There is some great reading on sock puppets here which delves into identification, legitimate and illegitimate uses of socks.

@ArchismanPanigrahi It was a battle but I see your easter egg question has finally been reopened :). I admire your persistence...
Oct 10 2:41 AM
@mpboden Sometimes the questions drift a long way from Ubuntu but the canonical page: askubuntu.com/help/on-topic says that this is allowable: 'Running third-party applications on Ubuntu.'

@ArchismanPanigrahi Good call on the Facebook question. The currently supported question should be reopened and then close the obsolete one because it's much less confusing that way, so I did it that way. Also this will link back to the currently supported question because the legacy question has a higher visibility in search engines.

I have banged on about privacy in this room but perhaps I can share this real life image of @Zanna and myself engaged in Mod duties:

@andrew.46 we don't usually migrate to SO as it's considered equivalent to throwing OP to the lions and then yourself along with them hahahaha

Be on the lookout for defacing attempts like this one in protest of the OpenAI announcement. Searching for "OpenAI" and sorting by "Active" every so often would probably be good.

This Q/A exemplifies the teamwork on AU! Everyone learns from each other. There are zero down-votes on all the answers. I'm proud to be a part of the AU community!

Locking is a funny thing and @Zanna may have some thoughts as well. I use it in a time limited manner if there is a dispute in the comments that is becoming too heated and less and less about the question at hand. I also use it if a question or answer is being further discussed on Meta and needs to stay as is for a period while under discussion. Also for posts that should not normally be edited: the only example I have at the moment is the 'in-memoriam' post on Meta.

@stumblebee No, tp was wrong in this case. Smokey is trained to catch spam, not offensive words. But offensive words are frequently an indicator for spam, that's why Smokey has this reason, not because posts containing offensive words should be flagged as spam and fed as tp to Smokey. So since the post was clearly not spam, fp was the feedback that should have been given (and rightly was by the two users).

@ArchismanPanigrahi Thanks for this, I have sorted this one out. And thanks for the Meta post, hopefully it will draw some interest, I have poked a few of those with great interest in AI generation to hopefully participate.

Courtesy of Makyen (thanks!!) SmokeDetector now interacts with Raiders of the Lost Downboat. This is fantastic for this chat room and adds a significant extra dimension to our work here. Access to this functionality on Raiders is list based and there is a solid core of longer term, reliable users on this list already. If you wish to be added to the list just grab an AU Mod and it can be organised...

Our treatment of AI generated content is currently in turmoil as Stack Exchange pursues its own unilateral agenda. Details on MetaSE. Regardless of the considerable confusion and community anger that has been generated by the actions of SE, the message for AU editors remains clear: if a post on AU is of low quality it should be removed and if a user posts a flood of low quality material this merits removal of these posts as well as suspension. In the interim this will be our way forward.

@BeastOfCaerbannog I do not like to second guess the decisions of other Mods, particularly when they are much more experienced than myself. However I also have no problems altering such decisions when there is a subsequent need, as in this case :)
Apr 5 5:43 AM
Locking the post indefinitely is an extreme measure for such a case and not required at all. It's an unneeded authoritative escalation that came again by a mod who often overuses their mod power to state authority in situations which can be solved in other ways or have even already been solved. I don't like this behavior.

@sotirov For questions? Needs Details or Clarity. A comment indicating the issue would be good too, but that's not required

I also did some minor edits, the most important of which was removing the explicit mention of "Question 1" and "Question 2", so that "Needs more focus" CVs won't get attracted by the question (it has one such CV).

Q: Goodbye Gunnar Hjalmarsson, 1958.10.06 - 2023.12.20

andrew.46The Ask Ubuntu Community has lost a long time contributor from its ranks of esteemed contributors with the recent death of Gunnar Hjalmarsson. Gunnar was a highly valued contributor to Ask Ubuntu for 10 years and 9 months. His profile tells us that on Ask Ubuntu he 'reached' 4.4m people, crafted ...
