@GarethRees So the argument is that … identification questions give you free XP? By that reasoning, we should ban Harry Potter questions on Sci Fi SE.
I personally like identification questions.
And they do seem useful in that often it points random readers of the site to interesting pieces of literature. If something is memorable enough that a poster asks an ID question, it is often worth talking about.
Even the wrong answers, the ones that aren't what the OP read, sometimes point to interesting texts.
(The part that I don't like is closing story-id questions as duplicates. I should at some point write a proper post against that on Sci Fi meta.)
