@Tsundoku The Paul Vincent translation has:
> I suddenly think of my mother. It's lucky she has not witnessed this cheese catastrophe. Once upon a time, before she started picking kapok, she would have paid for those ten thousand cheeses to spare me this suffering.
What does the Flemish original have? twee? tien?

@Tsundoku Paul Vincent translates:
oh nvm I see what you mean. You're talking about the difference between the vague Brussels addresses and the very specific Bruges ones. Yep, the Vincent translation reproduces that as well.

@verbose The Dutch version has two thousand, not ten thousand. Otherwise, I wouldn't have brought this up.
@Bookworm Fi donc, HNQ!

@Tsundoku huh, interesting that the Vincent translation corrects the maths

@verbose Or he took too much liberty because he wasn't aware of the reason for the discrepancy. Elsschot reread Cheese at least two times: once to add Chapter XV and once again when the collected edition of his works was published in 1957. So I think the 2000 is completely intentional.

Because he doesn't hear back from them, he decides to visit his two representatives in Brussels, whose names are Noeninckx and Delaforge. In Sander Berg's translati...

Looks like CHEESE is not participating in the Cheese topic challenge.

"last seen more than four years ago." Maybe CHEESE has gone off
Laarmans would wonder whether he had been eaten by cheese worms.
Or eaten by a cheese dragon (another phrase that Laarmans uses).

According to the Dutch Wikipedia article on backgammon, painters used backgammon as a symbol for sloth, one of the seven deadly sins. Guess what Laarmans's colleagues gift him in Chapter XIII...
I wonder how many other little jokes and allusions Elsschot hid in Cheese.

(sigh) my library copy of Cheese is desperately overdue but I don't have the time to go up to the city until the week after next. I'm single handedly depriving the entire city and county of San Francisco of Cheese
maybe I could claim I'm helping mitigate the rodent problem?
