Not a bar, but plays one on TV

I'm not a place to unwind after work, but I play one on TV.

Possibly related is this very useful Twitter thread about the difference between "neutral to good" vs "neutral to bad" relationships.

Q: To reach out: on Monica, the Lavender community, and the future of the Stack Exchange network

heatherOver the past weeks, the uproar has been vast, spanning the new Code of Conduct, Stack Exchange's conduct over the years, and more. Gallons of internet ink have been spilled by everyone involved, including myself. If you don't know me, I'm heather. I am a moderator on Quantum Computing Stack Exc...

Use the stickers that make the most sense to you, be willing to change the stickers if enough changes that those stickers get itchy and weird and not comfy.

@vicky_molokh What would those actions be at this point? Because I can tell you now, reinstating Monica wouldn't cease the ongoing harm. Her dismissal might have triggered this whole mess, but reinstating her just rectifies her specific grievance with the company.

NB/trans people have to live their lives fighting society to get recognition. It is highly likely that they are put into situations like this all the time.

If someone expressly tells you you are making them uncomfortable, the correct response is "I'm sorry" and then not doing the thing that hurts them, as much as possible.

Q: An apology to our community, and next steps

David FullertonI’m David Fullerton, Stack Overflow’s CTO, responsible for the product, engineering, and community teams. I joined Stack Overflow in 2010 because I believed in the vision and mission of Stack Overflow. I wanted to be a part of building a community where programmers come together to help one anot...

The discussion is just very messy and heated right now, and we've only just begun to sort out various factors contributing to it. What I care about right now, a lot more than the RAW tag, is communication. That's the big, gnarled root of this problem, and until it's addressed, I don't think we can move forward.

I'm personally somewhat conflicted over it. I mean, I do lend high value to statistics, but I think we shouldn't forget the fact that Silicon Valley testers tend to have problems with their sampling. Y'know, like forgetting black people exist when training models to recognize a person.

So, we're talking about roleplaying in Not A Bar and about cleaning products in RPG Chat?

Apr 24, 2019 02:50
@V2Blast I concur, and I'm just going to proactively say on behalf of the RPG.SE mod team that we have absolutely zero tolerance for any anti-woman or other political shenanigans on this site. Don't spread it here because we'll be even faster than core SE to act vigorously upon it. Even here in Not A Bar, it doesn't belong here.

Should we leave NAB as NAB, and make a new TRPG Overflow room that is the new "opt-in space we move to when it needs to be separate from (either) main chat"?

@NautArch YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL STABLES.

"You are specifically causing upset for someone that has asked you to stop" is a present good imperative to stop that conversation.

If meta is like the chambers of parliament, chat is like the pub its members pop off to after work.

For some reason the community really wants to tag RAW, but I can't for the life of me see why.
3
Mar 21, 2019 14:13
There's an argument to be made that [raw] connects experts to questions, because facility with the [raw] lens is a skill.
3
Mar 21, 2019 14:08
I'd like to see [raw] blacklisted so we can learn from what people put in its place. We'd probably wind up bringing it back but we might be able to do it better after observing what happens in its absence.

It would be exceedingly unlikely to find a deep sea microbe that's a pathogen to humans. Microbes are specialists for the environments they live in, and humans are pretty dissimilar and hostile in an entirely different way than the ocean floor.

This might be relevant to someone's interests here: The New Order: Last Days of Europe, a wildly-expected alt-history cold war mod for Hearts of Iron IV, is releasing on 21 July. Or so they say.

My position is this: tags describe things the question has said. They're not a stand-in for the question not having said something. The proposal is that we ask for clarification when the question hasn't said something so that it's self-evident the tag should be there. All of that seems perfect. Is there more to it?

The practical, actionable advice I'm giving the moderation team is to think more about the way they interact with the community and the effect that their words can have (and have had), even when unintended, keeping this in mind. I also advise you to acknowledge that things have been mishandled, not simply to say "we're not perfect" but to say, and mean, that you're going to work to keep it from happening again.
