How do I center a pspicture within a proof environment?
\begin{center}...\{end{center} didnt work?!

@CBenni MWE please.

@MarcoDaniel Try first putting the pspicture in a \fbox so that you can see what size TeX actually thinks it is.

@egreg I know this ;-)+

@PauloCereda Oh cool! I like that! :-)

Q: Compiling a given latex file

Matt N.I'm trying to compile BPI.tex here because, as you can see, the given compiled file has the lower end of each page cut off. The problem is: I get lots of "undefined control sequence" errors but if I cut the paragraph containing the error, delete aux and log files, quit TexShop and then recompile,...

10:40 AM
@StephanLehmke I decided that polite requests weren't working, since this person has a pattern and has been told repeatedly how to ask questions. If he does clarify the question, it can easily be reopened.

10:51 AM
@AlanMunn "You are the best", there was a comment. :)

@PauloCereda Well I haven't given up on him yet.

@egreg Not everyone here is really really old

sorry but what is amstex ?

@DominicMichaelis macro package from the AMS not used much now, but was the inspiration behind amsmath package

@DominicMichaelis It was a separate format not built on latex (actually it might predate latex, I'd have to check)

@AlanMunn: Can you provide an answer please: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/109801/author-with-arabic-name

@MarcoDaniel I can, but the question is a real XY problem case: the person erroneously has the Arabic transliteration in his .bib file and it simply shouldn't be there. I can say that, I guess, to get it off the unanswered list.

@AlanMunn Yes. At the moment I am running through the list tagged by bibtex ;-)

@MarcoDaniel I see there are two votes to reopen this one.

@NicolaTalbot Indeed. I don't know why.

11:53 AM
@MarcoDaniel Ok. I've added an answer.

@AlanMunn voted ;-)

Mateuz has now at least edited his previous question, so we should vote to reopen it, and I'll turn my comment on the closed duplicate into an answer. It's still code fragment, but now it's clear what he wants and what the problem is.

Q: Why arrow keys are not recommended in Vim

Yoland Yan "Never use arrow keys in Vim!" I heard this from a random speaker, but didn't have the chance to ask him why. Also, if you don't use the arrow keys, how can you move the cursor in the Insert mode? Thank you!

@PauloCereda No, thanks. :P
In a text editor the normal mode is entering text. If a program doesn't do this, it's not a text editor. :)

@egreg Tell that to vim guys. :)
Actually, gamers would prefer awsd keys instead. :P

@PauloCereda Why should the arrow keys be different from ijkl? Why should ijkl be easier than the arrow keys?

@PauloCereda Oh dear, I have a bad habit! "If you're in normal mode, there's no point in using the arrow keys instead of hjkl since they're further away." Hmm, I've always found the arrow keys closer to my right hand than hjkl.

@egreg Personally, I like both ways. :) I usually go for a more "compact" keyboard mapping when it's more "comfortable" in a particular situation, e.g, when I'm with my laptop. When in desktops (and with good keyboards), I like to use arrow keys. :) But surprisingly, I prefer shortcuts instead. :)
@NicolaTalbot I think we all have bad habits. :)

1:16 PM
@PauloCereda :-) I regularly use w or e or b but I can't see the fuss about what you use to just move 1 character.

@PauloCereda using vim is a bad habit

@NicolaTalbot Me too. :) It's too much of a debate for just one key mapping. :)

You know at the top of the TeX.SX site there are links to meta, chat etc. Why isn't there a link to the blog as well? I know there's one at the bottom of the page, but it's not going to attract much attention down there. (Just a moment of idle curiosity while I procrastinate.)

@NicolaTalbot It's used to appear there when we had new blog posts, but now it only appears occasionally in the community bulletin.
@AlanMunn: I found a game for Xbox360 called Alan Wake. :)

@PauloCereda I was just wondering because it's not as though the word "blog" takes up much space, and its absence suggests it's not considered an important aspect of the site.

@NicolaTalbot Indeed.

@MarcoDaniel TL?

2:02 PM
@Rico Yes. Someone voted for TL.

@Rico There's a vote to close it as too localized.

@PauloCereda this was what I was asking :) thx

@Rico Hi! I remember your question regarding the article.
@Rico It would be ok also in German, just translating it to English would be good so many more would be able to read it
@Rico the world would better find it via google ;-)

@StefanKottwitz heh :D
@StefanKottwitz I thought about it being this way why not it just popped in my head but since there is now another project it may take some time before I publish something

@Rico Great! I would help in proofreading and html editing for the site

3:13 PM
@PauloCereda lol great name!

@egreg why can't your write it down in a first order formula?

@DominicMichaelis We don't have terms for all real numbers.

Oh right I thought using a bijection from $\mathbb{R}$ to $2^\mathbb{N}$ and from there to $\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N})$ but the one i had in mind is not a bijection

3:29 PM
@DominicMichaelis The proof that P(N) is equipotent to R relies on CSB. And the proof of CSB is merely existential, although it doesn't use choice. Can you think of writing down the explicit bijection given an injection R->P(N) and an injection P(N)->R?

you got a point there ;)

@MarcoDaniel ooh

@MarcoDaniel @PauloCereda hi guys :) Thanks for bundling indent.yaml with arara 4.0 :)

@MarcoDaniel is there anything I have to do to make it part of TeXlive, or will that just happen by default?

Q: Specific Font in Beamer

Mário PereiraI would like to make a presentation using a font style like this one: http://gallium.inria.fr/~fpottier/slides/fpottier-2008-06-pittsburgh.pdf Screenshot: Does anyone know which font is this?

3:47 PM
@cmhughes: There's no need for an .exe version for TL in Windows, Karl will make the script wrapper runscript.exerun latexindent.pl automatically. :)

So PrzemysławScherwentke has a point here: if you look at this document with Acrobat you get names like "MSAM10" and "ifb" etc. So the linked question doesn't really give enough info on what to do with the output of the Reader results.

@AlanMunn MikTeX is the issue ;-)

@MarcoDaniel How so?

@PauloCereda sweet, that's great! I wasn't really sure who was responsible for what..... It seems like it would be useful for ctan though....???

@cmhughes I don't see any harm, but don't worry. Rainer, Robin and Karl are very friendly, if there's something wrong, they will tell you. :)

3:53 PM
@PauloCereda yes indeed, I've had communication with both of them- the first time I uploaded it I followed some instructions on this site, and they (very kindly) told me that I shouldn't have... got it all fixed now :)

@AlanMunn Can MikTeX handel such perl scripts? Very often I read questions about MikTeX and makeglossaries. So it seems to me that MikTeX doesn't support perl scripts out of the box.

@MarcoDaniel I think we're talking about different things here. And I know nothing about MikTeX, since I use a Mac. Perhaps you meant to reply to @PauloCereda?

@AlanMunn Indeed. Sorry.

The prize for the worst name choice in LaTeX surely must go to the figure and table environments. I wonder how many questions here and on the web deal with people not understanding the difference between the container and its contents?
6

@AlanMunn absolutely. I remember my first (and second and third) steps with LaTeX and this confused me a lot

@dıʞsdoʇ Obviously too late now, but something like \begin[<type>]{float} would be much more clear.

6:16 PM
@AlanMunn maybe something to keep in mind for the l3 team (@JosephWright)

6:26 PM
@JosephWright Interesting. Can I suggest something?

@AlanMunn Would perhaps be clearer, and also allow other types.
@MarcoDaniel Of course

@JosephWright You are providing an example use the argument type s and the related test \IfNoBoolean(TF). I think one big advantage of the argument type o is the test \IfNoValue(TF). So I can avoid bad tests like \ifx\relax#1\relax etc. The the possibility with \NoValue is more userfriendly.

@MartinScharrer GREAT!!!

@MarcoDaniel There's an example of that too
Page 17
@MartinScharrer :-)

6:38 PM
@MartinScharrer lol

@JosephWright Sorry. My mouse wheel was too fast. :-)

6:55 PM
@MartinScharrer LOL!
Should have used kantlipsum.
5

7:23 PM
@AlanMunn I should provide a German version.

8:18 PM
@egreg And include all the flags of the languages you provide, just like minitoc.

@AlanMunn Hmm, what flag for Swahili? And Union Jack, Stars and Stripes or what else for English?

@egreg Yes, it's true, languages don't really have flags, do they.
I was thinking it would be fun to have different guises of the package: \usepackage[Chomsky]{kantlipsum} would get you pseudo-Chomsky text etc.
And I'm sure @PauloCereda could supply the Futurama option.

@AlanMunn Write a Chomsky Generator and I'll do it.

So I just have to construct the appropriate .xml file?

8:35 PM
hi, how long does one's message show up at tex-live@tug.org after emailing? I joined the mailing list and send email last night. I still never got email from this mailing list or saw my email at show up at tug.org/pipermail/tex-live ?

@Nasser I'm not sure, but the list subscriptions are probably moderated, and I think so are posts from non-subscribers, so depending on the moderators' activities it might be a day or so. Your message certainly hasn't shown up, but I would imagine it will soon enough. And if your subscription isn't yet approved, then your message will appear as if from a non-subscriber, and therefore also held for moderation.

I did subscribe! and verified the subscription also. Here is screen shot of the email
It said WELCOME and so I assumed I am on the list. But my email I send never showed up.
There is nothing easy any more. Things to be simple in the good old days. Now doing the most simple thing seems to be too complicated :)

Independent of that, I'm not sure that the TeXLive list is the right place to ask for this. That list is for the packaging and building of the TeXLive distribution, whereas the feature request you are asking for would be associated to the particular TeX engine (pdfTeX, LuaTeX, XeTeX). For pfdTeX you should send mail to pdftex@tug.org; The luaTeX developers' list is ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/dev-luatex ; the XeTeX list is tug.org/mailman/listinfo/xetex

@Nasser You have to wait a bit for a message to show up. Especially for the first one after registration. I wouldn't worry at least of a day.
@AlanMunn The -file-line-error option is managed by TeX Live, I believe. It's a common interface for the executables.
@AlanMunn In any case, people there can redirect @Nasser to other places.

8:51 PM
@egreg Oh, ok. Too late to delete.
@Nasser Please ignore my comment about other lists then.

@egreg Since it's LaTeX source I would say yes. I don't know enough about pandoc to know whether the input source matters in terms of what you can do. Of course, other pandoc questions might not be appropriate. Unless there is another site with more pandoc questions that might be better

my pdf files generated has low quality fonts (not sharp). I make sure I add \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} as first thing in peramble. Then use pdflatex. Is there some other magic trick to use to make sure pdf fonts are the best quaility? I am running this on Linux using texlive 2012 live. I did search on this and that is what was recommended to do.
The above is at 150% magnification. At 100% magnification it is worst. fonts are not sharp as they should be.

@Nasser Install the CM-Super bundle, or \usepackage{lmodern}.

@egrep thanks. I did see someone say that too, but another said to use \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}. Will try your solution now !

@Nasser I didn't say to remove \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

opps, OK, will add it then (I am newibie in latex, I need things spelled out for me :)
@egreg Yes, it worked! The pdf file looks much better now. I wonder why the CM-super bundle thing is not installed by default ? But good to know. So now I have this

\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{lmodern}

as first thing

@Nasser This is good. The CM-Super bundle is different from lmodern. If you ever need Greek or Cyrillic characters in pdflatex, you'll need it.

11:49 PM
Ok, thanks very much. I struggled with this poor pdf quality for long time. I just thought this is how it is supposed to be. I am surprised that this is not something that should be in the first list of each example latex for tutorial on latex. It seems very important.

@egreg In math articles, if someone puts an equation in a footnote, does that equation get numbered? If so, is it numbered in sequence with the rest of the equations?
(Or theorem or lemma or whatever...)

@AlanMunn In math papers footnotes are quite rare. Some devious author uses numbered equations also there, but it's really infrequent.
@AlanMunn I stand with my comment to the "figure in footnote" question: if something is important it goes in the main body, otherwise it goes nowhere.

@egreg I see. I made a comment about it being odd to number figures in footnotes, and I was wondering if the practice in linguistics is also done in math. In linguistics if you put an example in a footnote, the example is numbered with lowercase roman and the numbering is local to the footnote.
I agree with you too, but if you were to put a figure into a footnote, surely it wouldn't be numbered with the other figures in the main text.

@AlanMunn It's on the verge of nonsense putting a theorem in a footnote and then referring to it. A figure in a footnote definitely doesn't need a caption.

@egreg Yes, I agree.
