i haven't read the old man and the sea, but i got about halfway through "for whom the bell tolls" and then gave it up.
when i'm 300 pages in and nothing has happened yet, i tend to get a wee bit bored ;)
i've found in general i prefer sci-fi/fantasy/mythology for fun-reading, with some history occasionally thrown in.

I don't think it's necessarily an opinion-based question. One can rank novels, at least relatively, according to their difficulty. Tolkien's works would be a good example
