than unity?
;o)

Bob
Unity would actually be closer to the WinVista and newer start menu (search and all), I guess.. but there's no direct equivalent to any built-in Windows components
@EinsteinsGrandson There is no better or worse. Only personal preference.

I just love old style Gnome for Linux
ald old style Start menu for Windows

Bob
Eh. I need my program search :P

you would probably like the Cinnamon desktop for Linux

yeah, that's nice in Windows 7

Bob
2:01 PM
hit Win/meta => type in program name => hit enter

has a start menu, bottom bar, and program search

Bob
in XP I have to go open cmd and start programname :\
and it's not as forgiving as the search

Cinnamon is basically a Windows 7 clone, not gonna lie

Bob
@allquixotic KDE?

@Bob KDE is a Windows 7 clone with about 10,000 widgets and enhancements and doodads

Bob
2:02 PM
lol

i hate KDE

Cinnamon is just the bare concepts of Windows 7's window manager / desktop shell

the ugliest UI ever

Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson you make me sad :(

2:03 PM
though it does depend which version you are talking about
@Sathya out of space?

306GB free on c:

any version between 2005 and 2010

117GB free on e:

0x80042319 = writer not responding

2:03 PM
both, same

just hate KDE.... Gnome was much prettier
ok, gotta go

@Sathya 0x80042319 = DMA transfer failed when trying to flush to physical media

Bob
..you do know KDE looks completely different on different distros/themes?

any metorits hitting us this week?

Bob
I imagine GNOME is the same way

2:04 PM
can't tell whether it's the SATA controller or the disk

oh - nothing in the event viewer

Bob
@allquixotic or just VSS acting up again :P

Bob
bye

it might've hit a bad block @Sathya
happens a lot when doing enormous writes. there are often "undetected" bad blocks
kind of like a very sparse minefield
doo doo do walks along BOOOOM

2:05 PM
@allquixotic on a (new) hard disk as well as on my external drive?

@Sathya it stops at 26% on two different destinations?
only one of the devices is being written to at a time presumably

recimage fails with createimage set to c: as well as e

does it fail at the same percentage?

and @bob - lookwhatyousaid:

Bob
how big is it?

2:06 PM

Bob
@Sathya I was just making a joke :P
VSS has been horribly unreliable for me

crap
:(
@Bob doesn't create the image, at all. @allquixotic yes - same at both

Bob
it actually could be an issue with VSS, I dunno
@Sathya but do you have an estimate?

2:08 PM
@Sathya do a chkdsk on your C: drive

Bob
is this a fresh install? perhaps the size of the Windows folder?

if your C: drive has FS errors it may cause a problem with VSS

@allquixotic good idea - just had an improper shutdown thanks to power failure

you don't have to reboot

Bob
@allquixotic If you look at it funny you might have problems with VSS.

2:09 PM
you just need to check whether the volume has errors or not
you can do that (read-only) without rebooting

@Bob yes fresh new install

if it SAYS it's got an error, then do the thing where it runs chkdsk before booting

Bob
Can't Win8 fix disk errors without rebooting?

@Sathya that's probably it, then -- VSS is finding an FS error when doing the backup

2:10 PM
do the scan

:(
ok

it's not going to do a full surface scan I hope

definitely not

Bob
not unless you /r

let me know if the manual scan finds anything, I'll be back in 45 minutes or so
o/

2:11 PM
no errors found.
still hitting the same.

@Sathya So... do you have mount points on the drive?

@OliverSalzburg the what..?

Bob
could you monitor memory usage during?
probably won't help :P

...to my understanding

Bob
@Sathya do you have Visual Studio installed?
@OliverSalzburg different error code

2:16 PM
@Bob no.. but I do have Hyper-V installed, if it matters

Well... try to procmon it ;D

@Bob amazingly on my laptop, recimg worked despite VS2012 installed
@OliverSalzburg ok - I'll take a quick shower & be back

heh
you sure there's nothing in the event logs?
double check both Application and System logs?
hm
especially near the end
looks like a possible cause is the System Reserved partition being too small? o.O
they're talking about system images and backups in Win7, but it's a similar issue with those two VSS writers timing out

2:42 PM
@Bob app log sys this error, just as recimage fails

Several causes can be attributed to this error condition of “Enumeration of the files failed”. The majority of the times, these causes have a direct correlation to the ImagePath in the registry for a service that is installed. To outline a few we discovered thus far are:

1.  An invalid path.
2. Invalid characters in the path.
3. Syntax formatting of the path.
4. A valid path on SAN drives of a Failover Cluster.
scroll down for troubleshooting tips

@Bob that seems applicable for backups.. having that said - here it's a straightforward path & no nonstandard installs..

Bob
@Sathya it's talking about the path of services

@allquixotic \o

Bob
2:51 PM
and this is using VSS in the same way a system state backup would, I'd expect
it wouldn't hurt to check service paths. that powershell script should be easy/fast enough to run?

Holy cow. This is brilliant: microsoft.com/Language/en-US/…

I was just about to complain that I know none of the proper German terms in Windows terminology

@HackToHell CSB

:P :P

@Bob that threw up few paths, but all third party services
@HackToHell can't simulate that

Bob
@Sathya make sure the paths are valid?
fix them or uninstall the services if they are not, and then try again?
@allquixotic :P
> The kneebone's connected to the... something. The something's connected to the... red thing. The red thing's connected to my wrist watch... Uh oh.

all of these services, incl steam are something which were there on the laptop as well - not really sure that would help

Bob
3:03 PM
well, could you give an example of a path reported as invalid?

anyone have any idea what signal is sent to the bash process when a virtual terminal emulator (say, gnome-terminal) gets the "X" clicked on its window?

@Sathya works only in the Downloaded tab.

Bob
SIGHUP
This signal indicates that someone has killed the controlling terminal. For instance, lets say our program runs in xterm or in gnome-terminal. When someone kills the terminal program, without killing applications running inside of terminal window, operating system sends SIGHUP to the program. Default handler for this signal will terminate your program.

apparently mostly virtualbox in this case

I'm expecting a proper question&answer post on the site once you guys solve this ;P

@Bob no vbox installed..
@OliverSalzburg oh I will post a question :-)

3:25 PM
@Sathya Awesome :)

I was jobless enough that I answered his question :\

A: Make Internet speed faster

Sathya How to make my Internet connection speed faster in download, upload ,browsing. etc? Call up your provider and ask for a better/faster plan. Other than that, it's not possible. if it were.. well, everyone would be doing it. Does changing the MAC address help? No. How to unlock the ...

> No.
lol

Bob
well, I'm going to sleep
good luck @Sathya

@Bob thanks - thanks again for your help!

Bob
if you have some time to spare, it might be worth verifying service paths

3:29 PM
i need to find one of my old answers about codel

Bob
a lot of those errors in the OS script are likely false positives - the executable path should be quoted if it has spaces, but the arguments should not be part of that quoted string
so, most are probably fine
anyways, good luck.

3:44 PM
@allquixotic Push dat CoDel ;)
Do you think QoS would help at all?

@Sathya That's awesome. The page doesn't exist and Chrome offers to search Google for "download faster internet". If I perform that search, I get an ad from my ISP O__O

@Tanner here
> Andrew McGregor reports “phenomenal” results in New Zealand using the fq_codel queue discipline and port based QoS classification rules
it's not an either/or proposition; it's and.
@OliverSalzburg your ISP is probably poisoning your search results :/

@allquixotic Well, it's the Google ad result is what I meant

apparently CoDel is only really effective with ethernet :/
next project: get a USB ethernet adapter that'll work with my Nexus 7
don't care if I have to drag a cable around the house with me
maybe I will just stop using my tablet until 802.11ac tablets

@JourneymanGeek I tried for like an hour, couldn't get it to work! I ended up installing the xubuntu desktop which thankfully did

A: Which binary clang version I should use for CentOS

allquixoticThe binaries for Ubuntu 12.04 x86 may work (may, not will); but if they don't, it's due to linkage to libraries which have changed incompatibly between 2010 and 2012. @OliverSalzburg The older content seems to be (1) heavily copy-pasted, (2) better suited to AU or SF

lol

@RudáAlmeida I'll see what develops. I won't send someone away who wants to post long, detailed guides about stuff ;D

4:10 PM
@OliverSalzburg Well, I google for some excerpts and couldn't find anything. But actually copypasting random unlicensed stuff is forbidden here, except for properly attributed excerpts with links, right?

@RudáAlmeida He did put links in his old post though

@OliverSalzburg What I mean is, I can't copypaste an entire blog post to answer a question, unless said post is CC-BY-NC or something similar, right?

@RudáAlmeida Obviously, there are rules. However, I like to handle those case-by-case
Plagiarism is not welcome and taken seriously. But it's hard to draw a line

@allquixotic I lol'd

@OliverSalzburg I see

4:14 PM
Some people think it's flag-worthy if people forget to put the stuff in a blockquote

Whhhy users whhhhy? They call me because they can't find My Documents in Windows 7. They call because important emails were flagged as spam and they didn't click Allow. ~_~

I can never find My Documents...
Why would a folder that's named "Documents" come up as "My Documents"?! It drives me nuts!
It's a rhetorical question! ;D

Haha
TBH, I put everything on my desktop...
When it gets ugly, I make a folder called "Junk" and drag it all in there.

@Tanner you use your desktop to store data? ugh...
the only thing I ever allow on my desktop is shortcuts

See, I don't really have "data" to store.
Most of what's on my desktop are just screenshots.

4:19 PM
@Tanner what happens when your junk folder gets full? do you make a Junk2? or do you create a subfolder called Junk-junk and throw all the Junk in there?
@Tanner there's a Pictures library/folder for a reason.......... :P
I actually keep all my screenshots in Pictures, all my .docs in Documents, etc. and sometimes I even make subfolders in those folders to organize

But desktop is at the top =D and never moves.

I even made a new library and folder called Apps for portable apps (since I don't have admin rights at work)
in Apps I store anything that can run in place without a windows installer

@allquixotic And yes. I Junk 2.
but typically by the time I need a Junk 2 folder the install is old enough that it's time for a fresh one anyway...

I even have a C:\Users\me\Apps\bin folder in PATH for CLI stuff :D

@allquixotic haha nice

4:21 PM
my PATH environment variable at work is enormously huge

@allquixotic Quit braggin'

At home, I have four icons on my desktop: Apps, Projects, misc and Recycle Bin. Misc is a 10GB+ folder full of... I'm not even sure anymore. But at least my desktop screen is clutter-free. (*)
At work, I have literally zero items on my desktop.

94 entries in my total PATH (user + system)

a lot of it was added by MKS, Visual Studio, Oracle driver, Perl, and a bunch of Java tools I added to my own PATH

4:25 PM
I'm categorizing my misc stuff into proper folders, all the while furiously cursing myself for saving that precious extra seconds by using naming schemes such as "bfdghihbjkfd(3).txt" and "new folder (3) - copy (2)"

@allquixotic Maybe you'll like this, in case you're not already using it :D rapidee.com/en/about

Just felt like the right moment to mention it :P

@OliverSalzburg oh nice
I can't think of how many times I've cursed Microsoft for so many built in GUIs that are not resizable
"let's have a non resizable line edit component and make you have to scroll back and forth with the arrow keys!"
Visual Studio has a bunch too

@allquixotic What confuses me most is how long the dialog has been like that

@OliverSalzburg it's probably got something like a 10,000 line switch statement or several dozen callbacks in C/C++ Win32 API that's so difficult to read / maintain that everyone at MSFT is scared of even trying
and the people who wrote it originally are long gone

Hehehe

4:29 PM
I have a license to a 1997-era MMORPG client side code which was written and optimized for the original Pentium and non hardware accelerated graphics (everything rasterized on the CPU with DirectDraw used to blit and swap buffers, with no texture filtering)

We should coin that as ALG syndrome - Author Long Gone

the routine that processes inbound packets involves a switch statement on the integer that tells what type of packet, and that switch statement is over 30,000 lines long
it's 80% of the code, right there, in one function, in one switch statement
me and a buddy try to maintain it but it's so awful
it has inline assembly
and some of the cases MUST fall through to several one(s) below it or it'll crash
and some print statements have to be left in or it'll crash
and some global variables have to be set and reset at the right times or it'll crash

and there are meaningful comments like //JS Mar 1999 - added new variable v45 for desync issue
feature request -> naively add feature -> cause random crashes -> chase pointers for 4 hours -> provide duct tape fix that adds even more code to the mess
and we still do that. that's how we "maintain" it.

4:35 PM
OH, unrelated: I have a Q about server migration
two dedicated server boxes with "approximately" 3TB of disk space, but the block sizes don't match exactly, just very close
both booted into a rescue environment from PXE (so, not booted from the HDD, so can read/write to it freely)
need to get entire OS image from one box to the other

@OliverSalzburg hehehe

obviously I can't store the image locally without writing it on the receiving end
and I can't do a block for block, I need something that knows what sectors are used by the FS and only transfer those
only using about 50% of the volume on the source side
was thinking dd with an of= of stdout and just set up a process on the receiving end that reads from stdin (off the network) and writes to disk
very vague malformed idea so far
ducky halp, you're supposed to talk back to me

Haha. This duck is lost. I'm bad at teh linuxes. :(
My Windows instinct says to backup and restore to the other machine.
Are you dealing with any RAID?

yup
RAID10 on one side with 4 disks, RAID1 on the other with 2 disks

I was gonna say "Swap the disk ^___^" but no.

4:44 PM
dedicated = in Germany

Oh.

can't do that without paying lots more for the four disks vs two
4 x 1.5TB more expensive than 2 x 3TB
(59 * 0.81) * 1.32 = $63 USD/month (plus extras)

Hmmm...
Ya know what, bug the Comms Room. They'll know.

no, they'll chide me for "no live tech support"

I'll see if I can slip it in during a lull :P I lurk there all day...

4:49 PM
I take it lunchtime isn't a lull
RAID isn't an issue, btw
reading/writing to/from /dev/sda is above the RAID layer
since it's hardware RAID it just looks like a plain disk with blocks

I was only asking about RAID for disk switching. Missed the fact you don't have physical access.
'cuz I'm lazy like that.
Blar now I'm puzzling over that :P

It is kind of logical that 4 x 1.5TB more expensive than 2 x 3TB
4 drives draw more power.
And more spindles can be quite nice performance wise

@Hennes exactly, I wasn't puzzled by that at all
I moved to a new server to cut costs, so if that involves reduced performance, oh well
new server does have more RAM, so more page cache
slightly slower CPU and fewer disks
certain workloads may run faster due to the much greater RAM
but others will run slower

I am still using a Xeon X3363 (core 2 series, quad, 80 Watt TPD) and two 15K RPM SAS drives.
I suspect I gain a lot of speed if I swap those for SSDs
The SAS drives are 146 GB, so 120 GB SSD's would do.

my workload is mostly memory access and CPU intensive, not very much disk usually
running mono process eating up GBs of RAM and 100% CPU on my current box. OpenSimulator
once in a blue moon it reads/writes about 500MB to disk

5:05 PM
Most of the time my desktop and my server are idle. The only times I do use them is when gaming (desktop, mostly GPU limited) or when compiling. And disk access limits the compile jobs. Even with a mirror with 15K RPM SAS drives

240GB of SSD is 19 euro a month, which works out to about 23 USD

23 US$, recalculates. That is 19 Euro per month. ;-)
;-)

(19 * 0.81) * 1.32 = $20.14 or so

420 Gbit Bandwidth. Sneaky, in bits!

it's only a little more expensive because all Hetzner stated prices include 19% VAT, and they subtract that out for me as US customer

oh how i wish Intel would come out with Intel HD4000 accelerated OpenCL 1.1 support on Linux

The goverment does not know the difference between bits and bytes. Not even when they make a new law. Whoops

I could have them install a Core i7 3700 in my dedi server and use the GPU for Bullet physics in mono :D
yes, server-side physics

5:19 PM
Well I just had a hooray moment, just found one of my 500 gig externals I couldn't find
hey guys what is the dd command to display all drives and partitions again @Hennes

dd command? Like fdisk -l ?

Thank you

Lol.
Maak off-site back-ups
Het hebben van back-ups is fijn. Mensen die back-ups maken lopen rechter op en vinden aantrekkelijkere partners. Mensen zonder back-ups hebben een blekere huid en genieten minder van hun eten. Zoveel is bekend.

or in this case, squeek apparently

Bummer.
