oh no, that can't be right, we say "eponymous heroine" when talking about the lead character in Austen's Emma, for instance.

@Randal'Thor True, and I hesitated about including it. It's also the only one on my list that's set in "our world," and it doesn't follow the standard "farm boy hero" tropes. I ended up putting it in because 1) it's got that feel of "What interesting things can we do with this magic system?" (e.g. Strange giving himself a controlled dose of insanity so he can see fairies), and 2) a friend first recommended it to me around the time I was reading Inheritance.

I was surprised, actually, at how hard it was to decide which books to recommend. Most of my recommendations aren't YA, which feels like a shortcoming; but a lot of the YA fantasy I've read doesn't have quite the same intricacy of worldbuilding as Inheritance.

@Randal'Thor Bartimaeus is pretty great. It's been a while since I read it, but I haven't really been able to find any books with the same brand of humor since (although I haven't done much reading in the past few years, so that doesn't mean much)
