@RebeccaChernoff I probably would not spend more time than I already do on the site, seeing as a lot of time is spent here, but more of my attention would be focused on mod duties and making sure everything is going smoothly

How much time do you think you'll spend modding?
3
Jan 31, 2011 15:46
Yeah I think we all know we're basically just signing up for a lot of grunt work, not glory

Jan 31, 2011 15:45
Moderators are not usually power-hungry people - they're maintenance staff, and that's important to remember

I'll quote my answer which I posted in the Meta Q&A post

. I can understand the concerns about going all-guns-blazing if I get elected - that's not going to happen because I've overseen moderator election at another discussion forum (where I'm a moderator), and my first piece of advice to the newly elected moderators was:

Don't go at a full blast - wait for a bit, see how others handle things, get your feet wet and then apply the same.

I've approached the same tactic when I hit the various privilege stage - 500/3k/10k. And if I get elected, I will continue with the same.

And does everyone think they're ready to moderate, especially when you haven't had access to many of the moderator tools or even close votes for some time? And why would we expect anyone to 'magically' use these tools more after becoming a mod?
3
Jan 31, 2011 15:28
In fact, if I'm not elected, I'll probably work twice as hard to get to 10k :)

Jan 31, 2011 15:27
If you're not elected, will you take a break from SU or will you just carry on like before?
3
Jan 31, 2011 15:21
I have a question. What are your thoughts on the new "anyone can edit" feature that's under development?
3
Jan 31, 2011 15:07
(oh, sorry. Sitting down, shutting up and listening)

Welcome to the Super User Town Hall Chat
3
Jan 31, 2011 14:45
I will be making a Digest version of this Town Hall, as I did with the StackOverflow Town Hall Chat.

@IvoFlipse Not if you want to use them. ZOMGWTFBBQ!!!!111!!

Jan 31, 2011 16:10
Right, sorry, probably rushed in here a little early before was ready to actually join in (was being harassed by my daughter), guess I'll quickly work through as many questions as I can...?
2
Jan 31, 2011 16:04
In final thoughts, I just want to say that I will continue doing what I already do. If I become a mod then I will have greater tools at my disposal... if not I'll just keep being @IvoFlipse slave and doing his bidding and maybe @Sathya's as well...

Jan 31, 2011 16:02
@Josh: thanks for putting the Digest together for all of us! :)

studiohack wishes he could star @nhinkle's comment

@MichaelMrozek I feel it is a responsibility and a privilege to be moderator. That said, I will need to watch my actions more closely to make sure that I don't create problems or irritate other users.

Jan 31, 2011 15:51
(basically, the only days I'm not on SU at all are days when I literally have no internet access, like when I'm on vacation camping in the middle of nowhere. and then I think to myself, "dang, now I don't get that fanatic badge!")

Jan 31, 2011 15:47
just stars things instead of always saying agreed

Jan 31, 2011 15:45
now for the true test: how fast can @DMA57361 read everything above and respond to every question? :P
2
Jan 31, 2011 15:43
sometimes we have to act on our own instrincts, without community interaction (for what, I don't know necessarily), but then that's where being responsible for your actions comes in

There's an iffy tag on a couple dozen questions. Another tag is close in meaning to it. Both suck though. How do you handle the tags and/or the questions? Merge? Delete? Close? Ask Meta.SU?
2
Jan 31, 2011 15:38
If it takes some learning, wouldn't it be wiser to first gain access to the tools at hand before jumping in for the real deal?
2
Jan 31, 2011 15:37
Note that there is a private chat room for mods from all the sites, for asking general mod questions. We're not hanging you out to dry.
2
Jan 31, 2011 15:35
Let's say you've just been elected as a new moderator, what initial approach would you take? Will you immediately go moderate the site? Will you start bookmarking important pages? Will you talk with the other moderators? ...?
2
Jan 31, 2011 15:34
@RandolphPotter surely you must have some reasons why you think yourself more suitable than @Sathya or @studiohack even though those two clearly have the most edits and close votes
2
Jan 31, 2011 15:28
@random life goes on, I carry on as usual, pestering mods with my flags :P

Jan 31, 2011 15:25
@MichaelMrozek I would keep an eye out for a while. If the user's comments actually were inflammatory, I would consider either talking to them in chat (if they weren't too bad), or emailing them directly if necessary, to explain that we really appreciate all their hard work and want to commend that, but that some users don't feel comfortable with their comments and that we would appreciate if they would tone it down a bit. If they were just unpopular but perfectly reasonable comments... then that's ok
2
Jan 31, 2011 15:25
@MichaelMrozek Wow that's a great question... and it's a situation that needs to be dealt with delicately. I feel that the user should be warned to stay away from such actions and to bring those comments to possibly the CHAT instead of cluttering the comments
2
Jan 31, 2011 15:19
Don't forget that as a 3k user can only vote to close or reopen once per question, a mod coming along to "wipe away the votes" removes the chance for that first party of 3k users to close again

Jan 31, 2011 12:41
@RebeccaChernoff - just to confirm that I will not be attending today. Although, I might be able to turn up towards the very end... but I imagine this might be more disruptive than helpful.

@jrg In my experience I try to reason with a user, if that fails, ask someone else to try it (if required) and else, well you shouldn't really argue with a moderator :P
Jul 18, 2012 20:03
thanks candidates for taking the time out to come here and answer our questions.
Jul 18, 2012 19:58
As moderator, how would encourage new users participation?
Jul 18, 2012 19:58
The blog has been slowing down to a cripple, do you have any plans w.r.t. to blowing new life into the blog?
Jul 18, 2012 19:13
@Sathya My most upvoted answer was deleted because the question was off-topic. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I learned a valuable lesson about the scope of the site that day.
Jul 18, 2012 19:08
@TimStone You'll often see me helping new users by editing their posts, leaving comments, or explaining basic etiquette to them. If they have questions that simply aren't a good fit for Super User or Stack Exchange in general, I'll try to point them to a better place to ask.
Jul 18, 2012 19:05
@nhinkle I always felt that with a certain reputation level you become a representative for the site, even without being a moderator. Having a diamond next to the name would not change that feeling of responsibility. So, this would be nothing new, I guess.
Jul 18, 2012 19:03
I spy among us, in no particular order, the following candidates: @Luke, @danielBeck, @slhck, @OliverSalzburg, @DragonLord, @soandos. (@SimonSheehan and @KronoS are unable to attend)
Jul 18, 2012 19:03
@nhinkle If I was elected, I would be very confident in my prior judgement regarding these topics. Thus, I doubt I would act differently. When in doubt, I would rely on my team mates before making unjust descicions. I would handle the user same way as I handle other disruptive users. I don't think it would be wise to classify users by their contributions.
Jan 31, 2011 16:43
@Troggy A little amount of humour is always nice. Trouble is what's "a little" for someone might be too much for others.
Jan 31, 2011 16:42
@TomWij find and use the communication channels between moderators (new and old) - the worse thing for the site is a moderator team that doesn't work together (or even worse is if they work against one another)
Jan 31, 2011 16:38
> Get a Mac, problem solved
Jan 31, 2011 16:29
@random Moderators should have the binding vote. Moderators are supposed to direct the community in what's acceptable or not. A binding vote generally does have the authoritative vote
Jan 31, 2011 16:28
I would rather the mods let the community handle it initially. If they need to then step in with the hard vote. If you;re not sure enough to cast a binding vote then best to leave it. IMHO
Jan 31, 2011 16:07
A big thanks to all the candidates!
Jan 31, 2011 16:04
Closing statements: thanks everybody for your support and thank you to everyone for the great questions and feedback. I believe we have a bunch of great candidates here, and wish everybody the best of luck in the election. :)

Final thought: I'm a good janitor
