@naturallyInconsistent this is a common theme around most math students. math people generally neglect drill math, which I think is a shame. you know banach fixed point theorem, location of roots theorem, and you cant approximate the root of this equation I am giving you? why do you know this then!!! ?

that's a shame. crystalline physics is beautiful. And you get to see a far better understanding of the stuff you see and touch every day
Aug 11, 2024 17:23
You're probably right regarding the standardized testing explanation. Kind of a shame though that we're overcomplicating introductory physics classes with an overload of rather useless terms
May 14, 2024 08:24
You lose all credibility if you start doing things like this, it's a real shame he started going overboard saying this stuff
Feb 21, 2023 15:24
it's not a shame not to learn it, but then you shouldn't expect to make any sort of meaningful statements about extensions to this theory :P
Jul 1, 2022 21:53
indeed, imo there's absolutely no shame in mispronouncing something you read
Dec 31, 2021 06:32
This aspect isn't emphasised at introductory level. which is a shame because I think it helps you grasp what is going on.
Jan 8, 2021 10:40
hm, I'd argue with you about it, but the device says you're not real, what a shame

So you can at least build the generators of $G_2$ in terms of $SO(7)$ generators and have a plausible explanation for it, it's a real shame an easy picture like this doesn't arise for the others
Sep 13, 2020 16:47
it is to shame you for your short answer
Jul 10, 2020 15:49
Shame on you Ethan Siegel. Resorting to click bait is not a good look for a respected physicist.
Jun 17, 2020 23:14
It's a shame so many people think you have to be born a certain way to become a great scientist, what separates an undergraduate from a world-leading scientist is, largely, tens of thousands of hours of work and practice.
Apr 20, 2020 14:29
@Slereah shame on you and your technicalities :p
Apr 3, 2020 11:27
Yeah, the turbulence example is more technical because it's graduate level, but it's still a terminology question. But hey, great time to remember: fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!
Mar 6, 2020 18:07
@JakeRose that's a shame - you'd probably find it both neat and useful
Sep 11, 2019 06:02
@NovaliumCompany it seems a shame, but as long as you had fun it wasn't a waste of time.
Sep 9, 2019 11:10
@NovaliumCompany Oh well. That's a shame. Maybe John Rennie has some suggestions. I guess you could try to remove the water from the final mixture, but that won't be easy.

@TaeNyFan you're welcome. It was a shame your question had to be closed, but it wasn't suitable for the main site. But this chat room is great for questions like this. You can ask anything here :-)
Jun 9, 2019 15:54
@AbhasKumarSinha That's a shame. ChatJax works ok for me on this phone. What browser are you using?
May 22, 2019 23:40
@knzhou It's a shame too. The reason why the density buoyancy relationship works with regards to volume* is one of the things I've really enjoyed understanding intuitively. When you realize that it depends on volume because the height adds to the hydrostatic pressure difference, and the area means more force due to pressure difference, it's directly proportional to displaced volume; for any closed surface
May 12, 2019 20:01
And, I mean, it's okay if you don't. Not everyone needs to be a quantum field theorist. There's no shame in not understanding it

@CaptainBohemian yes the Msc/ Phd system worldwide varies and in many places leaves much to be desired to say the least. academia sometimes has large amts of $$$ sloshing around (ie/ eg increasingly more corporatized model) but sometimes not a lot of it goes into science/ edu. think its a shame that many highly motivated/ educated ppl cant continue in the field of their choice, theres been many discussions about this over the years in the room. do you have a Bsc?
Jan 9, 2019 03:47
gentlemen I must bid good evening to you all. As much as students think instructors give them homework it's really the other way around and I must do mine in order to avoid shame tomorrow.

"We will not here review the results which by now should be known to everybody (if not, shame on you!), and refer the forgetful reader to the appropriate references [that's what all these funny little numbers are for]"

Fifty-five years old and died unexpectedly from depression. If you'll permit the use of strong language for emphasis: that's a fucking shame.
Aug 17, 2018 20:13
Do you shame him everyday? :P
Jul 9, 2018 21:34
That's a real shame that you can't like directly 'derive' it
Jun 6, 2018 00:15
but you ruined my joke anyways! So shame on you.

@JohnRennie it's a shame you have already eaten. Had you not eaten, I would have gone even more detail. :P
Apr 4, 2018 17:35
Ah but you're forgetting the big conspiracy, Lagrangian's are a lie used to convince you not to feel shame at night, but there is a secret reality purposely being stymied by big Lagrangian
Feb 13, 2018 21:57
It's a shame how complicated things get when you leave the realm of baby wave functions, e.g. the Harmonic oscillator path integral, getting the wave functions from this is pretty insane, haven't tried to write it up yet but it looks huge
Jan 31, 2018 22:06
It's a shame I didn't make a question out of that because you could have earned some easy answer points there :)
Jan 25, 2018 20:48

:-) Dang, what a shame. How old were you?
Dec 12, 2017 17:43
@vzn I am well aware that you're not averse to shallow debate using overhyped terms and inflammatory language. However, I have yet to see you engage meaningfully, even once, in a serious debate about your claims once any of their issues are brought up. I think it's a shame, because you do bring up interesting topics, but then the only thing you do with them is scupper the discussion.

@dmckee I won't be here before Christmas, I leave for Brazil next week :( It's such a shame, Camarillo is like right next to me, I would totally drive down to see you! I totes owe you a beer after all the C you taught me :P
Nov 26, 2017 17:42
@Phase what a shame you edited that. I was wondering if you liked dressing up as Wonder Woman or Supergirl :-)
Nov 21, 2017 21:03
@Blue thats snoopy, shame on you

1) That's incredibly stupid of the school. 2) Shame on you.

It's a shame you don't know more about what your programming courses are going to cover or you could download the software for them now.

@0celo7 You do not know that all massless vector bosons are gauge bosons and protected from acquiring mass by gauge symmetry? Shame on you! ;P
Jul 17, 2017 16:15
@ACuriousMind Take a look at this
Jul 17, 2017 16:12
Well, you can't be surprised that saying "shame on you" to someone for their interests didn't elicit a positive reaction now, can you?
