> Sheffield also argues that such ecosystems can "educate reluctant and loyal party members and maintain negative partisanship, meaning that people who dislike the leaders will still vote for the party," which he says was key to former President Donald Trump's 2024 election victory, as there was a significant chunk of voters who voted for him despite personally disliking him.

I want to keep it light, at least for the first one. So far, I'm leaning towards the Jon Stewart post-election video. John Oliver hasn't done one yet, has he?

> Harris' campaign “knocked more than two million doors in the weekend leading up to Election Day, which is two million more doors than Bob Brady’s organization can claim to have knocked during his entire tenure as party chairman,” McPhillips told the paper.

> In Missouri, voters approved a constitutional amendment that prohibits ranked choice voting. And Arizona voters turned down a major election overhaul package that included open primaries and ranked choice voting.

@Cerberus Here's the story about that guy: As Election Day Nears, Yard Signs Disappear

> A state's primary election or caucus is usually an indirect election: instead of voters directly selecting a particular person running for president, they determine the number of delegates a candidate will receive from their respective state for each party's national convention. These delegates then in turn select their party's presidential nominee.

@Cerberus "Parliamentary elections" does not have any meaning that I understand if it means anything other than the election of the legislature.
Nov 7, 2024 01:48
Well, none of it matters now. We may never have another election to fix anything anyway.
Nov 7, 2024 01:47
At least that's one possible reading of the election results.

So it turns out it was the Democrats' fault in this election. The turnout on that side was 12-14 millions less than it was in 2020. All because of Gaza? Because Harris wasn't left enough for them? I fucking despair.

@ohwilleke - I think you may have mixed up the numbers. "In Dearborn, where 55% of the residents are of Middle Eastern descent, Trump won with 42.48% of the vote over Vice President Kamala Harris[...]In the November 2020 election, Biden received 68.8% in Dearborn while Trump received 29.9%." That's the approximately 13% difference. The value of 36.26%, at least according to the article, corresponds to Harris.

@Fredy31 Many of them were so stupid and ignorant that they had to Google just before election day to know Biden was not on ballots.

Q: How can voting by mail provide voting secrecy in the US elections?

gmauchAs a foreigner watching the unfolding US elections, it really strikes me as odd that voting by mail is a valid way to vote when, IMHO, it cannot be guaranteed to be secret. I'm assuming secrecy is paramount in every state election. In fact, checking the article II, section 7 of the constitution o...

Q: How can it be decided that a candidate has won a state even though not all the votes have been reported?

CrSb0001I am currently watching the 2024 USA election right now, and am currently noticing something strange: Even though not all of the votes have been reported (in really any state), it is still apparently really clear who has won said state enough to award that candidate electoral votes. For example, ...

Doing the right thing often is not popular. What's why I (behind closed doors) speak up against SE mods having to run for re-election.

probably a lesser slap in the face but idk if it would have flipped the election at the end of the day

Q: What Does "State of Democracy" mean?

RyanAccording to this article by CBS News, one of the most important political issues for U.S. voters right now is the "state of democracy." Early exit polls show the state of democracy and the economy are the top issues for 2024 voters. The economy is the top issue for Trump voters, followed by imm...

> For nearly a decade he has tapped into America’s id: a long and painful racial history of progress and backlash, stoked anew by the election of Obama and white Christians finding themselves in the minority. Xenophobia is at the heart of his political identity. In addition, his campaign spent millions on ads fuelling hysteria about transgender rights (“Kamala’s agenda is they/them, not you”).

I don't understand why less people voted in this election, compared to 2020.

> Democrats have once again decided to place the very risky bet that catering to moderate, college-educated voters will win more support than it loses in working-class defections. Leading up to election day, they’ve put most of their chips on a message that warns voters of the threat posed by a second Trump presidency. If our study’s results are any indication, it’s a gamble that could backfire massively.

Q: Is metaphysical thumb on the scale possible in the US election?

TheMatrix Equation-balanceThe logic is simple (I hope). If there is metaphysical influence in our reality, it should be detectable in this critical election. The question is, how to look for it, in a scientifically prudent way?

As we get closer to the election, it might be worth unfreezing the US Politics room (previously 2020 US Election discussion) and making it a dedicated 2024 US Election discussion room; give me a ping if anyone feels it's necessary. I think we're fine in here for now given there's not a lot of other discussion going on.
Nov 6, 2024 12:31
Somebody created a new room called 2024 US Election - but so far no messages in that room.

Q: Campaigning in a polling place

Hagen von EitzenAs far as I know, campaigning is not allowed at a polling station and within a certain radius around them. How strict is it what counts as campaigning in that context? For example, from what a news report I just watched, it looked to me as if one of the candidates of a current election cast their...
