yea, college taught me how to think critically and problem solve
Feb 11, 2011 01:46
LOL. I've had my mind on something practical for so long, it's hard for me to think about something like that...
Feb 10, 2011 23:36
doesn't something like creativepro.com/article/build-a-tilt-shift-camera-lens-peanuts also pretty much make it a pseudo bellows for macro work?
Feb 10, 2011 20:08
it is a place where we get to be users :P
Feb 10, 2011 19:41
If I could leave the programming world forever and flip burgers, I probably would...but I've yet to see a McDonalds that thinks my burger skills are worth 100k+
Feb 10, 2011 19:31
i think this conversation maps well to a brand war (Nikon/Canon) :)
Feb 10, 2011 19:30
if idiots mostly work with Microsoft products, maybe that says something ;)
Feb 10, 2011 01:25
@jrista i would hate to live inside your mind

Feb 5, 2011 21:44
ya, photography is a fast moving subject right now it seems...the tech is really moving at a breakneck pace
Feb 5, 2011 04:08
I'm going to take advantage of the new moon to go out and play with steel wool, batteries, and my camera... We'll see if anything interesting comes out of it. :-)
Feb 2, 2011 05:33
Just had a bunch of my favourite photos printed in 5x7. It's so easy to just forget about prints in this digital age. So pleased with the results and also the fact that my eye-calibrated monitors (MBP 13" and Dell U2410) came out spot on.
Feb 1, 2011 04:27
LOL, I find it ironic that there is more stars for the getting a 1Ds or D3x will make you a totally l33t photographer than the other comment. Sigh.

@Pearsonartphoto Again, technologically speaking, no particular brand is better or worse. Technology is ephemeral...transient, and it is the worst reason to base a buying decision on. Camera bodies come and go, and they can easily be upgraded when your brand leapfrogs the competition.

How I see it is that if you are either a newbie to DSLRs, or a high-end pro, Nikon's okay, but they don't seem to do as well for the person in the middle.
Jan 23, 2011 19:52
True. The big plus is that it gets me up and out, I've been doing a lot more hiking and camping since getting back into it.
Jan 23, 2011 18:38
@jrista i'm glad kacalapy picked your macro answer - it was the more complete answer
Jan 23, 2011 04:16
Woot! Got my 50mm f/1.4 :D

@JayLancePhotography I would say the American "industry", in general, has done an exceptional job telling, and convincing, everyone that they need everything. It is actually rather despicable.
Jan 22, 2011 18:06
The American wedding industry as a whole has done an exceptional job over the years of pushing the idea/myth of the 'It's the most important day of your life. Don't you deserve the fairytale wedding that you've been dreaming about ever since you were a little girl?' You wouldn't believe how many women buy into that marketing message and saddle themselves with debt that takes years to dig out from under...

@JayLancePhotography I think your about lighting and business especially push this site to quality level where I always hoped it to be.
Jan 22, 2011 07:04
We're not in the business of taking pictures (good, or otherwise), we're in the business of selling and marketing photography products and services, and if a photographer is unwilling to embrace that truth, then they will have an extremely hard time being successful...
Jan 22, 2011 01:40
I should add, I can't wait for the Smugmug SE site to go into beta;-)
Jan 21, 2011 06:58
wow, in 2015, there will be a total lunar eclipse at the same time the full moon is at its perigee
Jan 13, 2011 00:57
Jan 12, 2011 22:45
I would recommend you focus less on how much blur
Jan 10, 2011 19:28
Jan 10, 2011 17:52
i think alot of the ISO discussion Matt was having really boiled down to "use the appropriate ISO" - ie, don't use a lower ISO if it underexposes the image just have have "better" quality if you're going to have to fix it in post.

strobist.blogspot.com/2007/06/l102-light-controls-overview.html "Water, glass, mirrors, the extreme gravity around a black hole - whatever it takes." Something tells me that if anyone ever gets the chance to light a black hole with speedlights, it'll be David Hobby
Jan 10, 2011 04:40
that said, I'd like to get a 2.8 zoom, because f/5.6 at the tele end suuuuuucks...
Jan 7, 2011 21:41
@garikapati certainly. Its just a drive. The ReadyNAS device itself runs Linux, and has this special X-Raid software on it. To any computer, it just appears like a network drive. Nothing special.
Jan 7, 2011 21:40
small files greatly reduce throughput, but thats simply due to the additional overhead of managing far more files
Jan 7, 2011 21:39
I spent $700 just on the empty enclosure, then bought three Hitachi 2Tb 7200RPM drives to put in it
Jan 7, 2011 21:39
so it was about $1000 total
Jan 7, 2011 21:39
I get an average of 80mb/s reads
Jan 7, 2011 21:39
about 60-65mb/s writes, for big files
Jan 7, 2011 21:38
I intend to back up every scrap of data on it to BluRay, then add another 2Tb
Jan 7, 2011 21:38
Just in case the X-Raid expansion algorithm screws up
Jan 7, 2011 21:38
The ReadyNAS NVX is GREAT
Jan 7, 2011 20:39
collect all the desiccant "DO NOT EAT" packets you can find, bake them for 15 minutes at 150 degrees, and throw them in the bag
Jan 7, 2011 19:43
cables are cheap
Jan 7, 2011 19:36
the freezer trick works in a surprising number of cases
Jan 7, 2011 18:40
A large chunk of it was backed up, however my scheduled backup job has apparently been failing for about 4 months (kindly enough, windows doesn't actually tell you that a backup has failed...it just puts a little red x on an icon on your system tray, which disappears after a while).
