@SerenaT Bot's still down? Uh oh. Did the update fail?

1:22 PM
Um. Why is there a 'pets' tag in the room description? That leads to a 404?

Its a meta tag

?

It might have been a tag once, and might have been removed?

Right. Shouldn't it be removed from the room desc then though?

It could. I'll leave it to the local mods

2:12 PM
room topic changed to The Litter Box: General discussion for pets.stackexchange.com. Pet pictures and gifs welcome. Oneboxes are awesome! Please read pets.meta.stackexchange.com/q/2338 for more information about the recent changes in this room's usage; thanks. (no tags)
@Sarov Don't know why that was there in the first place, but it's gone now

2:35 PM
@Sarov If you think that it was strange for there to be a random tag description, check out Tavern On the Meta's tags: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/89/tavern-on-the-meta
@Elmy Thanks! :D

"Be kind and avoid sarcasm" Avoid sarcasm? How do they expect me to live?!

@Sarov: Simple, don't die?

Simple and easy are not synonymous.

More seriously - Some folks don't get sarcasm, and some of it is... potentially mean
I'm a recovering snark, and I've hurt folks back in the day :(

It can be especially hard if you're not a native english speaker and don't understand certain figures of speach or popculture references or (worst of all) slang

2:49 PM
Imo it's fine as long as the 'be nice' is held to. If you're consistently nice, then even if you use sarcasm, at best people will interpret it correctly, at worst "Wait what?" "I was being sarcastic" "Oh okay."

@Sarov A lot of the time though, sarcasm isn't nice
or folks say "I was being sarcastic" to excuse something

Oh, sure, yeah. But correlation is not causation. Just because sarcasm can be mean doesn't mean that not-mean sarcasm should be banned.
Imo, anyway.

I have absolutely no problem with sarcasm if it's announced, like "(start sarcasm) Oh, That's how it's done. So easy! Why didn't I get the idea earlier? (end sarcasm)"
You give everyone the chance to understand it as intentioned and you cannot change the meaning afterwards claiming "it was sarcastic"

@Sarov If you know everyone gets it in a casual space, maybe

1 hour later…
4:00 PM
Mm. Personally I'd prefer something like "Be nice" as a mandate and "Be careful with sarcasm" as a guideline.

But I'm just complaining. :P

@Sarov I like "Be nice"
The problem with "Be nice" is it works for nice people
Less nice people... keep trying to find excuses and loopholes and claim they don't understand

Well sure. But then that's the difference between a mandate and a guideline.
When a mandate is consistently broken (or broken even once but with clear intent), it's not unexpected to just go "Sorry, bye."

Stuff like that
Some people insist on all these things being mandates. And try to find ways around guidelines.
Or just ignore it cause they feel like it

4:24 PM
My concern is that conflating mandates debases them.
(If everything becomes a mandate, mandates become meaningless)
