It seems that the number of questions with deprecated tags is more-or-less steady. You can find here stats from August 25, June 2, May 1 this year.

There were 1000 questions with deprecated tags in August 2017. Now there are 882 questions with deprecated tags.

Here is breakdown by tags:

abstract-algebra has 325 questions, 180 after removing most common algebra-related tags, 101 with no top-level tag.

discrete-mathematics has 171 questions, 84 after removing co.combinatorics and 45 with no top-level tag at all.

geometry has 397 questions, 246 without the most frequent geometry-related tags and 147 with no top-level tag at all.

There are also some roomba-eligible questions in the above counts, but the previous counts included those as well.

As usually, I'll remind that it would be relatively easy to prevent these tags from being added to new questions: The existing deprecated tags should be blacklisted. (Like, to add a recent example, YCor in the question Vertex Connectivity of the Hypercube mathoverflow.net/posts/316086/revisions .)

There is 98046 questions in total, 76289 questions which have at least one top-level tag, 81044 questions if we count also (linear-algebra), (graph-theory) and (set-theory).

So 22.19% of questions have no top-level tag, and it is 17.34% of questions if we take the less-strict interpretation.

specific-question The question English translation of Serre's paper Gèbres has been recently bumped by adding the gerbes tag. I have added translation. The question is still missing a top-level tag - in case somebody knows this area perhaps they can choose one.

@PraphullaKoushik "gerbes" is a French word, literally used in mathematical English. "gèbres" is a truncation of "algèbres", which is the French translation of "algebra", so would be "gebra" in English by obvious analogy. — YCor 23 secs ago

I wondered what happens with the taxonomist badge for discrete-mathematics and abstract-algebra if the tags get removed. But I see that it can happen that this badge is displayed with "No longer available' instead of the tag name.
