@anki This was a big issue a couple months ago. But everyone who has been writing and talking about it, completely misled readers and watchers imo. The issue isn't Apple. The issue is OCSP. Your browser does the exact same thing for every website you go to. That's regardless of what browser and what OS you use.

Just walked in to an Apple store with a Lightening cable (one pin corroded), walked out five minutes later with a free brand new one. This is why I'm an Apple customer :D

I bet Apple’s new “don’t call me, I’ll call you” feature is going to be very appealing to people not in their initial target market…

Try editing posts instead of just flagging them for moderator attention. More and more I'm just making tweaks to posts to improve them when dealing with moderator flags and that's not at all what moderator flags are supposed to be used for.

Has anyone seen a nice visual mapped of the app launch process and daemons and calls on macOS lately? If you thought launchd was complicated, the new process is quite intricate.

Q: Old versions of the OS X Human Interface Guidelines

bjenks22446I'm looking to write a paper on how the OS X user interface has evolved from OS X Leopard all the way through to OS X Yosemite and am seeking guidance on where to find older versions of the OS X Human Interface Guidelines documentation. The following data should aid in the search in the circumst...

quick tip you may or may not know, if you are unsure whether time machine is actually doing something or is frozen during the "Preparing backup" stage, you can go into your backup drive, find the most recent .inProgress file > right click > show package contents > find the .log file and run sudo tail -f /path/to/the/log/file.log. You will see very detailed progress information there. The tail -f updates the console live.

So @DougMasters, the point you made about acquiring points is now pointless? That’s a pointed statement, but I see your point. Glad i was able to point you in the right direction. 🤣

And don't get discouraged when you get a down vote. We do have our "Negative Nellies" that will down vote without leaving a comment as to why they think you're wrong. Ignore them! You learn by participating. You learn even more when you make mistakes. I'm super enthused that you've found this site a place to learn and you're embracing topics that's outside your "zone" so-to-speak.

I love folders. They make me happy on iOS and iPadOS - I have two screens on my phone (three since the first one has nothing on it except the dock and my background : - )

@Josh computers are the WORST - they do exactly what we tell them to, not what we want them to do.

The system is really balanced. All new people do scrape up reputation and it takes quite a long time to feel you can spend some rep just to push down one post. By the time you hit 10k you're well to the point about realizing that reputation are "fake internet points" and worth spending to put a bounty on someone else's great question - helping to surface good content and helping to point out weak / wrong content.

I just gotta say, it's amazing the difference between the official Apple forums and Ask Different. Half of the questions over there (and half of the answers) wouldn't pass muster here at all; they're just "Whine whine whine, it's broke but I won't give any important details, I should have stuck with Windows 10." Coming here for answers is a real pleasure.

With UI Scripting you can use Accessibility Inspector to ascertain the hierarchy. You can also query the app's UI element to ascertain additional information. You can also use the Watch Me Do action in Automator to get the code you did and convert it to a better format as I did. I use all three methods depending on my needs at that moment.

Also, I have a new rule on voting. If a question is worth answering, it's worth a vote, up or down. If I find a question with no votes, but 3 answers, I upvote it regardless, because if it wasn;t a good one people wouldn't have answered it.

Maybe you’re not searching for the right term, that will help dozens of people. Maybe the results just can’t be found - that will also help people. And the best part, is everyone who uses the same search term in the future will now find our Q&A indexed by future google and get better help. Win / win / win.
Dec 3, 2021 17:37
I just want to remind people. We love questions where you show your research. If you asks a question like “I’m trying to do this. I searched for these terms, here is why the top two results (and link to those results) don’t help me” we can provide expert guidance.

@JBis don’t forget two things. 1. We aim to be the place google sends people for their searches 2. Something that’s easily searched usually makes a great Q&A here

@JoyJin you were targeted for votes and the automatic system corrected that behavior. You did nothing wrong, and it was a minor infraction by the voter in question.

It was a joint decision, but I was in favor of adding people before too long. Having new people rotate in is the best way I know to keep the governance fresh and share knowledge before we have someone step down
