29 AM
... Am I the only one who finds the "validate this pregen's spell list" questions a bit weird?
I mean, it seems the easiest part about that validation is counting spells; the more tedious part should be verifying the spells are all of the proper level/class.

1 hour later…
4:33 AM
@JoelHarmon I can assure you that you're not the only one who finds them weird. The reason I find the tools useful though (and why I've been making those posts) is that I tend to work with tools that very quickly lookup Spell Level/Class restrictions, but virtually none of my tools know how to validate "uhm, a level 10 Sorcerer can't have 5 5th level spells!"

Ben
Aftermoon
Ehm… yes.

It's also just a kind of unintuitive answer. If I'm trying to plan out a character, I want to be able to at-a-glance know what kind of power level I can give my character.
Also, for the midnight crowd: I created a google docs of the charts for each of the 8 "Memorized Spellcaster" classes that 5e features: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/…
I'll be using that as I make those posts later on, so if there's any mistakes in there, it might be good to call them out.

Ben
@Xirema The one thing I need is a method of listing off my spells for the Druid class. They (can) change daily so it's a matter of rubbing them out, then listing them down again. Could just put tape on the character sheet and a fine-tip pen, would make it easier
The other thing they need is a "Feats" section. They do have a couple on the character sheets, but for someone like me - I like to list down the descriptions as well (so we don't have to remember/refer to the rulebook each time)… and it fills up fact. Again can just use the back of the sheet... But I like to stick to the format haha

5:13 AM
@Ben oh yeah I've had that Same issue
Pretty much any character sheet that doesn't give space to the stuff with meaty description annoys me

Ben
Pet peeves haha

Yes
XD

5:56 AM
@trogdor The biggest credit for my good relationship with my parents goes to "being socially clumsy enough to not understand passive aggressive remarks before being mature enough to love them regardless" :)

6:12 AM
@Xirema minor pet peeve: why did you leave empty the first column and row? I feel wrong looking at them being unused :P
(I guess because you like how it looks if you do it like this)

6:22 AM
@kviiri mm the thing that tests me the most is when they blatantly ignore the social lessons they took pains to teach me
It doesn't mean I hate them, but it does rile me up something fierce sometimes
But on the other hand I also have them to thank for those lessons in the first place

6:48 AM
It was quite the cultural shock when I met my SO's family for the first time. My parents always were about overt correctness, so pretty much everything flew if it was tactful in overt tone. Which often meant condescending passive aggressive remarks.
Her family otoh is all about correctness of intent. Chewing someone out with strong language is a sign of trust and affection as long as the reason is valid.

Ben
My biggest problem currently is actually my housemate. He berates his daughter for everything "You're doing it wrong... Go back and do it again, properly... What did I ask you to do... You didn't do what I asked..." almost constantly. HIs favourite word is "No."
I want to step in, but my issues is that I only see what goes on 2 hours in the day - 6-8pm
So I don't have the full picture

Where her family is from, the customary greeting for a friend one hasn't seen in a while translates roughly as "wait, you're still alive too!?"
The riffing is stereotypically a part of the regional culture :)

Ben
7:06 AM
They sound either Irish/Scottish, Cockney British, or Australian. Haha
I wonder if that's coincidental... :P

Probably not all that coincidental. They're from Pori which has a very industrial history like Cockneys and lots of maritime influences like Australia
I don't know enough about Irish or Scottish culture to comment on that, although I do recall hearing something about there being surprisingly many Irish sailors back in the age of sail

8:06 AM
@Ben jeez that's not great

Ben
Not particularly. He says he's not always like that (I.e the rest of the day), and if it is just how it is at the end of the day, then fine I guess. Everyone's tired, bedtime all that.
But still

8:22 AM
@Ben There are certainly some days I've been happy just to get to the end of the day without swearing at the kids. (I've long since given up on the goal of not swearing around the kids.)

8:39 AM
@Ben yeah, but still is how I will leave it
I feel like condemning the guy but I have never met him and have no way of knowing how true that is
I will say that even assuming full truth in that,... that's still not something I can condone,... constant no no no do that over do that over would suck to get from your parent all the time
if I was subject to that as a kid,... I don't know just how it would have changed who I have turned out to be

3 hours later…
11:26 AM
@Xirema I believe you. I just strongly tend to prefer books over online resources, to the point that my computer has a current stack of 11 manuals next to it which I use to answer questions rather than looking stuff up online. It's certainly my own bias, and I didn't intend to offend anyone based on their choice of tools.
@Ben Get three index cards and label them "offense", "defense", and "utility". Split your spells per level in half, and fill in that number on each card. Then simply have two of these out at a time. Round down for odd numbers, and use those single slots to customize your day to day.
@Xirema I find this a bit weird. If you've traded away all your level 1 slots, you can't use them to cast spells anymore (sorcerer and paladin have other uses for them). I suppose I don't typically see a given level down by more than one or two spells known.

1 hour later…
12:57 PM
I love the pseudo-hysics question about 12 daggers, 12 chains, and one lightning bolt. It reminds me of some of the hacks we tried back in the old days, just after electricity was invented. :)

@KorvinStarmast I honestly wasn't sure at first about the duping.

1:53 PM
@NautArch I'm honestly still dubious about it. That seems like a classic different question same answer case.

@Rubiksmoose Kindasorta. It means that every creative spell question becomes it's own with a No, this isn't possible and here's a way to think about it.
Which may be fine, but incredibly repetitive.

@NautArch But for what definition of "creative"?

@Rubiksmoose using a spell in an unintended manner that RAW shouldn't work at all?

Arguably we have a lot of creative uses that are either valid or blatantly against the way the spell is written.

I wouldn't be against reopening and answer if that's the community's preference. It's basically a copypasta with replacing some words (especially in this case)
but the upvotes on the comment suggest my dupe thought may be in community agreement

1:56 PM
@NautArch I'm just not sure
I'm not saying its wrong perse, but it feels off to me.

@Rubiksmoose not sure if it's a copypasta or not sure about reopening?

@NautArch reopening.

@Rubiksmoose yeah, i'm with you it feeling a bit off.
It just seems silly to address every possible creative use that is outside spell parameters.
but not unreasonable

Yeah I'm with you.

I"ll let the community respond. if they want to reopen, I'll put up an answer.

2:00 PM
I don't necessarily think it is silly to address each individual case anew, but I certainly think it is not unreasonable on tis face to dupe it.

What Q are you guys talking about?

Be back in a bit btw. Japanese class calls.

Q: Electrified chains?

SacredsynnI had an idea, where a party of 6 total PCs each had 2 daggers with long metal chains affixed to them. They stick the daggers into a creature. They bundle up the chains and then had a lightning spell cast on them Would the spells damage spread through each chain? The idea is that for each d...

@NautArch Ah. I just dont think the stack is a great environment for that. Maybe I'm feeling less forgiving today but stuff like that I just want to say to the DM "Do you want to allow it? then do it. Otherwise don't. Obviously the game rules dont say you can do that"
which i guess is sort of what the linked dupe says in so many words

2:27 PM
@SirCinnamon My issue is that for something to be marked as a dup, the questions need to be duplicates, not the answers. We have a whole mass of questions on the site that all have roughly the same answer - 'talk to your GM'. That doesn't mean that they should all be marked as dups of each other. If we go down that route, we'll end up with a smaller number of extremely generic catch-all answers, with no ability for questions to get specific advice on their individual circumstances

@Wibbs Well theres the double problem of "The title question is the same but the body question isnt"
"Is there a rule for how to handle creative use of spells? " does describe the one marked duplicate

@SirCinnamon then it shouldn't be marked as a dup, but unclear

even if the body asks about a specific creative use
I mean the original has that issue

if title and body are different the close reason should be unclear, and not dup.

Not the one marked duplicate
the one that it is a duplicate of
and that one actually is more of a general question, it ends with "Is there any rule for these situations? I want to reward creativity without unbalancing spells that are meant for single-target use."
which does cover the newer question

2:30 PM
but that's not the question being asked. The question being asked is specific to the querent's situation.
It may have the same answer, but the question is specific and different

But if your specific question is a subset of a more general question, and the answer is the same its still a dup

nope
my understanding is that for something to be marked as a dup, the question has to be the duplicate, not the answer

"What roll is it to jump across a gap" vs "What roll is it to jump across a gap as a gnome"
Just because the second is more specific, the answer is the same and the question is contained by the original
so its a dup

so its ok to have a general question 'what do I do if I disagree with the GM' and the answer 'talk to the players and then the GM', and then every other specific situation someone asks about at the table that could have specific advice is a duplicate of it?

@Wibbs If it doesnt functionally change the answer then sure

2:34 PM
then we fundamentally disagree

if its asking "what do I do if I disagree with the GM" and all the extraneous info doesnt actually impact the answer of "talk to the players and then the GM" then what would make it not a duplicate
Its the same as marking a question like "How do I handle sleight of hand checks" as a duplicate of "How do i handle skill checks"

2:50 PM
Every time I read this line, I crack up:
> "How long was I asleep?"
> "Hmm... about an inch longer than when you are awake."

3:13 PM
@SirCinnamon but there is no way for a new player to know if being a gnome changes the roll
Perhaps the question could be rephrased but I don't think it's fair to use general questions as duplicate targets for highly specific ones.
The question could just ask: "is this considered a creative use of a spell? If not, what to do?"
Then it's virtually the same, but becomes needlessly pedantic

3:54 PM
@SirCinnamon To be clear, sometimes we don't know off the bat if something is going to be a duplicate until we've had a chance to ponder and maybe answer it. In cases like these they are often closed after some answer come in and determine that the gnome doesn't change the distance you can jump for example.
@DavidCoffron I disagree there are many instances of general questions being valid and helpful cases of "more specific" questions. It simply comes down to determining if the specifics of a question change the situation at all.

@Rubiksmoose sometimes but using a broad brush to cover all cases is a bad idea

@DavidCoffron Sure, each case should be handled individually. There is nothing wrong with a very general Q&A that happens to cover other questions though.

I'm not saying mark everything that the general case might cover as a dupe instantly
But I think the community has figured that this question is a dupe with that reasoning and i dont disagree

By marking something as a duplicate we are making the determination that the questions are the same in every way that matters to an answer.

@Rubiksmoose I still think it would be better to leave answers like this "there are no specific rules for your scenario, refer to this question for X"
Because marking as a duplicate more liberally can cause confusion in new players

4:05 PM
@DavidCoffron I'm definitely leaning that way in this case myself for the record.

I'm still unsure as to the dupe-listing but the community so far seems to agree with it. And the title of that question was about creative use. Subset questions do tend to get listed as dupes over general that answer it.
@Wibbs I think this is an issue we often have where Title question and body questions don't always jive. But even thought they had a specific example in their body, the end question was "Is there any rule for these situations? I want to reward creativity without unbalancing spells that are meant for single-target use."
And the Chain question therefore is a duplicate of question and answer.

@DavidCoffron Does that reasoning prevent it from being a dupe though?

4:32 PM
@NautArch As the asker has not yet returned to engage again and clarify, at this point we just wait and see if they are enough to improve or change the question.

@KorvinStarmast I"d still like to feel better about my closure :)
and to answer your comment. the spell effect is only creatures in it's line. Creatures outside the line aren't affected.

I think this is definitely meta-worthy of for no other reason than to start this discussion about general closures which there seems to be conflicting opinions on.

I meant this specific case.
Not a general question

@Rubiksmoose right, but the question about how generally to look at it is there for some guidance

4:48 PM
Oh for sure. We seem to be disagreeing on how to apply that guidance though.

and answers the question about general closures specifically
I don't think i'm disagreeing other than having closed it. But I:ve been pretty open about being unsure about it.

It does indeed. But it doesn't address whether this case is different enough of a question to not count as the same question.

@NautArch I do not dispute your closure initiative; I think your judgment is good as it's more of a "forum" type discussion question than a stackable one. All creatures in a 5' x 100' line is an area of effect spell (or a line of effect if you are gridbound)

I'm not saying you shouldn't have closed it either for the record. Very close call. It's just that there seems to be some disagreement is all.
I mean heck I created a general question and closed a bunch of questions to it. So I've done the same.

definitely worth a meta

Q: Can I trigger an Opportunity Attack by forcing an opponent to move out of my reach?

RubiksmooseIf I cause an opponent to leave my reach with an ability, spell, or effect can I use my reaction to take an Opportunity Attack against them?

That is the biggest one I've done fwiw.

@Rubiksmoose i remember that ;) but that was also an attempt to MAKE a canonical umbrella question rather than one naturally occurring. not sure if that's actually a difference maker, though.

Not a differentiating factor in my opinion.

@Rubiksmoose well, that's like, your opinion man.
:P

5:17 PM
@NathanSantee Whatever your hands can hold, which is typically a heck of a lot less volume than using a container. Do you understand the difference between volume and weight? If you are carrying all 20 arrows with your hands, how do you hold, draw, and shoot the bow? Answer is You Don't. Therefore, you use containers to hold things that you will need, which frees your hands to do the things that you need to do. — KorvinStarmast 29 mins ago
@KorvinStarmast answer is (in my world): you awkwardly squeeze the now-mussed bundle of arrows between your left bicep and ribs, hold the bow in left hand with arm only half-extended, nock and draw with your right, and get off a crappy half-strength shot.
Clearly =D
(Maybe quarter-strength shot--haven't done the math.)
Of course, that-all's just my opinion, man =)

@nitsua60 The encumbrance variant is somewhat at odds with the starting equipment set up (which fits well with the 15x strength basic rule) as we have discussed in TofA sessions.

Obviously it's expected that they hold the other arrows between their teeth

@nitsua60 I like the visual you did there. giggle

@KorvinStarmast It's the rations and torches, man. What a waste. (Lembas and a vial of moonlight ftw!)

I wonder if Nathan is a video gamer running into his first D&D experience.
@nitsua60 Or have a ranger who can forage food. That way, fewer additives in the food. (Have you seen the additives list in Lembas? 8^O I mean, what is q'slervill'gbushna habg'lutimadh anyway? )
Reopen Votes requested here

@KorvinStarmast Ok, I cast Reopen on it

@MikeQ I'm VTC :P

@NautArch I vote to delete!

@doppelgreener A while ago you mentioned using the Fate system to run a JoJo-esque game. Did that happen? And if so, what adjustments were needed for things like Stands, or characters being able to win by out-explaining each other?

@Rubiksmoose don't delete me!

@Rubiksmoose I vote to make it into the new pope!

5:38 PM
@NautArch Well since you asked so nicely I won't. This time.
@Xirema What color is the smoke it gives off?

@Xirema What, did Francis just die?

@KorvinStarmast He prefers to be called Psycho. Oh, wait. Wrong Francis.

@KorvinStarmast AFAIK, he's doing fine, aside from his inability (like all popes) to adequately respond to and correct for the problems of the Church.

@NautArch Ok, glad to hear that. Bill Murray must be proud. @Xirema Heh, I'll not comment further beyond "he was doing so well until he'd been in office for about a week ... " so it goes.

@MikeQ I will check with my friend.

5:51 PM
@MikeQ The most important thing is that everyone must be named after a band though. Definitely needs to be added to the rules.

@MikeQ Alas, they did not wind up actually playing it through. IIRC they got into Blades in the Dark as an introductory game (BitD is a superb introductory game) and then things happened so they didn't wind up moving on to other stuff.

How do you make a tag a synonym?
I want to suggest that and be linked to main-tag
Actually, scratch that. Only about 50% of the 11 posts using the use it in that context.

@Axoren bring it up as a meta question
Here's an example of how it's been done in the past
4
Q: Is the 'weapon' tag a synonym of the 'weapons' tag?

A Very Large BearThe weapon tag is not currently a synonym of the weapons tag. The tag synonym guidelines state that If you know of common, alternate spellings or phrasings for [a] tag, add them here so we can automatically correct them in the future. For example, suggest “bike” as a synonym for bicycle, or “...

I'll think about what should be done about the weight tag over the course of the afternoon and come back to it

@DavidCoffron I am not sure what problem Nathan is trying to solve, but at this point I will sit back and just let this be entertaining.

And then I'll make a request on meta
@KorvinStarmast he wants to know what's stopping him from balancing his entire inventory on his head until Level 20.

0
Q: What's required to create a tag synonym?

SirTechSpecI just created hoard-of-the-dragon-queen and think it would be a very good idea to add a synonym hotdq, considering how common that abbreviation is. However, when I go to suggest it, I'm told I need 5 score in that tag before I can suggest synonyms. That's fine, but... do I not already have 5 sco...

Also, apparently if you have enough score in a tag you can suggest synonyms as well

6:42 PM
To be fair, I don't think there's anything stopping him from walking around like a rushed-out-of-bed Man-at-Arms, like he's described.

"Users with more than 2500 reputation and a total answer score of 5 or more on the tag, can suggest tag synonyms. Users with a total answer score (total upvotes minus total downvotes) of 5 or more on the tag, can vote for tag synonyms. Suggestions will be automatically approved when they reach a score of 4, and automatically deleted when they reach a score of -2."
@Axoren other than maybe his GM

For all intents and purposes, it's not any harder to pull an arrow out from between your toes than it is to retrieve it from inside a bag.
Whether or not it's as easy as pulling from a quiver is another story.

@DavidCoffron The wording on the top answer suggests that if you put a little pouch between your toes, it acts like a quiver.
So, that settles it. Nathan's character needs at least one container, in between his toes :P

7:04 PM
@Axoren I tried to ask him to join the chat.

helloooo

Nathan seems to be engaging so I'm going to throw an upvote their way for chat-rep.

@nitsua60 he already has 42. I think that's enough rep, no?
@dot_Sp0T howdy!

how are thingies?
@NautArch ho

@nitsua60 good idea to invite them

7:12 PM
in Discussion on answer by KRyan: What's the point of quivers?, 5 mins ago, by Nathan Santee
the only one i have left is how much gear I can have without containers.

@NautArch <facepalm> derp. Saw the "new contributor" signifier, saw +1/0 on the post, assumed they'd need 14 more =\

I think we can reopen with an edit based on this No?

I don't think so
Could you clarify your actual problem here? You ask what you can hold without any containers or what's the point... but I think your question both illustrates what you can hold and what the point is, and it looks like you're fully aware of both of those things: "So you can hold all that sure but you can't do anything." So what problem is left over here? What's your difficulty or point of confusion? — doppelgreener ♦ 28 mins ago
if i don't have a backpack, quiver, chest, mount, or any container, how much stuff can I have assuming the weight limit isn't a problem? — Nathan Santee 18 mins ago
their question is currently obviously already answering itself
they want to know a straightforward thing but their question is not asking that thing at all

@doppelgreener But they DO have a backpack.
It's in the explorer's pack.
agreed that they need clarify their question.

@NautArch i assume they either have no idea this is the case or they are discarding it

7:15 PM
@doppelgreener They went with the assumption "it comes full".

@doppelgreener they said that that's backpack is already full

So they're counting the backpack as part of their carrying, but not as a means to add anything else to it.

@doppelgreener It's safe to say that they are discarding it in this artificial scenario.
I think they want to know about the hypothetical situation.

@NautArch but then they've got containers and a backpack, which this scenario is about not having, so they don't have that

This would also be a problem if the player rolled for wealth and ended up too poor for their standard kit AND an explorer's pack/backpack

7:16 PM
@Axoren But their hypothetical situation includes it,. We can delete the explorer's pack from the equation or they can take everything out of the explorer's pack and discard the backpack.

Honestly from my POV we've invested a lot of energy in them and it's on them to figure out how to not ask nonsense
and to figure out how to use our system at all, including editing the question

@doppelgreener Yup, and I hope they hop in here so we can help.

we like to fix & help people but be mindful of where our energy is being spent and be mindful of the power of just letting someone work something out for themselves for a few hours

But it's feeling very rant-like right now.

RIP. Another rallying answer I've given is gonna stop at about 70 votes
Popular Answer seems really hard to get

7:23 PM
@NautArch it does but I don't know why. Frustrated by the lack of rules?

Some of my Popular Answers only came a few months later, because you get upvotes trickling through

@Axoren You mean Great Answer?

Whatever the 100 is
Is popular only 50? Or am I getting the name wrong?

I'm pretty sure every now and then someone looks at my profile, sees my top handful of answers, and upvotes a couple of them.

Questions are popular, answers are good

7:25 PM
Nathan's question is close to reopening.

@NautArch still not sure if reopening without a clarifying edit is a good idea. Lots of weird stuff in the question that seems excess (the rhetorical questions for example)

@DavidCoffron I didn't vote to reopen...just saw the current count
and maybe giving @doppelgreener and @nitsua60 a heads-up.

Oh it was edited
Now it's just a "what is your question" situation

yeah if it gets reopened exactly like this it's also getting re-closed again right away by me
actually i'm going to re-close with the proper reason
There

@Axoren Nice/Good/Great Answer is 10/25/100 (net) score. Popular/Notable/Famous only go to questions with 1000/2500/10K views.

7:47 PM
@nitsua60 my best answers are really weird.

Weird Answer, Bizzare Answer, Gonzo Answer.

@nitsua60 Weird Answer being an answer with 2pi votes?

No, the score has to be a weird number. Holy Moses! The first weird number is 70. Axoren gets a badge!
(You get a badge! You get a badge! You get a badge!)

@nitsua60 I get it twice
I've got two at least Weird answers

7:52 PM
At least I can be proud that my number 1 is "actually useful"

My #2 is more useful than my #1.
My #1 is literally just saying "Warlock NPCs can do whatever they want."
And people LOVED it

@Axoren I wonder if they're weird only for exactly a weird number, not at least a weird number.
brb

To become at least a weird number, you must have at least been a weird number.
So the badge would be awarded and couldn't be taken back.

Some numbers are really weird. I always thought 29 and 37 are particularly fishy.
26 is also a sly devil, because it looks like a nice number with lots of divisors while actually it's just 2*13.

60 is pretty weird. It is often prefaced with letters of all things! Usually I, S, U, A, T, and N in some order.

Ustain

@DavidCoffron I just put up a related Q&A on that carrying question. Do you think it's a dupe?

8:34 PM
@NautArch uh... which one?

@DavidCoffron dis one

Oh. I thought you meant you asked a question. Umm... Maybe. It's still unclear exactly what the OP is asking
It very well could be but I don't think "what is the maximum number of objects I can carry without containers?" would be a direct dupe
Which I don't think is what the OP is asking but it could be
Also... this:

@DavidCoffron my paladin looks al ot like that

Insert here that bit about where Solid Snake keeps his guns.
(in MGS 1, he doesn't carry around any sort of backpack or even a bandolier, but still has a couple of crates' worth of specialty gear and weaponry)

hello

8:41 PM
@kviiri Why do you think his butt was so big in Smash Bros?

a question on reach melee weapons (glaive). Reach allows 10 ft attack distance. Can he still attack an enemy that is 5 ft away?

@kviiri MGSV is a little bit better about only letting you have three weapons (plus upgrades for your hand) and they're all visible on your person. But Snake still packs a bunch of equipment who knows where (night goggles, several fulton devices, numerous cardboard boxes...)

@NautArch @DavidCoffron The comments are getting way too conversational, so I've linked Nathan to chat
Otherwise, the comment replies are going to be all over the place, like super-imposed games of ping pong.

@ravery System?

D&D 5e

8:44 PM
@Yuuki Fan service

@ravery In that case, you can still attack an enemy next to you.
IIRC, there's a rule in Pathfinder than you need to spend a move action or something to adjust your grip to attack something close with a reach weapon.
But that's not the case in 5e.

@Yuuki I think the "less is more" approach of later MGS titles regarding carrying weapons is rather nice. Especially with camouflage! I don't know who thought the MGS 3 style of camouflage was good idea, since it's both tedious AND unrealistic.

@ravery If I recall correctly, only certain polearms have a restriction on attacking within 5 ft.
Only the Lance has that property as far as I'm aware.
However, even still, you can attack within 5 ft. with the Lance
It's just harder to hit

For Pathfinder, it's a default rule for all reach weapons that they can't attack adjacent combatants.
But there's no such general restriction for 5e.

Like, usually one gets tedious stuff in video games because some game dev looks at a game and says "hey, wouldn't it be cool if <tedious thing> just like in real life?" and then does it because they didn't stop to think if they should

8:47 PM
Thanks, I figured chocking up on the handle would be allowed.

@kviiri I wish they'd get rid of Running Stamina in towns.
Literally every game does that
How much rep do you need to chat?
Nathan might not have that much.

He does

@Axoren A lot of game design seems to happen based on "others are doing this, so we must too".

@Axoren 20+ rep on any Stack Exchange site to talk in any Stack Exchange chat. (Stack Overflow is a separate system with the same requirements within its sandbox, but SO rep doesn't let you talk in SE chats and vice versa.)

"RPG elements" was a common nuisance of earlier 2000's, and it basically meant "you need to grind some stats!"
Then came the "crafting system", which basically meant "you need to grind some items!"

8:52 PM
@Axoren Monster Hunter World doesn't! Also, you don't consume stamina until you engage with a monster.

@Yuuki Thank god.
I also hate RPGs that make you walk slowly everywhere because muh immersion. Morrowind had it bad, but it was easily mitigatable
Divinity Original Sin series has it notoriously bad, but at least there are some warps.

World's maps are relatively small and each one has a number of camps that you can fast-travel to once you set them up.
I wouldn't really compare it to any traditional RPG though.

I don't talk smack about MHW because I don't play it, but my friends love it.
I think there needs to be some innovation in intra-town travel
