Q: Short story (or maybe a small book) about two students kidnapping a teacher

Sean DugganI think I read this in elementary school, so it was probably late 1980s to early 1990s (I was in elementary school between 1985 and 1992) in Ashland, KY. I don't think it was illustrated, or if it was, it was just a few sparse pen-and-ink drawings to set the scene. The basic plotline is that the ...

Q: How much of Ariande Oliver's character self-insertion by Agatha Christie?

lzamThe recurring character Ariande Oliver (present in a number of Agatha Christie's novels) seems to be at least partially self-insertion by Christie (At the very least, both write mystery fiction stories featuring a foreign detective). Besides this superficial resemblance, how much does she actuall...

Q: Meaning of "all the boards did shrink" in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

CopperKettleFrom The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink. What is the meaning of this phrase in plain English? What are "boards" here? Sides of the ship? Both sides of the ship were trying to ge...

@Zyerah Sorry if I pissed you off. I wasn't trying to complain, just asking.
Is there really an SE-wide policy that single-sentence answers are VLQ? I know there are some sites where such answers get deleted as a matter of course (due to meta consensus), but I've also seen some where very short answers are left undeleted or even upvoted. I actually hunted around for definitive SE policy on answer deletion when writing my recent meta answer, but the best I could find was "delete NaAs or unimprovable answers, maybe more according to site-specific policy".
I do sympathise with the fact that whatever you do, someone is going to complain. The curse of carrying a diamond ;-)
Could you or @Mithrandir possibly put a comment on those deleted answers to encourage the answerers to edit and improve? I feel like Kimchilover at least might be willing to do that.

A: One-line answers

Tim PostI'll answer this by explaining how I handle these when they reach the moderator queue. We see a few distinct types. @Randal'Thor I've left a comment.

Thanks! :-D

I've edited and VTROed this question. Thoughts, anyone?

I wouldn't have closed it in the first place, but I don't want to hammer it open.

It did seem unclear at first, but I think there's a reasonable question here. This is a topic on which people must have written a great deal, in everything from blogs to academic papers, so it should be possible for someone to give a really good answer.
But then, a lot of the people I'd point to as good potential answerers for this (Hamlet, Christophe, Fabjaja) were also VTCers, so I'm not sure.
The votes on it have certainly turned around fast. It's gone from -2 to +2 in fifteen minutes.

Well, someone seems to have reversed their vote.

Q: Meaning of "a Pygmalion whose statues warm beneath his art"

CopperKettleFrom Byron's Don Juan: An English lady ask'd of an Italian, What were the actual and official duties Of the strange thing some women set a value on, Which hovers oft about some married beauties, Called "Cavalier servente?" -- a Pygmalion Whose statues warm (I fear, al...

@Randal'Thor I was originally confused as to what the question was asking as I thought Tess and Jane were quite unrelated characters to link together which is why I VTCed, but your edits have made it a lot clearer. I've now reversed my vote and VTROed as I think answers could go into some interesting points :-)

Also, I just posted a new question, @Fabjaja ;-)

Q: What makes the writing style of The Dynasts so distinctive?

Rand al'ThorReading Poetry Foundation's page on Thomas Hardy, I came across this description of his epic drama The Dynasts, set during the Napoleonic Wars and published in 1904-1908: Hardy also pioneered a new kind of verse. According to John Wain’s introduction to the 1965 St. Martin’s Press edition of ...

@Randal'Thor (cleaned up with one last edit and reopened)

Thanks! :-D

@Randal'Thor Excellent question! I have to admit, I haven't read The Dynasts, so I'm not sure I'm qualified for an answer...

@Mithrandir I have helped myself in this case by moving mostly to ebooks so I don't have to worry about shelf space

user15026
(although ebooks are frighteningly easy for me to acquire so I have a massive TBR pile now)

I have a couple hundred ebooks as well.

user15026
I think last count I had almost 3k ebooks scattered across my 3 drives before I consolidated. Mind you, that's stuff for myself and various family members and friends whose stuff I manage because they're not as good with technology.

Q: Meaning of "and those things which for an instant clip enjoyment's wings" in Byron's Don Juan

CopperKettleFrom Byron's Don Juan: We left our hero, Juan, in the bloom Of favouritism, but not yet in the blush; And far be it from my Muses to presume (For I have more than one Muse at a push) To follow him beyond the drawing-room: It is enough that Fortune found him flush O...

@Mithrandir I have heard good things about The Name of the Rose.

That's good. I picked these out based on what I thought I'd like out of what was there, and I wouldn't want to be disappointed in myself :P

Umberto Eco gets on my nerves but that's a personal preference ;)

user61230
I've also only read Foucault's Pendulum, so I might be somewhat biased.

8:42 PM
@Zyerah Well, I appreciated The Name of the Rose much more than Foucault's Pendulum, which was a bit...odd.
You won't get around elaborate treatises on the intricacies of Christianity and its various flavours during the late middle ages, though.

Q: Short story: lone gunman disrupts an economy

GeorgeBI'm trying to remember a short story I read in high school about a sniper or lone gunman who fires into a parade of crowded people, killing dozens and, through a chain of events, disrupts the entire political and economic stability of the country (which was his intent from the start).
