Q: Why does With Those We Love Alive ask the reader to draw sigils on their skin?

HamletWith Those We Love Alive is a work of interactive fiction published by Porpentine. You can read the work online. One of the unique features of the work is it asks the reader to draw sigils on their arm at very moments during the story. Here is one example of such an instruction: Draw a sigil...

@Emrakul I'm still midway through, but yeah the only question I have in mind right now is one on art style.
I hope we don't both ask the same question :p

@Bookworm when I have time, I am going to interact with this work and see if I can come up with something. At the very least, maybe my feelings on why.

Q: What's our elevator pitch?

Rand al'ThorThroughout SE history (e.g. The Real Essential Questions of Every Beta), there's been a lot of talk about providing an "elevator pitch" for a site. What is the site about, what's its goal, how would you describe it to someone unfamiliar with it or SE. Imagine you’ve just gotten on an elevator...

@Emrakul I asked a question about interactive fiction (e.g. video games) and it did not spark an intense scope discussion.
Of course, I asked a question about a very textual video game. A question about a shooter might do worse
@Ash for some reason I assumed you would have already read/played this.

Q: Should we be using comments as substitutes for answers?

HamletI've been noticing that this site has been using comments as substitutes for answers in quite a few questions. Examples: 1, 2. I've probably done this a few times myself. I think one explanation that I've seen is that the person commenting doesn't have time to do research and write a detailed, ...

Q: Why does "Ode to Joy"/Beethoven's Symphony #9 start with a reference to Greek mythology and only mention God towards the end?

EJoshuaSThe text of Beethoven's 9th Symphony was largely "borrowed" from the poem "Ode to Joy" by Friedrich Schiller. The text of the first verse of the poem (second verse of Beethoven's 9th symphony) is as follows (translation from Wikipedia): Joy, beautiful spark of divinity, Daughter from Elysi...

Q: What's the significance of the T. S. Eliot reference in Catch-22?

EJoshuaS "It takes brains not to make money," Colonel Cargill wrote in one of the homiletic memoranda he regularly prepared for circulation over General Peckem's signature. "Any fool can make money these days and most of them do. But what about people with talent and brains? Name, for example, one poet...

Q: Is there a contrast between Trofimov and Lopakhin in Anton Chekhov's 'The Cherry Orchard"?

JeminI am an intern who is teaching in high school in India. In the syllabus, I got across Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" in Hindi. After discussing the book with the students, I found out that there were two groups in the discussion. A group supporting Trofimov and the main character, well othe...

Someone's got to announce the next topic challenge so people can start getting it. Judging by the fact that there are 2 copies in my university library, seems like accessing the book isn't hard.

@Hamlet Not sure why you deleted your answer there, but I was actually thinking of asking you to hold off on answering for a while. Like I said, I'd like to get as many different answers as possible, and some people might be less likely to post one if they see an existing answer from a mod, especially one who's known to have strong opinions.
