@GarethRees Maybe they're acceptable for questions about the genre as a whole? Even if we shouldn't go and tag every question about any mystery novel with mystery-novels. Its use on story-ID questions might be a habit imported from Science Fiction & Fantasy (home site for several of our active story-ID users), since on that site (sub)genre tags are considered acceptable only on ID questions.

Which doesn't imply anything about how we should be using it here, of course.

That's the problem when the question/answer just generally is "should they be acceptable?".
