Well, my new years' resolution to stop by this site regularly and answer questions was blown up because MY COUNTRY WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A FUCKING AUTOGOLPE, thank you very much.
@Tsundoku how's that working out so far?

@verbose Not well, and without impeachment, US politics will only guarantee a repetition of the events.

Q: Spy story involving a strong magnet, a ludricously precise X-Ray machine, and a code book

Sean DugganI read this somewhere in the early 90s, from a paperback book, in English. I would have sworn that this was one of the stories in Alfred Hitchcock's Sinister Spies collection, as I remember it being in a Hitchcock collection and that's the only anthology I've found of spies, but none of the summa...

@verbose Yeah... I thought 2021 would be better, but is this foreshadowing? And why do I hear boss music?
@Tsundoku Unfortunately, the Senate is still controlled by the Republicans. Plus, you need like a 2/3 vote anyway from the Senate to formally remove the President, so
Btw is one of those "poems in book form" poems?
22:17
@PrinceNorthLæraðr True, but voting against impeachment will expose them even more as the Trump Party instead of the GOP.
I'm not sure at this point some Republicans care
I mean, like, have you seen Ted Cruz
Yes, Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley share the blame and the guilt. (And Donald Trump Jr.)
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Adonais was published in book form on its own. (It's a bit longer than The Waste Land, which was also published as a book.)
22:39
@Tsundoku Okay
I don't understand Cruz. He ran against Trump, got verbally abused by Trump, refused to support Trump during the election, but after Trump gets elected decides to side with him, and then becomes one of his biggest supporters, and then two days ago denounces him again.
@PrinceNorthLæraðr It's called opportunism.
"Anyway the wind blows...."
"...doesn't really matter to me, to me"
22:55
@PrinceNorthLæraðr At the RNC's winter meeting on Friday, nobody condemned Trump for inciting the insurrection. (While the insurrection was going on, both Trump and Giuliani called a republican senator to object against the certification of Biden.)
sigh
Man, I should've kept up my German
Then I could go to Germany and study there and have free tuition ;-;
I am effectively monolingual over here. (With a smattering of words from various other languages, though not enough to matter)
@PrinceNorthLæraðr University is not entirely free, though. I don't know about schools.
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Where I work, students pay 70,00 + 15,00 + 120,40 euro per semester, which is peanuts compared to costs in many other countries.
are those commas supposed to be dots?
as in, is the first number seven-thousand or seventy?
Yes, in Europe we use commas where you use dots. So it's two hundred and five euro pus 40 eurocents.
23:07
Damnnnnn
It's $50,000, or 50.000 in European writing
Which is why many people in the USA start their working life with huge debts. But not in Germany.
At the university where I studied (in Belgium), you currently pay € 947.20 per year (i.e. two semesters). This is still an amount that you scrape together doing "student jobs".
It's about $30,000-$70,000 per year for private, $10,000-$20,000 for public
@Tsundoku Are you a professor?
23:23
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Researcher and sort of teaching assistant.
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Resources for learning German.
Skip the Mark Twain quote, though.
23:44
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Well, it's true only until Jan 20 or so. After that, the newly elected Georgians come on board and it's 50/50 with Kamala Harris being the tiebreaker. Ossock/Warnoff, baby!
@Tsundoku yes, every historian and social scientist has said so but the Republicans are doubling down
@PrinceNorthLæraðr How do you mean? It's 495 lines, which is long but not book-length
It was published as a stand-alone volume, though
oh nvm I see @Tsundoku already said that
@Tsundoku Trump called into that meeting and got applause and cheers. AFTER the autogolpe attempt
