Q: Is the "Lister Foundation" in "Catcher in the Rye" a real organization?

Howard BakerIn Chapter 21 of Catcher in the Rye, Phoebe tells Holden about a movie she saw at the "Lister Foundation". No other mention of the Foundation appears in the text. Was it a real organization when Salinger wrote Catcher? If not, is it based on another organization, or is it a product of Salinger's ...

@Randal'Thor, not sure if you noticed, but you're are 999 non-deleted answers on Puzzling. (Posted here since you're not pingable in the Lair)

if people with ideas could answer my meta question I'd be most grateful; it's been up for a week
that's a bug
though I did check, and this post didn't get a FP review yet
but so late??
huh you know that should've probably gone in the Lair
eh
too lazy

also you may have noticed I've given up on tags until AP tests are over

@bobble I haven't checked this specific case, but if someone's actual first post is deleted, their second post will go to the queue. This'll happen within a certain age limit for the account, although I don't recall the specific numbers.

Q: Book with unicorn protagonist who plays music

TheresaIt's been a long time, so my memory of the details is fuzzy. But I remember reading a book in which unicorns were the main characters; this is not a book about humans befriending unicorns in our world, but about a whole different unicorn society. The plot centered around music, something like the...

@bobble yes
@bobble of the two I'd say as the question is about the specific message the work is trying to convey, not about a theme like marriage or childhood or money.

... why would anybody downvote Randolph's Ramayana / Mahabharata question? People are weird

@bobble Oddly, my site profile says 999 but my network profile says 998. Not sure which one is right, and I'm not going to count them to be sure!
In more local news, Gareth and I are both close to 400 answers here.
(Rees, not McCaughan.)
@bobble Hmm, I wasn't aware we have a tag. That seems a very inconsistently applied tag, and probably not worth having here IMO (with the 5-tag limit, we probably can't afford to add that tag to every question about something to do with the plot).
@verbose I was expecting more downvotes for being poorly researched. It's probably a dumb question to anyone who knows the first thing about either the Ramayana or the Mahabharata. (Although not as dumb-for-everyone-who-knows-the-first-thing-about-the-topic as my Hindi/Bengali question ...)

9:00 AM
yes, but you specifically quote Wikipedia saying that the Mahabharata contains an abbreviated version of the Ramayana
That's a perfectly valid thing to ask about
And it's a complicated answer

I certainly learned more than I expected to from the answers.
If it's only my question getting downvoted and not your or Gareth's answers, I'm fine with it.

I'm surprised you read mine so quickly. I thought you'd say it was too long and you'd need to make time for it on the weekend or something.
Also, I have edited it quite considerably since I first posted it, as I found a scholarly article about the relationship between the two stories only later
Also, TIL that the Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom
And I also learned a lot more about terms like "Great Britain," "The British Isles," etc.
Though I'm wondering why it's "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" as though the Orkneys and the Shetlands and the Isle of Wight don't count. I mean, if Great Britain refers to the geographic island that includes England, Wales, and Scotland, and Northern Ireland refers to that portion of Ulster that isn't part of the Republic of Ireland, then the other islands I just mentioned are part of the UK too but the name doesn't reflect that.

9:47 AM
@GarethMcCaughan oh I dunno. It's more detailed but says essentially the same thing as yours
@bobble We need a few Garys (Garies?), Garrys (Garries?), Garrets, Garetts, and Garretts to add to the general mêlée. We could organize a battle like the Battle of the Joshes

@GarethRees Thank you! It's very nice!

@verbose Here's another thing to learn about the terminology of these sceptred isles: you shouldn't say "the Orkneys" and "the Shetlands". Just Orkney and Shetland are fine, or the Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands, but they don't like it if you pluralise Orkneys and Shetlands as nouns.

@verbose That sounds as if you watched this CGP Gray video.

@Randal'Thor okay then!
@Tsundoku interesting. A bit out of date, as it says the UK is a member of the EU
@Randal'Thor ditto and very funny. It led me to this one
CGP Grey has an interesting accent that’s hard to place

@verbose Foil Arms and Hog are full of funny videos, especially if you're at all interested in Irish culture. This is one of my favourites, mostly for how beautifully it captures the atmosphere of Irish traditional singing.
(Not that all their stuff is Brexit themed! They also do stuff like personifying parties, wordplay places, and one I've linked here before, dating bouncers.)

Q: Who is "you" in "The Waking"?

bobbleI'm trying to understand Roethke's "The Waking", and one of my problems is that I'm not sure who "you" is. Most of the poem uses "I" or "my", etc.. There are a few instances where other pronouns are used: First instance of "you" (line 7): Of those so close beside me, which are you? This verse (...
