Q: Quote from children's book, "...a ring, a stone, a finger bone..."

2shortguyI'm trying to find a fantasy book from my childhood. I distinctly remember a quote from it, "...a ring, a stone, a finger bone...", describing three talismanic objects. There was mention of spells being "the crucible that held the will of the spellcaster". I think there was also an element of tim...

Q: What role does Virginia Woolf play in the well-known play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

D.SameeTo me, it seems that the play is expressly about a married couple who attempt to psychologically destroy each other. I understand that the title is a play on the phrase, "Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?" but how does Virginia Woolf replace the big bad wolf in this play? Moreover, how does Virgi...

I found one in the school library and met the requirement with decent marks. For some reason I cannot recall enough about this poem to find it again. I've had l...

Q: What is the significance of Grendel being descended from Cain?

Rand al'ThorIn the tale of Beowulf, the monster Grendel is said to be descended from the biblical character of Cain. This was surprising to me, as I'd thought Beowulf was a pre-Christian story given its setting in pagan Germanic countries, but I learned that paganism vs Christianity in Beowulf is a hotly deb...

the question says “I learned that paganism vs Christianity in Beowulf is a hotly debated subject, so I won't go into that large topic here.” which I find weird. I thought there wasn't much to debate about that, it's clearly an old pagan story that was put to writing by Christian scribes who added some shallow Christian references in it to make it more acceptible
that's what makes it very unique, it let the oral tradition survive despite odds

Q: What does "as it will sometimes when you have not a moment to spare for yourself" mean in this passage of Heart of darkness?

CharoIn this excerpt from Heart of darkness, by Joseph Conrad, that you can download from Project Gutenberg website, Marlow, the sailor protagonist of the story, is describing his feelings as going up the river (emphasis mine): Going up that river was like traveling back to the earliest beginnings of...
