I just left a comment on this question suggesting it might be a better fit at academia stack exchange, but then I realized I don't really have a good sense for what kinds of questions they encourage there. I'm also not totally clear on what our own policies are regarding a question like this. Does anybody know more about this than I do?

I don't have a strong opinion about the suitability of this question for MathOverflow, but in case the community decides to close the question, I'll suggest that another place this question might be well-received would be academia stack exchange, although to be honest I am not familiar with exactly what sort of questions they encourage there. — Tim Campion ♦ 19 mins ago
Do keep in mind that career or personal advice from strangers on the internet should always at the very least be supplemented by advice from people you know who have a better understanding of your particular situation. You should discuss this sort of thing with an advisor / mentor / professor / more senior student / other trusted and more experienced person at your institution or elsewhere. — Tim Campion ♦ 3 mins ago

Q: I want to enter graduate school in pure math. Is doing REU in “mathematical modeling” a good idea? Is it essential skill to learn?

jk001(please let me know if this question is not suitable here) Hello! I'm an undergraduate rising senior majoring in mathematics and it seems that I got rejected by REU that is held in my university over the summer. I was late in the game and I haven't had any research before. The only research I can...

I actually kind of expected to find general guidance on meta speaking against questions asking for career advice, but I am not finding it as I search.

@TimCampion You could always ask in their chatroom - The Ivory Tower.

thanks, that does seem prudent
I kind of expected us to have our own settled precedent for things like this which I was just ignorant of, but maybe things are not so well-defined.

As s side note, this seems like something which would be a bit more suitable in the main chatroom rather than the editors' lounge - since it is not really related to tagging and editing.
But it's not really that important. (Neither of the two rooms is very active.)

Ok thanks.
I did end up asking in their chat as Martin suggested, and I got a pretty quick reply explaining that indeed the question would probably be a bit too specific to personal details to be suitable for their site.

I've asked a meta question about this.

@TimCampion A minor typo: geneneral. BTW would maybe be a suitable tag for that question?

@MartinSleziak Thanks! In general, I value your expertise in these things a great deal and I would not object at all if you were to go ahead and make edits to posts more frequently along the lines of your ever-helpful comments. I think you have enough rep to edit other users' posts?

Yes, and clearly I do edit quite often.

of course!

OTOH, when viewing the recently active question (which is probably the tab most users look at), the name of the most recent editor is displayed.

I see. That point hadn't occurred to me.

I guess that people are a bit more likely to look at the post if they see your name rather than mine.
Still, as I said, often I simply go ahead and edit.
