Q: Cat becoming a lot more adventurous

ggiaquinI have had a brother and sister pairing of cats since they were 4 weeks old (same liter too). The male was definitely the more bolder, always being the one to check out an area before my female came timidly behind. In my apartment though, they almost never jumped around. They struggled to jump...

Q: Peeing in the house

ShelleyI have recently had to go back to work leaving my 9 year old Schnoodle all alone for 9-10 hours a day. Every day when I come home he is excited to see me then lays in his bed once I come in the house. (I'm thinking he knows that he did something wrong) He has a doggie door and a fenced in yard t...

Q: If I cook rocks and branches will they be safe for aquarium fish?

VillageI want to add some rocks and tree branches to my aquarium, for decorations. If I put them in the oven and cook them, will they be safe for the fish? What temperature and length of time is sufficient?

@RebeccaRVT Yeah the case study makes the answer. It's a really interesting story regardless of the question!

Q: Will you help moderate this site? Nominations needed

Robert CartainoWe recently posted a nomination thread to appoint another moderator; unfortunately, we only had one user willing to step up and we need more users to fill in another vacancy. Ideally Moderators are elected by the community, but until the community is large enough to hold a proper election → we ...

4:48 PM
@Henders FYI- thanks for posting. MetaMoose should be posting it shortly also
@RebeccaRVT if you are still interested time, to self nominate
@Zaralynda you too
@Henders I see you already have your nomination in
@ChristyB. Not sure if you previously indicated an interst, but if so here is your chance.
@all anyone else I didn't name, if you have an interest put your name in the hat.
We have one opening definitely available
I have been a mod on the site for 3 years now, I have been seriously considering taking a break. So there will likely be two mods needed. If one of our new mods decides the job is not for them, and steps down. 3 mod could come from this nomination event.
Please encourage anyone you think might have an interest to self nominate for a mod job at the meta post

Thanks @JamesJenkins I will add myself
@JamesJenkins whats the deadline? I'm at work atm

5:17 PM
@JamesJenkins Ah right, I thought I better post it as Ceiling Cat probably would because that's main site :P

@RebeccaRVT anytime in the next couple of days is good.
Usually runs about 2 weeks, but might be more or less.

Exciting!

Neat! I'll also nominate myself in a few hours. Like @RebeccaRVT , I too am at work at the moment
@Henders my sister stays in your neck of the woods. She works for the city of London. Small world

7:10 PM
@ChristyB. Oh wow, that's far from you, right? Yeah I live just north of London :P Small world indeed :O

7:35 PM
@JamesJenkins right now I'm going to just continue as a high-rep user. This learning to program thing is taking up too much brainpower

What are you learning?

@Henders the project is to organize several terabytes of pdf reports written over the past 12 years with a bunch of different formats
so I've been told we're using java to import the pdfs into xml, hadoop to store/analyze, and then the customer expects an oracle db to maintain at the end. It's kinda a mess

Wow, sounds like a lot of data processing :P

@Henders yeah I'm really the only statistics type person here, so that's why I got brought in (the analyze part b/c right now the customer can't do trends analysis on flat pdf reports) but I've never done anything on this scale before

7:51 PM
Hmm yeah, programming is great for this kind of thing. Grouping data and in some way getting some meaningful stats out of it. I don't really do much work with stats but it sounds like a cool project :)

@Henders yeah it's just pretty overwhelming so I don't want to take on any additional responsibilities

That's fair enough. I'm hanging around on Charcoal most of the day anyway at work. It's good actually because you can respond to the reports in a few seconds and go right back to what you were working on.
