I just installed MySQL on Mac OS X and can't set the root password, it looks like it has already been set
$ mysqladmin -uroot password nyw
/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

2:24 AM
@titaniumdecoy : you should ask that on the site proper ;p

2 hours later…
3:57 AM

1 hour later…
5:11 AM

argh, why is Firefox 4 not letting me sign into chat?

heya @Sathya
the 'your login information is too stale' error?

'ello @JourneymanGeek
@JourneymanGeek nopes, goto chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/118/root-access -> "you must be logged in to talk", click on link, "welcome sathya, you're being redirected", back to chat -> logged out again.

Q: Not able to sign into Chat using Firefox 4.0.1

SathyaI'm not able to sign into chat using Firefox 4.0.1. I'm logged in to Super User & Stack Exchange, head over to goto http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/118/root-access, I get the you must be logged in to talk. link instead of chat box. Click on the link, I get logged in and the message...

hello @YOU

5:34 AM
o0
@YOU ?

YOU
Hello

ahh
YOU
i didn't see @YOU here ;p

YOU
:D

i was wondering if it was a keyword of some sort ;p

YOU
Trying to repro Sathya's report, somehow couldn't on mine.

5:37 AM
i have a similar issue on a specific box running chrome
its not here, and i use it rarely so i find it baffling

YOU
me too

you have the same problem on some other system @YOU ?

YOU
@Sathya, I noticed one or two times before, IIRC, but couldn't repro with the steps in your post.

okay,

sigh I have people constantly wandering in ;p

6:44 AM
@Sathya after the "welcome, you're being redirected" -> back to chat, logged out again -- can you check if the cookies are there? There should be (at least) two cookies set by chat.stackexchange.com, namely seusr and csr
don't post the values here

7:11 AM
morning all

@balpha both cookies are present
morning @DMA57361
actually there are multiple seusr & csr cookies @balpha

multiple? that's interesting
and it could explain the issue
try removing the cookies and then doing the login-triad again

yep, that fixed it.

cool. I'll check the code for how that could have happened

that.. might have been my thing? When I installed FF4, I also imported everything from IE, incl cookies.

7:24 AM
they should be overwritten, though -- I think. Best I can do is check the code and see if I can find a possible reason -- if I don't come up with anything there's probably not a lot I can do

ok, thanks @balpha
did the sites just go offline @balpha? // nev m, back up.

sam just deployed

hmm
that almost sounds like its running too slow

11:44 AM
<evil mode>BWUHAHAHAHAHAHA! Batch-fu defeats SSH security prompts, I now have the powaaaa!</evil mode>

looks around innocently
So, how're we all on this fine sunny day?

not bad
almost hit my planned rep for may ;p

Nice, doing well there by the looks of it...

2 hours later…
2:10 PM
$15 gift cert at amazon - what should i get?

3:01 PM
Another $15 gift certificate would be an amusing thing to get...

hah

though, with shipping chances are you'd only get a $10 gift certificate...
Depends what you're after really @AidanRyan... gizmos, books or other stuff...

fun gadget?

laser pointers are fun, especially for cats, they go insane.... amazon.com/s/…
Awesome, ThinkGeek stuff on Amazon: amazon.com/s/…

oh sweet thanks for the link

3:13 PM
No worries

@Mokubai nice :D
all teachers should be issued before being allowed to mark students' work ;)

lol :D

in fact, I think it should be the new lowest grade, just below "fail"

We should get one each for @KronoS and @IvoFlipse so they can check my blog posts...

now now... no need to make crazy suggestions like that :P

3:22 PM
Okay... my blog posts :P

that's OK, I've only written one anyway on a fairly mundane topic, and haven't got any others lined up

2 hours later…
5:43 PM
wow... quiet in here... I'm gone for 2hrs and nothing has happened :P

Wil
6:05 PM

I've never seen anybody get suspended before.

8:46 PM
@edbott upgraded my desk and lap to Kingston drives. See here: http://t.co/bURQFXw #SuperUserBlog

@studiohack - Why are you correcting so many posts from WiFi to WIFI? The correct usage of the trademarked term is Wi-Fi. So, the former of the two previous is actually the more appropriate one. That is, unless you're talking about the radio station.
Wi-Fi () is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance. A Wi-Fi enabled device such as a personal computer, video game console, smartphone, and digital audio player can connect to the Internet when within range of a wireless network connected to the Internet. The coverage of one or more (interconnected) access points — called hotspots when offering public access — generally comprises an area the size of a few rooms but may be expanded to cover many square miles, depending on the number of access points with overlapping coverage. 'Wi-Fi' is not a technical term. However, the Alliance has genera...
@paradroid Suspensions happen in cases of extreme rules violations. I'm guessing there's something in our ToS about minimum age. Benny stated in one post that he was 12. See the edit history here:

@Iszi Thanks

Here we are. ToS says minimum age is 13.

Hello all
I am confused about macbook air

@davsan What are you confused about?
And hi everyone :D!

my brother is in US so I am planning to buy one
it is cheaper in US
it has 128GB SSD harddisk

9:17 PM
The keyboard will have a different layout

doesnt matter
I am using english keyboard anyway
I know the layout of my language
It has decent CPU, battery etc.
and it is 1300$

With a 128GB SSD it will cost a fortune

it sounds like extremely good deal to me

no way. I cannot believe that price

9:20 PM
yeh, I got it

I was kinda against macbook airs
but now
...
what do you think about it

I remember someone here saying that flash storage is somehow different to a true SSD, but I do not remember the details. I also may be imagining it.

I read good reviews

My friend has one. Not really my cup of tea.

I am going to use it for development
not heavy development thou

9:22 PM
And I think the keyboards are awful.

besides it has international warranty
what is wrong with it's keyboard?

I just really do not like the Apple keyboards. I find it very hard to touch type on them and I think they feel crap. But many other people do not seem to mind them. It's personal preference.
Really unergonomic. Just made with looks as the primary consideration.

It is not only about looks, a similar computer costs like 1700 $

Well, if you want one, go for it.

I am trying to find counter arguments to be honest

9:27 PM
@paradroid it's different only in it's application

I did not want it till tonight

should be same performance

@KronoS Thanks. I think it might have been one of your answers that I was thinking of.

As my brother says SSD boosts performance considerably

9:29 PM
So even though CPU is not as powerful as others,, SSD may compensate

actually this is the better read for comparison of HDD vs. Hybrid vs. SSD
@davsan it really does... thought the faster the CPU the faster the SSD
but still no matter what a SSD will improve performance
especially if you run a RAID0 of two SSD's

Hey! @Kronos

Hmm interesting benchmarks, let me read it carefully

No TRIM with RAID though, on Windows. Not sure what the situation is with MacOSX.

oh hey @BloodPhilia how ya been?
@paradroid you sure? It looks like TRIM is supported on my RAID
but I could be wrong

9:33 PM
@KronoS As far as I know, there is no TRIM with RAID, so the life of the SSDs is shortened. I could be wrong, but I do not think so.

@KronoS, I have a RAID0 of two hard drives and the "deletedisablenotify" test whatchamacallit implies it is an SSD with TRIM...

@KronoS Oh, busy, but fine otherwise! Thanks! How about yourself?

But I know that it is not...

@Kronos these have convinced me to buy Macbook air
actually my girlfriend always wanted one
I asked my brother if he could bring one
Now after looking at the specs I want one too :)

@davsan You might want to get the 4GB version, for future-proofing, as they are not upgradable.

9:38 PM
hmmm good point

I bought an apple product yesterday!

iPhone I bet

No
It's an iPod classic
The only iPod with enough storage space
I had an iPod nano 2GB in 2004
Then got an iPhone in 2006

I would have gone for the iPod Touch. They are pretty cool.

kept that until 2009
And now, since 2009 I've got my first iPod!
@paradroid Ye they're ok, but I've got a phone that does the same and more than an iTouch

9:42 PM
I have a 1st generation iPod Nano somewhere.

And I really needed that 160GB or storage
So the iPod classic is awesome :D

That's a lot of music. I wish I could still find music that I liked. I seem to not be able to find any new music which I like, which makes me feel old.

And for a device that has moving components, it does pretty well with the battery!
:D
36 hours playback, non-stop, around 60% volume

However, iTunes sucks.

@paradroid I don't use iTunes

9:46 PM
Do you use MGTEK Doptek, or something? Something with a weird name.

No :p
I use MediaMonkey
Which is pretty awesome!

iTunes and quicktime player are nearly the worst sofware i have seen after real player

Looks quite like a media manager that I used just under a decade ago, called Helium2.

@davsan Which is why I don't use it

I used to be into tagging and organising all my mp3s. Now I hardly ever listen to music. When I do, it's from the notorious Grooveshark website, which has loads of stuff.

9:49 PM
@paradroid MM is pretty awesome and does so much! It converts any audio format to any audio format, has loads of options, syncs with nearly all media devices

@BloodPhilia Is it free?
Oh, I see that there's a Gold version.

@davsan RealPlayer is the absolute worst for me, closely followed by iTunes. I can tolerate QuickTime, I just have to make sure all the files that default to QT to open are instead set to Media Player Classic HC or VLC

@paradroid Yes but I did buy the gold version
But the Free version is brilliant as well!

@BloodPhilia Doing good... super busy with work and school
finals are this week and next

@BloodPhilia I'll check it out some time, Cheers.

9:56 PM
@KronoS Oer! Good luck!
@paradroid You really should! I choose MM because it was the only one that I could have a 40000+ library in without having to wait 10 mins for it to start

@BloodPhilia itunes doesn't take that long for me to start and I have a lot more than that in my lib

@KronoS It did with me! iTunes was sooooo super slow!
But back then, I used iTunes 8 I think?

It's a little faster now... and I kinda also have a RAID0 SSD array so that helps a little
:P

Has anybody got one of the those LaCie USB flash drives that look like a key?
I lost my keys recently, which had a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 4GB, with all my stuff on. They do not make them anymore, so I am looking for something which is as durable.

10:27 PM
@paradroid @Mokubai from what i can gather from online is that Win 7 does support trim and will work if the drive supports it as well.. which the Kingston SSDnow v100's do...
but then again this suggests otherwise:
0
Q: Is TRIM supported on RAID 0 configurations for SSD drives in windows 7?

John SonmezI know this question has probably been asked at some point in the past, but I am trying to figure out if Windows 7 supports passing TRIM commands through RAID controllers yet. I am trying to decide between buying a single SSD drive and utilizing TRIM or Buying two SSD drives and putting them in ...

though it's a little old

10:59 PM
@KronoS So is there TRIM support with RAID or not?

@paradroid depends is all I can say ATM

@KronoS I see

note to self... when jailbreaking... MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP FIRST!!!! #facepalm

Really not sure which one to get: lacie.com/dk/products/range.htm?id=10052
CooKey or iamaKey

good morning
@KronoS : backing up is something you should do anyway ;p

11:05 PM
@JourneymanGeek agreeed... and I actually did on my desktop at home, just not on my lappie while at work

needs to do a DD backup at some point, or some other full disk backup NOT fond of those
since in this case if it fails, a full test restore would be a bad idea

11:51 PM
@Iszi, you're right, I was just thinking about that earlier today, I need to correct that. most users write Wi-Fi as wifi... thanks for the heads up!
