3:00 PM
Hi! So it looks like I'll be doing this: simplynas.com/…
but I still need an offsite backup.
thinking of cloning to a hot-swappable external HDD bay.

That was a spamblast if that were a question.

Can someone recommend an external bay with easy swappage?

Bob
@Almo o.O

I'm finding things that need screws to open and close

Bob
That's as powerful as a small computer
and several times more expensive :P

3:01 PM
hahah
it's easy to set up. I don't want to be messing with a windows or linux installation to set up the raid 6 stuff

Bob
@Almo You might get away with something eSATA

Shoo Almo!
What are you doing in here?

asking about backup

Bob
or just something like this?
@Almo Just a quick warning.

3:03 PM
oh Docking station

I have this one:
Very nice product.
Up to 15TB.

Bob
RAID 6 is going to give you a volume of size ((n - 2) * drivesize)

right

Bob
so you may not be able to clone the entire volume onto one drive

so let's suppose I do that Raid 6 box

Bob
3:04 PM
the clone destination needs to be equal to or smaller than the source, of course

how would you recommend I do an offsite backup of it?

Bob
(unless you do a bunch of compression)
@Almo Sort out just how much data you have, and just how much you need to back up.
Figure out how often the data changes.
Look into incremental/differential backups, which only back up changed files since the last backup (since last full backup in the case of differential)

this will be Apple TimeMachine backing up onto the RAID
which is incremental

Bob
you may need multiple destination drives anyway, but I'd recommend logically splitting your volume (e.g. multiple partitions, directories, etc.) into something small enough for each subdivision to fit onto a single drive
that way you can more easily back up/clone

@Bob those are okay, I have one of those specific controllers/enclosures

Bob
3:07 PM
a single logical RAID 6 volume can be rather large
@Almo Wait. You're using the RAID array as a backup destination?
o.O

the idea was to have the box on the network
people back up to it using time machine

Bob
Ah.

there is a clone kept offsite

Bob
Keep in mind that RAID 6 'wastes' two disks for redundancy

yes
data integrity is priority number 1

Bob
3:09 PM
also keep in mind that the RAID volume is possibly going to be larger than any single physical drive

I still have to verify the amount of data to store
but my impression from the current system is that it's less than 3 TB

Bob
so, yea. see if you can logically divide the volume/data onto multiple physical drives, then you can set up a script to do the cloning/offsite copying

So I imagined using 1TB drives in the raid for 2 TB storage, and offsite to a 2-3 TB
or something

Bob
@Almo yea, that would work

but I'll know more for sure later
before actually buying any hardware

Bob
3:10 PM
in that case, you could just directly clone the volume

that was the hope: keep it simple

Bob
or, at least you could if the RAID array was on a standard computer
I'm not too sure about doing so from a NAS
since most NASes don't allow raw disk access

ok I'll keep that in mind

Bob
you may just have to do a file-level copy
rather than block-level

surprising how complex this backup stuff is. but I want to do it right :)

Bob
3:11 PM
still, as long as your offsite drive is smaller than the RAID volume, you shouldn't run into any space issues

ok
I'll investigate getting a computer for it next to compare cost/convenience.

Bob
since it's from a NAS, unless the NAS itself offers cloning, you may be forced to just perform a file-level backup over the network

ok

Bob
that could be a little slower, and has a couple other advantages and disadvantages
but the data should be backed up all the same

right
Thanks for talking to me about it; will probably be back again

3:21 PM
He will
He's persistent like that.
Did you look at the NAS I linked @Almo. It's very nice.
Has a bunch of fancy raid stuff, a torrent client and various other things.

A torrent client? With a NAS? They're not trying to encourage piracy or anything, it's just a feature

You know several places have torrent mirrors for files right? :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager I did look, but I'm looking for something that supports RAID 6 for better data integrity.

I got this program and used it to help configure my home wifi network. It's really handy: metageek.net/products/inssider

@Almo It doesn't?
Hmmm.
Raid5+1

3:27 PM
Isn't RAID5+1 just a synonym for RAID6? :P or effectively the same?

I think it's effectively close to the same.

wait, no

no

that would be two mirrored sets of the entire parity set

Raid 6 has dual redundancy

3:28 PM
RAID5+1 is raid 5 with an automatic backup.

raid 6 maintains its data-integrity with two failed drives

Is that likely to happen?

rebuilding raid 5 from a single failed drive stresses the array, and may cause another fault

RAID5+1 is ((D1, D2, D3) x P1) & ((D1M, D2M, D3M) x P1M) where M = mirror, D = data disk, P = parity disk

I guess I'm not worrying too much. I've never had a single harddisk fail unless I did something stupid myself.

3:29 PM
RAID6 is (D1, D2, D3) x (P1, P2) or 5 disks for 3 data disks

This is for the company I work for
this isn't just some downloaded movies :)

so you need 8 disks for 3 data disks for RAID5+1 and only 5 disks for 3 data disks for RAID6
@Almo I wouldn't even do on-site stuff if you are really paranoid about losing the backups. Amazon S3 or Glacier. The redundancy with both is ridiculous.

we're going to do an offsite
clone the data and take it offstie
but
is amazon s3 cost-effective?

I believe S3 (in non-reduced-redundancy configuration) is designed to survive a cataclysm

I looked at Mozy for us, and it's pretty expensive

3:31 PM
@allquixotic No.
5 disks = 3 disks space.
Man, "disks" is starting to no longer look like a word. :P

Bob
@BenRichards Definitely.

@Almo if S3 is too expensive for you, Glacier is much cheaper, at least the same level of redundancy/resiliency, and its only drawback is that it's not designed for frequent reads
Glacier is essentially iron mountain for digital data

woa glacier looks like what we want

a penny per gigabyte

cheap too
holy moley

3:33 PM
if you are going to be doing regular reads from Glacier, don't use it; too expensive. if it's going to be a contingency for "crap, we lost the primary disks and the first level backups", use it.

yeah
that's what we're looking for
archiving
make sure we don't lose stuff

Bob
@allquixotic The bigger problem (and the reason I personally cannot use them) may be upload bandwidth.

and it's probably only going to run you $100/month for an enormous data set, which I'm sure is within your budget considering you're a company ;)

yeah
and our data isn't enormous
I doubt it's more than 5-10 TB
probably less

Bob
@Almo How often do you want to clone offsite?

3:34 PM
10 TB = 10000 GB = 10000 cents per month = $100 USD per month.
$100 USD per month for peace of mind vs. paying out untold costs in personnel and local storage and replacing bad disks and...

Bob
If you wanted to upload 5 TB every week, you'd need an average upstream of ~66Mbit/sec

Glacier is apparently really popular nowadays. and for good reason. your data is stored on multiple continents

Bob
that's quite a lot of bandwidth

the good news is that putting data into Glacier is free, minus a really tiny cost for the API calls

we have 21 employees, and this solution is only for the macs

3:36 PM
free from Amazon's side (you still have to pay for your internet upstream)

hmm

Bob
It'll take a good 12 hours to upload 5 TB if you were saturating a gigabit link
which you probably won't want to do if anyone is actually using it

I could do the raid 6 box, and do the upload over the weekend

@Almo that'd work, as long as you have at least 100 Mbps (preferably gigabit) upstream

Bob
Almost 5 days if you were on 100Mbit

3:37 PM
right
haha

Bob
@allquixotic Not on 100Mbps. That would take 5 days for 5 TB...

is it easy to use the amazon glacier thing?
like do I need to code anything?

Bob
@Almo There's programs that let you 'just upload'

my main function is that of a developer

@Bob Have you used it before? I don't know if it's well-known or just some random tool I found online. But it works nicely. :)

3:38 PM
this is a side project since I'm not happy we don't have offsite backups

you wouldn't need to code anything if you buy or use an existing product

Bob
assuming you have the bandwidth (I'd recommend nothing less than gigabit), it's great

ok
will check what our bandwidth will be in the new building

Bob
both places I've worked for have nowhere near enough bandwidth to complete such an upload under a month :P

There might even be products that do incremental backups to Glacier
if only some of your data changes over time, that's way more efficient

Bob
3:39 PM
@BenRichards It's pretty well-known.

right

@Bob Aha, cool. :)

Bob
Great for minimising interference.

@Bob Definitely. :)

4:06 PM
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
@BenRichards I just ordered my Surface Pro O_____O
/me squeals like a little kid
my first machine that's not an Android tablet and smaller than a laptop

4:20 PM
@allquixotic Woo! When you getting it? I've played with them at stores. They're smexy. :)

@BenRichards I ordered it off Amazon so it'll take a while to ship, I didn't pay any extra for shipping
I definitely expect to get it this month, and sometimes Amazon surprises you with their shipping speed if there isn't very high capacity in the network

I love ordering things online, possibly more than going to a brick & mortar store, because you get the joy of anticipation, and when it arrives, it's like Christmas. :)
@allquixotic Aha. Yeah, they can. Hope it comes soon!

@BenRichards yeah, right now I'm going to be going to sleep with the same excited vigor as when I was 12 and hoping for Mortal Kombat III under the christmas tree

once I get my Pro, I'm going to do something I'll probably regret later (though maybe not?) and give up my brand new ThinkPad T530 to my mom; it'll be on the kitchen table, so if I really need to take it somewhere to get some extra oomph on the go, I can just pop her ThinkPad X61 back on the counter

4:26 PM
@allquixotic Actually, I fully expected to revert back to my Thinkpad now and then when I got my VAIO, but I really haven't except for a few instances (mainly to do taxes, because my previous taxes were done on there and the software was there already.)
Get the type cover. It's actually a very nice feeling keyboard cover.
It feels surprisingly solid and like any other laptop keyboard.
If I got a surface, I'd get that rather than the touch keyboard.

@BenRichards I've never felt one in person, but to split up my expenses I'm going to buy the Type Cover with my bank account and bought the 'Pro itself with my Amazon Store Card
I'll probably pick it up at Best Buy since I think they sell surfaces retail

@allquixotic Aha, cool. :) And yes they do, I've played with them there as well as at a Microsoft store.

Q: What is the PHP/Python alternative for the year 2014 and 2015 so i can get started in advance given that i only have 5 more years to live?

SUMER_PYTHONWill there ever be a scripting language for the web that is as fast as Python but as easy as PHP but as cool as MYSQL but as tiny as few text files? i know javascript but javascript is for client side. i need server side like php.

@BenRichards the only Microsoft Store within a reasonable distance shut down shortly after the launch of Windows 8 and the original Surface; it was a "seasonal" store in a mall
I've been to a permanent, extremely large Microsoft Store in a very upscale mall in downtown Boston (during a vacation) and it was extravagant, clean, bright and ritzy, just as you'd expect from, e.g. Apple
but the seasonal stores are little more than kiosks

@allquixotic Aw. The closest one near me is at the Prudential Center near Copely Square in Boston. When I went to PAX East, our hotel was across the street so I checked it out while we were waiting to be seated at Cheesecake Factory. :)

4:32 PM
@BenRichards !!!!!!!!! that's the same one I went to!

Aha, it's probably the same one then :)
Hehe

yeah man, I walked down the street that got bombed

That was a fancy mall :)

spent a weekend and an extra day in the Back Bay area

Yeah, that was near there, right? Yeah

4:33 PM
took all the tours and everything
went to an O's vs Sox game; O's won (yay!)

Cool. The tours are definitely fun. Where do you live?
:O

@BenRichards Maryland. Went up by train.

Aha
Well, I'm used to the Sox losing anyway. Oh well. :P

lol you're a sox fan?

Only by virtue of heritage. :P But I do live in MA, about 1ish hrs from Boston.

4:34 PM
they're doing good this year -_- I'm thinking the O's might end up being the WC again. Yankees won't keep up the wins. O's will have a strong May/June/July to all but secure a first or second place finish. dunno about the Sox but if they keep doing what they're doing, they'll be right in contention

nods
@allquixotic Here's your ritzy mall:

@BenRichards yeah... walked all through it, and paid to go up the tall tower

i felt like my head was in a fish bowl... my ears are extremely sensitive to pressure changes

Aha.

4:36 PM
going up that elevator (and down) was one of the scariest things I've done, and not because of the height but because of the pressure changes

Yeah, right across the street is the Collonade Boston. Stayed there for PAX East.
Aha.
Boston is a fun city. It has character, and lots of history. And it's fun and easy to walk about in. :)

I'm not afraid of heights; if I had my head in an isobaric chamber of some kind that isolated me from the changes in pressure in the environment, I would be perfectly content in going to the top floor of the tallest building in the world and hanging on a harness over the edge
and I would be perfectly content with flying, for that matter, given said isobaric device

Me too, though I still don't think I'd be willing to swim in this pool:

I'm not even really afraid of pressure changes; it just hurts like hell, and lingers for a long time after the change stops, and makes me almost deaf, and slightly dizzy

I actually am sensitive to vertigo, and I can feel it at most tall buildings or even by standing near an elevator shaft. Though I don't really get dizzy from it.

4:40 PM
I had nothing but ear problems all while growing up. infections, perforations, tubes, the whole nine yards
my inner ear is pretty scarred and such from all that, and although my hearing is within normal range (at the low end of the "Normal" spectrum), it's made me very sensitive to pressure

Eww. Well, I had many ear infections too. But the upside was that tasty, tasty amoxicillin. It tasted like liquid bubble gum. :9
Aha

hehe. Pediazole - arithromycin - is what I got for my ear infections
it was delicious :P

Oh? :P How'd it taste?

it was this white liquid that always was filled with bubbles because you had to shake it before administering. and it tasted something like sweet milk with a subtle hint of a gentle mint (spearmint?)

Haha, I love the article heading. It really is that good.
Aha
I called it "bubble gum medicine" when I was little. It was kind of a yearly routine for a while (we lived in an old moldy house which apparently contributed to a lot of sickness as kids)

4:46 PM
@BenRichards what contributed to my ear infections was that I had (and still have, to a lesser extent) very poor drainage of fluid from my ears into my sinuses
just the shape of all the various cavities inside my head... and I had my adenoids surgically removed twice (they grew back)

@allquixotic Aha. :/

after the second removal my rate of ear infection has gone down by about 500%; I last got an ear infection in 2009, and before that, 2007
when I was much younger it was about 3 a year

I actually got an MRI once because of acid reflux and stuff. They discovered that I had a deviated septum. But that's about it for my sinuses.
As a side note, the MRI felt weird.

how is it to have an MRI?

The one I went to had me sit in this chair with my chin resting on this thing holding my head in place, and they had this hoop spinning around my head taking xrays at all different angles. It took several seconds since they had to take photos at all angles. But it just felt weird. Hard to describe. Probably akin to having your head microwaved at very low power, though.
Though I hear most people don't feel a thing. I think I'm just sensitive.
But I did get to go hang out with the tech by his computer and he answered questions and showed me how it all worked and what the pictures looked like, and explained them to me. :)

4:51 PM
heh cool
did you have to ingest barium or do they not do that for your head?

No, it wasn't one of those. No tracers. :)
It was just getting my internal structure of my sinuses. I think the barium is more to track where blood is flowing. And how stuff is getting absorbed.
Basically, it's like getting a bunch of tiny xrays of your head. That's basically what it is.
Oh wait
It might have been a CT scan actually. :)
Yeah, that's what I got. Not an MRI, but a CT scan. :)
X-ray computed tomography, also computed tomography (CT scan) or computed axial tomography (CAT scan), is a medical imaging procedure that utilizes computer-processed X-rays to produce tomographic images or 'slices' of specific areas of the body. These cross-sectional images are used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in various medical disciplines. Digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. Herman, G. T., Fundamentals of computerized...
Also, TIL CT scans use the inverse of the Radon transformation as the basis of its imaging algorithm.
In mathematics, the Radon transform in two dimensions, named after the Austrian mathematician Johann Radon, is the integral transform consisting of the integral of a function over straight lines. The transform was introduced by Johann Radon (1917), who also provided a formula for the inverse transform. Radon further included formulas for the transform in three-dimensions, in which the integral is taken over planes. It was later generalised to higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces, and more broadly in the context of integral geometry. The complex analog of the Radon transform is known as ...
Fascinating!

@OliverSalzburg wow
how's it going today Mr. Salzburg

@allquixotic Not too bad. Almost done with a project. That is always good

@OliverSalzburg :D
last night i was hitting my head against the keyboard for being unable to figure out why this service i wrote crashes when run as a service but runs fine as a CLI app

But I accidentally read a couple of Slashdot comments a moment ago and that made me angry :D

5:33 PM
kernelbase.dll crashed >_<

@allquixotic So did you figure it out?

@OliverSalzburg Nope
wrote it a year ago; it ran fine on the other server; moved it to new server only to realize some hard-coded values needed to be replaced with .ini entries; coded up the INI parsing (no, I didn't write a hand-grown INI parser), coded up an InnoSetup installer, built installer, created a server-specific config file, put it in the install dir, installed with innosetup, started service, crash
put same config file in bin\Debug in the project, run the console based driver program, no crash, works fine
could be a permissions issue >_>
I'll try running the service itself as Administrator when I get back home
you're a genius Oli
thanks ducky

PHDinEVERYTHINGFirst off I'd try setting your internet's settings to default, that normally fixes these kind of problems. Captain Tactful Editor strikes again!
Heya @allquixotic, up to anything interesting?

@Mokubai there's too much intelligence behind the posts (as in, actually semi on-topic) to be a bot, but the answers are so bad...
@Mokubai yeah lots of stuff man
just bought me a Surface Pro; it'll be a week or more before it gets here

Too much?
Meant to get back to you about that project but been swamped lately at work and home...

6:12 PM
@allquixotic: I am here, thank you for your time. what should i do with my nvidia gpu.?

@Mokubai :D yeah, about that, it's moving at a fast pace

@allquixotic Shiney, wouldn't mind one if I had the money

@AbidRahmanK well it's up to you -- there are MANY options
@AbidRahmanK depending on whether your BIOS allows you to determine the primary graphics adapter, you might be able to disable the intel iGPU and just use the nvidia card exclusively (although even with the nvidia binary driver that will use relatively more energy than the iGPU, you'll get excellent graphics performance)
you're probably running in default / "optimus-if-available" mode if you haven't changed anything in the BIOS

@allquixotic: I want better battery performance and low speed in linux. I am not using my gpu in linux

for Optimus systems with a full featured BIOS, there are 3 modes

6:14 PM
@allquixotic : sorry, l mean low temperature, (not low speed)

iGPU only, discrete only, or optimus-if-available
in iGPU mode, BIOS disables the nvidia GPU and it uses no power, and only Intel on-die iGPU is available

I don't think my BIOS has that facility, I didn't see that yet.

in discrete only mode, BIOS disables the intel iGPU and it uses no power, and only nvidia discrete GPU is available

@Sathya Maybe he was singing a song?

in optimus-if-available mode (the default out of the factory), both GPUs are enabled, and the operating system drivers are supposed to handle power management or using both at once if supported
now... you might assume that Linux doesn't support Optimus. you'd be partially right. but there is something that's almost as good

6:15 PM
I may need to use GPU in windows because i play games. But in linux, I use it only for coding, so no need of gpu.
bumblebee?

Bumblebee is a piece of software that will run the Intel iGPU as the primary display graphics adapter (using the Intel open source driver), and will run the Nvidia binary driver for the Nvidia card... it allows you to wrap commands in optirun if you want to invoke the nvidia card, otherwise, programs default to running on the iGPU
Bumblebee additionally will turn completely off your Nvidia GPU if it isn't being used at the moment
even if you never intend to use the nvidia gpu, your best bet might be install bumblebee, if only because it will tell the nvidia GPU to shut itself down if you never use optirun as a loader for a graphically intense program

but i am running nouveau now. last time i tried to install nvidia drivers was a disaster and my linux don
't even boot to GUI.

@AbidRahmanK then you probably did it wrong :P or something in fedora might've interfered... Ubuntu has good luck with Bumblebee, but I don't know about Fedora, YMMV
as long as nouveau is loaded, or no driver at all is loaded for your nvidia card, and you are either in discrete-only or optimus mode (or if you are completely unable to configure this mode in BIOS), your nvidia GPU will eat ridiculous energy constantly
nouveau is essentially the same level of power management as having no driver -- none

any way i need to install nvidia binary driver and disable nouveau, right?

@AbidRahmanK yes, that would be my recommendation; I'm not saying it's impossible, but Fedora tends to work a little less well with the binary driver than say Ubuntu
in terms of getting it configured and booting
but before you do that, keep in mind that you need to run a custom modified nvidia driver to get bumblebee working
so I would actually suggest that you not install the nvidia driver using the vanilla install way
instead, just follow instructions for installing Bumblebee on Fedora 17 or 18

6:20 PM
vanilla install means?
they tell about yum install...

@AbidRahmanK vanilla means going to nvidia.com and downloading the binary and running it

@AbidRahmanK excellent; looks like the instructions are already updated for F18
I haven't personally tried those instructions on my own Optimus laptop so I can't vouch for them, but it looks like this is well supported

but now i need a safeway of installing nvidia drivers and disable nouveau.

6:23 PM
I would start out without Primus, then if everything good, try with Primus
@AbidRahmanK the installation for the bumblebee-nvidia package should take care of all that for you
it's in the wiki page you linked to
just follow the instructions specifically for Fedora 18 and ignore the ones for 17

two methods are there for fedora 18. which one to try?
section 3.2 or 4.2?

to directly answer your question: both.

k . i will try that...

> The previous commands install bumbleblee with the nouveau drivers. If you want to install bumblebee with the NVIDIA proprietary drivers you must also follow these instructions:
emphasis on "also"

heyho, anybody able to help me with windows 8 and microsoft account? I changed the password of the MS account on my notebook and now I cannot use that account in the metro UI on my desktop

6:30 PM
I will try your gist commands

A: GPU usage and heat production in linux

allquixoticThink we have worked it out in chat: convo starts here The basic idea is: Bumblebee. It's well supported on Fedora 18. Fedorawiki has instructions. I created a github gist containing the appropriate commands. The result, if it works, should be: Intel graphics on the processor is the primary...

Much nicer ;D

6:46 PM
I just gotta assume that they stored the old password somewhere on my PC and windows 8 is trying to hammer the microsoft account service with that outdated password or something. f***ing windows 8 :D

I hope I don't have this problem with my Surface Pro....

I finally got the OK from my boss to start migrating Joomla to WP. Now I have only to wait a few hours to donwload WP's 6MB install file. =/

@ruda.almeida o_O it will take you hours to pull 6 MB?
pretty sure I could pull 6 MB in about half an hour even on my old 56K

@allquixotic Yes. It starts at about 15~20 K/s and gets progressively slower, then fails mid-download
Tried thrice now

@ruda.almeida sounds like a defective connection (or router, or..), not one that's just rated at an insanely slow rate

6:54 PM
In holidays I can get 80+ MBPS all nice and shiny

@ruda.almeida what are people at the company doing with your connection?! torrents 24/7?

@allquixotic I know really well where the defects are

you should give him an xz -9 of it

@allquixotic There's this smaller building on another branch of my organization, I visit it sometimes, it has a 2MBPS connection offered by a home ISP shared between about 500 machines. Reports from PFsense / sarg / squid / whatever shows the top 100 sites. The top 10 are FB, FBCDN, facebook, etc etc etc

actually, throw a --best in there

@allquixotic I don't have that much control over the GitHub backend

the difference between xz -9 and xz -9 --best may be a couple of hours
@OliverSalzburg yeah but you could be a nice netizen and host it for him :>

Oh, it's at 75%, maybe it will finish this time
If it is in some official mirror with some magic route it gets 10 or 20 times faster, but I want it in my home language damnit

the Rule of Helpfulness: whenever you are trying to help someone with something they need, and it involves you doing actual work, circumstances will conspire to ensure that your help attempt goes for naught. essentially, by your attempting to help, the problem will resolve itself. therefore you helped, because your attempt is what led to the problem fixing itself. ;p
