Q: Sci-fi short story about not getting into cars with strangers

Rand al'ThorI read this story in English in the 2000s (although it was probably much older), in a collection or anthology of several short stories by different authors; I think the collections may have been called something along the lines of "Tales of Mystery and Horror". It also included Roald Dahl's "The ...

Q: Meaning of " In the wide planting of his feet, his blithe assumption of an audience, she saw Dexter"

Viser HashemiThis context is from The children's bach by Helen Garner She turned round with her arms full of stinking sheets. He had not heard a word. His eyes had gone out of focus, his pitch was up, his pace was accelerating, his smile was the one-sided, manic grimace of the born raver: he was away on the ...

Q: What kind of jeans are Sears Rough Riders

Seulgi SoI'm reading Kristin Hannah's Firefly Lane. There's a scene when Kate (one of two main characters) saw Tully(the other main character) wearing fashionable elephant bells and wished her jeans weren't Sears Rough Riders. What is Sears Rough Riders? Is it tight jeans?

> Edit should be reserved for when the question is close-worthy as written, but when you believe you can rescue the question to make it fit the scope. This may mean adding in details the asker left in comments or making slight adjustments to an opinion-based question so that it's objective. Don’t make minor edits if the question would be closed even with these changes, as it will remove the question from review.

'ello. Welcome to Literature SE's main site chat!
If you were looking for Science Fiction & Fantasy's chatroom, that is here: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/58631/…

i am looking for people who reads novels

Well, I read novels. I read less recently because of an overload of homework. Why are you looking?

just for fun
what genre you read
wassup randl thor

Most genres, as long as they are good. I like fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction.

9:11 PM
@CowperKettle Wait, it's illegal in Belarus to read books of Belarusian authors? How does that come about? I've heard of states banning the culture/literature of certain ethnic minorities within the country, or that of neighbouring "enemy" countries, but this is new to me.

have you read the human emperor record
why is it illegal to read , what is the content

@SioudAbdou Hello, welcome to chat! I read novels, all sorts of genres but especially fantasy. My favourite series (as you may guess from my username) is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.

> Forcefully brought over from the modern world to an alternate world, Wang Chong felt detached and lived his life aimlessly.

However, when calamity struck and he saw his family and everything he cared for being torn apart, he felt regret.

Thus, he stood up and eventually became the Grand Marshal of the Central Plains, leading an army against those who seek to destroy all he cherished.

Yet, despite all his efforts, it was already too late to reverse destiny.

But before his death, a shooting star, the same one which brought him to this world, appeared before him, and he was given another
this one?
I pulled a description off Google

yep that one
@ra

Well, I don't know why it would be banned, as I have never heard of it before. You could ask a question here, I think. We have a tag

9:14 PM
@Randal'Thor why reading a book is illegal

@SioudAbdou I don't know, that's why I asked CowperKettle who posted the original message here.

well i will post a question

Books are banned for many reasons. Most often someone claims there is "objectional content". Sex, positive depictions of LGBTQ+ people, "dangerous ideas", magic, etc.

@bobble Are we mixing two conversations here? I was responding to CowperKettle's newsflash about Belarusian literature; has The Human Emperor also been banned anywhere?

I have no idea
I am not entirely sure what is going on

9:18 PM
@bobble Or negative depictions of particular countries/governments/regimes.
@bobble I think you assumed these two messages were related when they weren't.

In my defense they were posted one after the other

hhh idk why when i see bobble profile pic i think he is the admin

bobble is neither an admin here nor a "he" :-)

so bobble is a girl
where are u from buble

My gender is... complicated. however I do prefer she/her pronouns, usually. (incidentally, today she/her does match my gender)
I'm from the Western United States

9:26 PM

Good question! @CowperKettle, maybe time for your first full answer on this site? :-)

Q: You can enter prison for reading in Belarus, why?

Sioud Abdou #Belarus 66-year-old Halina Huliankova was sentenced to 20 days in prison for reading books of Belarusian authors. She was on a train together with other pensioners. She is being held at Akrescina. In Belarus, you can end up in prison for reading a book. I just heard that you can enter prison ...

9:47 PM
soo ?

I'm working as an academic mathematician. Literature is a hobby.

wooow you do research or teach or both

@SioudAbdou Note that chat is only semi-synchronous communication: if someone doesn't answer your question for a few minutes, it might mean they're doing something else at the same time and not only in this browser tab, so you don't need to chase up a few minutes later. (It might also mean they don't want to answer the question, for whatever reason.)
Both research and teaching.

cool , i understand you the 'soo ?' is acctually refering to bookworm as i am confused why did he post my question in the chat

Oh, sorry!
I misunderstood.
Bookworm is a bot, not a real person; it posts in chat all new questions from the Literature SE main site.

9:55 PM
oww
well i am going to do homework

Bon courage.

merci beaucoup

@PrinceNorthLæraðr, I present your tag to-do list: , , , and
Yes, I left all the weird music ones for you. You're welcome

10:30 PM
@Randal'Thor Wow, I thought the "hhh" was a typo :P

woo, a question I bumped for tag-edits got itself two answers

Wait, Tsundoku is older than Randy?
I... thought Rand al' Thor was in his forties >.<;
Or maybe late thirties
But like I assumed Rand was a geezer ....

Apologies to Michael Kay for not writing this answer in XML and transforming it into Mardown using XSLT.

Unless Tsundoku is a very old geezer? Doesn't strike me as so

@PrinceNorthLæraðr I don't know. But I think I am of the same generation as Mith's parents (based on a comment about Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", if memory serves).

10:35 PM
@Tsundoku o_O

@PrinceNorthLæraðr Of course, the moai in my avatar is much older.

Recalculating
Also, I thought Verbose was like... in his thirties

I'm convinced verbose is older than me. I can't remember what I based that on.

Do you think we feel old?

10:39 PM
Judging by your sleep schedule, no

LOL.

Either Rand is much younger than I thought or Tsundoku and Verbose are much older than what I thought
@Tsundoku Link?

Released... 1987. My parents were teenagers.
@bobble I had looked at that question before but had somehow never gotten around to researching an answer to it ...
@PrinceNorthLæraðr So we've had a bit more time than you to read books...

Update on unanswered questions: "1,081 questions with no upvoted or accepted answers". Still going down!

11:02 PM
So I now have officially written 440 answers.
I'm calling it a day.

Sleep!

11:17 PM
Are we sure we need

I don't know, that's why I left it to you

This is kind of a weird case, so I'm just going to chalk it up to "special exception"
I'm just really tired so I'm too tired to think through it

11:32 PM
Hm
@Randal'Thor What do you think of ? We normally don't tag songs or even individual stories, but does this warrant it's own tag? I'm not familiar enough with the work or the genre as a whole to make a decision on it
