hello
@chili555 are you there?
Right here, my friend!
how are u doing?
How are you doing this fine and luminous evening?
I am doing quite well!
sheltered in place :-(
Even the docs and my wife agree!
23:02
what do they say?
I wanted to discuss the netplan answer where you said to be careful about mv /etc/netplan/*.yaml
Because it might obliterate more than one yaml
However, that's what I intended!!!
In so far, as some users have two or more .yaml files, and your mv command would rename them all to the same single name, thereby possibly wiping out files.
Because a person who installs server for the first time and doesn't know where to see why his ethernet isn't working...
is very unlikely to have two or more yamls with bonds and bridges and tuns and taps.
Those guys know what to do without poor, tired old Chili
23:06
Let me give an example of my caution... hold a sec whilst I type...
New guys like the instant case most likely have one malformed file
...holding...
A user has two files in /etc/netplan. One named eth0.yaml, and a second named wlan0.yaml. Your mv command would rename the first one to 01-netconf.yaml, and the file would get renamed to 01-netconf.yaml, so you'd lose all of the script in the first .yaml, due to the renaming.
Yes, indeed!!!
and the second file would get renamed to the same 01-netconf.yaml
However, the guy with two files undoubtably created them himself and probably knows what he's doing.
23:09
I didn't write that all correctly.
Those cases I treat very differently
Let me try this again... but paying closer attention to my prose...
OK, but my reasoning is the same. Go ahead.
eth0.yaml and wlan0.yaml. Your mv would rename eth0.yaml to 01-netcfg.yaml, and then immediately get overwritten by the wlan0.yaml rename, and you'd lose all of the script from eth0.yaml.
However, the guy with two files undoubtably created them himself and probably knows what he's doing.
Those cases I treat very differently
23:12
But how do you know what .yaml files are in /etc/netplan to start?
You don't unless you ask: ls /etc/netplan
correct
so how can you "blindly" rename them?
However, in a default server install, one file gets created that is a pretty accurate guess as to the ethernet interface and DHCP
Because a person who installs server for the first time and doesn't know where to see why his ethernet isn't working...
is very unlikely to have two or more yamls with bonds and bridges and tuns and taps.
Those guys know what to do without poor, tired old Chili
Oh, but you assume that the user hasn't tried to "fix" their problem themselves, and not created what some other person told them to create in /etc/netplan?
we're all tired on old :-)
tired and old
I can't type this afternoon.
Based on what he posted, with no mention whatever of netplan or the good old, "I tried everything", it's a pretty safe bet.
He was wondering about ifconfig
23:16
I never assume anything, and I would have done the ls /etc/netplan before the mv
net-tools, etc
from xenial!
Yikes!
Crazy.
unless I'm mixing up my cases today... somebody was installing xenial software on a 20.04 server!
I liked your comment to the other answerer that it was poorly done.
23:18
refresh my tired and old memory...
Yes, that's the one. You down-voted him and he deleted
yeah, that's the one.... my memory is still working! yeah!
You said:
Why would you install tools from xenial on 20.04 server? Of course lshw will show the ethernet as disabled. How do you know ens33? lo does not need an up. Incomplete and somewhat misleading answer. Sorry.
I thoght that was gold
what a mouthful eh?
You spanked him!
23:19
indeed! giggle
On a different note,
have you seen recent comments by Pilot6?
I am willing to try what I am 90% sure is the quick solution sometimes. This was a good one!
Yes. He seems a bit impatient these days. Cabin fever??
yes, he's been down right rude and c.... I can't think of the word...
He seems to put in about 18 hours a day, too.
Maybe tired
something
It's not like him.
or her :-)
If it continues or worsens, we might think about reaching out
23:23
one user did in an answer. did u see it?
No. Do you have a link?
It got deleted by the mods... and it would take some digging to find it again... but in short... the observer commented on Pilots tone and intent.... I'm saying it nicely.
Let's hope that the mods took note and are watching
Darn it... I still can't think of the word... it starts with "c", and it means to talk down to somebody... help me...
condesending!
My memory still works... a little slow... but it still works!
exactly
23:27
Old age is a cruel joke!
not a good attitude here, IMO
LOLOL!!! You talkin to me?
enough about Pilot6... I was just curious if you saw it. No... I was talking about ME!
I suspect I have at least ten years on you!
ok, I'll spring... how old?
Hint: I retired in 1998
23:29
oh don't make me do the math...
Hint:I have a great-grandson!
you could have retired young... giggle
I did, in fact
I'm 65. I have brain surgery in 2018, and I still haven't gotten back to 100%
had brain
Hint: I am not required to take off my shoes at the airport
23:31
oh I had some jokes to retort on that line :-)
LOL!
I have 12 years on you
fess up
I had chemotherapy in 2009 and 2020.
gosh... and just what are we both doing here on AU... we should be sailing or RVing!
I actually answered a post in the infusion chair!
23:32
yuck
that's dedication
are u ok now?
I was chatting with a family on vacation in front of a restaurant in Silverton, Colorado and he asked about my RV
I told him my coach of choice was A380.
A380 is a big one?
yeah... that's a big one alright!
u let somebody else do the driving!
He didn't get it at first.
Yes, while I sip an adult beverage and get there is three hours, not three days!
23:38
oh but you're missing the fun and the freedom of RVing!
Big payments, black water tank, parked 9 feet from partying drunks. Yeah, I know!
giggle
do u have 8pm howlers near u?
I am not sure what that is so I expect not
Is that another term for partying drunks?
Somebody started this thing... encouraging people to come outside at 8pm and howl. Idiots. Like little lambs they do what they're told, and act like Neanderthals.
Egad! No, mercifully, we don't.
23:43
lucky you!
What city/state are u in?
Lake Wylie, South Carolina. Just outside Charlotte in the tax haven.
And you?
Large covid activity there?
Lakeport, CA. 3 hours north of San Francisco
Nope. A few cases but we don't know anyone locally that had or has it.
Ahhh! One of the socialist states!
Have you seen the john hopkins covid dashboard web site?
No... hippies, dopers, and naked people! Giggle.
not recently. I check the CDC site once in a while
23:47
let me get the url for u...
the data is shocking!
well done site
I just hope the downward trend continues.
there hasn't been a downward trend yet!
China (if u believe the data) and Austria are flat-lined.
the number in the US are increasing daily
I believe precisely zero of anything China says. Zero.
23:55
I'll review the CDC closer, later.
CDC site
Anyway, it's been a real thrill chatting w/you.
Keep up the good work my friend!
Likewise! Stay safe and let's all get through this without a cough or sneeze!
take care!
bye for now
