@Bookworm Hoping for a second Gareth answer to this one, analysing the accent and what it's meant to portray, like he did for Aphrodite's wool worker before.
I'm not confident enough to be sure exactly what sort of accent it's supposed to be, and I don't know the Iliad well enough to know what sort of character Poseidon is disguised as (beyond "gaffer" as said in the OP's quote).
Tsundoku's answer is good and solves the main question of "what does this mean", but I think the answer to the subquestion "why is this translated in such an incomprehensible manner" will be perhaps even more interesting, perhaps more than .
