You said "switch to GNOME on Xorg session on login via GDM", but I don't understand what that means, can you elaborate please
OK, I see that... I updated my question with output from echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE, current session is X11
which is my default as I've never changed at the login screen
Then I would recommend to proceed by manual bug reporting with sudo apport-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.120.crash and then remove crash-files and wait for its re-creation :)
I will do that the next time it crashes. Will that give me more details, or send details to Canonical?
I mean that sudo apport-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.120.crash will open the bug-reporting window in real time (now, on your request) and then you can send bug report to Canonical.
Understood. Thanks for your help.

I updated answer, if it would help, you can accept it :)

@Broadsworde You probably have a bad GNOME Shell extension. Edit your question and show me "ls -al ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions"
17:17
how do I get to: extensions.gnome.org/local?
The only extension I think is:
$ gsettings list-schemas | grep extension
org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock
hello
hi
I can only find the one extension
dash-to-dock, which I believe comes with gnome-tweaks
Really? You should see approx 3, and Dash to Dock shouldn't be one of them. At the local page that I gave you, temporarily disable it, restart Gnome Shell, and retest.
click that link
DtD doesn't some with Tweak.
Tweaks.
Firefox error: Although GNOME Shell integration extension is running, native host connector is not detected. Refer documentation for instructions about installing connector.
17:32
Yes, you have to install 2 pieces of software to use that page. Follow the on-screen instructions. Takes 2 minutes.
the installs all seem to be for chrome-gnome-shell, will this work for Firefox?
ok, 2 mins
Ubuntu AppIndicators and Ubuntu Dock
That's all
AppIndicators, Ubuntu Dock, and not DtD, correct?
No Desktop Icons?
No
no DtD, just the 2 I listed
17:37
Those 2/3 extensions are standard. DtD is not installed. Have you installed any other GNOME Shell mods?
Do you have any startup apps?
Very clean setup, no customised startups
Do u have ANY other user account on this system?
the only extension I can think of was the gnome-tweaks
no, just me
my laptop
The gnome-shell crash occurs AT BOOT, or at USER LOGIN?
Show me "ls -al /var/crash"
Good question, it's been happening every boot, so that could be either... I will have to test both and get back to you... probably tomorrow if that;s OK? /var/crash is empty because I deleted today's report, I will add details to my question tomorrow or as soon as I see a new crash report.
17:43
ah... when the Problem dialog appears, do u hit CANCEL or REPORT PROBLEM?
Report Problem, and nothing happens on screen, don't know if anything is happening underneath.
Oh, normally it gives more options to VIEW details, SEND report, or DON'T SEND REPORT. Do u remember the DATE of the crash log u deleted?
this morning was the latest Problem dialogue
so I'm guessing the same date for that crash report
OK, then it'll probably occur again... and it probably happens at user login. If so, then temporarily create a NEW user... called TESTING, or whatever, then log into that account, and see if you get the same error. Report back later.
OK, will do. Thanks for your help so far

bye for now then.
start comments to me with @heynnema or I may miss them.
