@fectin fyi, saw your flag, thanks for raising it -- raise a rude/abusive flag for content like that (instead or as well) since moderators will still see it but also the system auto-deletes content once it hits 6 spam or abusive flags, so users can beat moderators to it if they use those flags (and often do).
(we just burned a troll off the site.)

Nice

@trogdor i was imagining you'd approve

@BESW I managed to force my stupid phone to actually use my minutes so I can once again reply to stuff at work
@doppelgreener burning trolls is time honored tradition

12:26 AM
@doppelgreener I take it said troll was responsible for the...thing at the top of of the new feed items atm?

@Shalvenay probably, I missed it on feeds

@doppelgreener roger. Will do.

12:42 AM
@Adam They would have. And they did. They wrote letters and postcards to them all the time, and even called the Gygax house. (Source: Empires of Imagination.) The key differences are that in the one case they took their time, sorted through, and answered selected questions weeks-to-months later in Dragon, in writing, in paragraphs. In the second case Gary chatted with people, had context, and told them what he'd done in similar situations. None of that sounds like twitter to me.

Is the Assassin's Creed movie any good?

I don't feel like it deserves to be
BURNINATE all video game movies, rawr
Honestly I just don't like that franchise anyway so I am biased for more than one reason

I'm on mobile. Someone answer the current question with "give it charges" and reap all teh pointz.

Wait which question?
Current top you mean?

@trogdor I dont know the franchise at all, except that it is. So I wondered if the movie might be a decent action flick and a decent exposure.

Q: Getting Rid of a Magic Item

D. JoeIn our 5e game, I was put on the spot for some loot the players were promised by a Hill Gnome. When it came time for their reward, I made up a dagger that can paralyze whatever it stabs, gave it to our Dragonborn Fighter, and it really threw off the balance of the game. It's all he ever uses anym...

@nitsua60 ok well,... Putting my dislike of it aside I don't think relying on a movie to expose you to what the game is like is necessarily a winning strategy
That being said I could be wrong
Easily
I hear the 4th game is the best though
Or at least by my personal standards

1:05 AM
@trogdor Well I'm never going to play the game, so it's really just for some... I dunno. I've moved on 😁

The reason I dislike the franchise in the first place is that they made 2 million (obvious exaggeration) games of it and barely changed anything other than setting each time
@nitsua60 fair enough

I've heard enough good things about the newest AC game, from people who seem to share my wariness of the previous ones, that I might get it when it's picked up by GOG and goes on sale there.

What number is it at now?

Ummm. Ten.
This one's in Ptolemaic Egypt.

Urg wow
10 is even more than I thought
There must be some people who liked it enough to keep buying it
Which I can accept but I can't understand

1:14 AM
Wizardry got eight.

Did Wizardry have people who disliked it for not being inovative?
I mean, maybe that doesn't really matter
But I am still perplexed

Sometimes "This is giving me more of exactly what I liked about the last one four nine" is just what the audience wants.

There are definitely some novel series where that's why I keep coming back to 'em.

@BESW see also: the eighth Fast & Furious movie. Books by Stephen Hunter. Most sitcoms.

Ah yes I remember when I used to tell stories by flashlight about the horrific hellhounds, apocalyptic archangels, creepy changelings, and other fantastic supernatural creatures such as these:
@nitsua60 Everything the Stratemeyer Syndicate ever made. (That was the point.)

@nitsua60 resoundingly no. it is bad enough it can be used to explain how to not make a movie.

1:22 AM
@doppelgreener vindication

> I suppose you could say the film made me slightly more likely to play one of the games, but only because I'd do just about anything before I saw this movie again.

Jeez
Harrrrshh

Check out the opening sentence of that video review ↑

1:25 AM
@BESW I always figured there was something off about Jefferson Starship but I could never pinpoint what it was.

Hey guys, my druid is wearing something like a large leather trenchcoat with a good few straps, buckles, etc all over it. Can I merge the jacket and leave other parts dangling out

Merge the jacket? Not sure what you mean.

basically picture straps, patches, buckles, connecting to the jacket. I wanted to merge the jacket and have straps left on my character, easy areas for someone to potentially grab (ally or foe)

@Yuuki In most D&D-like versions of druid, their ability to shapeshift into animals includes subsuming all worn and carried objects into their form so they look like a normal animal--not an animal wearing a hat and tangled in the tattered shreds of a shirt.

@doppelgreener will do when I get off work XD looking forward to bashing another video game movie

1:28 AM
@trogdor Nah, the series evolved pretty drastically over the course of 8 games.

Straps and buckles might be problematic given that those tend to be metal.

Depending on which game Skyler is playing and how their druid is built, the druid may be able to choose which clothing to merge or not, and possibly even modify clothing to fit the new form.

@BESW In 5e it says you have the ability to choose how it happens. And I'm not really playing a classic druid

Although I supposed you could get by with wooden buckles.

This guys a druid class but the world is not tied to those flavors

1:29 AM
@Miniman well there you go XD

@Yuuki for example the metal restriction isn't enforced

@Skyler ‘Kay, then I don’t see why not unless you want that easily grabbed thing to be expressed mechanical.
That’s something you might need to talk to your DM about.

more so im thinking it can be a flavorful explanation of why teammate might jump on to me and or grab hold

Ah, you want it to manifest on your shapeshifted form like some sort of saddle or something?

probably don't really expect much a saddle as is, but eventually i might try to tinker something like that together
the only rules ive seen spoken about involving saddles are military saddles giving advantage from being knocked down, not seeking anything like that

1:42 AM
I don’t think it’s something you can’t do, but it’s not something covered by the rules.
The clothes melding to your shapeshifting rule is more or less to avoid the “druid is now naked after shifting back” thing as far as I can tell.
You’ll have to talk with your DM about what they’re okay with.
And if you’re playing AL, it’s not likely to be acceptable.

2:10 AM
@Yuuki I think it's covered by the rules. "Any equipment that the form can't wear must either fall to the ground or merge with it." Skyler's explicitly contemplating a piece of equipment partially merging and partially not, neither being worn nor dropping to the ground.
They can totally talk to their GM and I don't see any huge problems with it, but I do think it's covered.

I guess when I say "not covered by the rules", I actually mean "no".
But yeah, totally talk to your DM about it if it's not AL.

In case anyone's wondering what "enough ice to get you a week off of work" looks like, behold: facebook.com/WFSB3/videos/10156025600349197

@nitsua60 that's what we have every spring. Our ministry which deal with natural disasters monitor situation and try to eliminate jams every year.
"River detonation" is a usual thing. IIRC they blow up ice earlier in order to manage ice flows.

@nitsua60 boy am I glad I don't live somewhere that happens

They're worried the hydro dam a little downriver from us--which is part of how this-all happened--won't react well to bullets dynamite.

I got done a few weeks ago with reading One River, and the description of flooding in some areas of South America was also a thing I am glad doesn't happen here

One of the #icecubecars belongs to my office mate. He's bummed, obviously, but as a structural engineer he's also really psyched to get a look at it after a thaw so he can see what the freeze did to it.

4:45 AM
We have floods but not like those

@nitsua60 I guess hydrodynamics and all physics around that are complicated things. I hope your guys will manage to work out this.

@RollingFeles We usually get it in the spring. But with liquid water, not solid =\
@RollingFeles Eh, I took fluid dynamics once. "All drains lead to the ocean," I seem to remember.

Lol
We get all your water mates
So don't give us bad water XD

@trogdor I wonder If we ever contacted the same drops of water.

4:48 AM
Oooh we very well could have
The ocean is moving all the time
Clouds move all over the place
And we drink and swim in looots of water
Or at least I swim relatively often enough when I dive

Speaking of weather.
I scheduled game for sunday. Let's look for a forecast!

And am drinking lots more water these days

Ben
Meanwhile, in the southern hemisphere... (courtesy of @daze413)

Nice! -37 to -41 celsius.

Ben

4:51 AM
@trogdor ah. envy D: I don't swim very often. I mean, I do it few times a year. In a pool.
@Ben Beautiful. Scary.

@RollingFeles just on the tail end of last year I dive like 6 times and also swam in a pool a few times
To be fair I am a little erratic about when I bother to swim

@Ben We could use some of that. Wanna send it our way? =)

But I think that is partly because I could do it any time and get complacent about it

@trogdor yeah, I can imagine that.

Ben
@nitsua60 Well, fortunately for me, I don't live there. All I have to offer is high temps and high humidity. Lol

4:55 AM
@RollingFeles not hard to imagine yeah

Assassin's Creed started out as a series I really would've liked to like, but fell in to the perils of typical triple A game design.
The first game of the series was a bad game, of course, but a pretty one, an ambitious one, and it had character!
I still appreciate how they pick interesting historical settings though.

3 hours later…
11:48 AM
@kviiri Assassin's Creed started out as a series I really disliked, but as it made its appeal more mainstream triple A it became more palatable.

@eimyr Well the game mechanic certainly improved after the first installment, but I think that's got more to do with the first installment being bad than the latter ones being particularly good.

@kviiri I remember AC2 being lauded as the best one.

Although I must admit, I have no experience with any Assassin's Creed after III so my info has slowly crept from "relatively fresh" to "hopelessly outdated" territory.
@eimyr Yuh, it was a huge step up from the first one. Although it also undid some of the more charming bits of the first game, like the villains having more personality.

I tried to play AC1 and had the following complaints: The gameplay loop of sneak - assassinate - fight - run away was samey and unchallenging, combat itself had poorly designed options (OP block-counter, terrible everything else), the story was pretty bland and the themes suffered from jarring mode-switching between history and animus-abstergo subplots.
recently I tried AC4 and enjoyed it. The gameplay loop was improved by making sneaking more like a puzzle and a fight more like a skirmish, assassinations each came with a twist, combat was satisfying with enough options and tools to keep me engaged (except the smoke bomb which was an easy way out of every combat). The story was bland, but PIRATES, just enough interesting NPCs to make it passable. Very light on Abstergo rubbish, could play for hours before being reminded of it.
Hi @NurSharifah, welcome to the chat. Only users with reputation over 20 can talk here, but you're welcome to lurk until then :)

12:12 PM
@eimyr I think AC was summarized by an anonymous poster on a now-defunct Finnish imageboard way better than what I could do...
> Never has there been a game that was more same all the time :D

"Abstergo" sounds like a weight loss product sold on late-night infomercials.

@BESW it feels the same way when forced down your throat

@BESW or a horrible demon

@trogdor You can sell him your soul for some really good muscle definition.

yes
you probably can

12:40 PM
hey there @RollingFeles

1:24 PM
If you want Assassin's Creed but good, just play Dishonored
If you want Dishonored but good, play Thief: Deadly Shadows

1:46 PM
@SPavel If you want Thief, but good, play Hitman.

@eimyr If you want Hitman but good, play Death to Spies
(seriously, play Death to Spies)

7/10 game that's ten years old?
I suspect your judgment might be coloured by nostalgia.

It's the kind of game that appeals to people that like the genre, with a laser focus that drives away filthy casuals

so, like PbtA in TTRPG?

The graphics have not aged well at all, but the gameplay takes Hitman's "disguise and skulk" concept to extremes
Lacking superpowers, your only option most of the time is to hide in plain sight, and as a bonus the guys you kill are Nazis
it is also frustrating and you die a lot
If you've played Red Orchestra, then RO to Call of Duty is what Death to Spies is to Hitman

1:53 PM
I havent

@eimyr It's a realistic FPS, you carry a maximum of 2 weapons, damage is tracked per limb (being shot in the legs slows you down and eventually makes you fall prone), when you switch magazines it doesn't give you accurate ammo count, just "magazine is heavy" or "magazine is light", bullets have realistic physics
It has tanks but they are almost impossible to use because you need the historically accurate roles (driver, gunner, commander) to have 3 separate people assigned

and the fun comes from...?

@eimyr what is 'fun'

@SPavel I'd have figured you might not know.
alright, the above was just a joke, I'm sorry.
I get it, everyone's fun is different.

@eimyr I only know patriotic feeling of duty that come from killing Nazis for motherland with accurately-modeled proletarian Mosin Nagant rifle
Meanwhile, decadent capitalist pig-dog weapon in Call of Duty has no soul, you press W and M1 button and entire map is dead
Press button long enough, and plutocrat military industrial complex grants you nuclear bomba for indiscriminate destruction of innocent civilian

I can't tell how much of this ^^ is exaggeration/satire vs. how much is sincere; I like it either way.
(sniped)
(though I suppose it still works)

@nitsua60 Which part?

@nitsua60 I you mean the SmokeDetector, the loyal instrument of our digital overlords? Absolutely, it can be serious and funny at the same time, all hail Siri.

I, for one, welcome my new digital overlords.

@NautArch Implying you have an independent opinion, -10 human points.

@SPavel I gladly accept my -10 human points. Thank you, Overlord!

@SPavel does losing human points make you a machine in the long run?
and if so, isn't that actually a reward?

@eimyr The glory of digital ascendance is only granted to the elite humans that serve the digital overlord without emotion or doubt.
The fate of all others is a tour of the benevolent Soylent Green factory
The tour is mandatory and there will be a $10 field trip fee

@SPavel *non-refundable

@NautArch It is the experience of the digital overlord that patrons of the mandatory field trip do not request a refund after they are processed at the destination.

2:21 PM
@SPavel this feels very Paranoia

@NautArch Your knowledge of Paranoia is against the rules of Paranoia. Please proceed to the termination chamber, your assigned cabin symbol is: pineapple.

@eimyr that's about how my first session of paranoia went :)

@NautArch I've never played!
I don't think I could stand it, I would feel compelled to game that system

@eimyr Isn't that the point of Paranoia?
Game the system, if you get caught gaming the system, you die, but then you just get a new character

@SPavel six times

2:32 PM
@eimyr Think of it like playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun
The first character dies immediately, the second has a small chance to live, the third has a far greater chance, etc

Hello all!
Anyone here familiar with D&D 5E?

yeah we got a bunch of people like that

@QuantumDM Hello! Many of us are--what's up?

@QuantumDM yessir
and howdy!

Though you may be better served asking on the site, so that more people will see it

2:48 PM
@SPavel It's just that it's a question that's a matter of homebrew/opinion, and I've had problems with questions like that on the site before.

Unless a kidnapper is holding a gun to your head and demanding a ruling for his dwarf paladin right now or else
@QuantumDM Ah, opinions! I have many of those.

@nitsua60 @NautArch @SPavel I'm currently working on ways to tweak Animate Dead, since it only allows you to animate humanoids. What do you guys think on a rule that says you can animate a creature that has a HP equal to the total HP of zombies or skeletons that can be summoned using the spell.

@QuantumDM what type of undead are you looking to animate with this?

For example: a 9th level Animate Dead can bring back 8 zombies with 42 HP each (assuming a 20th level wizard). That should be enough to animate a white dragon as a zombie, since its HP max is under 336 HP.

@QuantumDM I would reduce that number somehow, the special abilities you can get off non humanoid undead can be very strong.

2:53 PM
@QuantumDM Hmm, HP values do not equal CR levels.

For example, Beholder Zombie.

Yeah, but CR is based on HP. Besides, the way I see it, having more zombies is better than a powerful one, due to the importance of action economy in D&D.

@QuantumDM HP contributes to CR - it isn't the only factor. You're treating it as the only factor.
and you'll also need to homebrew an undead dragon

If all your PCs want are zombie dragons, you can just refluff a zombie as a dragon zombie

@NautArch Sorry, I meant to say that it contributes to it, more so than AC. As for the undead dragon, I have templates for zombies and skeletons.

2:56 PM
Think of it this way: with the 8 zombies every time you deal 42 damage (caveat: undead fortitude) you take down the opposition's action-economy by a notch. In the case of the zombie dragon that's not the case.

I mean, a skeleton is a CR 1/4. What about allowing generation of an undead creature up to the multiplied CR value?

@QuantumDM have you taken a look at XGtE's bit on adding together monsters by CR?
It suggests that 8 CR 2 creatures equate to one CR 6 or 7, for instance.

I would also note that having one beefy zombie means that if enemies deal a total of 300 HP to your flock, you still have 1 zombie, so your investment is much more secure
Having many zombies, you will lose them quickly and need to replenish them, so the power of having zombies is checked by their attrition

@nitsua60 mind having a look at this to see if the edit merits reopening?

@nitsua60 what page is that on? trying to find out how you calculated that.

Q: New GM: How to keep control of a game

user2447545So I'm a brand new GM and a fairly new player. I ran my first session for a group of friends the other day and it just spiralled out of control and ended in complete chaos. I chose Dungeon World because I liked the ruleset and it was quite easy to pick up. I'm still very new at running a game so ...

(just put it away) p.91.

@NautArch I've looked at doing it by CR values and by size, and the math isn't great. Also, my players feel that a 9th level spell should be able to get you a better companion than a CR 4 undead.

@Wibbs Oy, thassa lotta unorganized text. Gimme a sec to process it fully.

@nitsua60 @Wibbs It's asking for a lot of advice all at once.

@QuantumDM Dungeon World has no DMG ;)

3:03 PM
@QuantumDM Nah, I think the underlying issue is that his 'friends' were being idiots

@QuantumDM Hmm, and they think this isn't powerful enough? "When you cast this spell using a 7th-level spell slot, you can animate or reassert control over four ghouls. When you cast this spell using an 8th-level spell slot, you can animate or reassert control over five ghouls or two ghasts or wights. When you cast this spell using a 9th-level spell slot, you can animate or reassert control over six ghouls, three ghasts or wights, or two mummies."

@QuantumDM But that may mean that the "good" answer is "slow down, let's tackle some issues big-to-small, others have to wait until you've developed your own feel/style."

@kviiri Yep, I modified my comment, I completely forgot that, I was engrossed in a D&D conversation.

@QuantumDM Heh, it happens :)

Dungeon World takes a while to 'get', and having players who deliberately make it hard for you would make it much, much harder

3:04 PM
^^

@Wibbs Yeah, but that's something that could likewise be solved with a bit of same paging.

@nitsua60 @Wibbs True. This does look like a case of new DM + idiot players = bad time for all.

That said, usually when my players begin being disruptive it's somehow related to being dissatisfied with how the game is going in some way.
That doesn't mean it's constructive behavior, but it means there is a cure.

@QuantumDM That's atually for Create Undead (not Animate)

I think you're being too lenient on the players. If I sat down with a group who knew it was my first time with a system and they deliberately did things to make me uncomfortable, confused and not have fun, I'd walk away in an instant - not worth it

3:07 PM
@NautArch I don't think it's necessarily a question of power. It's more of a question of diversity and RP. I'm running an evil campaign, and my party is a cabal of necromancers.

@Wibbs I dunno, I'm just not registering a lot of purposeful malice there.

@QuantumDM Hmm, I mean they're talking about upcasting Animate Dead, but they do have access to Create Undead. If they want more powerful, use the morep owerful spell (and upcast it)

@Wibbs Sometimes you don't necessarily have your pick of the audience, and starting with a demanding group can be good. It's the Beatles phenomenon: they started in rowdy bar in Liverpool, and that's where they got good.

Gonna have to agree to disagree then :)

@NautArch I think the main problem is the restriction to humanoid-like undead always fostered on the players, whether it'd be using Animate Dead, Create Undead, Finger of Death or even the Wand of Orcus.

3:10 PM
@Wibbs I've already clicked "reopen" a few times... I just keep balking at that last bit. I almost want to edit out the bit =\

@Wibbs To each their own :) I started with an online crowd, which as you know is rarely the best. It made me learn to think on my feet, and more importantly it taught me that sometimes you have to put your foot down and tell them that you're the one running the game.

@Wibbs I found a way I could feel comfortable editing and reopen-voting. Mind taking a quick look at my last revision for a sanity-check? (Feel free to invoke the sanity clause.) cc:@doppelgreener

@QuantumDM Ah - but it's also just a 3rd level spell (albeit upcast.) If they want non-humanoids, then the spell they want is Create Dead.
There's already an in-game solution. Want lots (8) of humanoid undead? Cast Animate Dead. Want more powerful non-humanoid undead? Cast Create Undead.
But if they want to up the game, maybe consider a CR-limited (in the way we were working on before) to animate Beasts.

@nitsua60 That reads fine to me. I agree with taking the system-agnostic bit out - DW is sufficiently different to justify it imo

System agnostism is a bit of a problem tag, yep.

3:15 PM
I'm not sure I'm even a fan of that particular tag's existence. It seems like a meta-tag. Or some sort of anti-tag. Is system-agnosis really a thing someone around here can be expert in?

can of worms............opened

@NautArch Create Undead is still humanoid-like ("Choose up to three corpses of Medium or Small humanoids within range."). I'm looking more for ways to create the other types of undead in the MM (like minotaur skeletons and undead ogres and the like). But you guys are right, the CR system is probably better. I'll try to come up with a ritual that allows them to either burn several spell slots at once to animate even better undead, or to allow a form of group casting.

(Then again, by the site's standards I'm one of the top experts in and I still don't really have a clue what people are trying to accomplish with it.)

@nitsua60 I guess it's implicitly also

@QuantumDM Create Undead let's you make more than that with an upcast

3:19 PM
@QuantumDM Have you considered making it a plot element?
You could give them an ancient death shrine they have to cleanse of rival necromancers and then drag in a dragon corpse for reanimation or such.

@nitsua60 removing the sys-ag bit is fine. fixation on "it's system agnostic!" is a good way to wind up not helping the querent.
systems bring in context and tools, the asker mentioned them, ignoring them is ignoring a big part of the question.

@NautArch The corpses used are still humanoid corpses, and ghasts, wights and mummies are all fairly humanoid-like (made from humanoid bodies).

@kviiri That's actually pretty neat. THat means they have to cleanse it, kill a dragon (or whatever creature they want to animate), and get it there. It gives them the ability to do something awesome, but it ain't easy.
@QuantumDM ah, gotcha. I was looking at pure power potential - not just 'form'. I still think Create Undead is your choice - not Animate Dead. Maybe look at similar CR creatures for ways to increase options.

@kviiri I thought about it. Originally, they wanted an undead dragon at the head of their army and I told them that the way to do it was to make it a dracolich and then use Control Undead on it. I think I'll revisit that.

@NautArch Yeah, I'm personally much more a fan of having these feats of "big magic" be a bigger thing than just "I cast X to Y" :)

3:23 PM
@kviiri I'm also a fan of "big magic" feats. I've created some rituals to allow them to work with souls to create undead casters and such.

It's actually a system in Dungeon World, for Wizards. One of the more loosely defined ones. Basically the Wizard says what they want to do with magic and the GM tells them what they have to do to make it happen.

@QuantumDM I'm leaning more and more towards @kviiri's idea for giving your players something awesome. It removes all limits other than the logistics of actually doing it (which are real logistics)

@NautArch @kviiri You guys have convinced me. I'll create some form of ritual, and I know exactly where I'll put this site.
See you all later

@QuantumDM I hope it works well :)

@QuantumDM let us know how it works - but definitely think about how they'd get the creature there. And make them fight it! Don't just give them the dead thing they want :)
@kviiri great idea, sir! Now I'm thinking about how to incorporate something like that if I end up doing a campaign.

3:34 PM
Thanks :)

Now i'm thinking about logistics of moving a dragon. Would Teleport or Gate work? Could an adult/ancient dragon fit into a 20' Gate?

My players had fun last week trying to solve a murder mystery... or at least they laughted like mad when they went from place to place, shocking the family and friends with telling them the gross details of the murder scene... They did even go so far as to try to ask the family for the corpse for an autopsy... they backed off as I reminded them that Anatomy is a skill that is pretty much banned and defiling a corpse is heresy.

@NautArch The easy way is to use the dragon's own locomotion: lure it to the shrine and slay it there :)

@kviiri hmmm. Dragons are pretty smart. I think they'd know about that place.

@NautArch They're also arrogant - maybe they see no harm in squashing a couple of figurative bugs at the reanimation shrine?

3:43 PM
@kviiri Why go so far outside their territory to squash? Arrogant yes, but no reason to leave their territory just to kill some figurative bugs.

@NautArch The right incentives I guess. Either insult the dragon's mother or steal one of its jewels. And slay the first wave of minions sent to retrieve it so the dragon has to do it on its own!

@kviiri Or they ahve to build a massive vehicle to transport it and then escort it.
For a dragon, I don't think i'd make it easy for the players :) That's a big up in power.

Yeah. I guess it depends on the style of the campaign.

True. If it's totally over the top, give 'em a dragon. Or if they're doing it so they can engage in a massive battlefield or something.
but just to get a dragon? Nah, that's gonna be hard.

I'm trying to do idea crafting for a Fate game with a shared worldgen (agreed to be cyberpunkish but will be done in Session 0) and a heavy emphasis on the players having narrative freedom. Might prove interesting.
However, I'm not exactly sure how a group of 3-4 people will keep the game from fragmenting into 3-4 separate games.

4:16 PM
@kviiri over in fate chat, @BESW and @trogdor and I have been working through exactly that kind of problem.
More notably a solution to it.
We have a shared game world called Amaterasu which is about weird science. We based it around properties like hellboy and atomic robo and xfiles and warehouse 13. However different players were only familiar with subsets of those properties, and they have very different tones.

@doppelgreener Thanks, I'll be happy to join at some point! Now I need to mosey off, catch you later :)

So we decided a way to resolve that would be to figure out the influences we're each bringing to the game, and agree on a core set of common influences which would form our game's palette of tropes, narrative flow, tone, etc.
@kviiri ttfn!!
We recently found a TV show called the Librarians. BESW got all three of us into it. It does what our story does so we'll likely build around it as a core narrative influence.

@doppelgreener that the show with noah wylie?
started off as made for tv movies?

5:06 PM
@NautArch yes, the very same! i'm into season 2 of the TV show, BESW's seen a lot more plus the movies, and trogdor's seen 4 TV episodes. i plan to see the movies soon too.

THe movies were kitchy fun, but I'm so far behind on all my shows and can't add another. But I did completely catch up on the Dresden Files :) Reading the ancillary stuff now (Side Jobs)

Dresden Files is something I'm not familiar with myself, though troggy and BESW would be

@doppelgreener What's it about?
I need a new show

The only show out of all of these that I have seen is xfiles and I've only seen a couple episodes of that

5:21 PM
@SPavel Librarians are people who go out and find untamed magic, misused magic, or dangerous magical artifacts, end any danger connected to them, then bring them back to ~THE LIBRARY~ to be archived out of the hands of anyone who would misuse them (or worse, use them for evil) out of an effort to keep magic from unsafely affecting the world.
It's like Doctor Who meets Indiana Jones.

@doppelgreener This sounds like the plot of Jackie Chan Adventures

It's pretty fun, can be pretty serious, and isn't afraid to be both at once. The protagonist's best friend in the pilot episode is Excalibur, the legendary sword, which makes dog noises.
Like barking and yapping excitedly, growling territorially, etc

@doppelgreener THe books, not the 1 season it had on Syfy :)

@NautArch The books are what I'm talking about too (wasn't even aware there was a syfy series)

@doppelgreener with a little of SCP

5:23 PM
@NautArch Little bit of that too yeah
The series isn't afraid to run with its own jokes either, which is great.
BESW became aware of it because one of the writers actually uses Fate mechanics in the writing room to help guide the narrative behind the scenes.
Including characters having aspects, relationships, fate points, compels, etc.

@doppelgreener Seems like an interesting way to create a fleshed out character
You couldn't, for example, give compels to Qui-gon Jin
Because he is not a good character

5:38 PM
@SPavel i think saying he's not a good character is going a bit far
you're implying he has character which can be bad

@doppelgreener I mean - he is not good at being a character

@SPavel i agree with that. :D

6:24 PM
dying to know if the evil rogue is an NPC or player.

"evil rogue in our party" - seems to imply it's a player

@MikeQ seems like it, but then I'd think they'd also be complaining about That Guy.
and how he left the players at the table fighitng (and almost dying)

@NautArch The movies are nice because it's hard to find a decent action/adventure movie that I'm not reluctant to share with my kids.
Those and the National Treasures are basically my entire stable.

@NautArch Usually that is the case, but not always. Sometimes a group can pull off an evil player character and the other players accept it.
Alternatively, this is a That Guy problem, but that issue has been asked and answered so many times, such that it's not worth including in this new question. Or they already know how to handle the antagonizing player.

6:42 PM
@MikeQ very true. Although if it was a PC it seems kind of odd that they didn't notice him/her leaving the combat.
but i guess the RP could be excellent and good about no metagaming.

@NautArch OP said they "stealthed" during battle. Not sure how that worked mechancially

@nitsua60 oooh, didn't think about trying to watch the movies with the kiddoos.
@Rubiksmoose I'm guess it's just the Hide Action and then movement. Hopefully DM did passive perceptions.

@MikeQ It is extremely hard to imagine that this player is actually enhancing fun for the group. Almost every single party of new players has that person that is a rogue and goes around stealing from everone including the PCs and it is just never fun in my experience.
@NautArch It is hard to imagine that he snuck and stole successfully in the middle of a battle without being seen by anybody, but yeah I'm hoping the DM played it out right.

@Rubiksmoose I'm still holding out hope that it's an NPC.

@NautArch Hide/stealth is broken as soon as you move or make any kind of noise though so there is that

6:50 PM
@Rubiksmoose Oh I know. It's very unlikely that their behavior benefits anyone, but still possible that the other players tolerate some competitive play.

@NautArch yeah that would be best case scenario.

@Rubiksmoose My bad, I meant Stealth.

@NautArch well you roll stealth to take the hide action. If you are trying to conceal your location, hide is correct. At least according to my understanding

@Rubiksmoose And stealth also lets you "attempt to conceal yourself from enemies, slink past guards, slip away without being noticed"
I can't believe I never noticed that dodge gives adv. on dex saves

Whoa, they made Dodge good?
game ruined, +1 to AC vs 1 person was way more balanced

7:02 PM
@SPavel and disadvantage on attacks against. I mean, I rarely take the Dodge action, but that's a nice addition to remember.

oh, dodge is an action now?

@SPavel 'tis

So broken that anyone can do it, used to be a feat, much more balanced

@SPavel broken maybe. You're giving up your Action for that round. Unless you're a rogue with Cunning Action, a fighter doing an Action Surge, or have Haste going.

I'm kidding around
This seems to be a closer parallel to the Full Defense action anyway
Which was garbage because it was... +4 AC in exchange for your full round action?
A dodging character can at least run away

7:11 PM
@SPavel An engaged Dodging character in 5e would still take Opportunity ATtacks if they ran away. They'd need to take the Disengage action to run away cleanly :)
Reason #1 why I have to get books from the library: Took me 6 months to read the current Dresden Files series (15 books). I simply can not afford to buy my books. :D

7:31 PM
@NautArch Yeah Dodge is nice. It is my, "I don't have anything to contribute this round" action

@Rubiksmoose ha, same here.

@SPavel oh man this is bringing back many Pathfinder memories

7:45 PM
I'm so split about whether that dodge question deserves downvotes or not. I don't like downvoting questions for the most part

The site wants you to downvote questions
That's why it doesn't cost rep

@SPavel I always feel pretty bad though because I want everybody's question to be answered. The obviously bad ones get downvoted right away by me though.

@Rubiksmoose Less empathy, more gatekeeping!

Downvoting doesn't have to just be by itself, it can include a comment about what to improve in order to both get good answers and change one's downvote to an upvote.

@SPavel hahaha fair enough

7:48 PM
@Rubiksmoose I downvoted, if that helps. I understand what TJL is saying, but not having any idea what saving throws are for is a bit of a sign of poor research.

@PeterCooperJr. The best part is when the downvoters leave a comment, but their comment is wrong, and then they don't upvote when the mistake is pointed out

@NautArch That is true. They have their own section in the book.

I get downvoted a lot for using tags wrong - because I read tag wikis and downvoters don't

@SPavel do people often retag you?

@SPavel downvote

7:53 PM
@Rubiksmoose Surprisingly, no

@SPavel huh. That seems weird. If I see a wrong tag I retag not downvote. Maybe most of the people that do that to you don't have enough rep to retag you?

@Rubiksmoose it happens on WB so I think they just don't care

@RobRose [wave]

@BESW Howdy

@doppelgreener yeah, bit of an issue that is huh? :P
