Q: Significance of trail of pebbles vs breadcrumbs?

Longfellow of the day.
I saw this over on Facebook. It reminded me of his "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls", and thus far I like "The Tide" more.
Maybe I should memorize "The Rainy Day" to get its taste better.

@Bookworm People again answer questions about Grimm's fairy tales in total oblivion of the fact that those tales went through several editions and thus without checking how the tale in the question evolved. (And people upvote the answers with the same lack of knowledge.)

@Tsundoku The last time I looked into the textual history of the Brothers Grimm, it took me a long time to track down a digitized copy of the 1812 Kinder- und Haus-märchen
But I wouldn't blame anyone for giving up!

@Tsundoku both that there are 27 distinct ideas and that the novel uses only one of them are opinions, surely? And any answer specifying which would be an opinion about which one. Reading the question and the preface I could make distinct arguments for several.
