1:09 AM
@CaptainBohemian you could say that..
@Arjun main to Bangalore main rehta hoon

2:09 AM
@CalvinKhor Oh you’ve IPad? Nice
Which cell phone do you use?

3:07 AM
@sai-kartik ,mera matlab tha ki kaha busy rehete ho?

3:21 AM
@Arjun Acha.. Kahi nahi Bhai bas padhai Kar rha tha

3:34 AM
@sai-kartik , bhai, JEE postpone kar diya gaya h
chill

3:51 AM
@Arjun Haan pata hai yar
Vo bhi Kar raha

matlab?

Aur kya hai na ki Mera paas koi smartphone Nahi hai. Laptop use karna padta hai
@Arjun *pata hai yaar

@sai-kartik , koi na

1 hour later…
5:04 AM
just tell the approach

5:27 AM
$x^p\sin(1/x)$ is differentiable for what p?
for x not equal to zero

6:11 AM
@user69608 nvm

7:04 AM
@CalvinKhor Are you now able to come here?

@Knight, doubt in physics?

@Arjun no, he just pinged me in my meta about something
@JohnRennie Hi :-) Goody Morning

@Knight hi :-)

@JohnRennie Sir I need you
Tension and pulleys are giving me so much headache

@Knight , better rephrase it

7:19 AM
why?

nothing
joke

@Knight post the question ...

We have to find accelerations of the blocks
So, drawing forces on each the blocks we have :

@Arjun lol

@Knight , it's damn easy @Knight

7:24 AM

@JohnRennie Sir I want to know why tension $T$ is there at all?

Ah, you just beat me to it :-)

LOL
@JohnRennie My arrows are straight

There has to be a tension in the string otherwise the masses would both accelerate downwards at $g$.

7:25 AM
Sir I want to why do we have tension $T$ there? Tension is just a stretch

tag me again

Instead the 2kg mass moves upwards, so obviously there has to be an upwards force larger than $2g$ acting on it. That force is the tension in the string.

@CalvinKhor Ping ping

@JohnRennie can you please ping me after knight is done? I still have that fluids question...

@JohnRennie okay, what I thought was the 8 kg mass is pulled down by $8 g$ so the sting there is pulled by $8~g$, on the other side the string is pulled by $2~g$, therefore tension should $10~g$, isn't it?

7:29 AM
No. The tension isn't the sum of the forces at the ends.

what is it sir? I'm pretty much puzzled with tension
Because as far as I think tension exist only if the string is stretched.

@Knight tension at each point of a massless string is the same. Otherwise there would be a net force on an element in the string, which is impossible since F=ma=0a=0.

@JohnRennie Can you please come back here?

@Knight the tension in string is just the force exerted at the end of the string, regardless of whether it's elastic or not.

@JohnRennie Yes, that's what I did

7:43 AM
I'm not sure why you think it should be more complicated than that.

@JohnRennie Hahahha, yes that's right. So, sir can you just say something like this "Accept it now the way I have done and after some time (may be few years) you will realize the truth"

Basically yes

I need your commandment to follow that method

I command you to follow that method

Thanks
Sir, if you have some time please explain elevators to me
When they accelerate upwards, total normal force $N= mg + ma$. But I cannot understand it
as $g$ and $a$ are in opposite directions

8:01 AM
@Knight did u manage to get the full site on your phone

@CalvinKhor Yes

do you get sounds

by clicking on full site at the bottom

oo lol

please ping me after 10 seconds

8:02 AM
ok
@Knight 🏓️

no sound :(

are you getting sounds on your expensive iPad?

lmao
nope

Can you explain something related to elevators to me?

8:06 AM
i could try
just know that you know exactly how many force diagrams ive drawn in the last idk 8 years

HAHAHAH how many?

err 1
for your string pulling two balls

Just gravity here
No pseudo force

@CalvinKhor Can you convince yourself that I have drawn an elevator with a block inside it?

8:10 AM
My downwards is the only force

no any force, since no acceleration? if v denotes a constant speed?

@CalvinKhor ,yes

ok, go on

Our block have some mass $m$, elevator is going up with a constant speed $v$.

weightless elevator clearly

8:12 AM
Why gravity is the only force on the block? Doesn't elevator has to counter act the gravity for moving up with $v$?

if there was any force, it would accelerate
any net force
the elevator is counteracting gravity with an upwards force
exactly equal to mg N

@CalvinKhor Yes, at every moment the upward force by the elevator is cancelling the gravity, right?

yeah
the earth is spinning very very fast

lol

you are not holding onto your walls for dear life because the speed is (roughly) constant
without acceleration there is no force
same with the elevator

8:17 AM
as block is also moving up with a constant velocity $v$ upwards, that means it is counter-acting gravity every moment?

yes....i think? not sure what your question means

Hmmm.... I meant that block's velocity is $v$, that is constant right?

yes

But gravity is pulling down to it, therefore we have to have an upward force cancelling the gravity, ha?

yes

8:20 AM
That means zero net force acting on the block?

yup yup

WOW! No net force on the block ! Oh my god!
I did it

So, if I have that block on an inclined surface inside the elevator then it wouldn't slide, right?

do you know about friction?

8:27 AM
Ignore it

if frictionless, the normal force will make the block have a net horizontal component

will it go away (I mean slide away)?

Hey @Knight and @CalvinKhor and @Arjun!

@CalvinKhor But why normal force would exist if gravity is already cancelled?

@sai-kartik hihi
Gravity is cancelled by what?

8:31 AM
@sai-kartik, hi padaku!

yes it should slide

@Arjun padaku?

Ha

Matlab?

@CalvinKhor By the force which is making it to move upwards with constant velocity $v$

8:33 AM
that force is called the normal force
it comes from the interaction with the elevator

@sai-kartik , studious student

if there was no elevator, the block would not be able to move up with constant speed

@Arjun I have no choice :/ it's my last attempt. Do or die situation here ...
@Arjun 😂😂😂😂

@sai-kartik , I am not judging you bro :-), work hard
@sai-kartik ,this happened to me with fruit beer tho😂

8:36 AM
@Arjun never drank anything that has "beer" in its name 😬😶

rootbeer?

@sai-kartik ,it doesn't actually conatins beer, it's like Appy 🤦

@CalvinKhor nope. Nothing.
@Arjun yeahhh ik just saying

@Knight following hopefully?

@sai-kartik, see this☝️

8:41 AM
@Arjun Lololol😂😂😂😂

@CalvinKhor I'm back

so elevator is providing the normal force and gravity is cancelling it
ha?

well the gravity is causing the normal force instead of the other way
but when you write down the equations thats exactly the same thing

@CalvinKhor Yes. So, everything is getting cancelled why then the block would slide?

8:46 AM
oh, we are talking about the inclined one
ok, time to draw my second force diagram

Wait can I have some context please

@CalvinKhor LOL

@sai-kartik for?

Should I draw it?

8:47 AM
its k ill manage

:-)

@CalvinKhor the elevator problem you're discussing

Wow! it's a very nice figure, reminds me of crayons
Clap for Calvin, everyone please

i'll have u know the square is 100% perfect

8:51 AM
Oh my ... ROFL
So, will you resolve $N$ along vertical and horizontal or $mg$ along the plane and perp to it?

yes

Are we supposed to tell if the block will move?

no spoilers

Is the lift accelerating?

no, constant speed v
i.e. it plays no role in the force diagram

8:54 AM
@CalvinKhor just say yes if we're supposed to find if the block is gonna move or not :p

@CalvinKhor Yes? with force will you resolve?

@sai-kartik yes
$mg\cos \theta$ is pressing into the surface, so that's the size of the normal
there's still the force of size $mg\sin\theta$ along the surface

@CalvinKhor and nothing's balancing it!

yes

@CalvinKhor hmm... can you resolve $N$ along vertical and horizontal and then say vertical is cancelled by the $mg$

8:59 AM
how would the vertical be cancelled?
that's assuming that there is no net vertical force

@CalvinKhor Because we want to have no net force in vertical direction, $v$ is constant

in the previous scenario, the block could not move because it was sat stably on the floor
the elevator has no net forces acting on it
but the block is free

yes

Finally the time to be wierdo

uh oh

9:05 AM
@NoseBleed Does your nose really bleed bro?

@Knight even if you resolve the Normal force there will still be a component of the normal acting on the block...(after cancelling with mg)

@Knight yes but no

lmao
hard pass

recently I have been listening to this kind of songs

@NoseBleed Please delete it
Joke should not be vulgar

9:07 AM
as room owner what powers do u have
oo
i found it

I have ability to make bad jokes

This room was placed in timeout for 1 second; no reason sorry

what?

@CalvinKhor with great power comes great responsibility xD

oo and i can move messages too

9:08 AM
@CalvinKhor Don't you think vertical forces should cancel for $v$ to be constant?

the block is no longer moving at speed v
only the elevator is

Oh okay!

@Knight v need not be cared about much here..

Thats a nice point

As long as you're talking about the block that is...

9:10 AM
@CalvinKhor Then what the block is doing? Isn't it going up with $v$?

@Knight Depends on which frame you watching from

at t=0 its speed is v upwards, but its accelerating
down the slope

If you're looking at the whole thing from the ground it moves with v upward and some different velocity down the incline. So you use vector addition to find the resultant.
If you're looking from the lift, the block will just appear to slide down the incline with some acceleration

i think you shouldnt introduce knight to frames yet
or maybe we should idk my physics sucks

Okay! I got it

9:12 AM
🤧😏😣😫🤐🤐🤐🤐
🤐
👋👋👋
I don't know what to write....🤐

🧤

later 🤔🥺😭

@sai-kartik ,perks of being a JEE aspirant, less than a minute problem

🧼

may be sign language will be better

more

@sai-kartik, I have a doubt

last one |<)

@Arjun this gave me serious trauma as a 5 year old ngl

@satan29 ,lol
@satan29,u free?

yeah, for about 20 minutes
bol kya hua

9:20 AM
21

last question
and I go

Probably should use AM GM, since x is positive
@NoseBleed ,21

if you could swap body with someone for 1 day who would it be?

Which question?

21

9:21 AM
Okok

@Arjun he he
do second derivative test

@NoseBleed ,we have to findthe value

@NoseBleed no has that much patience 😅

9:23 AM
Try this question

@sai-kartik wolfram Mathematica

@SMSheikh, tum gujrati ho?

Kya dikkat hai?

Ganda ka matalab?
Stupid?
Haina

Abe ye toh Hindi word hai

9:25 AM
@NoseBleed lemme provide some context you might be missing out. This is a practice problem for one of the toughest entrance exams in India. And the most certainly do not allow a calculator inside let alone Wolfram alpha

@SMSheikh ,arre,arre, nakli gujrati

@Arjun is the answer 6?

"gunda boy , bad elements of society" meme hai

@NoseBleed, not even plus minus calc!
@sai-kartik ,😘
Yep

Seedha am gm

9:26 AM
AM GM?

Put 2 everywhere

@sai-kartik , mai kidar faas gaya

@Arjun i will use the substition (x + 1/x)=t.

One day I will make a calculator

O bnai

9:27 AM
Try my rotation question

Maaro mujhe
Maaro

Cheating calculator

Tera harmonium baja dunga

x^3 + 1/x^3 = t^3-3t

@Arjun maar Diya

9:27 AM
Calculation me galti🤷

@Arjun got it now right?

Hanji
Maaro bhai

@Arjun 1000 rank niche Gaya Tu

Check bhi kiya tha

although i dont think puttingx=2 will work always @sai kartik

9:28 AM
@sai-kartik ,zayada nahi ho raha

@Arjun calculator se?😂😂😂
@satan29 no no I did not mean putting X=2

@satan29 ,given x is positive

minimzing a complete fraction doesnt work by minimizing numerator and denominator

I meant using X+1/X=2

@sai-kartik yes, imeant that only.

x+1/x has a minimum of 2

@satan29 how should we do this then? 🤔

X+1/x =t seems the way to go actually

@Arjun +/- 500 karlo
@satan29 hmmm

@sai-kartik , uncertainty zayada to nahi h?

9:30 AM
write x^6 + 1/x^6 as a^3 +b^3

just simplify and apply second derivative test may be

Use vernier caliper

Jee is not tougher than undergraduate Homework lol

factor it to (t^2-2)(t^4-4t^2+1)

@Arjun Kuch to compromise Karna Hoga. Nta Jo conduct Kar Raha hai test... Boht jyada bad gayega uncertainty

9:31 AM
=t^6-6t^4+9t^2-2
so the numerator becomes 6t^4-9t^2

@satan29 ,bhai cool
Ho gaya h
Relax

denominator is 2t^3-3t
simply karle

Is it hindi

fraction becomes 3t
which has a minima of 6
@Arjun correct tareeka dekhle
numerator ke har expression pe and denominator ke har expression pe AM GM lagana is mathematical nonsense

Thanks,

9:34 AM
it doesnt guarantee anything.
np

ok cya

Nice

@satan29 Sahi Bola Bhai
Kuch random Kar liya aur aa Gaya xD

lmao
happens a lot in JEE questions tbh

9:38 AM
@satan29 free ke 4 mark aise hi aate hai
Especially in numerical questions

haa

1 hour later…
11:07 AM
I think too little of information theory is taught in the lecture
no wonder I can't understand some things in the lecture

what lecture? are you ina c oruse?
in a course* lmao i dont have a stroke promise

a lecture about holographic principle in the black hole context and black hole information paradox
the lecturer even didn't tell us what is a bit
so when I asked him a question why the unit of capacity is bits/second, I can't understand his explanation.

self study
is the only option captain

he said the bit isn't a real unit of capacity, which has no unit; bit here is to measure the information contents rather than a physical unit
I was so confused by his explanation of such

i cant even tell you what capacity is :') sry cant help
maybe books? or ask in phys.SE?

11:14 AM
finally I understood what he means by asking a person working on computing what bit is.

ah h

I think I have probably heard about what bit is long ago, but I forget it because information theory is not an orthodox subject in physics

john sir might be able to help you

information theory isn't usually a course in physics

entropy is now a very physics thing tho

11:37 AM
I found hunger is so demanding a rogue - it haunts no matter what you are doing, sleeping, studying, etc. sun or rain - as long as more 6 hours have passed since last meal.
so the best way to solve hunger is an automaton which makes meals every 6 hours.
the unit bit is associated with the base of logarithm. I also asked the instructor why not use 4 as the base when there are 4 symbols, rather than 2 symbols, to be used, then he replied me if other bases are used, the unit changes accordingly.

i cant imagine ur life cap, i keep forgetting to eat

but when hunger haunts, it's difficult to study

11:52 AM
not for me lol
i just forget

and if you let hunger aside for too long, your stomach will hurt later.

after 20 minutes of "wait let me just compute this thing properly" the pain is just gone

I had serious stomachache problem for a coup;e of months because I ignored hunger too often.
it's not so easy I get a little better now.

one day i was so tired and i just realised i missed breakfast and lunch

I visited a pharmacist, who gave me some medicine and told me I need to take that medicine and have the regular circadian rhythm.

11:57 AM
that makes sense yeah

I told her I only ate one meal at the dusk in a day.

i definitely feel better now that i just put food on my schedule and force myself to eat

I took the medicine but didn't feel that medicine is much effective.

i thought circadian rhythms was just for sleep

but I eat more meals in a day, then I get better in my stomachache problem.

11:59 AM
as long as the problem went away its all good
