@Bookworm This reminds me of the time when my late husband, learning Hindi, asked me how one would translate "It was nice to see you." He attempted a literal translation which went something like: I looked at you with a good eye (the opposite of the evil eye in the question). "Yes, dear," I replied. "Go with that." Luckily he had too much common sense to trust me.
(For Hindi speakers like @CDR and @CowperKettle: the phrasing he attempted was तुम्हारी नज़र अचछी लग गई)
Actually it's You looked at me with a good eye, now that I look at the exact phrasing.
